Dear Bookseller,The Great Birthday Bird of Katroo is ready to celebrate—are you? On March 2, please join us for the nation’s largest annual reading celebration to honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday!

Dr. Seuss spent his life making learning to read fun, while inspiring kids to use their imagination when experiencing the world around them. This event kit provides activities to help celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday with some of his most beloved stories and characters.

As you celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday, encourage your guests to enter Dr. Seuss’s Word Challenge in honor of his lifelong goal to make learning to read fun! Readers are encouraged to join the challenge on DrSeussChallenge.com. Readers can also enter for a chance to win super-dee-dooper prizes, including individual prizes as well as a grand prize for their school or library.

This challenge will help increase reading comprehension among young people in our communities and bring everyone together to help celebrate Dr. Seuss— all while having zany good fun!

Tips and tricks for celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday!

STEP 1: Pick a Time and Place• Dr. Seuss’s birthday is March 2, so pick a date

around then that works best for your community. Be sure to schedule enough time for all your planned activities!

• If you are involving your whole community, pick a location that suits your celebration. Chances are your bookstore or local library has a big open space for read-alouds, activities, snacks, and more.

STEP 2: Get the Word Out• Send an email blast to your newsletter subscribers

and get in touch with your local newspaper to have your celebration included in the calendar of the community events.

• Post flyers in your store and around your community.

STEP 3: Decorate and Prepare• Create a window or shelf display using some

of Dr. Seuss’s most beloved stories, such as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Dr. Seuss’s ABC, and more.

• Be sure to set out your shelftalker (included in this kit) so everyone who visits your store will know about Dr. Seuss’s birthday!

• Order or make some Seussian snacks. Visit Seussville.com/parents for ideas.

STEP 4: Celebrate Dr. Seuss!• A Dr. Seuss party would not be complete without

storytime. Have your guests vote on which Dr. Seuss book you should all read together.

• Hand out the hats included in this kit, and have your guests decorate them and wear throughout the event!

• Use the activities in this brochure. – Important note: some activities require you to

make copies for participation.

• Pass out the Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Bingo cards and sticker sheets included in this kit.

– Encourage your guests to take these home and mark each Dr. Seuss book with a sticker once they have read it.

– Suggestion: have guests bring these bingo cards back into the store once they are completed for a special prize.

• Ideas for prizes include: a small gift certificate, a gift pack from local retailers, or a bundle of Dr. Seuss books.
