Estas dos poblaciones vivieron su propia etapa de bonanza entreaquellos quienes buscaban fortuna en el Nuevo Mundo. Cuando eloro ya no estaba disponible, los mineros voltearon su atenciónhacia otros metales, en especial hacia la plata. San Antonio triplicósu población entre 1857 y 1864, para este entonces, la poblaciónlocal no era suficiente y los mineros eran traídos de localidadeslejanas. Between 1857 and 1864 alone thepopulation of San Antonio nearly tripled.But labor shortages soon forced thesetowns to call for workers from around thecountry and mining companies came andwent. Near the end of the 60s El Triunfo’spopulation overtook San Antonio’s andby 1895, it grew larger than San José,Todos Santos and Santiago. Only LaPaz, which steadily fed the fortune-seekers with supplies, was able tosurpass this rapid growth.
Foreigners arrived steadily, helping tomold the character of this hub ofactivity. Although just 100 lived in allthe peninsula in 1857, San Antonioalone registered 152 by 1864—mainlyIrish, German and English. FewEuropeans arrived with wives andchildren and southern California filledthe gap. This mix of faces andcultures helped form a bustling townwith as many as 10,000 miners in itshay day. El Triunfo’s smoke stack,built by the Progresso MiningCompany, stands today as areminder of the triumphs anddefeats of these fortune-seekingpioneers, and the old antique pianomuseum remains a symbol of thecultural growth demanded by athriving community of propserouscitizens.

very winter season thousands of whalesmigrate from the cold north to the warm watersof Baja California’s central Pacific coast.
It is common to spot around 20 different species ofwhales such as grays, humpbacks, blues, fins,Bryde’s, seis, minkes, orcas and sperm whales—graywhales being the most commonly seen.
Bahia Magdalena and the San Ignacio lagoon areperfect places to visit if you’d like to see gray whales,while Bahia de los Angeles is a haven for humpbacksand blue whales.
The gray whale migrates along the North Americancoastline, from the Bering Sea to their breeding sitesin Baja California, Mexico. It is believed that they livearound 40 years. International treaties, the Mexicangovernment and private efforts have helped the graywhale community grow from 2,000 whales at the endof the last century to around 20,000 whales today.

lifetimes. Scientists believe that the male humpbackscan sing complex songs that last up to 30 minutes andthat all Humpbacks off the coasts of Hawaii, Japanand Mexico sing the same song. Humpback whalesnever sleep—half of their brain is always alert whilethe other half rests. Humpbacks are also famous fortheir spectacular breaching (jumping out of the water).
Cabo San Lucas is well known for its comfortablewhale watching tours, so if you feel that a trip up theBaja Peninsula might be too adventurous for you, thenyou can always book an exciting two hour whale-watching tour by Land’s End.
To enjoy your whale watching experience ask yourtour operator to provide you with proper guidelines tointeract with the whales and to ensure a safe visit foryou and our lovely whale friends. Teach your youngones the beauty of interacting with nature and torespect the wildlife around us.

Cabo Marine Guide had a chanceto interview Cabo’s renowned resident pirate.
MB: Actually, that’s an interesting story! Historically,galleons hauling goods from Manila in the Philippines,back home to Acapulco, used the Arch of Cabo SanLucas as a landmark. Although they could use theNorth Star to calculate their latitude, a portabletimepiece hadn’t yet been invented, so they had noway to compute their longitude. Instead, they followeda “great circle” across the Pacific and kept watch fortheArch.When I first came to Cabo in 1992, I recognized agreat potential for tourism here and I decided that theultimate charter business would be a pirate ship cruiseon the most authentic vessel I could possibly find thatmatched the local history. Eventually, I acquired theoldest tall ship in the world, because it’salmost identical to the ship Thomas Cavendish usedas a privateer when he became the first European tovisit Cabo San Lucas in 1587.
MB: The was built in 1885 by MasterShipwright Samuel Richards in Lowestoft, England.She was originally built to carry various types of cargoin very heavy seas and her first voyages were in thetreacherous North Sea. She's a ship with a very richhistory.

CMG: These are fascinating businesses. Whatprepares a person for such a diversity of endeavors?
CMG: Do you have any advice for others who want tofollow their dreams?
MB: You're right—sailing is my passion and I alsoenjoy high-tech speed sailing as well as maritimehistory and culture. I recently purchased an islandresort in the South Pacific which I intend to developinto a nautical center focusing on the lost sailingculture of the Polynesian people.
MB: Well, I started at a pretty young age by bribing arecruiter to let me join the Merchant Marines atfourteen. I sailed the world with them and the more Ilearned about sailing ships and the sea, the more Irealized that adventure was in my blood.
MB: The best advice in the world is to make yourdreams your driving force in life—Find your passionand go for it.
