WELCOME TO OUR EUCARISTIC CELEBRATION

Today we enter into the fourth week of Advent, and a short week it is. With Christmas coming on Wednesday, there are just over two full days of this fourth week, which ends as the sun goes down and we celebrate our first Christmas Mass on Tuesday at 4:00pm. Last year we had a children’s Mass at 4:00 PM. There were not a lot of children present but, I thought it would be great to try again. Our small, but committed children’s choir will lead the song and there will be a bent toward the children in the liturgy. Of course, all ages are welcome as I know 4:00 PM has become the most popular time for Christmas Masses in just about all of our parishes. Please do note the time change from Sunday Mass times for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord, Christmas day, is extended into eight days in what is known as the “Octave of Christmas”. This is to accentuate, like we do at Easter, the nature of this celebration – so big that it cannot be contained within one day. For the week following Christmas Day, each day is celebrated as a solemnity, as is the final day, January 1, with the celebration of Mary, the Mother of God. The Christmas Season is celebrated through various feasts of the Church, concluding with the Baptism of the Lord, this year, on January 12. The other great feasts are the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Jo-seph and the Epiphany of the Lord. These days remind us that the Christmas Season, unlike the shop-ping season, extends well past Christmas Day. It is sometimes hard to celebrate in this way because, by the time Christmas comes, we get all “sung out’ of the joy of Christmas. Some remove their trees and Christmas decorations within a day or two – still within the Octave of Christmas! I encourage all of us to keep the Christmas joy in our hearts during the entire season. It is a wonderful way to witness to our dis-cipleship in Jesus Christ, the reason for the season.

I want to be sure to acknowledge the many people from our parish who work extra hard during these final days of Advent in preparation for Christmas. Our singers and musicians practice and fine-tune the Christmas songs. (Hopefully you can come to the Lessons and Carols this Sunday at 2:00 PM.) Those who create the festive environment in the church stitch and climb ladders and gather candles and greens and colors to brighten our worship space, lectors practice and often do extra duty for the Masses, as do our Eucharistic Ministers. I especially encourage and thank our greeters who come early and welcome all who enter, a number of whom only enter the church a couple of times a year. Then there are the many others in our parish who help in unseen and quiet ways to make the celebrations here special. THANK YOU to one and all!

It is important that we, each and all, extend hospitality to our visitors, as the Scriptures encourage us to do. We often don’t know why people are coming or what is going on their lives. An extra smile, a word of greeting or making room in the pew for newcomers and late-comers, can make a difference in their lives, including whether or not they consider coming back. Thank you all for being that welcoming spirit to others!

Let us enter into these last Advent days and the Christmas Season with a spirit of wonder and mys-tery. Joseph never would have embraced his dream and what the angel said to him if he could not hear with his heart.

Hoy entramos en la cuarta semana de Adviento, y es una semana muy corta. Con la llegada de la Navidad el Miércoles, hay poco más de dos días completos de esta cuarta semana, que termina cuando se pone el sol y celebramos nuestra primera Misa de Navidad el Martes a las 4:00 PM. El año pasado tuvimos un Misa de niños a las 4:00 PM. No había muchos niños presentes, pero, creo que será exce-lente celebrar la "Misa de los Niños" una vez más. Nuestro pequeño pero comprometido coro de niños dirigirá la canción y habrá una inclinación hacia los niños en la liturgia. Por supuesto, todas las edades son bienvenidas, ya que sé que la Misa de las 4:00 PM se ha convertido en el horario más popular para las Misas de Navidad en varias de nuestras parroquias. Tenga en cuenta el cambio de las Misas de No-chebuena y el día de Navidad. La solemnidad de la Natividad del Señor, el día de Navidad, se extiende a ocho días, que se conoce como la "Octava de la Navidad". Esto es para acentuar, igual como lo hacemos en La Pascua, la na-turaleza de esta gran celebración que no puede ser contenida en un día. Estos días nos recuerdan que la tem-porada de Navidad, a diferencia a la temporada de compras que se extiende mucho más allá del día de Navidad. A veces es difícil celebrar de esta manera porque, para cuando llega la Navidad, el cansancio de las compras y fiestas opaca la alegría de la Navidad. Algunos quitan los árboles y las decoraciones navideñas en uno o dos días todavía dentro de la octava de Navidad. Les invito a guardar la alegría na-videña en nuestros corazones durante toda la temporada. Es una manera maravillosa de testimoniar nuestro discipulado en Jesucristo, la razón de la temporada. Quiero reconocer a las muchas personas de nuestra parroquia que trabajan muy duro durante estos últimos días de Adviento en preparación para la Navidad. Nuestros cantantes y músicos practican y afi-nan las canciones navideñas. (Esperemos que pueda venir a las Lecciones y Villancicos este Domingo a las 2:00 PM.) Aquellos que crean el ambiente festivo en la iglesia subiendo y bajando escaleras y re-cogiendo velas y luces de colores para iluminar nuestro espacio de adoración, los lectores practican y a menudo hacen un deber extra para los Misas, al igual que nuestros ministros eucarísticos. Animo y agradezco especialmente a nuestros ujieres que vienen temprano y dan la bienvenida a todos los que entran, varios de los cuales sólo entran en la iglesia un par de veces al año. Luego están los muchos otros en nuestra parroquia que ayudan de maneras sin ser vistos o escuchados para hacer que las cele-braciones aquí sean especiales. ¡GRACIAS a todos!

Recently a member of the Serra Club of Reno expressed the desire to establish a challenge match up to $75,000 for the benefit of seminarian education. This anonymous donor offered to match donations made by January 31, 2020, up to a total of $75,000. All funds will be held in the Thomas S. Dolan Endowment for Seminarians, which is restricted in use for the educational needs of the Diocese of Reno Seminarians.

I’m gratified to witness the men and women of the SERRA Club of Reno supporting the religious of our diocese through prayer, community gatherings and financial contributions. I am especially grateful for this matching gift that enables us to raise funds for seminarian education and to continue to grow the Thomas S. Dolan Endowment for Seminarians.

Educating one seminarian takes six-eight years and costs approximately $50,000 per seminarian each year. In the past three years, we have ordained five men as priests for this diocese, and they are now working alongside their brother priests ministering to Catholics throughout northern Nevada. Currently, 3 young men are studying to become priests for the diocese.

I invite you to consider prayerfully whether you might be able to help us maximize this challenge by making a do-nation toward the match by January 31, 2020.
