Tenacidad y creatividad, dos virtudes que Valparaíso y sus habitantes han desarrollado a fuerza de hacer ciudad y vida en una geografía difícil y en tiempos muchas veces adversos.
Ese temperamento urbano, que mira al mar cuando está en calma pero también cuando el viento entra a la bahía y el Pacíf ico se vuelve su opuesto, nunca dejará de estar abierto al mundo con todas las sorpresas, paradojas y desafíos que despiertan los que llegan y los que se van. Es lo que ten.haz quiere celebrar poniendo a disposición las propuestas creativas de un mismo y nuevo comercio local, que ve en la cultura, la creatividad y la tenacidad las claves para un desarrollo sustentable, a la escala, alucinante y compleja, de Valparaíso.
This urban temperament that looks to the sea when is calm but also when the wind gets into the bay and the Pacific becomes its opposite, that will never stop being open to the world with all the surprises, paradoxes and challenges opened by those arriving and those leaving; that is what ten.haz wants to celebrate disposing the innovative proposals of a same and new local trade, which sees in culture, creativity and tenacity the keys for a sustainable development according to the hallucinative and complex scale of Valparaíso.
Tenacity and creativity, two virtues that Valparaíso and its inhabitants have developed by dint of making city and life in the middle of a hard geography and, in many ocassions, adverse times.

Luego que Valparaíso fuera saquedo por el pirata Francis Drake en 1578, incluida su Iglesia, Felipe II decide reparar a su población enviando la mejor obra de sus artesanos: una ef igie de cristo tallada en madera. El artesano elegido es un japonés que ha llegado a España buscando reconocimiento. Sin embargo, el Rey sólo le encarga f iguras iguales y monótonas de un hombre que según le cuentan es un dios en tres dioses. Al f in termina su obra, que no tiene detalles f inos ni adornos cincelados, pero contiene la purif icación. Golpe a golpe ha entendido la historia de Cristo y él mismo se ha hecho creyente. Luego de un año de espera El Cristo de La Matriz arriba a Valparaíso.

Christ and the Japanese
After Valparaíso was robbed in 1578 by pirate Francis Drake, including its church, Philip II decides to retrieve the population sending the best work of his ar tisans: an eff igy of Jesus Christ made of wood. The chosen ar tisan is a Japanese that came to Spain looking for recognition; however, the king only entrusts him identical and monotonous f igures of a man that he was told is a god in three gods. At last he f inishes his work, which has no fancy details or chiselled ornaments, but contains purif ication. Hit by hit he has understood the story of Christ and now he is a believer. After a year wait, the Jesus Christ image of La Matriz arrives to Valparaíso.

Desde 1880 y hasta principios del siglo XX el comercio de las grandes f irmas inglesas, alemanas o norteamericanas tuvo su época dorada en Valparaíso. La ciudad era la capital económica del país y el puerto más importante en la costa oeste de América gracias al salitre. Sin embargo, otro comercio, el de las ferias y vendedores callejeros también tiene larga data en el puerto. Ya en la primera mitad del XIX Valparaíso tiene tres mercados: La recova del Puerto, la recova de la Victoria y la del Cardonal. Hoy, un nuevo comercio, basado en la creatividad y el arte, está construyendo su propia historia en el puerto, una historia que será parte del futuro de esta ciudad.

Trading of a few, a lot, and all peopleSince 1880 and until the beginning of the XX Century, trading of big English, German and North American companies had its golden age in Valparaíso. The city was the capital of the economy in the country and the most impor tant por t in the American West coast due to niter industry. But fairs and street vendors have also a long tradition in the por t city. In the early XIX Century Valparaíso had three markets: Puer to, Victoria and Cardonal. Nowadays, not only goods and stock are traded in Valparaíso. A new trading based on creativity and ar t is setting its own history, a history that will be par t of the future of this city.

During March puppets take Valparaíso. The puppeteers come from different parts of Chile and the world to spread the magic and originality of their dolls; miniatures, smalls and giants to all family.

Valparaíso y El Rock
El rock comenzó a escucharse por primera vez en Valparaíso en los burdeles del barrio chino (alrededores de la Plaza Echaurren), donde era al mismo tiempo disfrutado y utilizado para atraer a los marineros extranjeros. También por este puerto arribaron los primeros discos de 45 rpm, Wurlitzers y discos compilatorios. Muchos de estos productos eran de contrabando, como también los instrumentos, amplif icadores y tocadiscos, los cuales se negociaban de manera secreta en el puerto con los músicos interesados.

Rock began to be heard in the city in brothels at China town (surroundings of Echaurren Square), where it was enjoyed and used to atract foreign sailors.The f irst 45 rpm records, Wurlitzers and compilation albums arrived to this por t city. Many of these products were smuggled, as also instruments, amplif iers and record players; which were traded secretly in the por t with the interested musicians.

Teatro Mauri was officialy opened on 12/28/1951and it was a movie theater until 1971. Its inside was rebuilt in 1995, in 2001 the theater and cafeteria were opened, in 2003 the Cultural Center was created and in 2007 the movie theater was equipped.
It was officially opened in 1931. With obvious Art Decó features, its imposing facade has a refined style and a large inner space; it has 2.000 seats divided in theater boxes, front seats, balconies, and galleries.
A space dedicated to the magical world of puppets and clowns, with puppet handling exhibitions, photographies and stories about the clown’s world. Theatrical plays every weekend.
Teatro Mauri fue inaugurado el 28/12/1951 y fue cine hasta 1971. Se reconstruyó su interior desde 1995, el año 2001 abrió su sala de teatro y cafetería, el año 2003 se crea el Centro Cultural, el año 2007 se equipo el cine.
Inaugurado en 1931. De líneas marcadamente Art Decó, su imponente fachada es de un ref inado estilo y su espacio interior amplio; alberga a 2.000 espectadores en palcos y plateas, anf iteatros y galerías.
Espacio dedicado al mágico mundo del títere y el payaso, con exposiciones de manipulación de marionetas, fotografías e historias del mundo del payaso. Obras de teatro todos los f ines de semana.

Entre 1840 y 1870 se establecieron las bases de la industria imprensora en Chile y Valparaíso albergó buena parte de las primeras imprentas, al punto que en 1875 según un censo de la época este puerto concentraba 210 tipógrafos, es decir, un tercio de los tipógrafos del país. La mayoría de los periódicos de la época tenían sus propias imprentas y tuvieron un rol importante en la producción y difusión de libros. El Mercurio de Valparaíso, por ejemplo, un diario liberal en aquella época, comenzó a publicar folletines románticos y pequeños libros como gancho para aumentar la circulación de su periódico.

Antigüedades
Un pasado esplendoroso como puerto comercial, pero también su declive, e incluso los temblores que de tanto en tanto mueven aún más la vida de Valparaíso, son los ingredientes que han permitido desarrollar un sorprendente mercado de antiguedades en la ciudad. Los sábados y domingos la Feria de Antiguedades de La Merced, en la plaza O’Higgins, regala un placentero espectáculo de toda clase de objetos de valor que en su factura, uso y viajes, contienen de cierta manera el karma de una época que se ha ido y simultáneamente perdura en la ciudad. En las calles Uruguay e Independencia, y en los alrededores de la Plaza O’ Higgins se pueden encontrar las tiendas, que constituyen otra nutrida oferta de objetos de época. Mención especial requiere la Feria de Las Pulgas de Av. Argentina, mercadillo callejero que funciona los domingos, donde podrá encontrar variedad de artículos usados a precios baratísimos.

Every Saturday and Sunday the antiques market La Merced, located at the O’Higgins Square, gives a marvelous spectacle of all kinds of valuable objects that in their fabrication, use and travels have, in a way, all karma of a period that has gone but at the same time it still last in the city.In Uruguay and Independencia streets, and the surroundings of O’Higgins Square it is possible to f ind shops that are part of the great offer of vintage objects.A special mention desreves the f lea market at Argentina Avenue, a street market opened every Sunday and where is possible to f ind a variety of secondhand objects at very good prices.
