Introducción

Las apariciones de la Madre de Dios en Bosnia y Herzegowina continúan creando un interéscreciente en el público en general. Por esta razón ha habido numerosas peticiones de publicar unaversión corta sobre las apariciones en Medjugorje en el que los eventos más importantes sedescriban con precisión. Esta versión también puede ser útil contestando varios informes falsos ycontradictorios que han estado circulando recientemente y darán la bienvenida indudablementecomo una pieza instructiva de literatura para todos los lectores interesados.

El libro escrito por el sacerdote croata Marijan Ljubic ha servido como la fuente principal deinformación. La séptima edición titulada "Las Apariciones de la Madre de Dios en Medjugorje" sepublicó en Octubre de 1985.

Este informe no quiere pre-aíslar la autoridad de la Iglesia. Claramente la Iglesia debe formar suspropias conclusiones con respecto a las apariciones y esto será sólo posible cuando cesen lasapariciones. Nosotros debemos enfatizar que seguimos y nos subordinamos al juicio de la Iglesia,y creemos que un recuento exacto de informes de testigos presentes es la mejor respuesta a lacrítica.

Medjugorje es un pueblo en las montañas cerca de Mostar. Las ciudades más cercanas sonSarajevo, Raja y Dubrovnik. La región se llama Herzegowina occidental. Es conocida como una delas islas más fieles de creencia católica en Yugoslavia comunista aunque de 1482 a 1872 seexpuso a las severas presiones islámicas bajo los Turcos. De estos tempranos días la oficinapastoral estaba a cargo de los franciscanos quienes hoy sostienen la administración de laparroquia de Medjugorje. Al lado del pueblo principal de Medjugorje, la parroquia incluye variospueblos más pequeños Bijakovici, Miletina, Vionica y Surmanci.

La traducción inglesa del nombre croata Medjugorje es "entre las montañas", de hecho el puebloestá rodeado en ambos lados por montañas. Uno se llama "Krizevac" el cual en español significa"montaña de la Cruz". En 1933 una cruz de concreto de 12m de alto se erigió en esta montaña porlos parroquianos en la ocasión de 1900 años de la muerte de Jesucristo. En Septiembre cerca de70,000 personas asistieron a una misa y celebraron el aniversario de este evento.

La otra montaña se llama "Crnica" qué se traduce como 'algo negro'. Fué en esta montaña dondecomenzaron las apariciones de la Madre de Dios en 1981 y todavía están continuando hoy.

Las recientes décadas la parroquia de Medjugorje ha generado 19 sacerdotes, 20 monjas y 3seminaristas, y todo esto a pesar del hecho que la población campesina nunca ha podido sosteneruna fe tradicional debido a las severas persecuciones sucesivas por los Turcos, los NacionalSocialistas y ahora los Comunistas. La religión para estas personas no se basa tanto en una fetradicional como un acto consciente de decisión. Cualquier sospecha acerca que el distrito essubdesarrollado es bastante erróneo. No sólo tiene trabajadores foráneos de Europa central deamplios horizontes locales, sino además un gran número de multiobreros experimentados yacadémicos que ha permitido el distrito para no quedarse atrás con el siglo 20.

En el espacio de dos años aproximadamente un y medio millón de peregrinos han visitadoMedjugorje.

Las dramáticas primeras semanas

Las recientes apariciones por la Madre de Dios en la ex-Yugoslavia son la última cosa que laIglesia y la gente en general esperó.

24 de junio de 1981, el Día de San Juan, una fiesta religiosa, las cuatro por la tarde: Las dosmuchachas, Ivanka y Marija, dan un paseo arriba del pueblo por la tierra de pastoraje usada paralas ovejas. Una vez allí Ivanka ve algo que brilla en la bajada de la montaña. Ella mira más cerca yve a una mujer joven luminosa. ¡Ella sin pensar dice a su compañera, "Mira la Gospa! " (Gospa esel nombre croata para la Madre de Dios).

"Mejor quédate callada o alguien podría oírte. ¿Por qué debería aparecerse la Gospa a nosotros?"

Con esto la conversación acaba y las muchachas se devuelven a casa.Naturalmente ellas están un poco perturbadas y le cuentan a sus parientes sobre eso.Esa tarde ellas tienen que sacar las ovejas, y con una tercera muchacha llamada Milka, (hermanade la visionaria Marija), se devuelven al mismo lugar."La Gospa está allí de nuevo" exclama Ivanka cuando ella apunta con una mano extendida a unlugar definido. Las otras dos la ven también, y las tres tienen su mirada fija con un impotenteasombro, incapaces de hablar. Una cuarta muchacha llamada Vicka se les acerca.

"Ven aquí rápidamente" las tres gritan con gran excitación. Vicka a pesar de estar a una distancialejana les dice "¿Qué pasa, es una serpiente?"

Vicka corre donde ellas y al ver la figura brillante se aterra. Ella se toma sus zapatos y corre de apie como si corriera por su vida, pero luego de darse cuenta de lo que ella había visto, se detiene yretorna donde las otras tres. No huyan de la Madre de Dios.

Luego Ivan de 16 años viene por el camino llevando una bolsa de manzanas. Él ve a lasmuchachas que están de pie allí en asombro silencioso que apuntan a la aparición. El muchacho love también, e inmóvil con miedo él deja caer las manzanas y corre lejos. Un segundo muchacho(Ivan Ivankovic) quién es mucho mayor está cercano. Él sólo ve una luz brillante y considerándosemás maduro que los niños más jóvenes él se marcha. Él no vuelve durante los días siguientes, (ynunca más ve a Nuestra Señora).

Cuando ellos llegan a casa, Ivan y las cuatro muchachas, incapaces para esconder su excitación,le cuentan la experiencia a todos sus vecinos. la reacción es de risa y nadie los toma en serio.

El próximo día, 25 de junio., Mirjana, Ivanka, Vicka, Ivan, Jakov y Marija, regresan de nuevo almismo lugar, pero Milka está ausente. (Milka nunca más ve a Nuestra Señora). Los seis ven laaparición con los brazos extendidos y corren hacia ella tan rápido como ellos pueden.

Estando de pie directamente delante de la Madre de Dios, los niños lloran con emoción. Ellos searrodillan y oran. La madre de Ivanka había fallecido dos meses antes. La muchacha se atreve apreguntarle a la aparición cómo su madre está. Las respuestas de la Gospa:"Ella está bien. Tú no deberías preocuparte por tu madre. Ella es mi ángel celestial."

Entonces los niños le preguntan a la Gospa si Ella vendrá mañana de nuevo. Ella contesta: "Sí yovolveré."

El tercer día, viernes.

Los niños ven la figura un poco más alto en la montaña, pero ellos están separados de aquello porlos arbustos casi impenetrables de espinas, por piedras afiladas y hoyos en la tierra. Ellos correnmuy rápido a través de estos obstáculos sin herirse y esto causa a los primeros espectadores delpueblo el empezar a creer.

En este momento Vicka rocea la figura con agua santa y sal bendita.

"Si usted es la Madre de Dios, quédese aquí, si usted no lo es, se marcha."

La Señora solo sonríe.

Ivanka pregunta de nuevo por su madre difunta,

"¿No dejó ella un mensaje para nosotros?"

"Sí, ella dijo que has de escuchar a tu abuela y ayudarla. Ella está anciana. "Entonces los niños lepreguntan a la Gospa por qué ella se aparece particularmente a ellos. Ellos no son de hecho nadaespecial. Su respuesta: la Madre de Dios nunca busca lo más impresionante. Ella quiere estarentre los creyentes. Ella desea que las personas se conviertan y vuelvan al correcto caminomientras todavía halla tiempo. Las noticias de los fenómenos se habían extendido a través de lagente con la velocidad de un relámpago y 1000 espectadores están en la tercera aparición.

Cuando la aparición está empezando la muchedumbre ve una luz llameante que se estira de latierra al cielo, pero ellos no ven a la Madre del propio Dios. Ellos ven a los niños que hablan conalguien invisible pero sólo ven sus labios que mueven y no entienden una palabra.

En el cuarto día las autoridades comunistas entran en la acción. Los videntes son interrogados yenviados a Citluc para un examen médico. Ellos son declarados saludables y normales.

En el quinto día, domingo, hay 15,000 personas esperando. El régimen no ha calculado semejantemuchedumbre y los pocos policías y soldados son impotentes. Ellos sólo pueden mirar.

En el sexto día las autoridades comunistas planean un movimiento estratégico en el cual ellosesperan "rápidamente acabar con estos eventos extra-ordinarios". Los videntes deben ver a unpsiquiatra en Mostar. Se espera que narcóticos o pruebas de enfermedad psiquiátrica sirvan comouna explicación. El resultado de la prueba psiquiátrica es lo siguiente:

"Todos los seis son completamente saludables y completamente normales."

En el séptimo día las autoridades acuden a un nuevo truco. Dos señoras jóvenes, una de lascuales se aparece como confiable porque ella viene de Bijakovici ( la otra ha sido enviada por elgobierno comunista en Sarajevo), invitan a los videntes a un viaje de turismo.

No sospechando nada, cinco entran en el automóvil. No estaba claro hasta después que elloshabían salido, que la razón era que estuviesen entretenidos y conducidos alrededor de tal forma demantenerlos alejados del lugar de la aparición.

Cuando el momento de la aparición llega, todos, los cinco dan gritos simultáneamente "Pare!" elautomóvil se detiene en el borde del camino. Los videntes consiguen salir y se dejan caer a susrodillas al lado del vehículo. Las señoras se iluminan con cigarillos, pero ellos se dejan caerrápidamente de sus manos cuando un indescriptible aluvión de luz envuelve a ellas y los niños. Lasdos mujeres se ponen a pensar sobre como irse lejos de Medjugorje tan rápidamente como seaposible. Ellas no se han visto allí de nuevo.

Padre Zovko ha estado solo en Medjugorje desde los últimos ocho meses. Él es un hombreprofundamente religioso. Del 17 a 24 de junio él estaba asistiendo a un retiro, lejos, cerca deZagreb aproximadamente 400 km. Durante su ausencia el edificio comunal comunista, la discotecay correo fueron todos destruidos por el fuego después de ser golpeados por relámpagos. Él habíaintentado varias veces telefonear a su parroquia, pero debido a que la línea telefónica había sidodestruída él no se conectó.

En su retorno él ve las negras ruinas quemadas y al mismo tiempo se encuentra con una granmuchedumbre de personas delante de la rectoría.

"Qué necesita toda esta gente aquí"? "La Madre de Dios ha aparecido en nuestro pueblo tres díasseguidos."

"¿Perdón, qué está usted diciéndome?"

Padre Zovko se asusta. Porque él ha estado en la parroquia un corto tiempo donde él apenasconoce a los videntes o sus familias. Él es un miembro del movimiento carismático, pero hastaahora ninguno de los seis videntes ha asistido a su círculo de oración. Él sospecha que lasautoridades comunistas estén detrás de todo esto, y su objetivo es crear dificultades para él con elrégimen. Él no descarta la posibilidad de que los jóvenes podrían tomar narcóticos.

En un cuarto en la rectoría él cuestiona a los seis, uno después del otro. Cada conversación esgrabada para que ellos puedan compararse. Todas sus sospechas son apaciguadas sin embargopor su obvia inteligencia y la manera sencilla fresca los niños charlan.

"¿Están ellos mentalmente enfermos? Ciertamente no."

"Entonces quizás es trabajo del diablo."

El forcejeo del padre Zovko

Todos los días el padre Zovko ve más grande el gentío de personas que hace peregrinaciones allugar donde son las apariciones suceden, pero él no va con ellos. Él permanece resueltamente ensu iglesia y ora a solas. Él es un hombre inteligente y sospechoso al reconocer lo que parece serun sensacionalismo superficial en las personas y algunos de sus co-sacerdotes.

"Puede alguna cosa como esto servir a la Fe?" él pregunta.

Como la multitud de personas que vuelve del lugar de la aparición va de paso a la iglesia, él puedeoírles reír y jurar. (Jurar es un vicio nacional en Croacia. Es raro terminar una conversación sinunos pocos juramentos).

"¿Es eso del Espíritu de Dios?"

Al pastor, su responsabilidad es como una carga dura de aplastar. Además él ha sido durantemucho tiempo un aguijón en el lado de las autoridades comunistas, y se cree que ellos estándecididos a capturarlos y la Iglesia entera. Él en su desesperación se encierra con llaves en suiglesia durante horas.

"(Dios, sólo tu puedes mostrarnos un camino fuera de éste.)"

En el entretanto después del fracaso de las pruebas psiquiátricas de los seis videntes, y el fracasodel llamado "viaje en el automóvil", la milicia se ha vuelto más agresiva. Los videntes sonarrestados, interrogados, soltados y puestos bajo arresto en las casas. Varios soldados hacenguardia en cada una de sus puertas y bajo ninguna circunstancia cualquiera se debe permitirle alos seis encontrarse con el gentío reunído en la montaña. Sin embargo como el tiempo de laaparición se acerca ellos saltan fuera de sus ventanas, se deslizan bajo los estrechos alambres delas viñas donde la milicia tiene dificultad que los sigua, y están de pronto en el lugar de la apariciónde nuevo. Ellos son arrestados y devueltos a la estación de policía donde sus vidas sonamenazadas con revólveres.

"No piensen que nosotros llevamos armas como adornos. Usted no se irán de este lugar vivos.Nosotros les dispararemos abajo con éstos."

Los seis jóvenes se ríen burlonamente de sus aprehensores y son soltados.

El día siguiente que ellos vuelven al lugar de la aparición. Sus padres son arrestados. La multitudde personas continúan yendo allí, aumentando en número y viniendo de lejos.

Dos veces diariamente ellos pasan a la iglesia de Medjugorje donde el padre Zovko ora solo.

La tarde del 30 de junio.

"Dios yo no sé qué más hacer. Por favor dáme una señal."

De repente el sacerdote oye una voz clara a pesar de que no hay nadie en el cuarto.

"Vé afuera y protege a los niños."

Obedeciendo la orden él deja el banco de oración, abre la puerta y va afuera. Él ha dado sólo unpaso cuando los seis videntes vuelan a él como un enjambre de abejas. "Por favor escóndanos,nosotros estamos siendo perseguidos por los soldados". El pastor los encierra con llave en uncuarto vacío en la rectoría y dice:

"Ustedes deben quedarse callados como ratones de iglesia."

La milicia corre más allá de la casa sin sospechar nada, y el cura Zovko resiste la guardia afuera.

Durante este tiempo María se aparece a los niños en la rectoría. Después ellos le cuentan al padreZovko que está pasando. Dado que el Comunismo Yugoslavo permite un grado tolerable delibertad dentro del muro de la iglesia, el pastor le pregunta a la Madre de Dios, a través de losniños, si ella podría aparecer dentro de la iglesia. La respuesta el próximo día está:

"Muy bien yo apareceré en la iglesia" e instantáneamente la palabra se recibe alrededor.

Es el 2 de julio, en la Fiesta de la visitación de María. Los tres caminos de la iglesia de Medjugorjeel cual hasta ahora han sido demasiado grandes, está llenos, como lo están el área en el frente dela iglesia. Padre Zovko guía la oración con el Rosario, escucha las confesiones, predica, y conducela Santa Misa. ¿Es esta todavía su parroquia? En lugar de su indiferencia normal, la muchedumbreestá ahora sumamente atenta a todo lo que está pasando..

Tres días de ayuno, no más juramentos

Padre Zovko les permite a los niños testificar verídicamente y sinceramente antes de lacongregación sus experiencias. El pequeño Jakov es puesto en los escalones del altar para quetodos puedan verlo. Las personas tienen lágrimas en sus ojos.

Padre Zovko llama a la multitud:

"Aceptarán ustedes ayunar durante tres días con nada más que pan y agua, para que el poder delos espíritus malos entre nosotros se rompa"? Todos contestan:

"Sí nosotros lo aceptaremos."

Por tres días ninguna persona fume. Ninguna cocción se haga, las cafeterías no vendan comidas,y ningún visitante en los restaurantes. Las personas estén de acuerdo mutuamente "Cualquiera

que continúa jurando debe pagar una multa en dinero en una caja común", y los preceptos tomarándespués a los sacerdotes. Los juramentos de pronto paran.

La multitud de personas continúa aumentando y más sacerdotes están apareciendo todo el tiempo.Los creyentes están de pie tan estrechos en la iglesia que la recepción de la Comunión es sóloposible al final de la Santa Misa. Antes de eso nadie podía moverse.

El Gospa ha pedido por siete oraciones, la del Señor, el Ave María, el Gloria al Padre y el Credo.Los videntes conducen las oraciones diariamente, y luego adicionalmente, el rosario completo.Muchas personas enfermas vienen y ellos piden a los videntes y a los creyentes que recen unaoración especial por ellos. Cada día un capellán da una introducción corta con respecto a lasapariciones y los mensajes de la Gospa. Cada vez más personas continúan llegando desde muylejos. Algunos vienen de las sitios más remotos de Yugoslavia, y muchos han viajado 60 a 80 kmde a pie, incluso descalzos. Hay católicos, ortodoxos y musulmanes. Se congreganaproximadamente 25 000 personas para la fiesta de la Ascensión de María.

La policía permite automóviles para sólo venir dentro de uno o dos kilómetros desde los edificiosde la iglesia y esto crea una atmósfera real de oración en la vecindad de la parroquia de la Iglesia.

De este tiempo todos los ayunos de Medjugorje son cada viernes con pan y agua. Peregrinos quese devuelven a casa del lugar de gracia llevan con ellos la alegría renovada de oración, yempiezan de nuevo su vida Cristiana con un nuevo fervor y con nuevo espíritu.

Llamada para el retorno y la penitencia

No hay ninguna tienda de regalos en Medjugorje, ni mercantilismo, nada para desviar a laspersonas de la oración. La población es pobre y lleva una vida modesta y satisfecha. Ellosentienden y obedecen la llamada de la Gospa como una llamada para el retorno y la penitencia.Hasta Octubre de 1981, 500 000 personas habían visitado Medjugorje y 100 000 habían asistido ala confesión. Sobre todo es el espíritu de amor y la calidez que el visitante hoy nota. ¿Cuántosmiles de peregrinos han sido alimentados y alojados sin ningún costo? Nadie en Medjugorje tomael dinero.

Prohibiciones, busca de casa, difamación,

El 12 de agosto las autoridades prohíben el acceso a la montaña de la aparición. El 17 ellosarrestan al padre Zovko; ellos pasan un día completo buscando la iglesia y la rectoría. Todo eldinero se confisca si es de las contribuciones, recolección en Misa, o es para el cuidado de la casa.Las monjas presentes en Medjugorje son sujetas a revisión.

Increíblemente las autoridades devuelven en pequeño tiempo después el dinero. Parece queaquéllos que lo habían arrebatado habían sido torturados por pesadillas. En este tiempoaproximadamente los medios de comunicación empiezan un diluvio de los más viles endifamaciones. Es dirigido contra Medjugorje, Padre Zovko y el Obispo de Mostar. Sin embargocuando las autoridades comprenden que esto sólo sirve incitar la curiosidad de las personas, y esen sí mismo un medio para propaganda, los informes paran abruptamente en septiembre.

Cura Zovko se quedó en prisión durante dos años y después fue transferido a otra parroquia. Loseditores de una revista de la iglesia quienes han expresado su creencia en la autenticidad de lasapariciones reciben ocho y cinco años de prisión.

¿Cuál es el mensaje de la Madre de Dios?

Conversión, fe, oración, penitencia, reconciliación, perdón, paz.

"Tú debes decirle al creyente que yo necesito sus oraciones, las oraciones de todos. Uno debe orartanto como sea posible y hacer penitencia porque muy pocos se han convertido. Muchos quetodavía se llaman Cristianos llevan una vida pagana."

El llamado de la Gospa es urgente: "No hay suficientes conversiones. Retornen y conviértansemientras todavía halla tiempo."

La Gospa habla de muchos conflictos entre personas; entre los individuos, familias, comunidadesmás grandes, e incluso los conflictos entre los estados.

Muchas personas que se llaman Cristianos meramente teniendo sus nombres ingresados en elregistro bautismal no parecen recordar lo que significa ser un Cristiano. Hay otros que todavía vana la iglesia, pero lo hacen sin una real fe. Todos deben convertirse. Muchos profesaron que losCristianos han dejado de orar del todo. Ellos deben darse cuenta realizar los siete Padrenuestros,el Avemaría, y el Gloria al Padre, son los requisitos mínimos de oración. Por sobre todo debeorarse conscientemente y de todo corazón.

El hecho que el ayuno halla desaparecido completamente de los Cristianos en vida representa unapérdida severa. Debe ser de nuevo practicado. La Gospa recomienda explícitamente el ayuno elviernes con nada más que pan y agua.

Los sacerdotes son los guardianes de la Fe, y su deber es cuidar la fe de las personas.

"Hace tu deber bien. Hace lo que la Iglesia te pide. A través de la oración uno puede lograrcualquier cosa."

En la fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción, el 8 de diciembre, la apariencia de la Gospa es de unauna profunda seriedad mas que de alegría. Ella se arrodilla y ora con los brazos extendidos:

"Mi Hijo más querido, yo te ruego que perdones al mundo los graves pecados con los cuales teofende."

Para el futuro la Gospa promete una señal visible y tangible permanente en la montaña de laaparición como prueba de la autenticidad de sus mensajes. Cuál señal será, y cuando apareceráya lo saben los videntes, pero es un secreto que no es permitido revelarlo.

Entretanto otras señales han sido vistas por muchas personas en la montaña Krizevac. Un cambiofísico de la cruz de concreto, una figura de luz que delinea el contorno de la Gospa, y una luzmisteriosa o fuego en la montaña que en varias ocasiones ha causado a las autoridades llamar alos bomberos. Los oficiales de bombero ven la luz pero son incapaces de proponer algunaexplicación.

Las señales que han aparecido hasta ahora "para aquéllos que no creen en la Gopa". La señalmás impresionante vendrá después, y será pronto. A los seis videntes les serán confiados diezsecretos algunos de los cuales serán revelados en futuras apariciones. Ninguno de estos secretosse ha hecho público, y ellos ni siquiera conocen a las autoridades de la Iglesia. Hasta ahora cadaesfuerzo por incitar a aquéllos que conocen a los videntes, o a través de destreza o fuerza, hafallado. Incluso el pequeño Jakov se ha resistido a estos esfuerzos.

La Gospa ha pedido que una fiesta conocida como "María Reina de la Paz" sea mantenida el 25 dejunio.

Hoy nadie duda la autenticidad de las apariciones en Medjugorje, salvo los oficiales del Partidocomunista. Las personas no hablan sobre eso más, ellos viven su mensaje. Conversión,reconciliación, regocijo del corazón, éstas son las nuevas realidades de vida, y cada visitante

puede tomar sostenimiento de ello. Hay muchos niños de la parroquia a quienes una hora deoración les parecía intolerable previamente. Ellos ahora oran fácilmente durante cuatro horas.

Durante las apariciones diarias, la Gospa gasta mucho tiempo con los videntes en oraciónconjunta. La extraordinaria comunión íntima de los seis con su "Madre Buena" es tan sincera, queuno apenas puede creerlo. La Señora los llama "andjeli moji" qué significa "mis ángeles". Losvidentes pueden discutir algo literalmente fuera de sus vidas jóvenes con ella.

La Gospa se adentra en todo. El pequeño Jakov a veces hace preguntas tan infantiles que losotros miran a la Señora esperando ansiosamente que ella no se halla ofendido. Ella no tomaofensa, ella solo sonríe amorosamente.

Contacto permanente con la Gospa

Si los videntes de Sarajevo, Mostar y Medjugorje están separados, la Gospa se apareceindividualmente a cada uno. Cuando Ivan ingresó a la universidad, él extrañó a los otros chicos y amenudo preguntó por ellos. Ella frecuentemente contestó "Mis ángeles hacen bien su penitencia."

Unas dos ocasiones la Gospa ha mostrado el paraíso a los videntes, una vez cuando ellosestuvieron juntos y una vez cuando Jakov y Vicka fueron por ellos. Los dos primos estaban solosen una pieza. La Gospa se apareció, los tomó por sus manos, y "simplemente los llevó al paraíso".Cuando una de sus madres entró al cuarto unos pocos minutos más tarde, estaba vacío, aunqueera imposible para ellos haber salido a través de la ventana o puerta. Veinte minutos después desu "desaparición" los niños estaban allí de nuevo. Tales cosas que ellos tienen que decir. Laprofundidad de empatía que ellos observaron entre el cielo y la tierra es casi imposible para loslimitados mortales entender.

Antes de que la Gospa les mostrara el Infierno a los videntes, ella preguntó si ellos lo aceptarían ono. Cuatro decidieron ir pero dos se negaron. Las visiones fugaces que ellos recibieron del mundodel más allá fueron para un propósito muy específico:

"Todos sus esfuerzos deben dirigirse hacia las personas salvadoras del tormento más allá de latumba, y esto a través de vuestra oración y penitencia."

En una ocasión la Gospa les pide a los videntes ayunar con pan y agua durante una semanaentera. Los niños contestan: "Nosotros prometemos que nosotros lo haremos."

La Gospa contesta besando a los niños en la frente y diciendo "Ustedes son mis ángeles."

Tal familiaridad

Desde las apariciones, las personalidades de los seis se han desarrollado dramáticamente. Ésta esla opinión unánime de todos quiénes los conocen. Nada en sus jóvenes vidas realmente hacambiado. Ellos todavía experimentan las mismas dificultades y problemas como antes, ellostodavía llevan las mismas cruces. Aquéllos que encontraron difícil el aprender antes, lo encuentrantan duro después de las apariciones. Ninguna de sus marcas escolares ha mejorado. Una vezcuando los niños exigieron algo especial de ella, ella les dijo:

"Son impacientes mis ángeles."

Ahora innumerables personas han solicitado preguntas y hecho demandas a la Gospa a través delos videntes, y en numerosas ocasiones ellos han recibido respuestas detalladas a través de losniños. A veces los niños se habían olvidado de las preguntas extrañas incluso.

Cuando una pregunta fue hecha, y antes de que el niño hubiera terminado de preguntar, la Gospadijo :

"Cuéntale a la monja que yo entiendo su pregunta. El hermano fatalmente dañado ha muerto en lagracia, pero él necesita el sacramento de la Misa y la oración". En la pregunta de restaurar la saludal enfermo la Gospa nunca contesta con promesas, más bien ella responde con una exhortación ala conversión, oración y penitencia. Los videntes huyen de las cámaras y han esquivado lapublicidad. Con una paciencia que es difícil de entender ellos continúan contestando preguntashechas a ellos por personas curiosas. Vicka por ejemplo es investigada por aproximadamentecincuenta personas todos los días. Ella habla con ellos y responde sus preguntas de una maneraamistosamente cálida, y todos esto encima de su trabajo regular en la casa y en los campos.

La comunicación social con sus pares es completamente libre y natural si está con muchachos omuchachas. Cuando una mujer mayor los reprochó por eso, Mirjana dijo "La Señora no tienetiempo para los hipócritas." ( La Gospa ).

Todos los días el culto de la tarde dura hasta tres horas. Cuando todo se termina, los seis van acasa con una muchedumbre de personas jóvenes de su propia edad incluso durante la ocurrenciade la aparición. Nadie podría identificarlos fuera de la muchedumbre como los favorecidos, dehecho esto es sólo posible cuando ellos se ven de frente mientras oran. Todas las personasjóvenes de Medjugorje son piadosas.

¿Hay milagros en Medjugorje?

A mediados de 1982 en la parroquia de Medjugorje, se informaron 140 casos de personassanadas, concedidas a través de las oraciones, desgraciadamente la mayoría sin el beneficio deun certificado médico. A la Madre de Dios le gustaría ver cambios por una vida mejor, penitencia,cada vez que la piadosa intercesión se hace en nombre de una persona enferma y en particular,ayunos con pan y agua. La mayoría hace oídos lentamente. Acerca de los enfermos graves laGospa dice:"También pueden hacerse las leyes de naturaleza impotentes a través de la oración, penitencia,ayuno, y una fe firme."

Se citan los primeros dos milagros de curación conocidos para haber ocurrido en Medjugorjeliteralmente aquí:

(1) La primera persona que fué sanada por la intercesión de la Gospa era un hombre viejo llamadoJozo Vasilj. Tempranamente a los ocho años el lado izquierdo de su cuerpo se había paralizado. Élhabía perdido la vista en su ojo izquierdo, su brazo izquierdo se volvió bastante tieso y estuvocompletamente cubierto de heridas desde el hombro a la palma de la mano. No había mostradoninguna señal de curación en todo ese tiempo. Él podía distinguir sólo el día de la noche con su ojocorrecto, y después de cuatro años se volvió completamente ciego ese ojo, como Él era totalmentedependiente de la ayuda de otros, tenía que ser llevado a todas partes.

Cuando él oyó hablar de las apariciones en las montañas él dijo:

"Yo les diré si realmente es la Gospa o no."

Él pidió a un vecino traerle algo de tierra y plantas del lugar de la aparición. Su amigo no quisocooperar al principio, pero después de mucha persuasión él dijo que él lo haría. Jozo hizo unamezcla con agua en una vasija, y lavó su cara con ello. Al mismo tiempo él oró el Credo. LuegoEntonces se lavó con agua limpia, secado con una toalla, dijo a su esposa:

"Tú, mujer vieja, puedo verte". "No seas tonto, cómo podrías verme. Tú has estado ciego porcuatro años". "No estás avergonzado de tu misma, una vieja abuela que corre alrededor sin lasmedias puestas? "él contestó.Ahora ella tenía que creer en el milagro. La alegría era indescriptible. Jozo luego lavó su brazoizquierdo del hombro hacia abajo en la misma agua barrosa, lo envolvió en una toalla, y repitió laoración del Credo. La próxima mañana todas las heridas habían desaparecido sin rastro. El pastor

cooperó con la verdad de este evento. Quienes lo conocen dicen que Jozo siempre fue muypiadoso. Ahora a menudo cuando él no puede dormir por la noche él dice el Rosario y la Letanía.

"Con lo que yo viva no podré agradecer lo suficiente al Señor."

(2) Brevemente después de las apariciones que habían empezado, un pequeño niño paralítico pornombre Daniel (él tenía aproximadamente cinco o seis años de edad) fue tomado allí por suspadres. Ellos vinieron del cercano Mostar detrás de los videntes ellos se encomendaron a visitar laGospa. Ella miró al niño durante un minuto completo, y sin declarar cualquier condiciónsimplemente "El niño se sanará", y él fue sanado.

Algunas personas se han sanado de desórdenes mentales. Entre ellos han sido psiquiátricamenteenfermos y algunos esquizofrénicos. Otros se han librado del alcohol. El número más grande demilagros ha estado sin embargo en la conversión del corazón, el cambio de vivir, en la unión de lafe, y en la mejora de vida de innumerables personas en lugar del nivel superficial de materialismo ysensacionalismo.

Si el confesionario podría hablar, cantidad de cantidades no podría llenar en ningún momento atodos. Muchos vienen a Medjugorje para descubrir su más profundo ser y así ser limpiado a travésde la confesión. Cuando la iglesia está poblada se oyen confesiones al aire libre. El sacerdote sesienta en una silla y la persona en confesión se arrodilla en la tierra ante él. No es raro que lasconfesiones sean oídas de esta manera alrededor del exterior de la iglesia. En los tiempos másfríos muchos sacerdotes se sientan fuera durante horas con el fin de escuchar las confesiones yparece un milagro en sí mismo porque ninguno de ellos se ha resfriado.

¿Y el Estado que dice con respecto a esto?

El Estado considera este asunto del todo como una amenaza directa a su autoridad, y hademostrado que recurrirá a cualquier táctica para suprimirlo. Hasta ahora ellos han usadointimidación, amenazas, arrestos, e incluso el encierro de noche en la funeraria local o el hospitalmental. Como el "incitador de las apariciones" padre Zovko fue originalmente sentenciado a tresaños y medio en prisión, pero esto se redujo después a un año y medio. Durante mucho tiempo elacceso al lugar de las apariciones fue prohibido. La adaptación de los peregrinos que siempre hansido atendidos por la gente de buena gana, y siempre libre de cobros, se ha hecho ahora casiimposible por la roja cinta burocrática.

Las autoridades no cerraron la región completamente, pero las tropas armadas especiales estánsupuestamente listas para la acción en las montañas circundantes. Los viajeros son a menudoarrestados de una manera molestosa, y los completos autobúses son enviados de vuelta en algunasugerencia de desprecio imprudente.

Cualquiera que ha estado allí tres veces será expulsado de la fiesta en seguida.

"¿Y cuán frecuente has ido a las montañas camarada N.N ?"

“Ahora yo he estado allí nueve veces, así que usted a lo mejor me expulsaría de la fiesta tresveces"

El crecimiento a futuro

El 24 y 25 de junio de 1982, aniversario de la primera aparición, aproximadamente 100.000personas hicieron la peregrinación a Medjugorje. Muchos vinieron de a pie, y más que unos pocosestaban descalzos. Cientos de sacerdotes estaban escuchando las confesiones y la muchedumbreentera se consagró al Corazón Inmaculado de María. En ninguna parte del mundo podría elllamado de María desde Fátima ir seguido por semejante muchedumbre como lo fué en Medjugorjeen esa ocasión.

Varios veces la Gospa fue preguntada de por qué las apariciones son tanto más íntimas yfrecuentes comparadas a las de Lourdes y Fátima. Respuesta:

"Porque ellas son las últimas apariciones. En el futuro habrá todavía unas pocas aparicionesfalsas, pero ésta es la última vez que yo vendré a enseñar a las personas. Yo no me iré bajo tierranunca más."

¿Estamos verdaderamente parados en el final de los tiempos? Aquí las opiniones difieren. Nadietiene el derecho de hacer predicciones sobre el curso futuro del mundo, pero considerando lacarrera armamentista la cual no tiene ningún paralelo en la historia, y el abandono inaudito (nuncavisto ) de la fe, parece que el cielo está haciendo un último y más intensivo esfuerzo por rescatar ala humanidad de sus errores. ¿Esto es lo que nos preguntamos? ¿No sería María una Madre mala”si ella reeligiera a sus niños en su tiempo de necesidad extrema?

¿La Sagrada Escritura habla de la mujer (María) quién aplasta la cabeza de la serpiente (Satanáso el mal). Es muy sorprendente si hoy ella ha empezado la ofensiva final y que será de Ella, quiénarrestará finalmente la decidida marcha de impiedad y decadencia moral? No fue que predijo enFátima:"¿Al final mi Corazón Inmaculado triunfará?"

Nadie sabe el futuro, pero cualquiera que considera imparcialmente los eventos de Medjugorjedebe admitir dos cosas:

(1) Nunca antes en la historia ha habido allí tal cercano e íntimo contacto entre el cielo y la tierracomo está ocurriendo ahora en Croacia comunista, y

(2) Las dimensiones de este movimiento hacia la conversión que asumirá en el futuro, estotalmente desconocido.

La Gospa dice que nuestro tiempo está en "el poder del diablo" el cual "se romperá pronto". Pasaráa través de "eventos que siguen entre si rápidamente". La gran señal en la montaña de la aparición(Crnica) será vista allí, pero para entonces ya llegará demasiado tarde para convertir a muchos.

"Hoy el diablo prueba cada ser humano y la única manera de resistirse a este ataque es con unestricto ' No' a Satanás. Este ' No' es posible a través de la oración, sacrificio y expiación."

Una pregunta de interés universal involucra la misericordia de Dios. ¿Como un Dios de amor,pudiera él condenar a alguien a la condenación eterna? ¿No es verdad que esas cortes terrenalesimponen sentencias temporales, incluso para los crímenes graves? Mirjana había puesto estapregunta a la Gospa y la respuesta que ella recibió fue esto:

"Las personas que van al Infierno continúan negando lo bueno y ellos mismos se condenan aquedarse allí. Ahí no hay ningún escape."

Otras declaraciones por la Gospa sobre el Purgatorio y el Infierno son espantosamente severas.

Concerniente a la relación entre personas y sacerdotes, Ella observa eso en gente de Alemania,Austria y Suiza que juzgan la Fe según la manera en que los sacerdotes viven. Si les fallan lagente ya no cree en Dios. ¿Pero va uno a la iglesia debido a los sacerdotes? Por supuesto que no.Uno va debido a Dios. A Él uno ora y escucha.

Algunos de los acontecimientos terribles revelados a los videntes como parte de los diez secretospueden mitigarse a través de la oración ferviente, pero la otra parte no se puede. La negativaabsoluta por muchas personas para aceptar el hecho de su impiedad no permite ninguna otraposibilidad.

Subsecuentemente no hay ningún escape de estos terribles eventos, la Gospa da instruccionesexactas acerca de cómo las personas deben prepararse para cuando a ellos les pase. Esto no hacausa pánico o temor sino se sitúan completamente a merced de Dios.

“Aunque el convertido tiene todavía tiempo para ser así. Usted puede perder todo, pero usted nopuede perder a Dios", esa es la responsabilidad de los sacerdotes para ayudar a las personas aencontrar a Dios. Los más grandes peligros vienen de la falta de piedad. Esto es fuertementeevidente en Alemania. Debido al peligro agudo que enfrenta la paz del mundo la Gospa se llama"La Reina de la Paz". Esto significa que ella media la paz de Cristo a todos quienes oyen su voz ycumplen sus demandas. La Paz tiene que empezar en los corazones de los hombres antes de quepueda haber paz entre cualquier estado. Esto es sólo posible a través de la fe, devoción a Dios,oración, penitencia y ayuno. Porque la humanidad es tan mala, que los terribles eventos del futuroestán sólo a la vuelta de la esquina. Hay tantos profetas falsos hoy alrededor.

Las ásperas depresivas palabras escritas arriba no han recibido la aprobación de la Iglesia todavíay han estado por consiguiente todavía más allá de la autoridad de su proclamación. Si ellos poseencualquier autoridad en absoluto que el lector debe reconocerlo por si mismo como ellos sonconsiderados en la luz de realidades del mundano presente. ¿No se habla enigmáticamentenuestro mundo con armas atómicas? ¿No es nuestra sociedad próspera y moderna que haseguido más alejada de Cristo que antes en la historia? ¿No se ha vuelto la antidevoción elprincipal mal del siglo 20? Los lectores pueden responder estas preguntas por si mimos y entoncespodrán considerar las palabras de María.

La propagación de las apariciones y sus consecuencias

Las recientemente llamadas "apariciones en paralelo" ocurrieron en Herzegowina. Nuevasapariciones ocurrieron en varios lugares e incluyendo apariciones ante más niños. Como unaconsecuencia la Iglesia enfrenta todavía otra tarea difícil: Esto es para considerar si Medjugorjeestá imitándose, si el diablo está detrás de esto, o si de hecho María hace apariciones múltiplesposiblemente para mostrar el estado comunista que aunque puede cerrar con llave a los videntes ysus ministros, no puede encarcelar la aparición.

Las apariciones más interesantes pueden haber sido aquéllas experimentadas por la muchachaestudiante de once años de edad Jelena (en este corto informe nosotros desatenderemos todas lasdemás). Jelena que también viene de Medjugorje, oye la voz de María dentro de ella. La fuente delas apariciones que ella experimenta también es desde dentro y no se aparece externamente. Elmensaje propagado a través de ella, consiste en llamadas urgentes para la conversión del mundoentero. "Mi corazón está quemándose por ustedes. Conversión. Sólo conversión. Di esto a todos, atodos mis hijitos, todos mis hijitos."

"Tu no conoces nada de los planes de Dios, nada de lo que él enviará o hará. Yo sólo les pido quese conviértan ustedes mismos. Estén preparados para todo lo que está viniendo, pero lo másimportante de todo es que se conviertan ustedes mismos. Renuncien a todo porque ésa es partede la conversión."

Con su petición por ayunos la Gospa dijo:

"El Ayuno no basta por si solo; también debe renunciarse de los malos hábitos. Ayunar no tienevalor si tú pecas al mismo tiempo."

Los ejemplos de malos hábitos son tomados de cantidades excesivas de café y alcohol, vertelevisión, y fumar.

La Santa Misa es conciliación con Dios a través de un pálido sacrificio ofrecido por el sacerdote enel nombre de y en la instrucción de Jesús. El creyente debe prepararse espiritualmente mediahora antes de la Misa para estar totalmente receptivo.

El Viernes santo siguiente una segunda niña de once años de edad ve a la Gospa de la mismamanera como Jelena, pero sin poder oír su voz. Jelena es una niña normal pero pía y seria ennaturaleza. Algunas de las cosas que ella ha dicho van mucho más allá de los límites decomprensión de una niña normal de once años. Ella es extraordinariamente humilde.

A través de Jelena la Gospa expresó el deseo de un grupo de voluntarios que se dediquencompletamente al servicio de Jesús y a ella. Por el verano de 1983 este grupo bordeó alrededor de60 personas. La mayoría de ellos eran jóvenes.

Ellos siguen las siguientes reglas:

(1) Renunciar a todas las pasiones y deseos indignos, especialmente a los malos programas detelevisión y por supuesto a la televisión en general. Esto incluye fumar, tomar alcohol, uso excesivode tragos y alimentos, y el deporte excesivo.

(2) Rendirse totalmente a Dios.

(3) Dejar todo el miedo por última vez. No hay ningún lugar para el miedo en el corazón de uno quese lo da completamente a Dios. Las dificultades siempre existirán, pero ellas servirán parapromover el crecimiento espiritual y ser resultado para la Gloria de Dios.

(4) Empezar a amar a sus enemigos, no portar el odio, rencor o condenación en sus corazones,sino sólo amor y perdón. Orar por sus enemigos y e invocar la bendición de Dios en ellos.

(5) Ayunar dos veces por semana con pan y agua, y encontrarse una vez en la semana en grupo.

(6) Consagrar por lo menos 3 horas diarias a la oración donde el Rosario y la Santa Misa estánincluídos.

Además la Gospa dio también el siguiente consejo:

"No intenten preocuparse demasiado por las materias terrenales porque la falta de paz interna noes conducente a la oración. Si nosotros ponemos a Dios primero Él nos proporcionará nuestrasnecesidades terrenales y todo estará bien."

"Extender el espíritu de oración en el trabajo diario, y acompañar el trabajo con la oración."

"Oren, oren, oren. A través de la oración ustedes pueden lograr todo."

(7) Sean cautos con respecto al diablo. Él mira todos aquéllos que han decidido consagrarse aDios. Ellos también serán examinados por él. Él intentará convencerlos que ellos oran demasiado,que ellos ayunan demasiado, que ellos deberían ser como otras personas jóvenes y seguir los

caminos de placer. En lugar de obedecer al diablo ellos deberían prestar atención a la voz de laGospa. Una vez seguros en su fe el diablo ya no podrá dañarlos.

La Gospa parece ver sobre el grupo una manera especial. Últimamente su principio de exhortacióna ellos ha sido "vuelto abosorbido en sus vidas de oración."

Hoy uno consigue la impresión de que la Gospa viene por todos o nada. Es como si ella estáanimando a que las personas se pongan totalmente a su disposición; para ser Santos.

Un Ministro de Medjugorje dijo en el verano de 1983 que sospecha de ése grupo de 60 jóvenesdedicados, la Gospa está entrenando una especial orden religiosa y varios misioneros para futurostrabajos en la ex Yugoslavia. El tiempo parece haberse terminado cuando Dios tolere corazones amedio servicio para aquéllos supuestamente consagrados a Él. En 1983 en una carta a su Obispo,el ministro de Medjugorje dijo que muchas personas habían renunciado completamente al alcohol,nicotina, programas de entretenimiento y otros placeres. Muchos ayunan varias veces por semanacon pan y agua, y casi todos se reúnen mensualmente para la conciliación, penitencia y confesión.La oración diaria se emprende en profunda calma.

Una de las cosas más importantes que han pasado ha sido la reconciliación de las personas yclases donde había tensión y rechazo. Aquí uno realmente siente la ola fresca de oración ypenitencia que hoy nosotros miramos en vano llevando instituciones eclesiásticas.

Los 24 y 25 de junio del 1983, el segundo aniversario, había 150 000 peregrinos en Medjugorje.Ellos estuvieron rodeados y fueron observados por tropas especiales totalmente provistas delejército que se estacionaron en las montañas circundantes. Los peregrinos oraron todos a lo lragode la noche y sus confesiones duraron varias horas. El mensaje entregado por la aparición en esetiempo fue: "Conviértanse ustedes mismos. A todos yo quiero decirles que ser conviertan a símismos. Díganles esto tan rápidamente como sea posible a todos mis niños, a todos mis niños,conviértanse ustedes mismos."

En julio de 1983 el padre Josef Zovko, pastor durante los días históricos, fué transferido deMedjugorje a la diócesis más remota en la provincia, lejos del camino del pueblo de Bijakovici cercade Duvno, como capellán.

Aquí están unas palabras del padre Zovko habladas durante un sermón en Medjugorje después desu liberación de la prisión: "Es una ilusión defender la paz tan sólo con las armas. Ésa siempre esuna paz engañosa y artificial. La real paz fluye desde el corazón que se ha vuelto a Dios. Se gananguerras con oración. La victoria de Israel fue dependiente de los brazos levantados de Moisés queoró por su gente. Cuando sus brazos se alzaron la gente ganó, pero cuando él permitió que susbrazos se dejaran caer su gente fue derrotada. Hay muchos ejemplos en la historia donde losejércitos más débiles, reforzados a través de una multitud de oraciones, eran victoriosos porencima de los enemigos mucho más fuertes."

Los milagros y conversiones son testimonios de autenticidad

De Medjugorje y de sus alrededores se han informado muchos milagros qué han sucedido derepente o gradualmente. En el libro escrito por el Dr. Rupcic, se describen cincuenta y dosbrevemente. Aquí nosotros consideraremos dos de los más recientes informes citados en el librode Sr. Ljubic. Ellos son característicos de los trabajos de la Madre de Dios en Medjugorje.

Una conversión súbita

Un pastor de las afueras de Zagreb informó de un hombre de su parroquia que había sido durantemucho tiempo conocido como un ateo. Como un ateo activo él había criado a sus niños sin Dios. Niél " ni su familia alguna vez vinieron a la iglesia. A fines de 1982 él se enfermó de cáncer, sinninguna esperanza de ser curada y algunos de los creyentes intentaron persuadirlo para asistir a la

confesión. Él rechazó todos los esfuerzos con determinación. Muchos de su parroquia que habíanhecho la peregrinación a Medjugorje rezaron por él mientras estaban allí y también cuando ellosretornaron a casa. En otro momento ellos hicieron una intercesión especial a la Gospa a través deuno de los videntes. Los siguientes eventos tuvieron lugar brevemente después. Ellos estánconfirmados por sus parientes:

El día 3 de marzo de 1983 era jueves.

Después de que él almorzó en cama, su esposa tomó los platos a la cocina. Él se volvió encima dela cama hacia el otro lado y de repente vio la figura de la Madre de Dios en la pared. Ella seapareció desde la cintura a la cabeza y fue visible por aproximadamente un minuto. Ella lo miraba,sonrió, y no dijo nada. Él estaba totalmente consciente, totalmente al tanto, y un poco asustado. Élla miró fijamente a ella con una atención envolvente. Él nunca antes en toda su vida habíacontemplado tal belleza. La Gospa lo miraba con ojos penetrantes. Su cabeza se inclinóligeramente a un lado. Después de la aparición él lloró. Él no le dijo a nadie su experiencia.

Al día siguiente él le dijo a su esposa y a algunos otros lo que había pasado y les había dicho queél quería cofesarse. El pastor vino, él se confesó y recibió la sagrada comunión. Ahora él oramucho, él experimenta una paz interna y frecuentemente asiste a la sagrada comunión. Él jura quesi Dios le devolviera ahora su salud él nunca volvería a faltar a la Santa Misa los domingos.

Diez días después de su conversión unos conocidos lo visitaron. El hombre enfermo dio un informedetallado de su enfermedad y la operación que él había soportado, y luego relacionó la experienciade su conversión específicamente. Al mismo tiempo él señaló el lugar en la pared donde él habíavisto la Gospa. Él declaró que él a nadie en el mundo le impediría que se hablara acerca de esto. Aveces cuando su enfermedad se pone inaguantable él les pregunta a los otros en la casa para queoren junto a él.

Inmediatamente después de su conversión él devolvió su tarjeta de miembro de fiestas. Despuésde haber leído el libro sobre Medjugorje él le pidió a su hijo que visitara aquél lugar con un grupode personas. El hijo informó más tarde junto a otros peregrinos, que él había visto indicios delmilagro en la cruz de la montaña Krizevac. La conversión del hombre enfermo ha sido ampliamenteconocida y él es visitado ahora por muchas personas. Él les cuenta sobre Dios y la Gospa.

Sanado de esclerosis múltiple

En el boletín de la diócesis de Split, agosto de 1984, páginas 10-11, el siguiente milagro curativo esinformado bajo el título "Algo más allá sobre Medjugorje". El 13 de agosto un grupo deaproximadamente 30 peregrinos de Milano y Pavia visitaron al arzobispo en su retorno de lajornada desde Medjugorje. Entre ellos estaban cinco profesores universitarios. En esta ocasiónellos se encontraron también con el Obispo de Mostar, Mr. Pavao Zanic. Ellos le dieron un informede este milagro que había ocurrido en la iglesia en Medjugorje.

Una mujer italiana que había quedado completamente ciega y lisiada de esclerosis múltiple derepente se volvió sana nuevamente. Ella fue nuevamente capaz de caminar y la visión retornó ensu ojo derecho. Los médicos le han dado al Obispo de Mostar documentación médica apropiadaque describe la condición de la mujer antes y después de la recuperación, y se ha esperado queésta irá de alguna manera hacia establecer como hecho científico la naturaleza de los milagros.Aparte de este milagro, los detalles de cuales son irrefutables, otros asombrosos eventos de unanaturaleza similar han tenido lugar los cuales no podrían haber ocurrido acorde con alguna leynatural conocida. Muchos han sido científicamente documentados por médicos y su veracidad noadmite cuestionamientos.

Por supuesto es verdadera la veracidad de estos acontecimientos milagrosos que no puedenestablecerse por solo argumentos lógicos. Por esta razón es necesario no sólo usar la facultad deraciocinio de uno mismo, sino también estar dispuesto a aceptar un milagro. Éste es un milagro y

es lo que aparece haber sucedido en Medjugorje. Todos nosotros sabemos cómo los Fariseosacreditaron los milagros de Jesús al demonio.

Algunas personas han ofendido a la Madre de Dios aparecida diariamente en Medjugorje durantelos años. Ella dijo una vez que ella agradece a la parroquia local que ella fué recibida con tantoafecto y no fué rechazada como en otros lugares. Quizás ésta es una razón por la que ella hacontinuado apareciéndose a diario allí a través de los años.

Unos mensajes de la Gospa en el año 1984

A través de la vidente Marija, la Madre de Dios anunció los siguientes mensajes:

12/7/84: Queridos hijitos! Estos días Satanás quiere frustrar mis planes. Rezen para que su plan nosea realizado. Yo rezaré a mi hijo Jesús para que les dé la gracia de experimentar la victoria deJesús en las tentaciones de Satanás. Gracias por haber respondido a mi llamada."

11/8/84: Queridos hijitos! Rezen, porque Satanás desea complicar mis planes todavía más allá.Rezen con el corazón y ríndanse a Jesús en la oración.

Fin de agosto de 1984: La Gospa les pide orar y sacrificar tanto como sea posible ante la cruz desu Hijo.30/8/84: Queridos hijitos! La cruz también estaba en el plan de Dios cuando ustedes laconstruyeron. Esos días, especialmente, vayan a la montaña y rezen ante la cruz. Yo necesito susoraciones. Gracias por haber respondido a mi llamado."

En septiembre de 1984: No ayunen con una voluntad enferma, contra la voluntad, o por cualquierotra razón sino el amor. Sean agradecidos a la bondad de Dios que yo puedo venir a ustedes porun largo tiempo.

Me gustaría informar la impresión global de Medjugorje como predominante. ¿Por qué? Porque lafe, piedad, y el caluroso ánimo de la gente viene a nosotros los sofisticados medio europeos comoun severo susto. Yo he celebrado la Santa Misa cuatro veces y he distribuído la comunión también.Yo he visto las caras de los celebrantes en primer plano y todos se pierden así profundamente enla oración y uno queda estupefacto.

Lo anteriormente es sorprendente por el número de personas jóvenes, chicos y chicas, y hombresque toman parte. En casa la vida de la iglesia es apoyada a menudo sólo por las mujeres y losancianos, pero aquí cada estrato de la población es representada. Yo he sido agobiado por lasmultitudes de hombres píos en sus 30's y 40's, por las muchachas bastante jóvenes en vestidooccidental, y los hombres jóvenes enérgicos. Aquéllos que en nuestros pueblos "viven" en ladiscoteca están aquí feliz pasando tres horas diariamente en la iglesia sin cualquier señal defastidio. Ellos escuchan a los curas la prédica diaramente acerca de media hora, y todo esto en unpaís comunista donde cada juventud sabe que yendo a la iglesia podría costarle su trabajo.

Cuando las multitudes llegan atrasadas en la tarde, y la iglesia se ha llenado, el padre habla sobrela conversión y los aspectos prácticos de la confesión. Él le pide a cada persona que investigue ensu conciencia y reconozca sus pecados. Las personas se envían luego fuera donde otrossacerdotes están esperando oír la confesión.

Cuando yo vi esto yo apenas podía creerlo con mis ojos. Sentándose allí en diez sillas, bajo losárboles, en el campo, en el prado, y a lo largo de la pared de la iglesia, eran diez sacerdotes.Delante de cada sacerdote una pequeña cola de personas estaba. Cada persona en la colasimplemente estaba bastante lejos uno de otro para que nadie pudiera entender lo que el otroestaba diciendo. Uno después de otro fueron adelante, se arrodillaban ante el sacerdote,

susurraron, el sacerdote les habló, dio la absolución, hizo la señal de la cruz, y entonces siguió elpróximo.

En domingo arriba de 300 personas pueden haber ido a la confesión, en los días hábiles el númeroera menor, pero también había menos sacerdotes. Nosotros dos sacerdotes austríacos fuimosdesignados, pero aquéllos de habla alemán quienes llegaron por autobús nos evitaron. Ellos noeran croatas y no fueron a la confesión.

Herzegowina siempre ha sido una región profundamente religiosa, y sólo ha sido en los recientesaños la llamada “nueva moralidad" ha hecho cualquier impacto en Medjugorje. Hombres que bebenen la taberna, personas jóvenes en la discoteca, la televisión, el materialismo, las tensionesantisociales, el odio, la envidia, el adulterio y así sucesivamente. Cuatro días antes de queempezaran las apariciones, la discoteca se quemó después de un golpe de relámpago. Las ruinastodavía estaban humeando cuando la primera aparición ocurrió. Las personas jóvenes vieron estocomo una señal del cielo y transfirieron sus reuniones nocturnas a la iglesia. Hoy el alcoholismo, eladulterio, y la anti hostilidad social no es ningún problema mayor en Medjugorje. Las personas hanencontrado a Dios y están satisfechas.

Para mí como medio-europeo, es obvio que esta sorprendente e increíble conversión masiva hasido atribuída en no pequeña parte al sobresaliente ministerio pastoral ejercido por los franciscanosque se pusieron totalmente a disposición de las personas cuando ellos conducieron el movimientoa través de las oficinas de la Iglesia. Cuando un sacerdote dijo "Nosotros debemos creer lo que laMadre de Dios dice", otro sacerdote dijo, "No hay otra manera."

Ciertamente este movimiento masivo de conversión de almas no podría ser logrado por la Iglesiasin la intervención de alguna autoridad superior. Mi sentimiento es que esto habla por laautenticidad de las apariciones.

Nosotros no podíamos hablar con los videntes debido a las dificultades del idioma. No obstanteellos me ayudaron diariamente para que yo cambiara por dentro y por fuera mis vestimentas.Quizás mis ojos hablaron. Marija quien me ayudó todos los días, pareció reconocer mi impotencia ymi deseo de comunicarme. Su preocupación fue comunicada a través de las miradas y gestos. Yocreo que ella estaba mostrándome una manera amorosa que ella lo sentía por mí. Pero una cosaes cierta sobre esta niña, ella tiene un carisma el cual yo nunca había visto en mi vida encualquiera de su misma edad.

Tal ministerio carismático impone cargas en el joven, que el forastero no puede imaginar. Aparte desu trabajo diario en los campos y la casa, y su trabajo escolar, ellos también están involucradostres horas todas las tardes en el servicio divino. Ellos se pasan varios minutos en la comunión conla aparición y esto es seguido por una tremenda avalancha de gente hacia dentro de la iglesia. Enmi parroquia de casa tal multitud ocurre sólo dos o tres veces a lo sumo por año, y cuandocomparo con esta me he irritado y desilusionado.

Por causa de estos jóvenes, todos los cuales son bondadosos, amistosos y normales, estosservicios han seguido continuando tarde tras tarde durante los últimos dos años.

Después de 13 años de enseñanza en escuela y trabajando con los jóvenes. ¡Cuán rápidamente lagente joven tiende a imitar la conducta de la celebridades de los medios de comunicación! Estajuventud permanecía normal, o desagradablemente normal como un cura lo estableció. Ellos nodemostraron ningún rastro de orgullo.

Muchas personas que incluyendo algunos sacerdotes, vienen a divertirse a expensas de laaparición, mientras que otros asisten con gran escepticismo o para alentar el sensacionalismo. Losvidentes muy rápidamente reconocen los motivos de cada persona y responden de acuerdo a eso.A los peregrinos que están en una búsqueda religiosa auténtica ellos los atienden con amor ypaciencia, de los otros ellos se retiran.

Para mí la segunda prueba de la autenticidad de estos eventos se fundamenta en los videntes ensi mismos. Su pureza de alma, su simplicidad, y la luminosidad que ellos irradian es algo que yoencuentro difícil de expresarlo en palabras. Pareciera que la mano de Dios está visible, no tanto enlas apariciones en si mismas como en sus efectos. Uno podría argumentar de la Sagrada Escritura"Por sus frutos tú los conocerás."

Los frutos de Medjugorje son buenos por lo que hemos presenciado la conversión exitosa demuchos miles de personas. Pensar en este acontecimiento en Austria representa un pensamientoútopico y probablemente irreal, por lo menos hasta ahora. Nosotros sabemos que este despertarreligioso se ha extendido a todas las provincias de la ex Yugoslavia, y esto incluye a Eslovenia, laque está en la frontera austríaca. Yo le ruego a Dios que esto no se detenga allí.Yo vine aquí por más que curiosidad, y si soy honesto conmigo mismo, secretamente esperandode hacer contacto con lo sobrenatural. Pero yo vi algo diferente.

De vuelta a casa el decreciente continuo número de personas jóvenes al Servicio Divino pareceestar creando una iglesia que sólo alimenta espiritualmente a mujeres, niños y personas ancianas.Aunque no es completamente de esa manera en mi propia parroquia todavía, yo puedo ver queestá tomando el rumbo en esa dirección y esto me hace considerar la situación muyprofundamente.Siempre ha habido aquéllos que son fuertes en la fe, y han permanecido así, pero yo he creído quemuchos otros son virtualmente incapaces de convertirse. Cuando yo consideré la posibilidad delredespertar religioso parecía que la creencia estaba necesariamente limitada a grupos de sacrificiotales como el Fockolarini, o el movimiento Carismático.Aquí mi fe ha sido reafirmada. Cuando yo vi la iglesia llena con tal volumen de personas la mayoríade los cuales estaba entre 20 y 50 años de edad, yo apenas podía creerlo. Yo he visto esto pasarahora por ocho tardes seguidas y durante tres horas en cada ocasión, y mi esperanza en lahumanidad se ha restaurado.

Éso ha sido mi regalo de Medjugorje. Incluso si yo no supiera como traspasar este fenómenodesde Herzegowina a Austria, yo creo de nuevo que la gente, por supuesto toda la gente, es capazde experimentar una religiosidad profunda. Probablemente la receta para el éxito pertenecesolamente a la Madre de Dios en la unión con la Gracia Divina.

Pastor Werner Schur, Kartisch,(Esta parte del informe se toma del periódico del Tirol oriental).Las peregrinaciones a Medjugorje

En las diferentes publicaciones se han publicado falsos informes acerca de la supuesta prohibiciónde peregrinaciones a Medjugorje. Por lo tanto parece ser necesario para nosotros clarificar lasituación en este folleto y lo que sigue podría ser considerado una pauta práctica.

Una declaración del 12 de octubre de 1984 emitida por los Obispos de los estados de la exYugoslavia establece:"Los Obispos han considerado las ocurrencias en Herzegowina/Medjugorje y una apreciación delsignificado de estos eventos después de que ellos hayan sido sometidos a una completo y expertoexamen. Éste es el deber exclusivo de las autoridades de la Iglesia apropiadas y hasta entoncesninguna peregrinación oficial a Medjugorje puede organizarse sin ser sancionada. Nosotros noprejuzgaríamos el veredicto de aquellos responsables para la vida eclesiástica”.

(AKSA, Nr 42 (753) de los 19110 1984, S. 2)A continuación de esto las peregrinaciones a Medjugorje no pueden ser organizadas oficialmentepor organizaciones eclesiásticas o personas así evitando la imagen acerca de que la iglesia sehaya pronunciado ya un juicio positivo de acuerdo a la veracidad de las apariciones de María enMedjugorje.

No dice sin embargo que las peregrinaciones a Medjugorje no pueden hacerse. En respuesta a laspreguntas de los lectores el periódico católico Croations de Yugoslavia, "Glas Koncila" declara ensu editorial: "... nosotros no creemos que es correcto que el Obispo prohíba las peregrinaciones aMedjugorje. Todo fiel con fe de la Iglesia tiene el derecho, ya sea acompañado o sólo de visitarcualquier iglesia en el mundo que lo atraiga por razones de fe o como una fuente de actividadespiritual. Pero es verdad que el Obispo está obligado a informar a los fieles que aún no hay juicioeclesiástico acerca de los eventos que existen en Medjugorje y por esa razón las peregrinacionesno pueden ser oficialmente hechas. Sucede que ningún sacerdote puede conducir unaperegrinación a Medjugorje como podría hacerlo a Lourdes o Fatima."

IntroductionThe apparitions of the Mother of God in Bosnia and Herzegowina continue to create an everincreasing interest in the general public. For this reason there have been numerous requests topublish a shortened version of the appearances in Medjugorje in which the most important eventsare accurately described. This version may also be useful in answering several false andcontradictory reports which have been circulating recently and will no doubt be welcomed as aninstructive piece of literature by all interested readers.The book written by the Croatian priest Marijan Ljubic served as the main source of information.The seventh edition entitled "The Apparitions of the Mother of God in Medjugorje" was published inOctober 1985 .This report will in no way preempt the authority of the Church. Clearly the Church must form its ownconclusions regarding the apparitions and this will only be possible when the appearances cease.We must stress we follow and subordinate ourselves to the judgement of the Church, and believean accurate recounting of eyewitness reports is the best answer to criticism.Medjugorje is a village in the mountains near Mostar.. The nearest cities are Sarajevo, Split andDubrovnik. The region is called west Herzegowina. It is known as one of the most faithful islands ofCatholic belief in Communist Yugoslavia although from 1482 to 1872 it was exposed to the severestIslamic pressures under the Turks. From these early days the pastoral office was in the charge ofthe Franciscans who sill minister to parish of Medjugorje today. Beside the main village ofMedjugorje the parish includes several smaller villages Bijakovici, Miletina, Vionica and Surmanci.The English translation of the Croation name Medjugorje is "between the mountains", indeed thevillage is bordered on two sides by mountains. One is called "Krizevac" which in English meansmountain of the Cross'. In 1933 a concrete cross 12m high was erected on this mountain by theparishioners on the occasion of the 1900th anniversary of the death of Jesus Christ. In Septembernearly 70, 000 poeple attended a mass, celebrating the anniversary of this event.The other mountain is called "Crnica" which translates as 'something black'. It was on this mountainthe apparitions of the Mother of God commenced in 1981 and they are still continuing today.The recent decades the parish of Medjugorje has produced 19 priests, 20 nuns and 3 seminarians,and all this despite the fact the peasant population has never been able to sustain a traditional faithbecause of severe successive persecutions by the Turks, the National Socialists and now theCommunists. Religion to these people is based not so much upon a traditional faith as a consciousact of desision. Any suspicion the district is backward is quite erroneous. Not only have theguestworkers of central Europe broadened local horizons, but a large number of multi skilledworkers and academics have allowed the district to keep pace with the 20th century.In the space of about two years approximately one and a half million pilgrims have visitedMedjugorje.The dramatic first weeksThe recent apparitions by the Mother of God in ex Yugoslavia were the last thing the Church andgeneral population expected.24. June 1981, St John's Day, a religious holiday, four o'clock in the afternoon: Two girls, Ivankaand Mirijana, go for a walk above their villagetowards the pasture land used for the sheep. Oncethere Ivanka sees something shining on the slope of the mountain. She looks closer and sees aluminous young woman. Without even thinking she utters to her companion, "Look the Gospa! "(Gospa is the Croatian name for the Mother of God)."Better be quiet or somebody might hear you. Why would the Gospa appear to us?"With this the conversation ends and the girls return home.

Naturally they are a little disturbed and tell their relatives about it.

That evening they have to fetch the sheep, and with a third girl called Milka, (sister of vissionaryMarija), return to the same spot.

"The Gospa is there again" exclaims Ivanka as she points with an outstretched hand to a definiteplace. The other two see it as well, and all three stare in helpless amazement, unable to speak. Afourth girl called Vicka approaches them."Come here quickly" the three shout in great excitement. Vicka still a fair distance away calls"What's the matter, is it a snake?"Vicka runs up to them and upon seeing the shining figure becomes terrified. She takes off hershoes and runs away in stockinged feet as though running for dear life, but then realising what shehad seen, stops and returns to the other three. You don't run away from the Mother of God.Then 16 year old Ivan comes along the path carrying a bag of apples. He sees the girls standingthere in silent amazement pointing to the apparition. The boy sees it as well, and motionless withfear he drops the apples and runs away. A second boy (Ivan Ivanković) who is quite a bit older isnear by. He only sees a shining light and considering himself more mature than the youngerchildren he leaves. He does not return during the following days, (and never more has not see OurLady).When they get home, Ivan and the four girls, unable to hide their excitement, tell the experience toall their neighbors. the reaction is one of laughter and nobody takes them seriously.Next day on June 25th., Mirjana, Ivanka, Vicka, Ivan, Jakov and Marija, again go back to the sameplace, but Milka is missing. (Milka never more has not see Our Lady). All six see the apparition withoutstretched arms and run towards her as fast as they can.Standing directly in front of the Mother of God, the children weep with emotion. They kneel downand pray. Ivanka's mother had passed away two months before. The girl dares to ask the apparitionhow her mother is. The Gospa answers:"She is well. You should not worry about your mother. She is my heavenly angel".Then the children ask the Gospa if She will come again tomorrow. She replies "Yes I shall return".The third day, Friday.The children see the figure a little higher up the mountain, but they are separated from it by nearlyimpenetrable bushes of thorns, by sharp stones and holes in the ground. They run very fast throughthese obstacles without hurting themselves and this causes the first onlookers from the village tostart believing.This time Vicka sprinkles the figure with holy water and consecrated salt."If you are the Mother of God, stay here, if you are not, go away".The Lady just smiles.Ivanka asks again about her deceased mother,"Did she not leave a message for us?""Yes, she said you ought to listen to your grandmother and help her. She is old."Then the childrenask the Gospa why she appears particularly to them. They are indeed nothing special. Her answer:the Mother of god never looks for the most impressive. She wants to be among believers. Shewishes the people would convert and turn back to the righteous way whilst there is still time. Newsof the phenomena had spread through the population with the speed of lightning and 1000onlookers are at the third appearance.When the apparition is starting the crowd sees a blazing light stretching from earth to heaven, butthey do not see the Mother of God herself. They see the children talking with someone invisible butonly see their lips moving and don't understand a word.On the fourth day the Communist authorities get into action. The seers are interrogated and sent toCitluc for a medical examination. They are declared healthy and normal.On the fifth day, Sunday, there are 15,000 people waiting. The regime has not reckoned on such acrowd and the few police and soldiers are powerless. They can only look on.On the sixth day the Communist authorities plan a strategic move which they hope will "quickly putan end to these extraordinary events". The seers must see a psychiatrist in Mostar. It is hopedeither narcotics or proof of psychiatric illness will serve as an explanation. The result of thepsychiatric test reads:"All six are thoroughly healthy and completely normal".On the seventh day the authorities resort to a new trick. Two young ladies, one of whom mustappear trustworthy because she comes from Bijakovici (the other has been sent by the Communistgovernment in Sarajevo), invite the seers on a sightseeing trip.

Suspecting nothing, five get into car. It was not clear until after they had left, that the reason theywere being entertained and driven around in such grand style was to keep them from the place ofapparition.When the moment of apparition arrives all five call out simultaneously "Stop!" at which the car isstopped on the edge of the road. The seers get out and drop to their knees beside the vehicle. Theladies light up with cigarettes, but they are quickly dropped from their hands when an indescribableflood of light envelopes them and the children. All the two women can think about is getting awayfrom Medjugorje as quickly as possible. They will not be seen there again.Padre Zovko has only been pastor in Medjugorje for the past eight months. He is a deeply religiousman. From June 17th to 24th he was attending a retreat near Zagreb approximately 400 km away.During his absence the Communist communal building, the discotheque and post office were alldestroyed by fire after being struck by lightning. He had tried several times to telephone his parish,but because the phone exchange had been destroyed he was not connected.Upon his return he sees the black burned ruins and at the same time runs into a large crowd ofpeople in front of the rectory."What do all those people want there?" "The Mother of God has appeared in our village three daysin a row" ."I beg your pardon, what's this you're telling me?"Padre Zovko is shocked. Because he has been in the parish for such a short time he hardly knowsthe seers or their families. He is a member of the charismatic movement, but up to now not one ofthe six seers has attended his prayer circle. He suspects the Communist authorities are behind this,and their objective is to create difficulties for him with the regime. He does not dismiss the possibilitythe youths could have taken narcotics.In a room in the rectory he questions all six, one after the other. Each conversation is taped so theycan be compared. All his suspicions are allayed however by their obvious intelligence and the freshunaffected way the children talk."Are they mentally ill? Certainly not"."Then perhaps it is the work of the devil".The struggle of padre ZovkoEvery day padre Zovko sees larger crowds of people making pilgrimages to the place where theapparition appears, but he does not go with them. He remains resolutely in his church and praysalone. He is an intelligent man and suspects he recognises what appears to be a superficialsensationalism in the people and some of his co-priests."Can anything like this serve the Faith?" he asks.As the crowds of people returning from the place of apparition pass his church, he can hear themlaughing and swearing. (Swearing is a national vice in Croatia. It is unusual to finish a conversationwithout a few juicy swear words)."Is that from the Spirit of God?"To the pastor, his responsibility is like a heavy crushing load. In addition he has been a thorn in theside of the Communist authorities for a long time now, and it seems they are out to get him and thewhole Church. In sheer desperation he locks himself in his church for hours on end."(God, only you can show us a way out of this".In the meantime after the failure of the psychiatric tests on the six seers, and the failure of the socalled "trip in the car", the militia have become more agressive. The seers are arrested,interrogated, released and placed under house arrest. Several soldiers guard each of their doorsand under no circumstances should any of the six be permitted to meet with the crowd gathered onthe mountain. However as the time of the apparition approaches they jump out of their windows,slip unter the stretched wires of the vinyards where the militia have difficulty following them, and aresoon at the place of apparition again. They are arrested and taken back to the police station wheretheir lives are threatened with revolvers."Don't think we carry guns as ornaments. You will not leave this place alive. We will shoot you downwith these".The six youths laugh mockingly at their captors and are released.The following day they return to the place of apparition. Their parents are arrested. Crowds ofpeople continue to stream there, ever increasing in number and always coming from further afield.Twice daily they pass the church of Medjugorje where padre Zovko prays alone.

The afternoon of June 30th."God I don't know what to do any more. Please give me a sign".Suddenly the priest hears a clear voice although here is nobody in the room."Go outside and protect the children".Obeying the command he leaves the prayer bench, opens the door and goes outside. He has onlytaken one step when all six seers fly at him like a swarm of bees. ,,Please hide us, we are beingchased by the soldiers". The pastor locks them in an empty room in the rectory and says:"You must stay quiet as church mice".The militia run past the house without suspecting anything, and padre Zovko stands guard outside.During this time Mary appears to the children in the rectory. Later they tell padre Zovko all that hashappened. Since Yugoslavian Communism allows a tolerable degree of freedom within the churchwalls, the pastor asks the Mother of God, through the children, if she could appear inside thechurch. The answer the next day is:"Very well I shall appear in the church" and instantaneously the word gets around.It is the second of July, the Feast of Mary's visitation. The three naved church of Medjugorje whichup to now has always been too large, is packed full, as is the area in the front of the church. PadreZovko leads in prayer with the Rosary, listens to confessions, preaches, and conducts the HolyMass. Is this still his parish? Instead of their normal indifference, the crowd is now extremelyattentive to all that is happening..Three days of fasting, no more swearingPadre Zovko allows the children to testify before the congregation by truthfully retelling theirexperiences. Little Jakov has to be put high up on the steps of the alter so everyone can see him.The people have tears in their eyes.Padre Zovko calls upon the crowd:"Will you agree we all fast for three days with nothing but bread and water, so the power of the evilspirits amongst us will be broken?" Everyone replies:"Yes we will agree to it".For three days not a single person smokes. No cooking is done, cafeterias do not sell meals, andthere are no visitors in the restaurants. The people mutually agree "Anyone who continues to swearmust pay penalty money into a common till", and the preceeds will later be taken to the priests. Theswearing soon stops.The crowds of people continue to increase and more priests are appearing all the time. Thebelievers are standing so tightly in the church that the receiving of Communion is only possible atthe end of the Holy mass. Before that nobody could move.The Gospa has asked for seven Lord's Prayers, the Hail Mary, the Glory be to the Father and theCredo. The seers lead the prayers daily, and then in addition, the whole rosary. Many sick peoplecome and ask the seers and the faithful to say a special prayer for them. Each day a padre gives ashort introduction regarding the appearances and the message of the Gospa. More and morepeople continue to arrive from ever further afield. Some come from the more remote corners ofYugoslavia, and many have travelled 60 to 80 kms on foot, even barefoot. There are Catholics,Orthodox and Moslems. Approximately 25 000 people are assembled for the feast of the Ascensionof Mary.The police allow cars to come only to within one or two kilometres of the church buildings and thiscreates a real atmosphere of prayer in the vicinity of the parish church.From this time on all of Medjugorje fasts each Friday with bread and water. Pilgrims returning homefrom the place of grace carry with them the renewed joy of prayer, and begin again their Christianlives with a new fervour and in a new spirit.Call for return and penanceThere are no gift shops in Medjugorje, no commercialism, nothing to divert people from prayer. Thepopulation is poor and leads a modest and content life. They understand and obey the call of theGospa as a call for return and penance. Up to October 1981, 500 000 people had visitedMedjugorje and 100 000 had attended confession. Above all it is the spirit of love and warmth thevisitor notices today. How many thousands of pilgrims have been fed and accommodated at nocharge? Nobody in Medjugorje takes money.Prohibitions, housesearch, defamation

On August 12th the authorities prohibit access to the mountain of the apparition. On the 17th theyarrest padre Zovko; they spend a full day searching the church and rectory. All money isconfiscated whether it be from contributions, collections at Mass, or is for housekeeping. The nunspresent in Medjugorje are subjected to a body search.Astonishingly the authorities return the money a short time later. It seems those who had seized ithad been tortured by nightmares. At about this time the media begins a flood of the vilest indefamation. It is directed against Medjugorje, Padre Zovko and the Bishop of Mostar. Howeverwhen the authorities realize this serves only to incite the curiosity of the people, and is in itself avehicle for propaganda, the reporting stops abruptly in September.Padre Zovko stayed in prison for two years and afterwards was transferred to another parish. Theeditors of a church magazine who have expressed their belief in the authenticity of the appearancesreceive eight and five year sentences.What is the message of the Mother of God?Conversion, faith, prayer, penance, reconciliation, forgiveness, peace."You should tell the faithful I need their prayers, the prayers of everyone. One should pray as muchas possible and do penance because too few have been converted. Many who call themselvesChristians still lead a pagan live".The call of the Gospa is urgent: "There are not enough converts. Return and be converted whilethere is still time".The Gospa speaks of many conflicts between people; between individuals, families, largercommunities, and even conflicts between states.Many people who call themselves Christians merely have their names entered into the baptismalregister and don't seem to remember what being a Christian means. There are others who still go tochurch, but do so without any real faith. AR must be converted. Many professed Christians havestopped praying altogether. They must realize the seven Lords Prayers, the Hail Mary, and theGlory be to the Father, are the minimum requirements of prayer. On top of this praying must bedone consciously and with the whole heart.The fact that fasting has completely disappeared from the Christian life represents a severe loss. Itshould be practised again. The Gospa explicitly recommends the Friday fast with nothing but breadand water.The priests are to be the guardians of the Faith, and their duty is to watch over the faith of thepeople."Do your duty well. Do what the Church demands of you. Through prayer one can achieveanything".On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th, the Gospa's appearance is one of deepseriousness rather than joy. She kneels down and prays with outstretched arms:"My most beloved Son, I beg of you forgive the world the grave sins with which it offends you so".For the future the Gospa promises a permanent visible and tangible sign on the mountain ofapparition as proof of the authenticity of her messages. What the sign is going to be, and when itwill appear is already known to the seers, but it is a secret which they are not allowed to reveal.Meanwhile other signs have been seen by many people on Krizevac mountain. A physical turning ofthe conrete cross, a figure of light depicting the outline of the Gospa, and a mysterious light or fireon the mountain which on several occasions has caused the authorities to call out the firedepartment. The fire officials see the light but are unable to offer any explanation.The signs which have appeared so far have been "for those who do not believe the Gopa". Themost impressive sign will come later, and it will be soon. The six seers will be entrusted with tensecrets, some of which are still to be revealed in future appearances. None of these secrets havebeen made public, and they are not even known to the Church authorities. So far every attempt toentice those already known from the seers, either by cunning or force, have failed. Even little Jakovhas resisted these efforts.The Gospa has asked that a feast known as "Mary Queen of Peace" be held on June 25th.Today except for the officials of the Communist Party, nobody doubts the genuineness of theapparitions in Medjugorje. People do not talk about it any more, they live her message. Conversion,reconciliation, joy of the heart, these are the new realities of life, and every visitor can take hold ofthem. There are many parish children to whom an hour of prayer previously seemed intolerable.They now pray easily for four hours.

During the daily apparitions, the Gospa spends much time with the seers in joint prayer. Theextraordinarily close communion of the six with their "Good Mother" is so heartfelt, one can hardlybelieve it. The Madonna calls them "andjeli moji" which means "my angels". The seers can literallydiscuss anything out of their young lives with her.The Gospa enters into everything. Little Jakov sometimes asks such childish questions that theothers look anxiously at the Madonna hoping she has not been offended. She does not takeoffence, she just smiles lovingly.

Permanent contact with the Gospa

If the seers from Sarajevo, Mostar and Medjugorje are separated, the Gospa appears to each oneindividually. When Ivan entered the boys training college he missed the others and often asked herabout them. She frequestly replied "My angels do their penance well".

One two occasions the Gospa has shown paradise to the seers, once when they were all togetherand once when Jakov and Vicka were by themselves. The two cousins were alone in a room. TheGospa appeared, took them by their hands, and "simply lead them into paradise". When one of theirmothers entered the room a few minutes later it was empty although it was impossible for them tohave left either through the window or door. Twenty minutes after their "disappearance" the childrenwere there again. Such things they have to tell. The depth of empathy they beheld between heavenand earth is almost impossible for earth bound mortals to understand.

Before the Gospa showed Hell to the seers, she asked whether they would agree to it or not. Fourdecided they would but two refused. The glimpses they received into the world beyond were for avery specific purpose:

"All of your efforts should be directed toward saving people from the torment beyond the grave, andthis through your prayer and penance".

At one time the Gospa asks the seers to fast with bread and water for a whole week. The childrenanswer:"We promise we will do it".

The Gospa replies by kissing the children on the forehead and saying "You are my angels".

Such familiarity.

Since the apparitions, the personalities of the. six have developed dramatically. This is theunanimous opinion of all who know them. Nothing in their young lives has really changed. They stillexperience the same difficulties and problems as before, they still bear the same crosses. Thosewho found learning hard before, find it just as hard after the apparitions. None of their school markshave improved. Once when the children demanded something special of her she said:

"You are impatient my angels".

Up to now countless people have asked questions of, and made requests to the Gospa through theseers, and on numerous occasions they have received detailed answers through the children.Sometimes the children had even forgotten the odd questions.

When one question was asked, and before the child had even finished asking it, the gospa said

"Tell the nun I understand her question. The fatally injured brother died in the grace, but he needsthe sacrarnent of Mass and prayer". On the question of restoring health to the sick the Gospa neveranswers with promises, rather shereplies with an exhortation to conversion, prayer and penance.The seers flee from cameras and have shunned publicity. With a patience that is hard tounderstand they continue to answer questions put to them by inquisitive people. Vicka for example

is sought after by about fifty people every day. She talks with them and answers their questions in afriendly warm hearted way, and all of this on top of her regular work in the house and in the fields.

Social intercourse with their peers is completely free and natural whether it be with boys or girls.When an elderly woman reproached them for that, Mirijana said "The Madonna has no time forhypocrites".

Every day the evening worship lasts up to three hours. When everything is finished, including theappearance of the apparition, the six go home with a crowd of young people their own age. Nobodycould pick them out of the crowd as being the favoured ones, indeed this is only possible when theyare seen from the front while praying. All young people from Medjugorje are pious.

Are there miracles in Medjugorje?

Up to the middle of 1982 in the parish of Medjugorje, 140 people were reported to have beenhealed through prayers granted, unfortunately most without the benefit of a medical certificate.Each time prayerful intercession is made on behalf of a sick person, the Mother of God would like tosee change for a better life, penance, and in particular, fasts with bread and water. Most of thesehearings take place slowly. Concerning the very sick the Gospa says:

"The laws of nature can also be made powerless through prayer, penance, fasts, and a firm faith".

The first two miracles of healing known to have happened in Medjugorje are here quoted literally:

(1)'I'he first person to be healed through the intercession of the Gospa was an old man called JozoVasilj. Eight years earlier the left side of his body had become paralyzed. He had lost he sight in hisleft eye, his left arm b came quite stiff and was completely convered with sores from the shoulder tothe palm of the hand. It had not shown any sign of healing all that time. He could only distinguishday from night with his right eye, and aftc four years became completely blind in that eye as wet Hewas totally dependent upon the help of others an, had to be lead everywhere.

When he heard about the apparitions on the mountains he said:

"I shall tell you if it is really the Gospa or not".

He asked a neighbour to bring him some soil and plants from the place of apparition. His friend didno want to cooperate at first, but after much persuasion he said he would. Jozo made a mixture withwater in a wash, bowl and washed his face with it. At the same time he prayed the Creed. Then hewashed himself with clean water, dried off with a towel, and said to his wife:

"You, old woman, I can see you". "Don't be silly, how could you see me. You've been blind for fouryears". "Aren't you ashamed of yourself, an old grandmother running about with no stockingson?"he answered.

Now she had to believe in the miracle. The joy was indescribable. Jozo then washed his left armfrom the shoulder down in the same muddy water, wrapped it in a towel, and repeated the prayingof the Creed. Next morning all the sores had disappeared without trace. The pastor concurs as tothe truth of this occurrence. Every one who knows him says that Jozo was always very pious. Nowoften when he cannot sleep at night he says the Rosary and the Litany.

"As long as I live shall not be able to thank the Lord enough".

(2) Shortly after the appearances had started, a small paralysed child by the name of Daniel (hewas about five or six years old) was taken there by his parents. They came from nearby Mostarafter the seers had recommended they visit the Gospa. She looked at the child for a full minute, andwithout stating any conditions simply said "The child will be healed", and he was healed.

Some people have been healed of mental disorders. Amongst them have been the psychiatrically illand some schizophrenics. Others have been freed from alcohol. The largest number of miracleshowever have been in the conversion of the heart, in the changing of lives, in the joining of the faith,and in the improvement of the lives of countless people rather than on the superficial level ofmaterialism and sensationalism.

If the confessional could talk, volume upon volume could be filled in no time at all. Many come toMedjugorje to bare their innermost beings and so be cleansed through confession. When thechurch is overcrowded confessions will be heard in the open. The priest will sit on a chair and theperson confession will kneel on the ground before him. It is not unusual for confessions to be heardin this manner all around the outside of the church. In the coldest weather many priests were sittingoutside for hours on end listening to confessions and it seemed a miracle in itself not one of themever caught a cold.

And what does the State say to this?

The State considers this whole affair as a direct threat to its authority, and has demonstrated it willresort to any tactic in order to quash it. So far they have used intimidation, threats, arrest, and evenovernight confinement in the local mortuary or mental hospital. As the "instigator of the apparitions"padre Zovko was originally sentenced to three and a half years in prison, but this was later reducedto a year and a half. For a long time access to the place of the appearances was prohibited. Theaccomodation of pilgrims which has always been provided by the population so willingly, andalways free of charge, has now been made almost impossible by bureaucratic red tape.

The authorities did not close the region completely, but special armed troops are suppose to beready for action in the surrounding mountains. Travellers are often harrassed in a worrying way, andfull buses are are sent back at any hint of the slightest indisretion.

Anyone who had been there three times would be expelled from the party at once.

"And how often have you been to the mountain comrade N.N.?"

Up to now I've been there nine times, so you'd better expel me from the party three times"

Further developments

On the 24th and 25th of June 1982, the anniversary of the first apparition, approximately 100000 people made the pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Many came on foot, and more than a few werebarefooted. Hundreds of priests were listening to confessions and the whole crowd consecratedthemselves to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Nowhere in the world could Mary's call from Fatimabe followed by such a crowd as it was in Medjugorje on that occasion.

Several times the Gospa was asked why the apparitions are so much more intimate and frequentcompared to those in Lourdes and Fatima. Answer:

"Because they are the last apparitions. In the future there will still be a few false appearances, butthis is the last time I will come to teach people. I will not come down to earth any more".

Are we indeed standing at the end of time? Here opinions differ. Nobody has the right to makepredictions about the future course of the world, but considering the arms race which has noparallel in history, and the unprecedented abandonment of the faith, it seems heaven is making a,last and most intensive" effort to rescue erring mankind. Is this to be wondered at? Would not Marybe a ,bad Mother" if she reelected her children in their time of extreme need?

The Holy Scripture speaks of the woman (Mary) who crushes the head of the snake (Satan or evil).Is it really so surprising she has started the final offensive today and that it will be Her who willfinally arrest the determined march of ungodliness and moral decline? Was it not predicted inFatima:

"In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph?"

Nobody knows the future, but anyone who impartially considers the events in Medjugorje mustadmit two things:

(1) Never before in history has there been such close and intimate contact between heaven andearth as is now happening in Communist Croatia, and(2) The demensions that this movement towards conversion will assume in the future, are totallyunknown.

The Gospa says our time is one of the "power of the devil" which "will soon be broken". It willhappen through "events quickly following one another". The big sign on the mountain of apparition(Crnica) will be there to be seen, but by then it will already be too late for many to convert.

"Today the devil tests every human being and the only way to resist this attack is with a strict 'No' toSatan. This 'No' is possible through prayer, sacrifice and atonement".

A question of univesal interest concerns the mercy of God. As a God of love, how could hecondemn anybody to eternal damnation? Is it not true that earthly courts only impose temporalsentences, even for serious crimes? Mirjana had put this question to the Gospa and the answer shereceived was this:

"People who go to Hell continue to deny the good and condemn themselves to staying there. Thereis no escape".

Other declarations by the Gospa about Purgatory and Hell are terrifyingly stark.

Concernig the relationship between people and priests, She observes that in Germany, Austria andSwitzerland people judge the Faith according to the way the priests live. If they fail people o notbelieve in god anymore. But does one go to church because of the priests? Of course not. Onegoes because of God. To Him one prays and listens.

Some of the terrible happenings revealed to the seers as part of the ten secrets can be mitigatedthrough fervent prayer, but the other part cannot. The absolute refusal by many people to acceptthe fact of their ungodliness permits no other possibility.

Since there is no escape from these terrible events, the Gospa gives exact instructions as to howpeople must prepare themselves for when they happen. This is not through panic or fear but byplacing themselves completely at the mercy of God.

"Convert whilst here is still time to do so. You can lose everything, but you cannot lose God" It is thepriests responsibility to help people find God.The greatest dangers come from the lack of godliness.This is most strongly evident in Germany. Because of the acute danger facing world peace theGospa calls herself "The Queen of Peace". This means she mediates the peace of Christ to all whohear her voice and fulfil her requests. Peace has to start in the hearts of men before there can beany peace between states. This is only possible through faith, devotion to God, prayer, penanceand fasting. Because mankind is so evil, the terrible events of the future are just around the corner.Today there are so many false prophets about.

The depressingly bitter words written above have not yet received the approval of the Church andare therefore still beyond the authority of its proclamation. If they possess any authority at all the

reader must recognize it for himself as they are considered in the light of present worldy realities. Isour world not riddled with atomic weapons? Isn't our modern prosperous society further away fromChrist than ever before in history? Hasn't ungodliness become the main evil of the 20th century?The readers may answer these questions for himself and then consider the words of Mary.

The spreading of the apparitions and their consequences

Recently so called "pareallel appearances" occurred in Herzegowina. New apparitions occurred inseveral places and inluded appearances before more children. As a consequence the Church isfaced by yet another difficult task: Namely to consider whether Medjugorje is being imitated,whether the devil is behind it, or if indeed Mary makes multiple appearances possibly to show theCommunist state that whilst it can lock up the seers and their ministers, it cannot imprison theapparition.

The most interesting apparitions may have been those experienced by the eleven year old schoolgirl Jelena (in this short report we will disregard all others). Jelena who also comes fromMedjugorje, hears the voice of Mary from within herself. The source of the apparitions sheexperiences are also from within and they do not appear externally. The message propagatedthrough her, consist of urgent calls for the conversion of the whole world. "My heart is burning foryou. Conversion. Only conversion. Say this to everyone, to all my children, all my children".

"You know nothing of God's plans, nothing of what he will send or do. I ask only that you will convertyourselves. Be prepared for everything that is coming, but most important of all convert yourselves.Renounce everything because that is part of conversion".

With her request for fasts the Gospa said:

"Fasting is not enough on its own; bad habits must be renounced as well. Fasting is worthless if yousin at the same time."

Examples of bad habits are taking exessive amounts of coffee and alcohol, watching television, andsmoking.

The Holy Mass is reconciliation with God through a bloodless sacrifice offered by the priest in thename of and upon the instruction of Jesus. The faithful should prepare themselves spiritually half anhour before the Mass so as to be fully receptive.

Following Good Friday a second eleven year old and a five year old girl see the Gospa in the sameway as Jelena, but without being able to hear her voice. Jelena is normal child but pious andserious in nature. Some of the things she has said go well beyond the bounds of understanding of anormal eleven year old. She is extraordinarily modest.

Through Jelena the Gospa expressed the wish for a group of volunteers who will be completelydedicated to the service of Jesus and herself. By the summer of 1983 this group already numbered60 people. Most of them were young.

They observe the following rules:

(1) to renounce all passion and unworthy desires, especially bad television programs and andeedtelevision in general. This includes smoking, alcohol, excessive use of drinks and food, andexcessive sport.

(2) To surrender totally to God.

(3) To give up all fear once and for all. There is no place for fear in the heart of one who giveshimself completely to God. Difficulties will always exist, but they will serve to promote spiritualgrowth and turn out to be for the Glory of God.

(4) To begin to love their enemies, to harbour no hate, bitterness or condemnation in their hearts,but only love and forgiveness. To pray for their enemies and call down the blessing o God uponthem.

(5) To fast twice a week with bread and water, and to meet in a group once a week.

(6) to devote at least three hours daily to prayer in which the Rosary and Holy Mass are included.

In addition the Gospa also gave the following advice:

"Try not to worry too much about earthly matters for a lack of inner peace is not conducive toprayer. If we stand first for God He will supply our earthly needs and all will be well".

"To extend the spirit of prayer into daily work, and to accompany work with prayer".

"Pray, pray, pray. Through prayer you can achieve everything".

(7) Be cautious regarding the devil. He watches all those who have decided to consecratethemselves to God. They will also be examined by him. He will try to convince them they pray toomuch, that they fast too much, that they should be like other young people and follow the ways ofpleasure. Rather than obeying the devil they should pay attention to the Gospa's voice. Oncesecure in their faith the devil will no longer be able to harm them.

The Gospa seems to watch over the group in a special way. Lately her principle exhortation to themhas been "Become absorbed in your prayer life".

One gets the impression today the Gospa goes for all or nothing. It is as if she is encouragingpeople to put themselves totally at her disposal; to be Saints.

A minister of Medjugorje said in the summer of 1983 he suspects that from the group of 60dedicated youths, the Gospa is training a special religious order and a number of missionaries forfuture work in ex Yugoslavia. The time seems to have run out when God will tolerate half heartedservice by those supposedly consecrated to Him. In 1983 in a letter to their Bishop, the ministers ofMedjugorje said many people had completely renounced alcohol, nicotine, the entertainmentprograms and other pleasures. Many fast several times a week with bread and water, and nearly allmeet monthly for reconciliation, penance and confession. Daily prayer is undertaken in deepestcomposure.

One of the most important things to have happened has been the reconciliation of people andclasses where there used to be tension and rejection. Here one really feels the fresh wave of prayerand penance which today we look for in vain in leading ecclesiastical institutions.

On the 24th and 25th of June 1983, the second anniversary, there were 150 000 pilgrims inMedjugorje. They were surrounded and observed by fully equipped special troops of the army whowere stationed in the surrounding mountains. The pilgrims prayed all through the

night and their confessions lasted several hours. The message delivered by the apparition at thistimes was: "Convert yourselves. All I want to say to you ist convert yourselves. Tell this to all mychildren as quickly as possible, to all my children, convert yourselves".

In July 1983 padre Josef Zovko, the pastor during the historic days, was transferred fromMedjugorje to the most remote diocese in the province, the out of the way village of Bijakovicinear.Duvno, as a chaplain.

Here are a few words from padre Zovko spoken during a sermon in Medjugorje after his releasefrom prison: "It is an illusion to defend peace with weapons alone. That is always a deceptive andartificial peace. The real peace springs from the heart which has turned to God. Wars are won withprayer. Israel's victory was dependent upon the raised arms of Moses who prayed for his people.As long as his arms were raised the people won, but when he let his arms drop his people weredefeated. There are many examples in history where weaker armies, reinforced through a multitudeof prayers, were victorious over much stronger enemies."

Miracles and conversions are witness to the authenticity

From Medjugorje and its surroundings many miracles have been reported which happened eithersuddenly or gradually. In the book written by Dr. Rupcic, fifty two are briefly described. Here weshall consider two of the most recent reports cited in Mr. Ljubic’s book. They are characteristic ofthe works of the Mother of God in Medjugorje.

A sudden conversion

A pastor from the outskirts of Zagreb reports on a man from his parish who had been known as anatheist for a long time. As an active atheist he had raised his children without God. Neither he norhis family ever came to church. End of 1982 he became ill with cancer, without any hope of beingcured and several of the faithful tried to persuade him to attend confession. He rejected all attemptswith determination. Many from his parish who had made the pilgrimage to Medjugorje prayed forhim while there and also when they returned home. At another time they made a specialintercession to the Gospa through one of the seers. The following events took place shortly after.They are confirmed by his relatives:

The third of March 1983 was a Thursday.

After he had his lunch in bed, his wife took the dishes into the kitchen. He turned over in bed to theother side and suddenly saw the figure of the Mother of God on the wall. She appeared from thewaist to the head and was visible for about a minute. She looked at him, smiled, and said nothing.He was fully conscious, totally aware, and somewhat shocked. He gazed at her with wrapt attention.He had never before in all his life beheld such beauty. The Gospa looked at him with penetratingeyes. Her head was slightly inclined to one side. After the apparition he cried. He told no one abouthis experience.

The following day he told his wife and several others what had happened and said he wanted toconfess. The pastor came, he confessed and received Holy Communion. Now he prays a lot, heexperiences an inner peace and often attends Holy Communion. He swears that if God gave hishealth back to him now he would never again miss the Holy Mass on Sundays.

Ten days after his conversion a few acquaintances visited him. The sick man gave a detailed reportof his illness and the operation which he had endured, and then related specifically the experienceof his conversion. At the same time he pointed out the place on the wall where he had seen theGospa. He declared he would not be prevented from speaking about it by anybody in the world.Sometimes when his illness becomes unbearable he asks others in the house to pray together withhim.

Immediately after his conversion he returned his party membership card. After having read the bookabout Medjugorje he asked his son to visit there with a group of people. The son later reported thattogether with other pilgrims, he had seen the miracle sign on the cross on Krizevac mountain. The

conversion of the sick man has become widely known and he is now visited by many people. Hetells them about God and the Gospa.

Healed from multiple sclerosis

In the bulletin of the diocese of Split, August 1984, pages 10-1 1, the following healing miracle isreported under the title "Something further about Medjugorje". On August 13th a group of about 30pilgrims from Milano and Pavia visited the archbishop on their return journey from Medjugorje.Amongst them were five university professors. On this occasion they also met with the Bishop ofMostar, Mr Pavao Zanic. They gave him a report of this miracle which had occurred in the church atMedjugorje.

An Italian woman who had been left completely blind and lame from multiple sclerosis suddenlybecame healthy again. She was again able to walk and the sight returned in her right eye.Physicians have given the Bishop of Mostar proper medical documentation describing the woman'scondition before and after recovery, and it is hoped this will go some way towards establishing asscientific fact the nature of the miracles. Apart from this miracle, the details of which are irrefutable,other amazing events of a similar nature have taken place which could not have occurred inaccordance with any known natural law. Many have been scientifically documented by physiciansand their veracity is beyond question.

Of course it is true the truth of these miraculous happenings cannot be established by logicalargument alone. For this reason it is necessary not only to use ones power of reasoning, but also tobe willing to accept a miracle. This is a miracle and is what appears to have happened inMedjugorje. We all know how the Pharisees accredited the miracles of Jesus to the devil.

Some people have been offended the Mother of God appeared daily in Medjugorje over the years.She once said she is grateful to the local parish she was received with so much affection and notrejected as in other places. Perhaps this is one reason she has continued to appear there dailythrough the years.

A few messages of the Gospa in the year 1984

Through the seer Marija, the Mother of God announced the following messages:

12/7/84: My dear children, at this time Satan wants to frustrate my plans. Pray that he does notsucceed. I shall ask my Divine Son that you resist these trials.

11/8/84: Dear children, pray. Satan further tries to hinder my plans. Pray with all your heart and joinyourself with Jesus in prayer.

End of August 1984: The Gospa asks them to pray and sacrifice as much as possible before herSon's cross.

In September 1984: Do not fast with an ill will, against the will, or for any other reason but love. Bethankful to God's kindness I am able to come to you for such a long time.

I would like to report the overall impression of Medjugorje as overpowering. Why? Because thefaith, piety, and warm heartedness of the population comes to us sophisticated mid Europeans as asevere shock. I have celebrated Holy Mass four times and distributed communion as well. I haveseen the faces of the celebrants close up and all are so deeply lost in prayer one is left speechless.

Above all one is surprised by the number of young people, boys and girls, and men who take part.At home the life of the church is most often supported only by the women and the elderly, but here

every strata of the population is represented. I have been overwhelmed by the crowds of pious menin their 30's and 40's, by the pretty young girls in western dress, and the dashing young men. Thosewho in our towns "live" in the discotheque are here happy to spend three hours daily in the churchwithout any sign of boredom. They listen to the padres preach daily for about half an hour, and allthis in a Communist country where every youth knows going to church could cost him his job.

When the crowds arrive late in the afternoon, and the church has filled up, the padre talks aboutconversion and the practical aspects of confession. He asks each person to search his or herconscience and to recognize their sins. The people are then sent outside where other priests arewaiting to hear confession.

When I saw this I could hardly believe my eyes. There sitting on ten chairs under trees, in the field,in the meadow, and along the wall of the church, were ten priests. In front of each priest was asmall queue of people. Each person in the queue was just far enough from the one in front sonobody could understand what the others were saying. One after another they went forward, kneltdown before the priest, whispered, the priest spoke with them, gave absolution, made the sign ofthe cross, and then went on to the next.

On Sunday up to 300 people may have been to confession, on working days the number was less,but there were fewer priests also. We two Austrian priests were also appointed, but those speakingGerman who arrived by bus avoided us. They were not Croatian and did not go to confession.

Herzegowina has always been a deeply religious region, and it has only been in recent years the socalled 9 9new morality" has made any impact in Medjugorje. Men drinking in the pub, young peoplein the discotheque, television, materialism, antisocial tensions, hate, envy, adultery and so on. Fourdays before the apparitions started the discotheque was burned down after a lightning strike. Thedebris was still smoking when the first apparition occurred. The young people saw this as a signfrom heaven and transferred their nightly meetings to the church. Today alcoholism, adultery, andanti social hostility are no longer problems in Medjugorje. The people have found God and arecontent.

To me as a mid-European, it is obvious that this startling and unbelievable mass conversion has tobe attributed in no small part to the outstanding pastoral ministry exercised by the Franciscans whoput themselves totally at the disposal of the people as they channelled the movement through theoffices of the Church. As one priest said "We must believe what the Mother of God says", said onepriest, "There is no other way".

Certainly this mass movement of the conversion of souls could not have been achieved by theChurch without the intervention of some higher authority. My feeling is that this speaks for theauthenticity of the apparitions.

We could not talk with the seers because of language difficulties. Nevertheless they helped medaily to change into and out of my vestments. Perhaps my eyes spoke. Marija who helped me everyday, seemed to recognize my helplessness and my desire to communicate. Her concern wasconveyed through looks and gestures. I believe she was showing me in a loving way she was sorryfor me. But one thing is certain about this child, she has a charisma which I have never before seenin my life in anyone of the same age.

Such a charismatic calling imposes burdens upon the young, which outsider cannot imagine. Apartfrom their daily work in the fields and the house, and their school work, they are also involved in thethree hour long divine service every evening. They spend several minutes in communion with theapparition and this is followed by a tremendous rush of people into the church. In my parish athome such a crowd occurs only two or three times a year at the most, and when compared withhere it makes me irritated and disillusioned.

For these youths, all of whom are kind, friendly and normal, these services have been continuingevening after evening for the past two years.

After 13 years of school teaching and doing youth work. How quickly young people tend to imitatethe behaviour of media celebrities! These youth stayed normal, or disappointingly normal as onepadre put it. They demonstrated not a trace of pride.Many people including some priests, come to amuse themselves at the expense of the apparition,while others attend out of great scepticism or for sheer sensationalism. The seers very quicklyrecognize the motives of each individual and respond accordingly. To the pilgrims who are on agenuine religious search they minister with love and patience, from the others they withdraw.For me the second proof of the authenticity of these events lies in the seers themselves. Their purityof soul, their simplicity, and the glow they radiate is something which I find difficult to put into words.It seems the hand of God is visible, not so much in the apparitions themselves as in their effects.One could argue from the Holy Scripture "By their fruits you shall know them".The fruits of Medjugorje are good for we have witnessed the successful conversion of manythousands of people. To think of this happening in Austria represents wishful thinking and isprobably unrealistic, at least up to now. We know this religious awakening has spread to all theprovinces of ex Yugoslavia, and this includes Slovenia which is on the Austrian border. I pray toGod it does not stop there.I came here out of curiosity, and if I am honest with myself, secretly hoping to come into contactwith the supernatural. But I saw something different.Back home the continuing decline of the number of young people at Divine Service seems to becreating a church which caters only to women children and older people. Although it's not entirelythat way in my own parish just yet, I can see it heading in that direction and this makes me ponderthe situation very deeply.There have always been those who are strong in the faith, and have remained so, but I havebelieved many others to be virtually incapable of conversion. when I considered the possibility ofreligious reawakening it seemed that belief was necessarily limited to sacrifice groups such as theFockolarini, or to the Charismatic movement.Here my faith has been reaffirmed. When I saw the church filled with such a crush of people most ofwhom were between 20 and 50 years of age, I could hardly believe it. I have seen this happen nowfor eight evenings in a row and for three hours on each occasion, and my belief in mankind hasbeen restored.That has been my gift from Medjugorje. Even if I do not know how to transpose this phenomenonfrom Herzegowina to Austria, I believe again that people, indeed all people, are capable of deepreligious experience. Presumably the recipe for success belongs solely to the Mother of God inunion with Divine Grace.Pastor Werner Schur, Kartisch(This part of the report is taken from the east Tirol newspaper).Pilgrimages to MedjugorjeIn different publications false reports concerning the supposed prohibition of pilgrimages toMedjugorje have been published. It therefore seems necessary for us to clarify the situation in thisbooklet and what follows could be considered a practical guideline.A declaration on October 12th 1984 issued by the Bishops of ex Yugoslavia states:"The Bishops have considered the occurrences in Herzegowina/Medjugorje and an appraisal of thesignificance of those events will only be possible after they have been subjected to a thorough andexpert examination. This is the exclusive duty of the appropriate Church authorities and until thenno officially sanctioned pilgrimages to Medjugorje can be organised. We would not prejudge theverdict of those responsible for the ecclesiastical life".(AKSA, Nr 42 (753) of the 19110 1984, S. 2)It follows from this that pilgrimages to Medjugorje may not be officially organised by ecclesiasticalorganisations or persons thus preventing the impression the church has already pronounced apositive judgement regarding the alleged appearances of Mary at Medjugorje.It does not follow however that pilgrimages to Medjugorje cannot take place. In answer to readersquestions the Croations Catholic Newspaper of Yugoslavia, "Glas Koncila" states in its editorial:"...we do not believe it is right for the Bishop to prohibit pilgrimages to Medjugorje. Every faithful

church goer obviously has the right, whether accompanied or alone, to visit any church in the worldwhich attracts him for reasons of faith or as a source of spiritual activity. But it is true that the Bishopis obliged to inform the faithful that so far no ecclesiastical judgement about the events inMedjugorje exist and for that reason such pilgrimages cannot be officially made. It follows that nopriest can conduct a pilgrimage to Medjugorje as he would to Lourdes or Fatima".(Glas Koncila, Nr 2711984, S. 8 of November ]8th 1984)Simply stated it means that church organised pilgrimages will only be possible when theecclesiastical examining body has reached a positive judgement. It is however possible to engagein private unofficial pilgrimages right now.
