Memorial Requiem Mass for the Repose of the Soul of Fr. John B. Peng

Many of you heard me announce that Fr. John Peng died on June 11 and was buried in China. Unfortunately, we did not receive notice of Fr. Peng’s death and burial until about a month after the fact.

Fr. Peng was a great friend to the Traditional Latin Mass community in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Father was also a confessor to many of us local Catholics as he generously administered the Sacrament of Penance at several parishes throughout the Archdiocese.

Fr. Peng was a courageous priest, ministering here in the Chicago area and in Sichuan, China. Even in his eighties, Fr. Peng was energetically travelling back and forth between the U.S. and China without missing a beat; sacerdos in aeternum.

Because Fr. Peng was known by so many faithful Catholics who benefitted from his priestly service, and because we were not able to attend his funeral, I will offer a Tridentine Requiem Mass for the repose of Fr. John Ping’s soul and the reward of his good works on this coming WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4TH AT 6:30 P.M. This is the evening of our regular Holy Souls in Purgatory devotions, but let us use our time together this Wednesday to pray the Holy Mass for Fr. Peng.

Rev. John B. Peng, former chaplain of St. Elizabeth Hospital, passed away Friday, June 11, 2021 in China, at the age of 94. Fr. Peng’s services were held in Sichuan, China, which included his lying in state for two weeks followed by a well-attended funeral Mass. Fr. Peng was entombed among other priests and bishops.

Fr. Peng was born on March 6, 1927 in China where he attended seminary

and was ordained on Feb. 21, 1955. After ordination to the priesthood, Fr. Peng served in Taiwan until 1960 and for a short term in Malaysia. He moved to Chicago and was incardinated in the archdiocese on Jan. 13, 1989.

Fr. Peng served in the Archdiocese of Chicago at St. John Nepomucene Parish on Lowe Avenue and as chaplain at St. Elizabeth Hospital until he retired in 1994. After his retirement, Fr. Peng served in missionary work in Sichuan, China.

El Rev. John B. Peng, ex capellán del Hospital St. Elizabeth, falleció el viernes

PRE-K Miss Sue Como Susan Como considers teaching at St. Odilo School a privilege because of the young lives she is able to touch. “I love being with four and five year-olds because they make such significant strides at this age. It is utterly amazing watching these small children attain their learning goals with such happiness.” Much of that happiness stems from hands-on learning through play. Academic goals are achieved through poetry, songs, dance, games, art and books. Preschoolers even get a glimpse of science as they watch butterflies emerge from their chrysalis. Parents often tell Ms. Como that their children want to come to school on Saturday and Sunday, as well as on weekdays.
