PARISH NEWS

My Dear Parishioners and Friends, Let me rejoice in welcoming Father Thomas Caswell who joins us again and will be with us until July 5th. Fr. Caswell is an old friend and a good friend. While he is here I am slipping away, tomorrow the 25th, to attend a meeting of the Association of United States Catholic Priests, held in Albuquerque, NM. On my way back I will be stopping in Ann Arbor, MI to witness the Marriage of a former parishioner. I return on the morning of July 1. I am still deeply saddened by the separation of families that has taken place at our Southern Border. I am considering a Second Collection next weekend for Catholic Charities to assist them in their efforts to help those affected by this. I would like to thank one of our parishioners, Katie, for sending along some helpful information about a local effort to help the 239 separated children being housed here just over in East Harlem. It is an effort organized by City Council Member Mark Levine to donate clothing and supplies to these 239. Please take a look at the following: https://www.westsiderag.com/2018/06/21/council-member-levine-taking-donations-for-immigrant-children-who-are-being-held-in-nyc. What is the Christian response to what we are witnessing at the Border? How can we, as those who believe in the value and sanctity of the family and of those who come from afar, bear witness and assist? It’s a week rich in Liturgy, for this week we celebrate the feasts of some of the great Doctors of the Church as well as the two founders of the Church. St. Cyril of Alexandria (376-444) presided over the First Council of Ephesus, which declared Mary to be the Mother of God. Cyril defended our Lady’s place in God’s plan of salvation, and wrote about the Incarnation and the dignity of the human person. St. Irenaeus, who died in 202, was Bishop of Lyons, and faced one of the most widespread of all Christian heresies, Gnosticism. This erroneous doctrine taught that the flesh was evil and that only a select few had access to the salvific truths of the faith. Irenaeus pointed to the Incarnation and Resurrection to show forth the goodness of creation, and pointed to Apostolic Succession in the Church as the means by which saving truth is communicated to all and not simply the few.

St. Peter, as we know, is hailed as the Rock upon which Jesus builds the community of believers. He is a visible sign of God’s presence remaining with those who believe, and the source of their unity. St. Paul, too, is hailed as a unique founder of the Church because he truly was converted by the Lord and became the Apostle to the Gentiles through his missionary journeys. Both were martyred around the year 64 by the Roman Emperor Nero after the great fire of Rome. As a Roman citizen, Paul would not face the torture of crucifixion, but was beheaded. Peter, tradition holds, was crucified upside down, and when, in the 20th Century, his bones were discovered underneath the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, the feet were missing from his tomb, which corroborates this tradition. As always, let us continue to pray for peace. Father Duffell

WE SHARE CAMPAIGN RESULTS THANK YOU TO THE 67 PARISHIONERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN OUR WE SHARE CAMPAIGN IN MAY. Of the 67, 35 are new enrollees and 32 increased their giving. As you recall, an anonymous group of parishioners committed to donate $10,000 if 150 parishioners enrolled or increased their We Share donations. At almost 45% of our goal, the anonymous donors decided to donate $5000 to Blessed Sacrament. We are grateful for their generosity.

Padre Duffell

My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the God of my heart is great, And my spirit sings of the wondrous things that you bring to the ones who wait. You fixed your sight on your servant's plight, and my weakness you did not spurn, So from east to west shall my name be blest. Could the world be about to turn?

Though I am small, my God, my all, you work great things in me, And your mercy will last from the depths of the past to the end of the age to be. Your very name puts the proud to shame, and to those who would for you yearn, You will show your might, put the strong to flight, for the world is about to turn.

From the halls of power to the fortress tower, not a stone will be left on stone. Let the king beware for your justice tears ev'ry tyrant from his throne. The hungry poor shall weep no more, for the food they can never earn; There are tables spread, ev'ry mouth be fed, for the world is about to turn.

Though the nations rage from age to age, we remember who holds us fast: God's mercy must deliver us from the conqueror's crushing grasp. This saving word that out forebears heard is the promise which holds us bound, 'Til the spear and rod can be crushed by God, who is turning the world around.
