Prigueux is not a city very well-known; in fact, there are no many
people who know it, but, people who have visited this wonderful place, know
the most typical French spirit. It is one of the most representative French
cities.
Prigueux is placed in the heart of the Dordogne, being itself the
capital of Perigord's region. It represents the center of what French call the
White Perigord due to the abundant limestone.
The easier way to get there is by car, so the best advice is to hire a
car and to drive there from the airport. The nearest airport is the airport of
Bergerac, it is only 30 minutes by car to Prigueux. Another choice is to
arrive to Bordeaux and to pick there a direct train to Prigueux, there are
trains Bordeaux-Prigueux each hour. (In the annexes you can find links
with the addresses of the airports and trains)
It is a land of tradition and gastronomy. A visitor cannot leave this city
without tasting its flavors. The most typical products are wine, duck, truffle
and foie-grass. And the perfect place to find them is the popular market of
Saturdays.

Prigueux is also a city of history. Time stands still there but history
has left its marks. The old part of Prigueux is brimming with vestiges from
the Gallo-Romans days. It is also teeming with signs of cross-fertilization and
memories. As you can see in the map below we can distinguish two different
historic areas within the city: the Gallo-Roman and the Medieval-
Renaissance.
GALLO-ROMAN AREA
In order to visit this part of the city, the best way to do it is following
the brown circuit marked on the map. Not only you would enjoy the
monuments and ruins but you can also imagine how daily life was at that
time. Each number corresponds to a monument; the most important is the
(I) Veson Temple, the sacred part of the town. Vesunna Museum, the
Barrire Castle and the Gallo-Roman Wall are other monuments to be
appreciated.

MEDIEVAL- RENAISSANCE AREA
As we have done with the Gallo-Roman area, there is also a
numbered map with a brown circuit to be followed. The tour begins in the
Mataguerre Tour which is the last medieval bastion still preserved and
culminates at the cathedral. The name of the cathedral is Saint Front (World
Heritage of Humanity). It is a key step in the pilgrimage to Santiago deCompostela. Saint-Front Cathedral is half Byzantine and half Roman. Around

it, you will find countless medieval homes, and ornate townhouse doors
concealing often tortuous but nonetheless splendid staircases dating back to
the Renaissance. Another must to see is Limogeanne Street, the perfect
place if you are looking for souvenirs.
