Fr. Joe’s Journal El Diario del Padre Joe This weekend we celebrate the feast of St. Ignatius. We have had a special celebration of our patron, St. Ignatius. We have honored our patron and celebrated our parish that bears his name. We cele-brate our diverse parish that shares one faith in Jesus Christ and his church. Our parish was staffed for more than 90 years by the order St. Ignatius founded, the Society of Jesus. Both of our diocesan pastors received part of our education at Loyola, our neighboring university. Members of the Society still assist us with mass. We need to hear the word of God and to live it. Our parish unites the diversity of our cultures and personalities in one prayer and many actions to serve the message of Jesus. We also share in this celebration the Joy that comes from fol-lowing the Lord. Let us rejoice in the gift that our patron and our parish continues to give us. We all need to focus on what is important. Scripture reminds us we can easily be distracted in our relationship to God. We as a parish and as indi-viduals must make God most important in our lives. News about the sound system: Dr. DuSell has explored the options to improve our sound sys-tem This system has parts that need to be upgraded or replaced.. We decided the work needed to be done and we have a temporary solution this weekend and a more permanent one soon. I ask you to pray for our city, state, nation and the world. We as a community face many different challenges. We need to turn to God for his assistance and guidance. Each of us needs to work to lessen the hatreds that lead to violence. We will continue our formation series on August 17. I thank Deacon Rossow for leading this series of presentations . Thank you to those who supported the blood drive. We pray for the new president of Loyola University. We pray for Dr. Jo Ann Rooney as she begins her time as president of our neighbor, Loyola University. May God bless her and Loyola. We offer prayers for the summer. We pray for those who are ill, recovering from surgery, shut-in or are in nursing homes.. See this bulletin for other key articles.

Este fin de semana celebramos la fiesta de San Ignacio. Tuvimos una celebración especial en honor a nuestro patrono, San Ignacio. Hemos honrado nuestro patrono y celebramos nuestra parroquia que lleva su nombre. Celebramos nuestra diversidad parroquial que comparte una fe en Jesucristo y su Iglesia. Nuestra parro-quia fue dirigida por más de 90 años por la orden que San Ignacio fundó, la Sociedad de Jesús. Ambos párrocos dio-cesanos recibieron parte de su educación en Loyola, nues-tra universidad vecina. Miembros de la Sociedad todavía nos ayudan con misas. Necesitamos escuchar la palabra de Dios y vivirla. Nuestra parroquia une la diversidad de nuestras culturas y personalidades en una oración y mu-chas acciones para servir el mensaje de Jesús. También compartimos en esta celebración la alegría que proviene de seguir al Señor. Alegrémonos en el don que nuestro patrono y nuestra parroquia continúan dándonos. Todos necesitamos concentrarnos en lo que es importante. La Escritura nos recuerda que pode-mos distraernos fácilmente en nuestra relación con Dios. Como parroquia y como individuos debemos poner a Dios como lo más importante en nuestras vidas. Noticias sobre nuestro sistema de sonido. El Dr. DuSell ha explorado opciones para mejorar el sistema de sonido. Este sistema necesita partes que deben ser cambiadas. Hemos decidido que arreglos deben ser hechos y tenemos una temporaria solución en este fin de semana y una solución más permanente pronto. Les pido que recen por nuestra ciudad, es-tado, nación y el mundo. Como comunidad en-frentamos muchos desafíos diferentes. Necesitamos vol-ver Dios por su ayuda y guía. Todos necesitamos buscar disminuir el odio que lleva a la violencia. Continuaremos nuestra series educativa el 17 de agosto. Agradezco al Diacono Rossow por diri-gir esta serie de presentaciones. Happy Feast Day to Us!

This weekend we celebrate the feast day of our patron, St. Ignatius of Loyola. After being wounded in battle he turned to God and his journey began. Along the way he found brothers that were searching just like him. Together they sought God and answered His call to serve others. Today, we know his followers as members of the Society of Je-sus.

Let us take up our own journey and ask see what God has in store for us. Let us ask what God wants from us. Let us seek so that we may find God in our midst. During this Year of Mercy let use the works of mercy to live our faith. Let us take to heart the motto of St. Ignatius “For the greater glory of God.”

Este fin de semana celebramos la fiesta de nuestro patrono, San Ignacio de Loyola. Luego de ser herido en una batalla se volvió a Dios y su cami-no comenzó. En ese camino, encontró hermanos que también estaban en la búsqueda como él. Junto bus-caron a Dios y respondieron a Su llamado a servir a otros. Hoy conocemos a sus seguidores como la So-ciedad de Jesús.

Caminemos nuestra propio camino y busque-mos lo que Dios nos tiene preparados. Preguntémo-nos lo que Dios quiere de nosotros. Busquemos y encontremos a Dios en medio de nosotros. Durante el año de la Misericordia utilicemos las obras de mise-ricordia para vivir nuestra fe. Grabemos en nuestro corazón el lema de San Ignacio “Para mayor gloria de Dios.”

The Daily Examen

St. Ignatius recommended to do a Daily Examen to reflect in our day and be able to de-tect God’s presence in the present and see what path He wants us to follow in the future. These are the steps to do in prayer according to St. Ignatius:

1. Become aware of God’s presence. 2. Review the day with gratitude. 3. Pay attention to your emotions. 4. Choose one feature of the day and pray about it. 5. Look toward tomorrow.

Examen Diario de Conciencia

San Ignacio recomendaba hacer un Exa-men Diario para reflexionar sobre nuestro día y poder reconocer la presencia de Dios en el pre-sente y ver hacia donde El quiere que vayamos en el futuro. Estas son los pasos para hacer en oración según San Ignacio. :

Virtues and Vices On Wednesday, August 13 the next presentation in the Summer Adult Faith Formation Series will consider aspects of Catholic moral teaching. Focus of attention will be on the origins of Catholic thinking about the world and humanity. Also to be considered is the effort to be virtuous while avoiding vices that impede pro-gress to improvement. The program will be from 7 pm to 8:30 pm in the Holy Name Room. Facilitator for the evening will be Deacon Dr. Lawrence F. Rossow former Professor of Ethics. Refreshments will be served.

Very Brief Biography

St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491—1556)

Ignatius was born in northern Spain, the youngest of 13 children. He became

a soldier and dreamed of heroic ac-tions. He was wounded in battle and had to spend some time recovering at his brother’s house. During that time, he had only access to “Lives of Saints” and other pi-ous books. Reading those books, he start thinking in becoming a “knight for Christ” and decide to devote

his life to God. He spend some time in prayer and pilgrimage. Later, St. Ignatius studied at the Univer-sity of Paris, he and a group of friends start envision-

ing founding a “army” for Christ. This “army”, would later be call the “Society of Jesus” or the Jesu-its. The Society of Jesus was formally approved by Pope Paul III in 1540. St.

Ignatius died in Rome on July 31,1556. You can see his life pictured in the lunettes in the church ceiling.

San Ignacio de Loyola (1491—1556)

Ignacio nació en el norte de España, el menos de 13 hermanos. Fue un

soldado y soñaba con ser un caballe-ro. Fue herido durante una batalla y tuvo que pasar un tiempo recuperán-dose en la casa de su hermano. Du-

rante este tiempo, sólo tuvo la posibilidad de leer “La vida de los Santos” y otros libros religiosos. Leyendo

estos libros, él comenzó a pensar en ser un “Caballero por Cristo” y decidió dedicar su vida a Dios. Pasó un tiempo en oración y peregrinando.

Más tarde, San Ignacio estudio en la Universidad de Paris, él y un grupo de amigos comenzó a pensar en

crear un “ejercito” para Cristo, luego llamada la “Sociedad de Jesús” o los Jesuitas. La

Sociedad de Jesús fue aprobada formal-mente por el Papa Pablo III en 1540. San Ignacio Murió en Roma el 31 de julio, 1556. Puede ver su vida pintada en las lunetas en el techo de la iglesia.

HITTING IT BIG It seems to be commonly accepted nowadays that everyone wants to win the lottery, hit the slots big at the casino, or be a millionaire. This attitude is akin to what the first hearers of the parable of the successful farmer would have thought: Why, of course he’d want to find a way to preserve his good fortune for the future, to secure for himself a life of leisure, eating, drinking, and merriment. It’s ex-actly the kind of life that the right ticket, hand of cards, or quiz show answer might bring us today. Being surrounded by this “common wisdom” makes the words of Qoheleth, the psalmist, Paul, and Jesus all that much harder to hear today. Per-haps good fortune will be ours, perhaps it will not be. But if we make that fortune or the quest for it the heart, the very center, of our lives, then we will live to regret it. Parece cosa comúnmente aceptada hoy día que todo el mundo quiere ganarse la lotería, ganar en el casino o ser millonario. Esta actitud es similar a la de los primeros oyentes de la parábola del agricul-tor próspero que pensarían: Por supuesto. Él tenía que buscar la manera de preservar su buena fortuna para el futuro, para asegurarse una vida muelle, comiendo, bebiendo y gozando. Es exactamente la clase de vida que nos brindaría hoy el billete pre-miado, una buena mano de cartas o la respuesta correcta en el programa de TV. Estar rodeados por este “sentido común” hace mucho más difícil escu-char hoy las palabras de Cohélet, del salmista, de Pedro y de Jesús. Quizás nos sonría la buena fortu-na, quizás no. Pero si hacemos que esa fortuna o su búsqueda sea el corazón, el centro mismo de nues-tra vida, viviremos para lamentarlo.
