Fear as a political and anti-political emotion:

A normative analysis in times of political polarization

Enlace: https://meet.google.com/bsp-rkmm-tsq Abstract: This paper defends that fear is not the ‘negative’ emotion in politics that certain literature portrays based on a too consensual conception of politics (Nussbaum 2018). Rather, I claim that we need to normatively distinguish between fears that are anti-political and those that are properly political. I argue that certain fears are normatively adequate because some views are politically unacceptable. In those situations fear can signal political threats and potentially help to mobilize citizens’ action. Moreover, I specifically claim that in the current open confrontation between liberal and illiberal values, certain forms of fear need to be mobilized and that fearlessness is in itself dangerous. However, my view is that it is not enough to normatively distinguish fears based on their object; even fitting or rightly targeted fears have to be channeled in a properly political way in order to be political. This means that, according to my normative criteria, fears are anti-political not only if they are mistargeted. Fears can also be anti-political if they become boundless; that is, if they are used to justify the use of any means in the political contest, and particularly, resorting to violence. My view entails that we are normatively right in fearing extreme and mistargeted forms of fear because they contribute to an antagonistic vision of politics. But my analysis of the social dimension of fear, and specifically of how certain fears may escalate and cascade in politically polarized contexts, shows that fear is not merely an ‘isolating’ or ‘atomizing’ emotion. Rather, a central problem is that once fear becomes boundless in the public sphere it is difficult to revert it because of the cognitive and social biases that contribute to its propagation. In the end, my effort at introducing criteria to normatively distinguish between types of fear in politics renounces two extremes: an unsatisfactory account of fear as essentially ‘negative’ in politics, but also the ‘normalization’ of fears (such as the ones increasingly observed in politically polarized societies) that contribute to creating and sustaining politics as antagonistic.

Calendario de actividades PRESENTACIÓN: El seminario de filosofía de la economía es un espacio dedicado a la discusión especializada de temas filosóficos de la economía. El objetivo principal del seminario es contribuir al desarrollo de las investigaciones de los asistentes en temas de filosofía de la economía. El diseño de las sesiones es considerando un nivel de posgrado (particularmente en filosofía de la ciencia, filosofía y economía). Pero también es abierto al público en general. Trabajamos con bibliografía especializada, plural e internacional, considerando lo que se trabaja en otros centros especializados del mundo. Nuestro trabajo va en estrecha conexión con los temas que se discuten a nivel internacional por las comunidades de filósofos de la economía. DINÁMICA: Sesiones semanales, los viernes de 10:00 a 12:00. Este semestre serán sesiones virtuales. Enviaremos un enlace unos minutos antes del inicio de la sesión para poder acceder a la plataforma. La presentación estará a cargo de alguno de los asistentes. En caso de que algún tema en particular les interese, pueden escribirnos al correo sfeunam@gmail.com para incorporarlos como expositores. Las exposiciones no deben durar más de 30 minutos, ya que el objetivo es hacer una presentación suscinta del texto para dar paso a la discusión grupal del mismo.

Convocatoria

Crítica invita a enviar manuscritos para un número especial sobre metafísica y representación de las magnitudes extensivas. Temas adecuados incluyen aunque no se limitan a los siguientes: la relación entre metafísica y representación de las magnitudes; teorías realistas e intensionales de magnitudes; el papel de las magnitudes en las leyes y explicaciones científicas; la evaluación de los programas de Patrick Suppes y Hartry Field a la luz de trabajos recientes; la epistemología de la comprensión del contenido de la magnitud; representación analógica de magnitudes y cálculo analógico; metafísica y representación de la magnitud temporal. Los manuscritos deben enviarse en inglés o español, y no pueden superar las 10,000 palabras. El trabajo de académicos en el nivel de profesor asociado e inferior (o equivalente) es particularmente bienvenido. Nos interesan especialmente los manuscritos que abordan los siguientes trabajos de Christopher Peacocke: The Primacy of Metaphysics (2019), Magnitudes: Metaphysics, Explanation, and Perception (2015) y Temporal Perception, Magnitudes and Phenomenal Externalism (2017). Con la ayuda de varias generaciones de filósofos hispano y angloparlantes, Crítica ha contribuido significativamente a establecer la tradición analítica en filosofía en el mundo hispanohablante. Call for Papers Critica invites submissions for its special issue on the metaphysics and representation of extensive magnitudes. Suitable topics include but are not limited to the following: the relationship between the metaphysics and representation of magnitudes; realist and intensional theories of magnitudes; the role of magnitudes in scientific laws and explanations; the evaluation of the programs of Patrick Suppes and Hartry Field in the light of recent work; the epistemology of understanding magnitude content; analog representation of magnitudes and analog computation; the metaphysics and representation of temporal magnitude. Manuscripts should be submitted in English or Spanish and no more than 10,000 words in length. Submissions from scholars at the level of Associate Professor and below (or the equivalent) are particularly welcome. We are especially interested in manuscripts that address the following works by Christopher Peacocke: The Primacy of Metaphysics (2019), Magnitudes: Metaphysics, Explanation, and Perception (2015) and Temporal Perception, Magnitudes and Phenomenal Externalism (2017). with the Centre for Ethics as Study in Human Value Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, University of Pardubice,

Czech Republic Centre for Ethics as Study in Human Value invites graduates in philosophy and neighbouring disciplines to apply for an internationally open PhD scholarship. Alongside conducting research in ethics and political philosophy, a key part of the Centre’s aim is to foster the development of the next generation of academics. To its PhD students, it offers an inspiring environment of a friendly community of researchers and doctoral students, a regular PhD seminar, and the opportunity to engage in the philosophical life of the Centre, including participation in conferences, workshops and seminars. The students can use a well-furnished PhD room and a common room, as well as the Centre’s library and study. Full-time PhD students receive a monthly stipend and have ample funding opportunities for travel. Supported by a major multi-year EU-funded grant, the Centre for Ethics brings together a group of international researchers in ethics and political philosophy to work on issues surrounding the distinctive value of human life. “Un estudio sobre la premisa mayor del silogismo cosmológico kantiano”

RESUMEN: La relación entre máxima lógica y principio sintético de la razón pura (A 307–308/B 364–365) ocupa un lugar fundamental en la “Dialéctica trascendental”. Esto se nota en la formulación de los problemas que la Dialéctica se propone abordar, pues hace una referencia explícita al pasaje de la máxima al principio mencionado (A 308–309/B 365–366); sin embargo, Kant no explica cómo se haría tal pasaje. Aquí se propone una explicación de dicho pasaje a través de un estudio pormenorizado de la premisa mayor del silogismo cosmológico, donde éste ocupa un lugar fundamental. Se sostendrá que tal pasaje sólo es comprensible suponiendo una máxima lógica restringida que permita deducir legítimamente, para el caso de la lógica general, lo incondicionado dado a partir de lo condicionado dado. On Evidence in Philosophy

William G. Lycan ABSTRACT: This book offers an epistemology of philosophy itself, a partial method for philosophical inquiry. The epistemology features three ultimate sources of justified philosophical belief. First, common sense, in a carefully restricted sense of the term—the sorts of contingent propositions Moore defended against idealists and skeptics. Second, the deliverances of well confirmed science. Third, and more fundamentally, intuitions about cases, in a carefully specified sense of that term. Chapters 1–4 expound a version of Moore’s method and apply it to each of several issues.

Blame it on the WTO?: A Human Rights Critique

ABSTRACT: The World Trade Organization (WTO) is often accused of, at best, not paying enough

attention to human rights or, at worst, facilitating and perpetuating human rights abuses. This book weighs

these criticisms and examines their validity, incorporating legal arguments as well as some

economic and political science perspectives. After introducing the respective WTO and human rights regimes, and discussing their legal and normative

relationship to each other, the book presents a detailed analysis of the main human rights concerns

relating to the WTO.

Oxford Studies in Philosophy of Language Volume 1 Ernie Lepore and David Sosa ABSTRACT: Philosophy of language has been at the center of philosophical research since at least Frege’s seminal work at the turn of the 20th century. Global Justice, Natural Resources, and Climate Change

ABSTRACT: It is commonly recognized that in pursuit of climate justice we must navigate many conflicting

claims over natural resources. This has long been obvious in the case of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas

sinks including the atmosphere and forests; but it is ever more apparent that responses to climate change

also threaten to spur new competition over land and extractive resources. This makes climate change an

instance of a broader, more enduring and—for many—all too familiar problem: the problem of

human conflict over how the natural world should be cared for, protected, shared, used, and managed.

Oxford Studies in Philosophy of Religion Volume 9 Lara Buchak, Dean W. Zimmerman, and Philip Swenson ABSTRACT: This is the ninth volume of Oxford Studies in Philosophy of Religion. As with earlier volumes, these essays follow the tradition of providing a non-sectarian and non-partisan snapshot of the subdiscipline of philosophy of religion. This subdiscipline has become an increasingly important one within philosophy over the last century, and especially over the past half century, having emerged as an identifiable subfield with this timeframe along with other emerging subfields such as the philosophy of science and the philosophy of language.
