Octubre, mes de la salud October, health month

Hace 14 años, este importante esfuerzo incluía solamente a

Estados Unidos y México, y tenía una duración de una semana.

Actualmente, además de Canadá,

varios países latinoamericanos se han integrado a la Semana Binacional de Salud y las

actividades se extienden a todo el

mes de octubre.

Fourteen years ago, this important effort included only the United States and

Mexico, and its duration was just one week. Currently, besides Canada, several Latinamerican countries participate in Binational Health Week and there are

activities all month long.

Health is movement

La Semana Binacional de Salud (SBS) es una gran movilización

comunitaria que tiene como meta lograr la salud y el bienestar de

la población migrante de origen latinoamericano que vive en los

Estados Unidos y Canadá. Durante la SBS diversas instituciones

de gobierno, organizaciones comunitarias y miles de voluntarios

se reúnen anualmente en el mes de octubre para realizar una

serie de actividades de promoción y educación en material de

salud, incluyendo talleres, canalización a servicios de salud y

programas de seguro medico, jornadas de vacunación y

exámenes medicos básicos.

Binational Health Week (BHW) is a large mobilization to improve the

health and well being of the underserved Latino population living in the

United States and Canada. During BHW government agencies,

community based organizations and thousands of volunteers come

together in October of each year to conduct a series of health promotion

and education activities including workshops, insurance referrals,

vaccinations and basic medical screenings.

Clínica de fútbol Soccer clinic

La actividad física y la salud

La Semana Binacional de Salud 2014 dio inicio

formalmente el 5 de octubre, en Walter E. Hall Park,

en la ciudad de Everett, con una clínica de fútbol en la

que participaron cerca de 100 niños y sus familias.

Adicionalmente se proporcionaron pruebas gratuitas de

glucosa, colesterol y presión arterial, vacunas contra la

influenza e información sobre acceso a servicios de

salud.

Physical activity and health Binational Health Week’s kickoff event was a soccer clinic

on October 5, at Walter E. Hall Park, in Everett, in which

close to 100 children and their families participated.

Additionally, the following services where provided: glucose,

cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, flu shots and

information about healthcare access.

Durante la SBS 2014 se llevaron a cabo 103

actividades en 17 ciudades del estado de

Washington.

During BHW 2014 there were a total of 103 activities in 17 cities in the state of Washington

Some numbers:

Participation of 37 organizations

and a total of 5,601 persons in the

different activities.

Algunas cifras:

y un total de 5,601 asistieron a

las diferentes actividades.

998 people benefited from

glucose, cholesterol and blood

pressure screenings; 104

women had a mammogram

and 19 Pap smears; there

were also 95 sight and 21

Hepatitis C exams; 7 HIV

screenings; and, 402 flu

shots.

Se practicaron 998 pruebas

de glucosa, colesterol y presión arterial; 104

mujeres se hicieron una mamografía y 19 Papanicolaou; 95

exámenes de la vista; 21 de Hepatitis C; 7 pruebas

de VIH; y, 402 vacunas contra la influenza.

Salud es movimiento – Health is movement

Este año, la imagen internacional de la Semana Binacional de Salud se titula “Triciclo”. Es obra

de Fulgencio Lazo, artista oaxaqueño residente en la ciudad de Seattle. Fulgencio estudió en la

Escuela de Bellas Artes de Oaxaca con el Maestro Shinzaburo Takeda. Ha expuesto su obra en

México, Estados Unidos, Japón y Francia. Lazo es también reconocido localmente por su

trabajo comunitario y a favor de los artistas jóvenes de origen latino en el Pacífico Noroeste.

This year, the image for

Binational Health Week in

all participating countries

was ¨Trycicle¨. It is a work

by Fulgencio Lazo, an artist

from Oaxaca who lives in

Seattle. Fulgencio studied at

the Oaxaca Fine Arts

School, with Master

Shinzaburo Takeda. He has

exhibited his work in

Mexico, the United States,

Japan and France. Lazo is

also recognized locally for his

community engagement and

support for young Latino

artists in the Pacific

Northwest.
