Pertinent InnovationSince the foundation of their studio in 1978, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (both born in Basel in 1950) have applied material and constructive logic in the design process as a means to generate diverse and unique schemes. This approach to architecture results in constant innovation and projects of hetero-geneous appearance, as can be seen in the present dossier, which includes an arche-typal museum in Berlin, a pyramidal concert hall in Munich, the extension of a museum in Duisburg, a sculptural tower in Basel, a hos-pital of organic forms in Hillerød, a campus in the mountains of California, and a residential complex on stilts in Moscow.

Herzog & de MeuronDesde la fundación de su estudio en 1978, Jacques Herzog y Pierre de Meuron (nacidos ambos en 1950 en Basilea) han reivindicado el uso de la lógi-ca material y constructiva en el proceso de diseño como mecanismo capaz de generar proyectos tan diversos como únicos. Este modo de hacer arqui-tectura desemboca en una innovación constante y en una producción de apariencia heterogénea, como revela el presente dossier, que incluye un arquetípico museo en Berlín, una sala de concier-tos piramidal en Múnich, la matérica ampliación de un museo en Duisburg, una escultórica torre en Basilea, un hospital de formas orgánicas en Hillerød, un campus paisajístico en California, y un complejo residencial sobre pilotis en Moscú.

Coal Drops YardThe new Coal Drops Yard shopping district, located in the heart of King’s Cross next to Regent’s Canal, has been created through the refurbishment of two old rail warehouses built in the 19th century to receive coal for London as it arrived from the North of England. The design of Thomas Heatherwick, recently inaugurated, extends the gable roofs of the warehouses, rest-ing them on a new, independent structure inter-twined with the preexisting. The roofs rise and stretch to link the two viaducts, generating a new area over the yard and sheltering a large por-tion of the double-height space beneath, which becomes the central point of the development and can also host concerts and performances.

Heatherwick StudioEl nuevo complejo comercial de Coal Drops Yard en el corazón de King’s Cross, junto al Regent’s Canal, se desarrolla a partir de los antiguos almacenes ferroviarios del siglo XIX en los que se recibía y clasificaba el carbón que llegaba desde el norte del país. Construido por la oficina londinense de Thomas Heatherwick y recientemente inaugurado, el proyecto amplía las cubiertas a dos aguas de los depósitos —apoyándolas en una estructura nueva e independiente entrelazada con la preexisten-te—, que se elevan y se estiran para unir los dos viaductos generando un nuevo espacio suspendido sobre el patio y cubriendo una amplia superficie de espacio público.

La firma londinense ha ganado el concurso internacional para construir la nueva sala de conciertos en la ciudad rusa, con un proyecto que se inspira en los aspectos físicos de las ondas sonoras para dibujar con sus formas el fluir de los sonidos.

La oficina de Richard Rogers ha sido la ganadora del concurso para elaborar el master plan ‘Urban Living Room’ en el área de Qianhai en Shenzhen, al sur del país. El esquema cuenta con una estructura elevada ajardinada de 1,2 kilómetros.

Los daneses han sido seleccionados para diseñar el Skypark Business Center South dentro de la Airport City de Luxemburgo, que se convertirá en un nuevo centro de actividad económica, con cuatro plantas destinadas a tiendas, restaurantes y oficinas.

El equipo australiano ha resultado ganador del concurso internacional para construir el nuevo rascacielos, tras imponerse con su propuesta a los otros cuatro finalistas: Zaha Hadid Architects, Warren y Mahoney, Cox Architecture y Elenberg Fraser.

El equipo formado por MLA+, Mobility in Chain y dmau ha sido el ganador del concurso, mientras que el proyecto de Pang Architects + Burgos & Garrido + Hiraiwa Yoshiyuko + MVA + Vision Planning ha recibido una mención honorífica.

Los británicos Adam Caruso y Peter St John construirán la nueva sede del gigante editorial alemán Gruner+Jahr. Con una superficie de 60.000 m², el edificio se ubicará en el área de Lohsepark, como parte del complejo de usos mixtos HafenCity.

The London studio has won the international competition to build the new concert hall in the Russian city, with a project that is inspired by the physical aspects of sound waves to draw with their forms the flow of sounds.

Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners has been confirmed as winner of the design competition for an ‘Urban Living Room’ master plan in the Qianhai area of Shenzhen. The scheme features a 1.2-kilometer elevated sky garden.

The Danish studio has been chosen to design the Skypark Business Center South within Luxembourg’s Airport City, which will become a new economic center, with four levels for retails, restaurants, and offices.

The Australian team has won the international competition to build the new skyscraper, with a proposal that was chosen over those of the other four finalists: Zaha Hadid Architects, Warren and Mahoney, Cox Architecture, and Elenberg Fraser.

El estudio de Belinda Tato y José Luis Vallejo ha presentado uno de los primeros proyectos del plan Cuenca RED para la reactivación del centro histórico de la ciudad ecuatoriana, que convertirá la antigua escuela en un espacio de uso mixto.

El proyecto ganador, del equipo formado por Matos Castillo, Néstor Montenegro y Antoni Gelabert, utiliza piedra de Zamora para integrar el conjunto en su entorno, y cuenta con dos plantas expositivas, un almacén y un salón de actos.

El japonés será finalmente quien dé forma al futuro museo barcelonés, con una propuesta en la que predominan las formas redondeadas, el hormigón blanco y los cierres acristalados. El edificio contará con una superficie construida de 16.000 m².

El Grand Palais dedica al artista catalán una gran retrospectiva que recorre sus siete décadas de creación a través de una selección de 150 de sus principales obras. La muestra permanecerá abierta al público hasta el 4 de febrero de 2019.

Hasta el próximo 7 de diciembre, el COAM acoge una exposición sobre Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza, con motivo del centenario de su nacimiento, comisariada por los arquitectos Vicente, Javier y Marisa Sáenz Guerra, hijos del maestro navarro.

The studio led by Belinda Tato and José Luis Vallejo has released the details of one of the first projects of the Cuenca RED plan to reactivate the historic center of the Equatorian city, which will transform the old school into a mixed-use space.

The winning scheme, developed by Matos Castillo, Néstor Montenegro, and Antoni Gelabert, uses Zamora stone to integrate the building into its environment, and contains two exhibition floors, a warehouse, and an assembly hall.
