EDITORIAL
After the opening round in the classic landscape of Muro Leccese, here we are in Spanish lands. The prestigious venue of Zuera is the fi rst frontier of a kart-racing Europe that this year, more than ever, will be redesigned on the map at the farthest latitudes. Europe is on everyone’s lips these days and karting is up front and center of
current events: the time has come to face global challenges, to enter scenarios that are international in nature and sight, to test our differences on common ground. This is the European Championship, ladies and gentlemen: a dream for many; a goal for everyone.

As Mayor of the City of Zuera, I’d like to welcome all participants and fans of the European Karting Championship, a major motorsport series that continues to grow in prestige year after year. We are honored, once again, to host an event of such high caliber at the national and international level at our very own Zuera International Circuit.
Over the years, sporting events like this have helped to make Zuera famous as a modern and dynamic municipality, eager to embrace the world of sports and add the
element of competition to its already rich offer of cultural and leisure events. Culture, sports and leisure: these are the key elements for any city that aspires to be open to the world and attract the broadest range of visitors and tourists.
In addition to saluting participants and fans of the European Karting Championship, I also wish to congratulate organizers on the expertise acquired over the years, ever since they took their fi rst steps in 2007. We are honored to welcome them and the motorsport world once more to the Circuito Internacional de Zuera, our city’s pride and joy.
I am confi dent that this important European event, scheduled from May 29th to June 1st, will spark the enthusiasm and interest of our residents and attract the attention of sport fans far and wide.
WELCOME TO ZUERA
03
It is a great honor to welcome the best representatives of international karting to Zuera for the second round of the KF and KF Junior European Championship.
The great competition is gathering the world’s most esteemed kart drivers in the lands of Aragón, thanks to the trust that the FIA has placed in the fantastic management team of the Circuito Internacional de Zuera.
Let me remind everyone of the important improvements to the track and to venue facilities that have guaranteed the renewal of CIK-FIA homologation: it is thanks to its spirit of renovation that the Zuera Circuit continues to be an international standard of excellence. We are proud that our country has
organizers like the Zuera Racing Sport Club, capable of attracting the most prestigious events on calendar, year after year.
Of course, my greatest salute goes to the true protagonists of this motor feast: drivers. Supported by their families, teams, and friends, they will offer us a fantastic show that everyone can enjoy. I am certain that the event, which is part of the Racing for Spain
program, will be an absolute success, just like all previous events held in Zuera in the past.
Finally, I would like to extend a special thank you to the public institutions of Aragón and to the sponsors and media channels that nurture the growth of motorsport in our country and internationally. It is thanks to all of them if today our region gets to enjoy the best show karting has to offer.

CIRCUITThe impressive Spanish circuit, located close to Zaragoza, is one of the most prestigious racing venues of the Old Continent. Every year is stage to many top level international karting events and today it is hosting the second round of the CIK-FIA European Championship for both the KF and KFJ categories.
The Spanish track is one of the world’s longest layouts for kart racing.Fast, with straights alternating to tight hairpins and challenging bends, this technical circuit requires pure driving talent as much as it does great concentration and considerable race management skills. www.circuitointernacionaldezuera.es

It is true, race events get won or lost on the last lap of the fi nal race. Yet, drivers have to manage a whole weekend to get there. Here we take a look at how the KF and KFJ European title contenders did in the 1st round at the La Conca circuit (Muro Leccese, Italy): from the fast runners throughout to those who mastered the prefi nal and the top three who landed on the fi nal podium.
0 6
ROUND 1 REPORT - KF
The winner is Callum Ilott (Zanardi/Parilla), who leads the fi nal from start to fi nish, proving that he has talent, but also that team opted for the right strategy. The Zanardi Strakka crew and Ilott, in fact, decided to switch to 2 new tires as early as the prefi nal. The goal was winning the race in order to conquer the best spot on the start grid of the fi nal (read “pole position” - in other words front row, inside lane) and so maximize the chances of topping the podium. And that’s exactly how things went.Niko Kari (Tony Kart/Vortex) closes the race behind Ilott, confi rming the good state he’s shown since the start of the season. He never really posed a threat to his rival this weekend, but his result is excellent, especially considering the level of competition he was up against. Lando Norris (FA Kart/Vortex) completes the podium, his fi rst ever as a KF rookie. And he actually gives the impression he could’ve done better, judging from his speed across Saturday’s heats. At the start of the fi nal he gets caught up in “traffi c” and is pushed back, but he does a great job of rising up to the top 3, driving the fastest lap of the race. Right below the podium there is Felice Tiene (CRG/TM),
author of an incredible climb from the rear that leaves everybody stunned: good job! His connational Alessio Lorandi (Tony Kart/TM), instead, is unlucky. The Baby Race driver, in fact, started the fi nal from a tough position and nine laps later he was forced to retire.A round of applause goes, instead, to Pedro Hiltbrand (CRG/TM), who catches a glimpse of the podium after being one of the fastest all weekend. In the fi nal he is running in fourth place, when he hears someone “nocking” behind him. The one asking to be let through is his teammate Tiene, who apparently is CRG’s “fi rst” driver since Pedro steps aside and lets him by. All things considered, the Spanish driver more than proved he has what it takes to be up front.Let’s close with two names who we are used to seeing in very differet areas of the standings: Karol Basz (Tony Kart/Vortex) and defending World champion Tom Joyner (Zanardi/Parilla), respectively ninth and tenth at the end of the Muro Leccese opener: well below their standards, but there are three rounds to go and all is yet to be seen. Based on what we saw in Italy, it’s going to be a tight fi ght the whole way through!

GALLERY On the opening round of the European championship for the KF and the KFJ, the gorgeous summer weather and blazing sun certainly helped make the Muro Leccese weekend sizzle. Shifting our focus from the heat on track to the zest of the grand show, the Drivers’ Presentation ceremony offered a colorful dance of fl ags from all over the world, reminding us that global acclaim is what give CIK-FIA series their fame, along with seamless organization, top quality standards, and the best expression of competitiveness one can fi nd in the sport of karting.

Enaam Ahmed (FA Kart/Vortex) follows up on his early season successes on WSK fi elds by proving he is the man to beat, for now, also in the 2014 CIK-FIA European title hunt. He secures his triumph at the start of the fi nal, pouncing from third place into the lead. This is where he stays until the fi nish.Behind him it’s a whole different story as “madness” ensues. In the end the runner-up spot goes to Logan Sargeant (FA Kart/Vortex), who wins the “duel” with Devlin Defrancesco (Tony Kart/Vortex). After dominating the heats and winning the prefi nal Defrancesco was the favorite going into the fi nal, but a bad start pushed him back and forced him to race “up hill”: at the end of a good recovery, he has to make do with the lowest step of the podium. Alex Vartanyan (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart/TM) round off the top 5 with good performances (the Italian even caught a glimpse of the podium in the fi rst half of the race). Max Fewtrell (FA Kart/Vortex) snatches sixth place from Mick Junior (Tony Kart/Vortex), who closes seventh. Behind him at the fi nish there is Lessenes (Kosmic/Parilla), author of a mad climb past 25 rivals from start to fi nish. Too
bad that afterwards race commissioners penalize him for a contact with Yeu Yang (FA Kart/Vortex) in the early phases of the race and send him down to P17. It is David Beckmann (Tony Kart/Vortex) who thus inherits 8th place and also the “kangaroo” prize for the best rebound: 22 overtakes! A great success for the Morsicani Racing driver that confi rms the talent for speed displayed on Friday, when he drove the second overall fastest time, behind teammate Defrancesco. The other great “climbers” of the fi nal are Tonteri (Art GP/TM) and Correa (Energy/TM), both able to rise 16 spots up the fi eld to close respectively 11th and 12th, and Fernandez (Kosmic/TM), who improves on an unlucky prefi nal by 11 positions and ends 21st. Things go badly, instead, for Pull and Petrov. At the start of the fi nal Team DR’s Russian “knight” quickly gets up to 11th right behind Pull, too close though: he gets hooked on his rear end. Result? Petrov slips down and ends his rebound in P19, while his rival has to retire. The same goes for CRG’s Eliseo Martinez, out shortly after the start, even if so far this season he gave the impression that he could be a top KFJ player even as a rookie. We’ll have to wait and see.

The queen category of non-shifter karts is especially competitive this year, with all the “star” names of international karting ready to prove their worth. The European title hunt is open to 69 kids from 17 nations that represent the European continent far and wide, but also Asia, Africa and the Americas. A truly international community competing for 1 crown - this means one thing only: a breathtaking sport show! And, like in the Junior fi eld, two drivers have been invited as “wild cards” in the Spanish event, which marks the midway point of the Championship.

NEW POINT SYSTEM
The phases worth points towards the 2014 CIK-FIA title of European Champion are the HEATS and the FINAL. Points are assigned to the TOP 10 of the combined Intermediate Standings (established after the Heats) and the TOP 15 of the Final.
CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM In both classes, the Championship runs over 4
rounds. Each event will comprise Free Practice,
Qualifying Practice, Qualifi cation Heats with the
possibility of a Second Chance Heat*, and a fi nal
phase made of one or two Prefi nals* and the Final.
(*Depending on the number of participants). In each
round, points are assigned to the Top 10 of the
Intermediate Classifi cation and the Top 15 of the Final
race. The title of CIK-FIA European Champion will be
awarded to the Driver with the most points overall,
with the possibility to discard the worst Intermediate
result and the worst Final result.
ELIGIBLE KARTS & EQUIPMENTThe Championship is reserved respectively for
KF2 and KF3 karts, as defi ned in the Technical
Regulations. At Scrutineering, each Driver is entitled
to submit: 2 chassis of the same make, 2 engines of
the same make, plus 3 sets of Dunlop “slicks” if in
KF, or 2 sets of Vega “slicks” if in KFJ (tires will be
allocated by random draw). Karts must be presented
in full double confi guration (“dry” and “wet”) and
ready for use, with engines. In both Championships,
from Qualifying Practice on, each Driver is allowed
to use a maximum of: 2 chassis and 2 engines (those
marked at Scrutineering) and 2 sets of both slicks and
wet tires (a total of 4 front/4 rear tires of both types).
STARTING PROCEDUREAt the end of the Formation Lap, Drivers will proceed
at a reduced and constant speed towards the Start
Line, creating two lines of karts. Partial crossing of
the lanes is liable to a 3 sec. penalty, while leaving
the corridor completely and/or overtaking will be
sanctioned with a 10 sec. penalty. If a Driver stops
during the Formation Lap, he may try to start again
from the back of the formation. If he tries to re-start
ahead of the fi eld he will be excluded from the event.
Karts must maintain their position until the start
signal is given. If the Track Clerk/Race Director is not
satisfi ed, he will switch on the orange light, which
means that another Formation Lap must be covered.
SUSPENDING & RESUMING A RACEIn case of an accident blocking the track or dangerous
conditions, the Track Clerk/Race Director may decide
to stop the race, ordering the showing of the RED FLAG
on the Finish Line and at Marshals’ posts. If the race is
a Practice: all karts must reduce speed and return to
the Service Park. If the race is a Heat, a Prefi nal, or a
Final: all karts must reduce speed and will be directed
either to the Service Park entrance, or asked to stop
on track. If the race is suspended defi nitely, the
classifi cation will be as it is at the end of the lap prior
to the stop. If the race is to resume, Drivers will be
warned at least 10 minutes in advance. The race will
resume under “SLOW” speed (YELLOW FLAG).
