El verano comienza con la celebración de las fiestas del Orgullo, que hacen de Madrid una ciudad aún más alegre, abierta y diversa. Más allá del barrio de Chueca este gran evento anual se dejará sentir por numerosas calles y plazas, a rebosar de actividades estos días. Unos días en los que disfrutaremos al aire libre con todas esas propuestas que nos llegan de la mano de Veranos de la Villa, con un programa que se prolonga hasta septiembre y que incluye conciertos, danza, circo y deportes urbanos en cada uno de los 21 distritos madrileños.

La música será protagonista durante el mes de julio, con varios festivales convertidos ya en imprescindibles. Continúa PHotoEspaña, con exposiciones fotográficas en salas y centros culturales, y también grandes muestras, como la que reúne a Velázquez, Rembrandt y Vermeer en el Museo del Prado, o la que nos recuerda el talento de Balenciaga en el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. Quienes prefieran el teatro, Madrid no baja el telón. ¡Feliz verano a todos!

Summer kicks off with the Pride Festival, which turns Madrid into an even more vibrant, open and diverse city. Beyond its main hub, the Chueca neighbourhood, this major annual event will make its mark in numerous streets and squares, which will be bustling with activities during the festival, when we’ll also be able to enjoy some outdoor fun with all of the offerings in the Veranos de la Villa programme. This year the annual festival has been extended until September, and it will feature concerts, dance, circus acts and urban sport in every one of Madrid’s 21 districts.

Music will play a leading role in the month of July, with several festivals that have established themselves as events not to be missed. PHotoEspaña will continue, with photo exhibitions in cultural centres and exhibition halls, and there will also be some impressive exhibitions, like the one at the Prado Museum that brings together works by Velázquez, Rembrandt and Vermeer, or the one at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum that reminds us of Balenciaga's talent. For those who prefer the theatre, Madrid won't be lowering the curtain this season. Have a great summer!

Durante los meses de julio y agosto Madrid acoge una de las citas más esperadas del calendario cultural: una nueva edición de su festival más participativo y veraniego, con un sinfín de actividades al aire libre en todos y cada uno de los distritos de la ciudad. ¡Que lo disfrutes!

In July and August Madrid will host one of the most eagerly-anticipated events in the city’s cultural calendar: a new edition of its most participative summer concert, featuring an endless range of outdoor activities in every one of the city’s districts. Dive right in!

MÚSICAEl primer concierto del mes de julio es un homenaje a las mujeres compositoras del Barroco. Tendrá lugar el 3 de julio (21:30 h) en el Centro Cultural Galileo y tendrá como protagonista a la soprano italiana Roberta Invernizzi, que ha con-vocado a un grupo de amigos para rendir tributo a creadoras como Isabella Leonar-da o Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. Tam-bién música clásica pero más actual es la propuesta de Kronos Quartet, de San Francisco, uno de los cuartetos de cuerda más valorados del mundo, que actuará el día 16 en el Auditorio Pilar García Peña, en Hortaleza (21:30 h). El día 30 será el turno del Cuarteto Quiroga, uno de los grupos más singulares de la nueva generación europea, que estará en el auditorio del parque El Paraíso, en San Blas-Canillejas (21:00 h). El 8 de agosto (21:00 h), junto al pórtico de entrada del Cementerio de la Almudena, Al Ayre Español nos ofrecerá una selección de zarzuelas y cantatas de finales del siglo XVII y principios del XVIII. También zarzuela, aunque mezclada con cabaré, sonará en el auditorio del Parque Forestal de Entrevías, en Puente de Valle-cas, los días 29 y 30 de agosto (21:00 h), de la mano de Rodrigo Cuevas.

Pero habrá otros sonidos muy diferentes en Veranos de la Villa. El 4 de julio (21:00 h) en la plaza de Colón Chancha Vía Circuito, Batuk, Deena, Abdelwahed DJ Set y Titi Calor nos propondrán una noche de Raíz Electrónica para bailar sin parar, algo que también podremos hacer el día 7 (22:00 h) en la Plaza Matadero, en Matadero Madrid, gracias a Lotic, Faka y DJ Harem, al frente de una velada de Electro-Queer, que coincide con las fies-

MUSICThe first concert in July will be a tribute to the female composers of the Baroque. Held on 3 July (9.30pm) in Galileo Cul-tural Centre, it will feature Italian soprano Roberta Invernizzi, who has gathered a group of friends to pay tribute to crea-tors like Isabella Leonarda and Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. Classical music –but this time, contemporary classical– will also be the focus of the concert that the Kronos Quartet from San Francisco, one of the world’s most acclaimed string quar-tets, will give on the 16th in Pilar García Peña Auditorium, in Hortaleza (9.30pm). The 30th will feature the Cuarteto Qui-roga, one of the new European genera-tion’s most singular quartets, which will perform in the auditorium in El Paraíso Park, in San Blas-Canillejas (9pm). But Veranos de la Villa will also offer some very different sounds. Quienes prefieran el rock no pueden perderse, el 17 de julio, Cuan-do el río suena… en los Jardines Bajos del Puente de Segovia, donde, a partir de las 20:30 h, actuarán Cheeto’s Magazine, Derby Motoreta’s Burrito Kachimba y Pony Bravo. Tampoco, la cita con la can-tautora norteamericana Joan as Police Woman, el 10 de agosto (21:00 h) en el Parque Juan Carlos I, y con la banda de Minesota Low, en la Quinta de Torre Arias el 27 de agosto (21:00 h).

Cuba será protagonista en De La Haba-na a Madrid, en el auditorio de la plaza de Ángel Francés (21:00), que contará con la actuación de la big band cuba-na Orquesta Akotán y de Cimafunk, con su funk afrocubano. Nadie como el ecléctico compositor y cantante Kevin Johansen ha sabido conjugar la música popular argentina y todos los ritmos lati-nos, algo que el público podrá compro-bar el 24 de julio (21:30 h) en el patio de Conde Duque. El 7 de agosto Tony Allen,

padre del afrobeat, y Jeff Mills, padre del tecno, dejarán toda su impronta en Plaza Matadero (21:00 h), por donde también pasará Les Filles de Illighadad, grupo musical de folk africano contemporáneo compuesto por mujeres nigerianas. El soul y el jazz llegarán con la melodiosa voz de la joven cantautora californiana Kadhja Bonet el 11 de agosto (21:00 h) en el auditorio del parque de Berlín.

Pero aún habrá más sorpresas musica-les, como la propuesta Algo inesperado, que ocurrirá el 14 de julio en la Quinta de los Molinos, donde un grupo madrileño, del que no se sabrá el nombre hasta los primeros compases, tocará a partir de las 21:30 h. El 20 de julio, con motivo del 50º aniversario de la llegada del hombre a la Luna, el auditorio del parque Enrique Tierno Galván acogerá una noche (21:30 h) astronómica, con la participación de científicos que explicarán el presente y futuro de la exploración espacial y de Xoel López, que dará un concierto en el que

Nobody mixes popular Argentine music with the full spec-trum of Latin rhythms as well as eclectic composer and singer Kevin Johansen, something that the audience will be able to attest to on 24 July (9.30pm) in the courtyard of Conde Duque Cultural Cen-tre. On 7 August, Tony Allen, one of the

founders of Afrobeat, and Jeff Mills, a founder of techno music, will make their mark in Plaza Matadero (9pm), where there will also be a show by Les Filles de Illighadad, a contemporary African folk band composed of Nigerian women. Soul and jazz will also have a place in the programme thanks to the melodious voice of young Californian singer-songwriter Kadhja Bonet, on 11 August (9pm) in the auditorium in Berlín Park.

But there are even more musical surprises in store, like the event Algo inesperado (Something Unexpected), which will take place on 14 July in Quinta de los Molinos, where a Madrid band whose name won’t be revealed until the first few beats will play at 9.30pm. On 20 July, for the 50th anniversary of mankind’s arrival on the moon, the auditorium in Enrique Tierno Galván Park will host an astronomy night (9.30pm). Scientists will explain the pre-sent and future of space exploration, and Xoel López will give a concert, singing

interpretará canciones propias y ajenas iluminadas por la luna o el ideal del viaje. Y, precisamente, un viaje musical es algo que podremos vivir en el Mercado Municipal de Las Ventas el 27 de julio (de 10:00 a 14:00 h), en el que el colectivo artístico Poderío Vital creará una canción a partir de los canturreos mañaneros de todos aquellos que en verano madrugan para ir a trabajar en autobús.

Más opciones musicales: las Peleas Villanas en la Huerta del Obispo de Villaverde (26 de julio, 21:00 h) y en el anfiteatro Marta Rodríguez-Tarduchy, en Fuencarral-El Pardo (28 de agosto, 21:00 h), que mezclan antropología y rap, Madrid Suena (3 de agosto, Centro Deportivo Municipal Cerro Almodóvar, de 11 a 20:30 h), programa con muy dife-rentes músicas, y Vivir en Videoclip. Tú, yo, nosotris y un karaoke, propuesta muy especial de Anto Rodríguez que no hay que perderse (9 de agosto, Auditorio de la plaza de Ermua en Usera, y día 21 en la plaza Daoiz y Velarde, en Retiro).

FLAMENCOEl flamenco también estará muy presente en esta edición de Veranos de la Villa. El 10 de julio, Arcángel acercará al Auditorio del Parque Lineal del Manzanares (21:30 h) su Abecedario flamenco. Para esta oca-sión el cantaor ofrecerá al público la posi-bilidad de que elija parte del repertorio. El día 19 el cantaor Israel Fernández, acompañado del guitarrista Diego del Morao, convertirá el Auditorio del parque de la Cuña Verde de O’Donnell, en Mora-talaz, en un auténtico tablao (21:00 h).

DANZA Y PERFORMANCENaves Matadero acoge del 12 al 14 de julio (21:00 h) Split Flow y Holistic Stra-ta, dos trabajos del coreógrafo y artista visual Hiroaki Umeda, una de las figuras más relevantes de la vanguardia escénica japonesa. Por el mismo escenario pasará Philippe Quesne, que estrena en Espa-ña, del 18 al 20 de julio (21:00 h) La nuit des taupes, una sorprendente obra en la que siete topos gigantes aparecen en un teatro tras cavar sus madrigueras. El 22 y 23 de agosto, el Pabellón de Cristal de la Casa de Campo cede su espacio para la puesta en escena de Imaginé cinco cuer-pos y ninguno era el mío, una creación con cinco bailarines que surge de la colabora-ción entre la coreógrafa Janet Novás y las diseñadoras de moda Zap&Buj (21:30 h).

CIRCOLa compañía Pistacatro llega aesta edición de Veranos de la Villa con una singular propuesta. El planteamiento de Orquesta de Malabares (12 de julio, Auditorio Pilar García Peña, 21:30 h) es trabajar con las orquestas y bandas sin-fónicas de las ciudades que visitan. En este caso, la Banda Sinfónica Municipal de Madrid. Una pieza de circo elegante y poética, muy sugerente. Así es Sodade, del Cirque Rouages, que hará las delicias de niños y mayores el 25 de julio en el parque Agustín Rodríguez Sahagún de Tetuán (21:30 h). El 25 de agosto será el turno de Cirque La Compagnie que trae hasta el auditorio Lourdes Guadalupe y Mariano Marchante, en el parque de la Cuña Verde de Vicálvaro, su espectáculo L’avis bidon (21:00 h).

And travelling, or rather, a musical journey, is precisely what we’ll be able to experience in Las Ventas Municipal Market on 27 July (10am to 2pm), where the artist collective Poderío Vital will create a song based on the morning humming of all of the people who get up early in the summer to travel to work on the bus.

Here are a few more music event sugges-tions: the Peleas Villanas, which blend anthropology with rap, in Huerta del Obispo Park in Villaverde (26 July, 9pm) and in the Marta Rodríguez-Tarduchy Amphitheatre in Fuencarral-El Pardo (28 August, 9pm); Madrid Suena (3 August, Cerro Almodóvar Municipal Sports Centre, 11am to 8.30pm), a programme featuring a diverse range of music; and Vivir en Videoclip. Tú, yo, nosotris y un karaoke, a very special sort of concert by Anto Rodríguez that you won’t want to miss (9 August in the auditorium in Plaza de Ermua, in Usera, and 21 August in Plaza Daoiz y Velarde, in Retiro).

FLAMENCOFlamenco will also feature heavily in this edition of Veranos de la Villa. On 10 July, Arcángel will perform his Abecedario fla-menco at the auditorium in the Linear Park of the Manzanares River (9.30pm). On this occasion, the flamenco singer will give the audience a chance to choose part of the set list. On the 19th, flamenco singer Israel Fernández, accompanied by guitarist Diego del Morao, will turn the auditorium in Cuña Verde de O’Donnell Park, in Mor-atalaz, into a veritable flamenco club (9pm).

DANCE AND PERFORMANCE ARTFrom 12 to 14 July (9pm), Naves Matadero will offer Split Flow and Holistic Strata, two pieces by choreographer and visual artist Hiroaki Umeda, one of the key fig-ures on Japan’s avant-garde performing arts scene. From 18 to 20 July (9pm), the same venue will welcome Philippe Quesne, with the Spanish premiere of La nuit des taupes, a surprising piece in which seven gigantic moles end up in a theatre when digging their burrows. On 22 and 23 August, the Glass Pavilion in Casa de Campo Park will host the produc-tion Imaginé cinco cuerpos y ninguno era el mío, a creation featuring five dancers which is the product of a collaboration between choreographer Janet Novás and fashion designers Zap&Buj (9.30pm).

CIRCUSThe Pistacatro troupe will also take part in Veranos de la Villa, offering a unique show, Orquesta de Malabares (12 July, Pilar García Peña Auditorium, 9.30pm), in which the troupe pairs up with symphony bands and orchestras in the cities it vis-its. On this occasion, its partner is the Madrid Municipal Symphonic Band (BSMM). An elegant, poetic and very intriguing circus act. That’s what you’ll get at Sodade, by Cirque Rouages, which will delight children and adults alike on 25 July in Agustín Rodríguez Sahagún Park, in Tetuán (9.30pm). On 25 August, Cirque La Compagnie will take up the baton, performing its show L’avis bidon (9pm) in Lourdes Guadalupe y Mariano Marchante Auditorium in Cuña Verde Park, in Vicálvaro.

Y ADEMÁS…Habrá también en Veranos de la Villa tiempo para los deportes urbanos, con la ya habitual Block Party en el Skate Park de Madrid Río (5 de julio. 20:00 h), amenizada por el grupo de rap canario Locoplaya, y exhibiciones de calistenia y street workout (2 de agosto, El Hoyo de Moratalaz, 20:00 h). También desfiles de moda, juegos para los más pequeños, cine, una verbena animal… ¡y mucha fiesta! El 24 de agosto en la explanada de la calle Bailén, frente al Palacio Real, la mítica Alcatraz “La Orquesta” hará que nos movamos sin parar con su amplio despliegue de estilos, desde el pasodoble a la salsa. El 1 de septiembre el festival estival llega a su fin con el espectácu-lo que la coreógrafa Cuqui Jerez y el maestro pirotécnico José Luis Jiménez han diseñado como gran colofón (parque Enrique Tierno Galván, 21:00 h). Un baile de luces en el cielo de Madrid con el que esperar al próximo verano.

AND THERE’S MORE…Veranos de la Villa will also make room for urban sports, with the Block Party –now a regular fixture– in the Skate Park in Madrid Río Park (5 July, 8pm), which will be livened up by Canarian rap band Locoplaya, and with callisthenics and street workout demonstrations (2 August, El Hoyo de Moratalaz, 8pm). There will also be fashion shows, games for children, film, an outdoor Animal Party… and a whole lot of fun! Get ready for a night of non-stop dancing on 24 August in the fore-court opposite the Royal Palace in Calle Bailén, where legendary dance orchestra Alcatraz “La Orquesta” will give us a taste of its vast repertoire of styles, from pasodoble to salsa. On 1 September the summer festival will wind to a close with a show designed by choreographer Cuqui Jerez and fireworks expert José Luis Jiménez as the event’s grand finale (Enrique Tierno Galván Park, 9pm). As the lights dance in Madrid’s sky, the wait for the arrival of next summer will begin.

Comienza el verano y las banderas arcoíris desplegadas por cada rincón nos recuer-dan que las celebraciones del colectivo LGTBI están ya en marcha, todo un ejem-plo de lo que es esta ciudad, abierta, cos-mopolita y diversa. Este año las fiestas empiezan con actividades especiales que recuerdan que en este 2019 se cumplen 50 años de los disturbios de Stonewall, en Estados Unidos, que dieron paso a la pri-mera gran protesta por la reivindicación del colectivo y a importantes manifestaciones en Nueva York.

Con este aniversario en mente, la progra-mación se inicia el día 1, con una nueva edición de Madrid SUMMIT en la Casa de América, en la que se debatirán temas sobre los derechos LGTBI. El miércoles día 3 toda la atención recaerá en la plaza de Pedro Zerolo, en el barrio de Chueca, uno de los principales escenarios de las fiestas, donde tendrá lugar el pregón, a cargo de la cantante Mónica Naranjo. Será este el gran pistoletazo de salida de este Orgullo, cuyo siguiente gran evento será la divertida carrera de tacones del día 4 en la calle Pelayo. El viernes día 5 el escenario de la Puerta del Sol servirá para elegir al ganador del certamen Mr. Gay Pride España. Más de 20.000 personas acudirán a esta gala, que celebra ya su décimo segunda edición.

El momento más esperado es siempre la manifestación del Orgullo, la Gay Parade del sábado 6, con salida en Atocha (17:30 h) y final en la plaza de Colón, donde estará situado otro de los escenarios instalados por toda la ciudad. Las carrozas, con su música y espectáculos, transmitirán el mejor ambiente en la calle, en la que está 12

As summer gets off to a start, the rain-bow flags flying in every corner of the city remind us that the LGBTI community’s Pride celebrations are already underway, embodying the open, diverse and cosmo-politan nature of the city. 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in the USA, and this year the festival will open with special activities to commemorate the riots, which led to the community’s first major social protest and important demonstrations in New York.

With this anniversary in mind, the pro-gramme will begin on the 1st with a new edition of Madrid SUMMIT in Casa de América, where a debate on LGBTI rights will be held. On Wednesday the 3rd, the focus will be on Plaza de Pedro Zerolo in the Chueca neighbourhood, one of the festival’s main hubs, where the opening speech will be given by singer Mónica Naranjo. After the speech, which will kick off this year’s Pride festival, the next big event will be the high-heeled race on the 4th in Calle Pelayo. On Friday the 5th, the winner of Mr. Gay Pride España will be chosen on the stage in Puerta del Sol. Over 20,000 people will attend the event, now in its 12th edition.

The most eagerly-awaited moment is always the Gay Pride Parade, which will be held on Saturday the 6th. It will depart from Atocha (5.30pm) and finish in Plaza de Colón, which will feature another of the stages that will be set up all over the city. The floats, each with their own music and shows, will liven up the streets with a fantastic atmosphere. The partying is expected to go on until midnight. Mad Cool inaugura esta edición con una espectacular Welcome Party el día 10 por la que pasarán, entre otros, Bring Me The Horizon, The Cat Empire, Anier, y la artista más esperada, Rosalía. Third edition of this eclectic, fun and danceable festival. This year will feature 16 participating artists, performing on either of the two stages. The first act, on the 4th, will be Puerto Rican trap, rap and hip-hop artist and composer Bad Bunny. “Severed heads” punctured with spikes are a phenomenon of the Iron Age, more spe-cifically, of Iberian culture in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. Treated and then displayed in public, the heads of vanquished enemies were exhibited as trophies.

Giuseppe Verdi wrote this opera, to be performed at Teatro Real for the first time, when he was a young and ambitious composer, but it already shows flashes of the genius he would come to be. Plácido Domingo will return to Madrid to lead a cast rounded out by Mi-chael Fabiano, Carmen Giannattasio, Moisés Marín and Simón Orfila, in a concert version of the opera directed by conductor James Conlon.

Las carreras de caballos del Hipódromo de la Zarzue-la cambian su horario habitual durante la temporada de verano.
