Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesPUBLICACIONES CIENTÍFICASSolar pond powered liquid desiccant evaporative coolingPublicada en Science Direct, 13/01/2016.

Liquid desiccant cooling systems (LDCS) are energy efficient means of providing cooling, especially when poweredby low-grade thermal sources. In this paper, the underlying principles of operation of desiccant cooling systems areexamined, and the main components (dehumidifier, evaporative cooler and regenerator) of the LDCS are reviewed. The evaporative cooler can take the form of direct, indirect or semi-indirect. Relative to the direct type, the indirecttype is generally less effective. Nonetheless, a certain variant of the indirect type – namely dew-point evaporativecooler – is found to be the most effective amongst all. The dehumidifier and the regenerator can be of the same typeof equipment: packed tower and falling film are popular choices, especially when fitted with an internal heatexchanger. The energy requirement of the regenerator can be supplied from solar thermal collectors, of which a solarpond is an interesting option especially when a large scale or storage capability is desired.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesAn integrated combined cycle system driven by a solar tower: AreviewPublicada en Science Direct, 05/01/2016.

An integrated solar combined cycle system (ISCCS) basically consists of three major components: a combined cyclegas turbine (CCGT), solar steam generator (SSG) and solar field. The solar tower (ST) technology is one of thepotential candidates that can provide the solar field. In this study, progress in the development of a ST-ISCCS hasbeen investigated. It is found that a lot of research attention has been given to the ST technology with somecommercial ST power plants operating in different parts of the world. This technology has enormous potential forintegration with the ISCCS from thermodynamic and economic perspectives. Nevertheless, the maturity level of theST technology is lower than that of the parabolic trough concentrator (PTC). Very limited research has been directedtoward the development of the ST-ISCCS. In addition, most of the ISCCS power plants in operation today employ thePTC technology with no known commercial ST-ISCCS power plant existing at present (2015).

Economic and environmental scheduling of smart homes withmicrogrid: DER operation and electrical tasksPublicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 25/12/2015.

Microgrids are promising in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, compared with the currentcentralised energy generation systems. Smart homes are becoming popular for their lower energy cost and provisionof comfort. Flexible energy-consuming household tasks can be scheduled co-ordinately among multiple smart homesto reduce economic cost and CO2. However, the electricity tariff is not always positively correlated with CO2 intensity. In this work, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to schedule the energy consumptionwithin smart homes using a microgrid system. The daily power consumption tasks are scheduled by couplingenvironmental and economic sustainability in a multi-objective optimisation with -constraint method. The twoconflicting objectives are to minimise the daily energy cost and CO2 emissions. Distributed energy resources (DER)operation and electricity-consumption household tasks are scheduled based on electricity tariff, CO2 intensity andelectricity task time window. The proposed model is implemented on a smart building of 30 homes under threedifferent price schemes.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesSoftware consolidation as an efficient energy and cost savingsolutionPublicada en ScienceDirect _TELECO, 21/12/2015.

Virtual machines (VM) are used in cloud computing environments to isolate different software. They also support livemigration, and thus dynamic VM consolidation. This possibility can be used to reduce power consumption in thecloud. However, consolidation in cloud environments is limited due to reliance on VMs, mainly due to their memoryoverhead. For instance, over a 4-month period in a real cloud located in Grenoble (France), we observed that 805VMs used less than 12% of the CPU (of the active physical machines). This paper presents a solution introducingdynamic software consolidation. Software consolidation makes it possible to dynamically collocate several softwareapplications on the same VM to reduce the number of VMs used. This approach can be combined with VMconsolidation which collocates multiple VMs on a reduced number of physical machines. Software consolidation canbe used in a private cloud to reduce power consumption, or by a client of a public cloud to reduce the number of VMsused, thus reducing costs.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesSolar energy potentials in strategically located cities in Nigeria:Review, resource assessment and PV system designPublicada en Science Direct_Publicaciones Fotovoltaica, 07/12/2015.

Ensuring energy security increasingly requires expanding both yield and resilience of supply through sourcediversification. In this study, the current energy situation of Nigeria is presented through a detailed literature review. The survey reveals that access to the national grid is limited, and the power delivered to areas classified as urbanwith grid connection is very unreliable. An initial assessment of the potential utilization of solar based technologies forelectricity generation is presented for three strategically located Nigerian cities of Onitsha, Kano and Lagos. Thesecities are known for their large commercial activities, and their frequent power outages hinder their business andsocio-economic development. The solar resources are modeled using synthetic hourly meteorological data for acomplete year in typical meteorological year format. On an annual basis, Kano has the largest average daily globalhorizontal resources (6.08 kWh m2), while these resources are practically equal for Onitsha (4.43 kWh m2) andLagos (4.42 kWh m2). For dual axis tracking, which maximizes utilization of solar resources, the monthly range ofdaily average solar insolation for all locations varies between 3.65 kWh m2 and 8.00 kWh m2. A standalonephotovoltaic system on a tilted surface is sized to meet a representative household demand based on intuitive andnumerical simulation sizing methodologies.

‘Photovoltaic landscapes’: Design and assessment. A critical reviewfor a new transdisciplinary design visionPublicada en Science Direct_Publicaciones Fotovoltaica, 07/12/2015.

Ground-mounted large photovoltaic (PV) arrays are the least-cost design solution for installing PV, they account forthe majority of the solar power installed today. With the increase of both the number and size of installations, theattention to their impacts in terms of land-use and land-transformation is growing, as well as concerns aboutlandscape preservation and possible losses of ecosystem services. The community acceptance is often a barrier. The current design is generally straight-forward and is aimed to the maximize energy generation given a certain landarea. This paper brings forward the idea that PV systems should be designed as an element of the landscape theybelong to, according to an inclusive design approach that does not focus only on the overall energy efficiency of thesystem, but extends to other additional ecological and landscape objectives.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesAn improved control scheme for grid connected doubly fedinduction generator considering wind-solar hybrid systemPublicada en Science Direct, 02/12/2015.

This paper proposes a wind-solar hybrid generation scheme, along with an improved control strategy for gridconnected wind energy conversion system (WECS) considering parameter uncertainty. In the proposed scheme, aphoto voltaic (PV) supplemented rotor power management scheme (RPMS) has been developed for doubly fedinduction generator (DFIG) with stator connected to grid. The topology of RPMS is implemented in isolation with thegrid during entire period of DFIG operation. The proposed scheme ensures an increased output power delivered tothe grid during low wind speeds. The DFIG control scheme require accurate information for the rotor position andspeed at all operating conditions, which is estimated in the proposed method without any significant dependency onmachine parameters. The control strategy proposed in this paper is implemented with a 2.5 kW DFIG using dSPACEDS1104 module with PC interface, which produced satisfactory results.
