Un día, el anciano leñador se hallaba trabajando en su huerto; Shiro, que lo acompañaba, de pronto echó a correr hasta llegar a una esquina del huerto. Entonces empezó a ladrar y a escarbar la tierra frenéticamente. -¿Qué ocurre, Shiro? –dijo el anciano, acercándose. Y empezó a cavar en el agujero abierto por Shiro. De repente, un chorro de monedas de oro brotó de aquel hoyo. El anciano recogió como pudo las monedas y volvió a su casa alborozado. Pero su vecino, un labrador avaricioso y cruel que siempre había deseado apoderarse de sus tierras, lo había visto todo.

One day, the old man was working in his garden. Suddenly Shiro started to run around and bark in the corner of the garden. He began to dig and bark frantically. - What’s wrong, Shiro? Asked the old man approaching. And he also started to dig in the hole Shiro had dug. Then gold coins sprang out from the hole. The old man picked them up and ran back home in delight. But his neighbour, an envious and cruel farmer who had always wanted to own his neighbour’s lands, saw everything.

Al día siguiente, el vecino llamó a la puerta del anciano: -Anciano, ¿podrás hacerme el favor de prestarme a tu perro, para que cace unos topillos en mi huerto? El anciano se lo prestó. Nada más volver a su casa, el malvado gritó a Shiro: -¡Vamos, busca un tesoro también para mí! ¡Búscalo o te mataré, chucho miserable! El vecino lo llevaba a rastras por todo su terreno, tirándole de la correa. Finalmente el perro, agotado, se detuvo junto a una piedra. El malvado vecino empezó a cavar esperanzado en ese lugar. Un azadonazo más y… un chorro de cosas salió entonces del agujero, pero… -¡Maldita sea! ¡Solo son tejas rotas, harapos y culebras! Enfurecido, el vecino lanzó un terrible golpe con el azadón contra Shiro. El animal escapó aullando de dolor y llegó a duras penas a la casa del anciano. -¡Shiro, mi pobre Shiro! ¿Qué te ha ocurrido? Su amo trató de salvarlo, pero sus heridas eran tan graves que murió esa misma noche.

The next morning, the wicked neighbour knocked on his door. - Good morning dear neighbour, he said. Could you please lend me your dog? The old man agreed. As soon as he reached his garden, the wicked man shouted: - Come on, find a treasure for me too!! Find it or I will beat you to death, you mongrel! The wicked man dragged him across his garden, pulling hard on his leash. Finally, exhausted, the dog stopped by a big stone. The wicked man started to dig furiously, willing to find gold but then he hit something hard. He shovelled some more earth and suddenly something sprang out of the hole but… - Darn it! It’s just broken tiles, old clothes and snakes!! Furiously, the wicked man hit Shiro with the shovel. Poor Shiro escaped howling in pain and with great difficulty reached his home. - Shiro, my good friend! What has happened to you? The old man cried. He tried to save him but his wounds were so deep that he died on that same night.

2ª mitad El brote de pino creció con una rapidez increíble. Al cabo de solo un mes, sus ramas, que se perdían entre las nubes, daban una sombra mayor que la de cualquier árbol de Japón. -Esto es sin duda otro milagro de mi querido Shiro. Su cuerpo ha muerto, pero su espíritu habita este árbol. Su bondad sigue viva en la savia de este pino, y es tan grande que no para de crecer –decía el anciano a los curiosos que de todas partes acudían a ver el prodigio.

(PASAR A LA LÁMINA SIGUIENTE) 2nd half The sprout grew incredibly fast. In a month, its branches were the lushest in the area and no other tree in Japan would give a better shade. - Undoubtedly, this is another miracle by my beloved Shiro. His body has died but his spirit will live forever in this tree. His kindness is still alive in the sap of this tree and it’s such that it won’t stop growing, said the old man to all the curious people coming to see the miracle. (CHANGE SLIDE)

1ª mitad El anciano lo enterró en el rincón del huerto donde había ocurrido el milagro de las monedas. Allí, levantó una pequeña lápida y plantó un brote de pino en su memoria. (DESLIZAR LENTAMENTE LA LÁMINA SOLO HASTA LA MITAD) 1st half The old man buried him, crying sadly, in the corner of the garden where the miracle of the coins had happened. He put up a tombstone and planted a tree on his behalf.

El malvado vecino estaba lleno de envidia. Una noche que soplaba un fuerte vendaval de invierno hizo, a escondidas, unos cortes en el tronco. La fuerza del viento hizo el resto, y a la mañana siguiente… ¡crash!, el pino amaneció caído.

The wicked neighbour was green with envy. On a windy winter night, unseen by his neighbours, he made some cuts on the tree trunk. The strength of the wind blowing did the rest… and the next morning THUMP! The tree had fallen down!

El anciano sintió mucha pena. Pero se le ocurrió una idea para seguir teniendo un recuerdo de Shiro: “A Shiro le encantaban los pastelillos de harina de arroz. Podría aprovechar la madera del árbol para fabricar un buen mortero en el que moler la harina para hacer los pastelillos, y presentarlos luego como ofrenda en su tumba”. Dicho y hecho: fabricó el mortero, echó en él un buen puñado de granos de arroz y comenzó a molerlos, cuando, de repente… -¡Qué ocurre! ¡Los granos de arroz se están convirtiendo en pepitas de oro! Pero, ¿quién estaba espiando al otro lado de la ventana? El malvado vecino.

The old man felt terribly sorry. But then he had an idea to have something which would remind him of his dear old friend: - Hmmm, let me think… Shiro really enjoyed eating my rice flour pies, so I guess I could make good use of the wood and carve a strong pestle and mortar where to grind the rice and make the pies. Then I could tithe them to Shiro in his graveyard. No sooner said than done. The old man carved the pestle and mortar and then took a handful of rice and started to grind it with the pestle when suddenly he cried out: - But… Good gracious! The grains of rice are becoming gold coins! But… Can you guess who was spying on the other side of the window?? Yes, you are right!! The wicked neighbour!!

Al día siguiente, el vecino acudió con rostro apenado donde el anciano: -Querido anciano, desde el trágico accidente que causó la muerte de tu perrito no he dejado de dar vueltas en mi cabeza pensando cómo te podría compensar por su pérdida. Y hoy se me ha ocurrido que podría ofrendar en la tumba de Shiro esos pastelillos de arroz que tanto le gustaban. Pero sucede que no tengo mortero en mi casa para prepararlos… Si me prestaras el tuyo… El anciano, conmovido, se lo prestó.

The next day, looking terribly unhappy, the wicked neighbour knocked on his neighbours’ door. - My dear neighbour, since that tragic accident which caused your beloved pet’s death, I have been thinking how I could compensate you for his death. Today I realised that I could tithe to your dog with those rice pies that he loved so much. But it happens that I have no pestle and mortar to grind the rice… If you could lend me yours… The old man, touched by his kind words, agreed to lend him the pestle and mortar.

El malvado regresó a toda prisa a su casa, cogió un gran puñado de granos de arroz y los echó al mortero. Molía y molía, pero el oro no aparecía. -¿Dónde estás, maldito oro? Por fin, los granos empezaron a cambiar de color. Pero en lugar del oro, brotaron del mortero trozos de teja, harapos y culebras. ¡Ah! Tanta rabia le dio que arrojó el mortero al fuego del horno.

The wicked man returned quickly home, took a handful of grain rice and put it in the mortar. He ground and ground and ground but no gold coins would appear. - Where are you, damned gold? At last the grains started to change their colour… But instead of gold coins, broken tiles, old clothes and snakes began to come up. Oh gees!! He became so angry that he threw the wooden mortar and pestle into the fire.

Al ver que no le devolvía el mortero, el anciano acudió un día, cuando aún no había salido ni el sol, a casa del vecino. -¡Ah, el mortero! Resulta que al primer golpe que le di con el almirez se rajó y se partió en dos. Como ya no servía para nada, lo eché al fuego, al horno. -Entonces, ¿no queda nada de él? –preguntó el anciano, entristecido. -Sí, claro: las cenizas. Si las quieres, cógelas –respondió cruelmente el vecino. “Primero fue Shiro, luego el árbol, ahora el mortero. De todo eso solo quedan cenizas. Pero son las cenizas de Shiro… Sí, de Shiro, porque su espíritu vivía en el mortero, lo mismo que vivía en el árbol. Las cogeré y las enterraré en su tumba. Así su espíritu volverá junto a él”, pensó el anciano. Y, sin decir nada, se agachó, recogió las cenizas del horno en un tazón y se fue.

The next day, as his neighbour would not give the pestle and mortar back, the old man paid him a visit. - So, you want your pestle and mortar back? Well, you see, when I hit the mortar with the pestle it cracked and it split in two. Being useless, I threw it to the fire and burnt it. - Then, there’s nothing left of it? Asked the old man feeling sad. - Well, yes, the ashes remain. If you want them, you can take them- he answered merciless. First Shiro, then the tree and now the pestle and mortar…Of all that only ashes remain… But they are Shiro’s ashes. Yes, Shiros’ because his spirit lived in the pestle and mortar as well as in the tree. I will collect them and I will bury them in his graveyard. Thus his spirit will go back to him- the old man thought unhappily. And saying no more, he bent down, collected the ashes in a bowl and left.

De regreso a su casa, un misterioso viento frío surgió del bosque de cerezos y rodeó al anciano en un remolino que levantó unas pocas cenizas del tazón. El viento cesó bruscamente, y las cenizas permanecieron flotando en el aire unos segundos. Y de pronto... ¡qué prodigio! Cada brizna de ceniza, al caer sobre los cerezos desnudos, hacía brotar hojas verdes y hermosas flores: el frío invierno se transformaba en alegre primavera. Entusiasmado, el viejo leñador echó a correr hacia la aldea. -¡Mirad, mirad! -decía a sus vecinos, mientras lanzaba cenizas al aire-. Yo, el viejo leñador, puedo hacer ahora florecer los cerezos. Y, allí donde caían las cenizas, brotaban multitud de flores rosas y blancas.

On his way back home, a mysterious cold wind started to blow from the cherry tree garden and surrounded the old man in a whirl which lifted some of the ashes in the bowl. The wind stopped as sharply as it had started but the ashes remained suspended in the air for some seconds. Then, all of a sudden...What a miracle! As they fell on the bare cherry trees, every speck of dust would make green leaves grow and beautiful flowers blossom. The dark winter was turning into merry springtime. Enthusiastically, the old man started to run towards the village. - Look at me! Look at me! He cried out as he threw the ashes up in the air. I can make cherry trees blossom!! And wherever the ashes fell, myriads of pink and white roses would bloom.

La fama del anciano leñador llegó hasta el señor de la comarca, quien lo recompensó con un bolsa de oro y lo nombró su jardinero. El envidioso vecino, al enterarse, sintió renacer la codicia en su interior. Cogió del horno un buen puñado de cenizas y pidió audiencia ante el señor: -¡Mirad, señor, mirad! ¡Yo también sé cómo hacer florecer los árboles! Y arrojó un buen montón de cenizas. Pero las cenizas, en vez de transformarse en flores, crecieron y crecieron formando una enorme nube de polvo que rodeó al señor y a sus soldados, hasta casi ahogarlos.

The fame of this miraculous old man reached the Lord of the Lands, who rewarded him with a bag full of gold coins and appointed him his Official Gardener. When the envious neighbour learnt the piece of news, he felt greediness building up inside him. He took a handful of ashes from the fire and asked to be seen by his Lord. - Look My Lord. I also know how to make trees blossom! And he threw the ashes up in the air. But the ashes, instead of becoming flowers, grew and grew until the Lord and his soldiers were surrounded by a suffocating cloud of dust.

Cuando la nube se disipó por fin, el señor ordenó a sus soldados que apresaran a aquel hombre. El vecino suplicó y suplicó; tanto, que el señor le dijo que él le perdonaría si el anciano, al que había ofendido tantas veces, también lo perdonaba. Inmediatamente, el vecino se hincó de rodillas ante el anciano: -¡Perdonadme, anciano, perdonadme! -suplicaba. - Prometo que, si me perdonáis, no os molestaré más y os ayudaré siempre que me lo pidáis. El buen anciano lo perdonó. Y el vecino cumplió su promesa: desde ese día, trató amablemente al leñador, ayudándole en todo lo que podía. En cada aniversario, lo acompañaba a la tumba de Shiro para recordar al fiel perro. Y se dice que, aún hoy, el viejo leñador sigue haciendo florecer los cerezos al final del invierno, gracias a las cenizas del árbol de Shiro.

When the cloud of dust finally cleared away, the Lord of the Lands ordered his soldiers to arrest that man. He begged and begged so sincerely that the Lord said he would forgive him as long as the old man, whom he had offended so many times, forgave him too. Without hesitating, the wicked man went down on his knees: - Please forgive me, dear neighbour, forgive me! he begged. If you forgive me, I promise I will not bother you ever again and will be willing to help you any time you need me. The good old man forgave him and his neighbour kept his promise. Finally, the Lord of the Lands forgave him too. The evil neighbour was so sorry that he kept his promise. From that day on he was kind to the old man. He helped him willingly. He would go with him to Shiros’s grave on the day of his death to honour and remember the loyal dog. It is said that, even today the old man makes cherry trees blossom at the end of winter thanks to the ashes from Shiro’s tree.

Hace muchos, muchos años, en una aldea de Japón, un viejo leñador se encontró en el bosque un cachorro de perro abandonado, a punto de morir. -¡Pobre perrito! En mi casa estarás a salvo -dijo. El cachorro creció sano y fuerte, con un pelaje blanco y brillante, motivo por el cual decidió llamarlo Shiro, que en japonés significa "blanco". Shiro era muy inteligente y leal, y ayudaba a su amo en muchas tareas. Él lo quería como a un hijo.

A long long time ago in a little village in Japan an old man came across a badly-hurt puppy. He felt so sorry for the animal that he took it home with him. - Poor thing! You will be safe and sound here with me, he said. The puppy grew big and strong, and its hair was so white and bright that he decided to call him Shiro, which in Japanese means “white”. Shiro was so intelligent and clever and helped his master so hard that he loved him like a son.
