THE BREAD OF LIFE Today’s Gospel has the crowd asking Jesus three questions. First, “When did you get here,” to which Jesus responds by rebuking them for their failure to grasp his miracle as a “sign,” an occasion to put faith in him. Their second question about accomplishing the “works of God” has Jesus respond that faith is the “work” that God wishes. Many scholars believe this is John’s answer to the faith-works dichotomy emerging in the early Christian community. Faith is the work of God in the believer, John would have us understand. The third question asked by the crowd is a request for a “sign” that would allow them to put faith in Jesus, as the manna in the desert allowed the Israelites to put faith in the Lord God. Jesus answers by revealing himself as the “bread of life” that “comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week will see the summertime celebration of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The story of the Transfiguration is proclaimed twice each year; once on the Second Sunday of Lent, and then again on August 6. In Lent, the revelation of Jesus’ glory foreshadows the triumph of Easter. During the summer, this feast comes—significantly—forty days before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In the Gospel proclaimed on this day, Peter wants to know if he should build “three tents.” In Hebrew, the tents are sukkot, rickety harvest shacks also called in English “tabernacles” (from the Latin word for “little shelters”) that harvesters set up in fields so they can stay there to work day and night. Harvest booths are built and ornamented for the Jewish festival of Sukkot. One aspect of this festival is eager anticipation for the ingathering of all peoples (including ancestors Moses and Elijah) under God’s own sukkot shalom, the tent of peace. In some patristic traditions, the late summer and early autumn of the church year are imagined as an extended ingathering festival that begins today and reaches fulfillment at Epiphany. —Fray Gilberto CavazosGlz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

What does it mean to say a person is a Catechist?

The dictionary describes the word “Catechist” as “A teacher of the principles of Christian Religion”

Fr. John Francis Murphy, wrote:

A CATECHIST IS: An ordinary person who is extraordinary, because he or she teaches as Jesus did.

A sign of Christian hope in a world turned in on itself. An expression of the mission entrusted by Jesus to God’s People.

The “good news” in flesh and blood in today’s humanity. Proof that someone is still wise enough to care about all the most important things in life.

A catechist is faithful to the past, open to the future, but especially dedicated to deepening the faith of the present generation.

The Bible and the Church in human form. Saint Paul in modern disguise.

The gem who makes it possible for priests, sisters, and religious education coordinators to sleep a bit better at night. The backbone of the Mystical Body of Christ and the guarantee that the Bible will be printed tomorrow.

The person who makes Christ come alive to the child who never hears of Him at home. The busiest person in the parish, who somehow finds time to do those important things which everyone else is too

busy to do. Faith, hope and love attached to arms and legs, aches and pains, family duties and not enough time.

A person with no time for himself who finds enough time for other people’s children who need to hear about Jesus.

We were so blessed to have had the following people serving as Catechists and aides in our English catechism program here at Sacred Heart this past year:

Maria Alonzo Roseangel Carmona Dolores Lee Sylvia Alvarez Beija and Natalie Carmona Norma and Crystal Magdaleno Joanne Argueta Lucy Castro Jhina O’Brien Tabulina Claudia Arriola Vivian Castro Maria Ortiz Tami Beliunas Rudy Evergreen Jessica Padilla Silvia Capuyan Lilia Fanoe Jenny Perez Arnold Chavez Joy Galapon Rocio Rodríguez Krista Fuentes Jose and Rebecca Liciaga Belinda Valenzuela The Family Faith Formation program is in need of volunteers. Is God asking you to come forward? Please pray about it and listen to

what our Lord is asking of you!

To be a Catechist all that is needed is the willingness to help and learn, we train and provide support.

SACRED HEART ALTAR SOCIETY NEWS—The September meeting of the Sacred Heart Altar Society will be held on Tuesday, Sep-tember 4, 2012. New members are always welcome. We meet at the Parish Center, in the Sacred Heart Room, at 1 pm on the first Tuesday of the month. Hope to see you there!

HEARING AND DOING Today’s second reading urges, “Be doers of the word and not hearers on-ly” (James 1:22). Following Jesus is not easy. Sometimes we have “reasons” for not doing things—we’re too tired, too old, too sick, too needy, too busy with responsibilities. Yet some of the best “prayers” are the sick and disabled, the wisest listeners the elderly, and the most generous givers those who’ve endured poverty. Great organizers delegate and let other people shine. All of us are called to live generously and selflessly and the opportunities are end-less. Try to balance prayer, action, and financial giving. A busy mother cannot spend hours in prayer, a man working two jobs has limited time to volunteer, and a person on a tiny fixed income has little money to spare. However, the busy mother can start her day with a prayer, the hardworking man can help at a parish event, and the person with a limited income can put a steady few dol-lars in the collection. Everyone can be a “doer.” Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed donations for our recent “Christmas in July” food drive. Our pantry shelves are currently full and hopefully we will be able to serve the more than 200 people we are providing with emergency provisions each month until “Christmas in December!” (But remember, we welcome donations any time!) Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

When you come to Mass, please be sure to lock your cars and be careful to not leave valuables in plain sight. If you must leave valuable items in your car, place items out of sight before reaching the Church. Someone may be watching when you put items under a seat or throw something over them. If you can’t take them with you, at least lock the items in your glove com-partment or your trunk.
