Supervision Minutes: - 03.01.13
- Discussed the complaint that I emailed PE about and refected on my eelings about
this and what learning I can take away rom this.
I mentioned that I felt hurt and upset by the complaint but after some consideration had
decided to move past it, PE mentioned that deciding to move past it is not reective, that
this is putting the situation ‘on a shelf’ and not unpacking the emotions related to this. I
agreed and also acknoledged that I could use this an opportunity for greater self
aareness and to be more e!plicit ith my stand-in "## e!actly hat I am doing as ell
as spending more time in cafeteria area during breaks.
-Discussed PLS
I also discussed my feelings around the fact that although initially nobody said that Icouldn’t do the referral, I felt that I as discouraged from doing so by sta$ and then
hen a crisis occurred the referral as taken aay from me.
%lso, the fact that hen the referral as made it in the conte!t of crisis intervention
rather than being around longer-term management of the #&’s needs in the situation.
'e discussed ho both the mother and #& ere service users ith individual needs in
the scenario and ho my perspective di$ered from sta$ at the day centre ho failed to
see #& as carer. (urthermore, e considered possible discrimination in members of
sta$’s assertion that #& as more at risk from her mother being in hospital and her being
home by herself that, #& acting as a carer ithout support, despite them being aare
that #& as taking care of her mother. 'e considered mother’s possible motivation forrefusing support from social services in the past including past e!perience and feeling
that daughter )#&* ill be taken aay from her.
PE then +uestioned the appropriateness of #& being in ork-based training if she as
independent enough to take care of her mother and suggested that this may have been
done by social services as a ay to transfer responsibility for #& today services. 'e ent
further into the implications for service users hose needs are partially met by current
service, I as able to link this to an earlier placement in a / here service users
ere rarely seen as the all lived in residential homes so needs ere met and risk
managed by sta$ there.
'e debated a bit about the role of intervention )supporting versus rescuing* andspeculated on hat #& may be e!periencing apart from hat she )#&* had shared ith
me, hether she as happy as a carer and hether anyone had the right to make the
!udgement that she needed support.
%nd, I also discussed my practice and ho henever I spoke to sta$ I presented my
arguments for making the referral as a means to possibly o$er a perspective that they
had not considered.

PE discussed the conventions of academic riting and suggested changes that need to
be made to my P0# including my use of the ord normalisation, she told me that this
term as not the same as #ocial 1ole 2alorisation and the former as archaic and
discriminatory due to ideology concerned ith making people ‘normal’.
PE said that P0# as incomplete as I had not taken complaint to a decision making
forum, I e!plained that there as no form for complaints to be heard and that action that
ould be taken as decided by the operational manager alone. 'e discussed this briey
and I told my PE that I ill try to put discussion of this complaint on the agenda for our
ne!t team meeting )that as happening later that day* or the one after this. PE
suggested that changes need to be made to the content, structure and terminology of
my P0#, that I should use less description, more reection and include references.
- Discussed obser#ed practice
PE agreed that I being observed chairing a service user team meeting ould be better
than an everyday activity as there is more to unpick and reect on post observe practice.
%lso briey discussed the possible oppression inherent in a service user team meeting
being chaired by a non service user and ho services must obtain feedback for +uality
assurance under la hoever this is often a bo! ticking e!ercise.
- Discussed my time sheet and the act that people looking at it may eel that I may not
be doing enough hours due to me $nishing %& minutes earlier than my super#isor due to
transport issues.
PE said that I need to make a decision about hat to do about the current issue and feed
this back to her ne!t supervision.
