La más grande de las islas Jónicas, separada de Ítaca por un estrecho de mar, mantiene intacta su natura-leza exuberante de aguas termales que brotan de la roca, grutas y playas de ensueño. Al misterio de las historias mitológicas que explican su origen se suma el de los ya-cimientos romanos, desde viviendas y un teatro a barcos fascinantes como el recién descubierto hace apenas un año, el cuarto mayor pecio romano hallado en el Medite-rráneo, con 6.000 ánforas a bordo y 33 metros de manga.

The largest of the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia has an exuberant nature characterised by hot springs, underground caves and dreamy beaches. Its allure encompasses ancient myths about its origin and relics of its early Roman occupation, including homes, a theatre and fascinating shipwrecks. A 33m-long boat discovered only a year ago was carrying 6,000 amphorae on board and is one of the four largest Roman shipwrecks ever found in the Med.

PLAYA DE MYRTOS EL DESCANSO. PARA COMER. En Fiskardo, algunos de los edificios palaciegos frente al agua que recuerdan los años de dominio veneciano (entre 1500 y 1797) son hoy restaurantes. La localidad cuenta con un pequeño puerto, que nutre sus cocinas de pescado y marisco frescos. Así, en Lagoudera, lubinas, sardinas, langostas y calamares se suman a ricas recetas locales a base de verduras y carnes como la moussaka.

EAT. Some of the palatial houses on Fiskardo’s waterfront that recall the years of Venetian rule (1500-1797) are now restaurants. The town has a small port that brings exquisite fish and fresh seafood to its kitchens. ÍTACADE EXCURSIÓN. Un trayecto de media hora en ferry separa las islas vecinas de Cefalonia e Ítaca. Los barcos salen de Sami, en la primera, a 30 minutos de Argostoli, y llegan a Pisaetos, en la segunda. Pequeña y mon-tañosa, Ítaca cuenta con grandes atractivos culturales fruto de las civilizaciones que la ocuparon, desde una acrópolis a la iglesia redonda de San Jorge, en la capital, Vathí.

QUÉ VER. Descubierta en una excavación de 1957 en el suroeste de la isla, la Villa Romana de Skala conserva varias habitaciones y un patio construidos en el siglo II d. C., que no fueron destruidos por un incen-dio sufrido en el siglo IV, ni al levantar una iglesia cristiana entre el IX y el X sobre parte del complejo. Los mosaicos de cuatro de los espacios se han conservado sorprendentemente bien.

WHAT TO SEE. Discovered during a 1957 excavation on the island’s southwest, the Roman Villa of Skala includes several rooms and a courtyard built in the 2nd century CE that were not destroyed by a fire in the 4th century, nor by the construction of a Christian church between the 9th and 10th centuries over part of the complex. Mosaics in four of the spaces have been surprisingly well preserved.

ON EXCURSION. A half-hour ferry trip separates the neighbouring islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca. Boats leave Sami (30 minutes from Argostoli) on Kefalonia, and arrive at Pisaetos, on Ithaca.
