Ara Malikian & Fernando Egozcue quintetCon los ojos cerrados... perfectly fuse classic music with elements of jazz and a strong influence of the new Argentinian tango.

I n 2007 they began this project with the CD “Lejos” (Warner Music) presen-ted at the Temple of Debod in Madrid

within the programme of the Festival “Los Veranos de la Villa”. They have performed innumerable concerts by all the country with a entusiastic public and ready to enjoy on their encounter. is the evidence of how two different cul-tures express themselves using dispara-te styles, enabling them to demonstrate their energies subtly and distinctly. Ara Malikian, a 38-year-old Armenian/Leba-nese, whose musical talent might never measure across the limitation “space/time “, puts all his exotic and captivating creativity and certainly the necessary sauciness to go out in a premeditated way from these stabilised forms, at the disposal of the incredible emotion and value of Fernando Egozcue’s composi-tions from Argentina.

Line upThe quality, presence and personali-

ty of Ara Malikian, unique artist able to understand the music at a glance, gives Egozcue’s music the depth and sense which deserves; melodies in his violin transform into words, in a personal and passion speech. Have a lot to do with this Moisés P. Sánchez, probably the best jazz pianist in Spain nowadays, who oozes creativity, professionalism and good deeds with every step. He is pianist, arranger and composer, the life of Moisés have been impregnated of mu-sic from the very beginning thanks to the

atmosphere that his parents gave to him. At the age of three he began to play the piano and to know the mys-teries the harmony and the solfège of the hand of his father, who teach him a great musical culture including all the styles and influences. This pecu-liar way to met and to study music has ended a unique and particular style in the way to conceive the ins-trument and music in himself, being able to adopt a very ample point of view with respect to the improvisa-tion, the adjustments or the harmony.

With only 17 years, he was member of the group of Chema Vílchez. He re-ceived classes from great jazz masters like Jean Michel Pilc, John Taylor or Kenny Werner and also form the classic piano like Joaquín Achúcarro.

Miguel Rodrigáñez, refine and ele-gant double-bass player who combines a polished classic bow with the presence and rhythmic of folk music and Mar-tin Bruhn, multifaceted and exquisite percussionist who joins the music with the most natural thing. They provide the rhythmic consistence and the harmonic strength needed to make us enjoy a mu-sic with a much defined personal style, strong and with no concessions.

Sala Clamores. Photo taken in one from his first presentations in Outcries, where they have become one of the asked for groups more.

Bravery, an interpreted truth carried to its logical conclusion, not withholding anything to itself while expressed through it’s instruments, is what stimulates the listener to the notion of reality so deep from which, without doubt, one out of indifference.

The Egozcue`s music, with Argentine roots and intensely touching, it is conceived like chamber music, with a fort and flowed rythmical development. Their classic formation and the influence of jazz and contemporary musics are combined to open the way to the passion and expressive force of an authentic, true, captivating music….Their MusicThe instrumentation as a quintet and the contrasted quality of the musicians who form it, contributes to the rythmical con-sistency and harmonic solidity necessary to make us enjoy a music with a person-al style, very defined, solid and without concessions.

Possessor of his own style, forged from

his origins and rich musical experienc-es, his violin raises like one of the most original and innovating voices in the in-ternational musical panorama. Collabo-rating with Fernando Egozcue during more than 15 years, they fuse their talent to present a new project based on works of the composer and Argentine guitarist.

Touring Spain since their album presen-tation at the Coliseum theatre in Feb-ruary 2011, their artistic proposal has become a great success with impressive critics from public and specializated press from festivals and theaters where they have palyed. Due to the character-istics of “Con los ojos cerrados…”, this

proposal suites perfectly in the programming of jazz and world music festivals or even classic festivals contribuiting with a fresh and different repertoire.

La Antigua . Concert at the XXVIII Festival de la Antigua in Zumárraga in the incomparable hermitage sold out for the occasion

Born in Lebanon in 1968 to an Ar-menian family, Ara Malikian began stu-dying the violin at a very early age with his father. His talent was recognized and nurtured despite the difficulties encounte-red because of the war, forcing him to stu-dy during long periods of time in air-raid shelters. He gave his first serious concert at the age of 12 and when he was 14, he obtained a scholarship from the German Culture Ministry to study at the Hochs-chule für Musik und Theater in Hanno-ver. At 15, he was the youngest pupil to be admitted in this prestigious centre. He later furthered his studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London and studied with renowned professors such as Franco Gulli, Ruggiero Ricci, Ivry Gitlis, Herman Krebbers and members of the Al-ban Berg Quartet.

TrayectoryAn undiminishing musical and human

restlessness have led Ara to deepen his relationship with his own Armenian roots and to assimilate music of other cultures, like those of the Middle East (Arab and

Jewish), Central Europe (Gypsy and Klez-mer), Argentina (Tango) and Spain (Fla-menco). All this is achieved within a per-sonal language in which the rhythmic and emotional strength of these types of music go hand in hand with the virtuosity and ex-pressiveness of the great European classical tradition.

With a wide-ranging repertoire that in-cludes a majority of the important pieces written for violin (concertos with orchestra, sonatas and pieces with piano and cham-ber music), he has also premiered works by modern composers such as Franco Da-natoni, Malcolm Lipkin, Luciano Chailly, Ladislav Kupkovich, Loris Tjeknavorian,

Lawrence Roman and Yervand Yernakian. Ma-likian is also one of the few violinists who plays recitals for solo violin with programs featuring complete cycles of such as the 24 Paganini Ca-prices, the 6 sonatas of Eugene Ysaÿe and the sonatas and partitas of Bach.

Premios obtenidosMalikian has been recognized in may com-

petitions of worldwide reputation, including first prizes at the International Competitions “Felix Mendelssohn” (1987, Berlin, Germany) and “Pablo Sarasate” (1995, Pamplona, Spain). In addition, “Zino Francescatti”(Marseille, Fran-ce), “Rodolfo Lipizer” (Gorizia, Italy), Jeunes-ses Musicales” (Belgrade, Serbia), “Rameau” (Le Mans, France), “International Artists Guild” (New York, USA) and the “International Music Competition of Japan”. In 1993 he received the “Prize for Artistic Devotion and Achievement” from the German Ministry of Culture.

Malikian has performed in the most impor-tant concert halls of the world in more than 40 countries on five continents: New York (Carne-gie Hall), Paris (Salle Pleyel), Vienna (Musikve-rein), Toronto (Ford Centre), Madrid (Auditorio Nacional and Teatro Real), Venice, Los Ange-les, Taipei, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Cuba, Barcelona, Bilbao and many more. He has also participated in festivals at Aspen, Colamar, Pra-des, Schleswig-Holstein, Braunschweig, San Se-bastian, Segovia, Bergen, Freden, Metlach and Prague.

Malikian has worked with figures such as Joaquín Cortés and Belén Maya, film composers such as Pascal Gainge and Alberto Iglesias with whom he recorded the soundtrack for “Talk to her”, the Academy Award winning movie by Pe-dro Almodóvar.

VÍDEOS 2011

“Ruegos y Preguntas” - Teatro Arteria Coliseum

The quality, presence and personality of Ara Malikian, unique artist able to understand the music at a glance, gives Egozcue’s music the depth and sense which deserves; melodies in his violin transform into words, in a personal and passion speech.

“Manu” - Club Pizzicato TVE 2

“Manu” is the title of this brillant piece dedicated to the son of Fernando. Ara Malikian usually remember in his concerts with the great sense of humor that the song was composed by Fernando before having his son, so probably this is the first son dedicated to a “piece” in the history of music.

“Creo” - Festival Musikaire

This composition habitually open their concerts. We could try to explain it with more words, or to fall in the error to translate this music to the general understanding, but it is not possible, like it is not possible to explain the nature of many things. This music is to live it, to listen it without fear.

New Album premiere

“Viejos Aires”, during the presentation of their new disc in a sold out Theater Coliseum in Madrid. It is one of the most important Fernando Egozcue´s composition from his first collaboration with Ara in 2007. This piece use to close their concerts. Of course this is nothing in comparation with attend their live performances but in the video we can ap-preciate the interpretative quality of all the mem-bers of the group, standing out especially the great sensibility and energy that Ara put in each note.

“White-glove virtuosos”

These virtuosos invite you to open your ears and let you go. The ovations demonstrated last night that the adventure is worthy

Agosip was heard in the access stalls: “Only there is something more dangerous than a virtuoso.

Two virtuosos”. The Buenosairean gui-tarist Fernando Egozcue and the violinist Armenian-Lebanese Ara Malikian are a good example, without a doubt. we can relax and just enjoy the show. Spite of the technical complexity of this reper-toire - beginning with that inaugural of semifusas, just to explain it we would run out of ink the printer- it is not exhi-bitionist, but playful and exciting. Relax a be yourself, there is not need to have a degree in music to enjoy this music, with the torrent of vertigos and melodies that these two gents incarnate.

The concertAra and Fernando constitute a deli-

cious peculiarity in the horizon of this city, the unexpected intersection of two distant geographies that come together in Spain with the capacity to laminate distances, and maybe because of that their music still is more prodigious. Ana Botella would desire to fine them if she met them in the street but, fortunately, the magical sorcery of Egozcue and Ma-likian is no longer only a secret for initia-tes. More than 1,300 people applauded them last night in the Coliseum Theater, now Coliseum Arteria

Egozcue, author of all the scores, play with angelical elegance and lifts his gui-tar until verticality, but he is shy in com-parison with Malikian, pure spectacle

that assumes a role and theatricality from the feet to the last one of its many curls. It outside appears with the shirt by and some red trousers of explorer, a so self-assured aspect that we do not know if comes to spend the day in the encamped commune or one mountain one. But it always gives the sensation of being able to touch without effort any mischief that some feverish mind - be called Paganini, Sarasate or, clearly, Egozcue- guesses right to spill on a staff.

Between the foreign accent and its ar-chness, Malikian is in addition, a great speaker. But the true enchantment of this man is his sense of humour “We are going to play one of our new pieces. The clasic musicians would say that it is a world-wide premiere”, he said befo-

re interpreting “Cuidado con el perro” (Beware with the dog), a magnificent exponent of the second album of the quintet (With the closed eyes, published this week). A delicious piece with a pro-longed piano solo, in which Moisés Sán-chez did not remain very far from Keith Jarrett.

The Buenosairean guitarist follows the stylistic coordinates that already had with Ensamble Nuevo Tango: the revo-lutionary argentinidad of Piazzolla and the contemporary melodic jazz of Pat Metheny or, better still, Ralph Towner with Oregon. He plays numerous broken compasses and diabolical phrases in or-der to get Ara continues mistreating his violin arc without mercy. But also he is able to calm themselves in “Saudade” or to contribute in “El Boteyazo” (the compositions, definitively, are very su-periors to it´s titles) a concise and gor-geous central reason. In the end, these white glove virtuosos invite you to open your ears and let you go. The ovations demonstrated last night that the adven-ture is worthy.

Opinión

Great sucess. There is no better form to describe the starting as XXVIII the edition of the Music Zumarraga Festi-val. The concert finished one hour ago

I have just sit down to write and my shoulders and my head still move while humming some of his music. It was one of those recitals that distill force, complicity and good feelings. What to say at this point of the versatile Ara Malikian? Soon you find him as concertino of the classic OSM and the next day fooling the clasic music in Pagagnini, participating in a program for children or playing from Bach to Stockhausen or through musics of diverse cultures. And it never defrauds.

In this project that he presented with Egozcue and three great musicians he were fantastic one more time. I do not know how many kilos he loses by concert, but the gymnastics that he pratic while playing must leave him nackered. Jumps, convul-sions, dances, turns. And the best thing of all is that it doesn´t matter the position he adopts. He always play well. He never go out of tune even if the piece is difficult. In addition it wastes neat-ness, expressivity and a lot of energy. And there is more, because is not only about playing violin. The self-confidence, humor and irony that unfol-ded to present each work captivated the audience since the beginning.

Follow them because it is worthy and do not miss they live concerts

Without a doubt, he was the center of attention of a great quality formation. Egozcue, feeling and passion in the guitar, were the best vehicle to ex-press with nobility his compositions, a fusion of styles that turn around jazz and tango with sincere music with energetic climax. The pianist was shy in the begginig, but when he appears it was swee-ping with an unforgettable piano improvisation. Also were brillant the expressive percussionist and a contrabass always in his place.

Follow them because it is worthy and do not miss they live concerts.

“People still need the music”The Lebanese violinist Ara Malikian and the Argentine guitarist Fernando Egozcue interpreted yesterday the songs of its disc Lejos in Madrid.

They met fifteen years ago in a park, while they took to his dogs for a walk. The Lebanese violinist with

a great Danish in the hand; the guita-rist and Argentine composer, with chi-huahua. “The dogs began to embroil and we start playing. To play music, I mean”. Or perhaps they met in an elevator in London, and in the short trip between the floor twenty and the ground floor they become friends and arrange some song. The violinist is Ara Malikian; the guitarist, Fernando Egozcue. The Sala Clamores was packed yesterday. The team was completed with the Argenti-nans Martín Bruhn (battery) and Nicolás Quintela (contrabass) and with the Spa-nish Moisés P. Sánchez (piano), the play “Lejos” (Far), the first disc of this pair music mosnters that already have a suc-cessful career.

The concertAra jumps, shakes the head and dan-

ces at the scene while he plays the violin, like a rockstar; he is pure energy, a music torrent that never stay quiet. Fernando, in the other hand, is a quiet man: from his chair he dominates the guitar as a marionette, with the tranquillity that he has an absolute control over the instru-ment and its possibilities. They are as di-fferent as good friends and together they are able to create a hypnotic sound, full

of force and sometimes with a touch of avant-garde (Like in the improvisations with piano of Moisés P. Sánchez or the spectacular closing of the show, with the piece “Carne Cruda” ), where they fuse different sounds and styles like tan-go, the Balkan folklore, flamenco, jazz, boogie or rock, with the elegance and the style of a symphonic band and the power and freshness of a big band.

Throughout the spectacle the vio-lin, the guitar and the piano speak each other, they asked and got the response, doubling the melodies like a choir; some times shouting and discussing in fierce counterpoints; others dancing embraced, like two lovers that have just met. The-re is no voice in these songs because he would be superfluous: the cords sing s

when musicians like them plays. And, as if they were columns of a cathedral built with chords, the contrabass and the ba-ttery maintains and raises this sonorous artifice: they hit until the KO where it is necessary, and when is required they ca-ress, whisper and accompany. The result is lyrical and suggestive spectacle full of shades, in which you travel from the as-tonishment to the wonder to ending let-ting yourself go completely at the mercy of the music of Malikian and Egozcue.

Finished the concert Fernando ap-proaches to the table smiling, satisfied by the result of the night. He gives a drink of his beer, sit down and, while we waited for Ara Malikian (that it goes from one place to the other as fast as a squirrel, saluting somebody or signing a disc), we spoke on his relation with the brilliant Lebanese violinist and how it began to forge it “Lejos”

They are not that good, they are brillant, two virtuosos who are able to suppress the rictus that

causes that classic music do not connect with many public. The versatile violi-nist Armenian-Lebanese Ara Malikian and the prestigious Buenosairean guita-rist Fernando Egozcue has signed their second work in common, Con,oos jos cerrados.. (With the eyes closed), a mar-velous work that today will present with their quintet at the Alcazar de San Juán.

Own styleFrom POP music to the jazz, with-

out forgetting classic music and with a powerful presence of the tango, Con los ojos cerrados… fuse a priori distant essences, styles and geographies are combined with complicity and efferves-cence. Composed by Egozcue “thinking about each” of the members of the quin-tet – Moisés Sánchez pianist, Miguel Rodríguez double-bass and the percus-sionist Martin Bruhn-, it is a work “made to a measure”, said Malikian, the music of the Buenosairean composer is “won-derful”, an invitation “to let yourself go” and enjoy.

The programme include pieces that “arrives very directly, it touches the soul and the heart”, affirm the violinist, that assure that in their live shows the vir-tuosity is combined with a great energy that is transmited to the public and get to the scene. “We are very emotional while playing and the same feels the public who leaves the venue with a smile. It´s almost two hours of joy and happinnes”, said Malikian.

Although the violin shines espe-cially, “all the instruments are impor-tant” in this work of a group that has the particularitity that each musician “comes from different worlds : Moisés Sánchez comes from the jazz, Martín Bruhn from rock, Egozcue with influ-ences of the world of tango and Latin American music…”, said Malikian, which trajectory comes from classic music. “Each of us contributes with his style and we make a sort of dialogue between us. We always spend a great time playing together and tried to trans-mit that connection to the public”, af-firm the violinist, that recognizes the component of latent classic music in a musical project that, in the other hand, shows the violin in “another less well-known facet” and in wich, he thinks ,that the audience will enjoy.

The expressive and stimulating vio-lin of Malikian is associated with the angelical touch of Egozcue in a music that the Armenian-Lebanese musician defines as “very melodic, lyrical, but also with a lot of energy, rhythm and force”. Both refuse the seriousness that

sometimes surrounds to classic music. “I can be myself while playing and I try to play the music that I like; classic music”, Malikian says, that he regret that sometimes the classic music in-terpreters have “an arrogant, stretched and distant” attitude, that create a bar-rier between the interpreter and the public, “frightening the young people who do not feel very identified with that”. But classic music is very beauti-ful and those who has the opportunity to listen it, I am sure that immediately will love it

Nothing better than a little of good music to fight against the summer hight temperatures:

the prolonged molicie, the indigestion os siestas, the politics, the oppressi-ve postvacacional lethargy. August in Madrid is a desert for music lovers but suddenly last night appear those two gents, our old friends Ara and Fernan-do, and suddenly a brilliance of light at the end of the tunnel glimpses, predic-tion of an imminent return or to the din fly-by-night. Malikian and Egozcue are musicians with classic formation and they were only well-known in a selected music circuit but they have become an open secret for the audien-ce.

Sold out.More than 300 people packed the

Sala Clamores yesterday, for surpri-se of the own interpreters, in the first of their three consecutive shows. It is difficult to resist the spell of a complex and virtuous, but accessible music. Because there is much music, and not infrequently diabolical, in the compo-sitions of Egozcue, but also the per-manent sensation thay any fan will be able to unravel it.

The violinist Armenian-Lebanese and the Buenosairean guitarist are ins-trumentalist very qualified, but part of their charming is that they have decla-red the frontal war to the formality. The phenomenon is still more accentuated in the case of Ara, that horrifie the aca-demy with his tribal jumps during his solos and that intolerable feeling that he enjoy with his work over the stage. The traditional critics are not already

bothered in following him, but yester-day they would be escandalized with his attire: worn away jeans and dark vest without t-shirt underneath, shine biceps, tatús and cheap imitation jewellery. In comparison, the bamboleante greyish fringe of Fernando it is very discreet.

The tandem and its three capable part-ners began the concert with that fuga -al-most a intoxicated cascade of notes- tit-led Creo, because Egozcue always was

Perhaps it constitutes a recklessness to be put under such rain of semifusas with the fingers still cold, and even Ma-likian accuses the vertigo and soils more than three or four notes, something that always likes in emphasizing his detrac-tors. There are margin of improvement in the interpretation of the ubiquitous violinist, without a doubt, but also much irritation when verifying that the classic musicians communicate better with the audience when they reduce the sacralisa-tion in his behavior. Egozcue is less vehement, but it resolves the most difficult passages with an angelical touch

other creative lines of Egozcue, like that wonderful rythmical infatuation titled Rumba. Malikian finished destroying his violín arc, but tonight he will return to have everything set. And a new occasion will arise to fight drowsiness with good music aganist the boredom.

Opinión

Five musicians of a magnificent talent, emo-tion, force and soul. These were the ingre-dients of the concert “Lejos” that we enjo-yed last night in Madrid.

The stretched atmosphere of Sala Clamores, the audience who filled all the tables in penum-brae did not blink impressed by the amazing was-te of energy that Ara Malikian offered them with “Con los ojs cerrados...” and also sometimes with his always humble commentaries.

Guitar, battery, piano, doublebass and violin that sounded frenetic, almost strident in some songs but also amazinlgy. Meanwhile Ara jumped and practically he destroyed his arc on the stage.

A frenetic music and career

Ara got talent since childhood, he was for some criticts a young prodigy. Of the hand of his father he learned his first notes and with 12 years he gave his first concert. With 15 he received a scholarship of the German Government (DAAD) studying at the “Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hanno-ver”.

It was the beginig of a vertiginous career that already has 22 discs recorded and multitude of co-llaborations with prestigious and well-known like Pedro Almodóvar in his film Speaks with her.

Today many artistic directors fight to welcome him at their stages in all the planet. Fans said that is becoming difficult to get tickets for his live con-certs. His agenda is fully booked, he got program-med concerts through all the Spanish geography,

Ara Malikian makes vibrate Clamores

Malikian moves like a wild animal at the stage. He close his eyes and curls to the wind let his unique music forth

but also in different countries like Holland, Arme-nia, China or USA.

Ara Malikian is nowadays a record phenome-non without comparison. His last recordings for Warner have had a great welcome in the Spanish critic, even when he collaborated with authors a priori little close to the popular taste. In addition, his success has been guaranteed also by sales in the classic field.

Palacio de la Granja de San Idelfonso Ara Malikian and Fernando Egozcue offered their new work “Con los Ojos Cerrados’.

The fusion of musical styles of the Armenian violinist Ara Malikian and the music of the Argentine guitarist Fernan-do Egozcue opened last night the festival of the Magical Nights at La Granja, this year with a great music programme du-ring the hole week.In front of numerous audience, the con-cert at the central patio of Real Fábrica de Cristales achieved an outstanding success, although a minor delay due to the rain fallen minutes before the pre-dicted beginning of the concert. At the time of the closing of this edition the musical performace had not yet finished.

VirtuosismoDuring his performace the virtuoso

violinsta presented his new spectacle titled “With the Closed Eyes”. The mes-tization of the Armenian violinist Ara Malikian, and the intense music of the Argentine guitarist Fernando Egozcue, managed to offer an authentic musical jewel. The music of Fernando Egozcue is Argentine and intensely touching root, conceived like a camera music, with a fort and flowed rythmical development.

The presence and personality of Ara Malikian matched perfectly with the

Egozcue compositions. His versatility makes him a unique artist, like already has demonstrated in other previous con-certs in Segovia and that for sure will demonstrate again in another concert programmed for the next week in Pe-draza.

The melodies of his violin were per-fectly accompanied by the instrumen-tation in Quintet (violin, guitar, piano, double-bass and percussion) and the quality of the rest of the musicians con-tributed to the rythmical consistency and harmonic solidity necessary to make en-joy the audience with a personal music style very defined.

After this first concert of last night, the cultural activity of the Festival Nights of Real Sitio will move to other points of the municipality, where they will continue with diverse free entrance activities that will continue throughout all the week.

Fernando Egozcue . Guitarist, composer, arreglador and director etse versatile artist has comprised of the most important projects from its arrival to Spain in 1992

Nuevas Músicas del Mundo - 1998“I already heard about a previous

work of this musician throuht my friend Alvaro Fernández, concretely “Danza”, he granted me that his compositios were “wonderful”, and sincerely, I thought; probably he is not that much… great mis-take, in spite of still not to have had the opportunity to hear “Danza”, with this “Tango in Silence” has been enough to me, when also in silence, can live more near the purity whenever I listen this piece again and again at home. And there, indeed there, it is where I have realized my addiction. To be absolutely honest, I must recognize that if obligatorily had to vote the five better works of the 97, this one for sure would be between one of them and in addition in a relevant place.” Rafael Beltrán

El País 13 de enero de 2001“They presented “Ser dos”, a refined work, of European camerístico adjust-ment and Afro-American rythmical urge, that the guitarist Fernando Egozcue signs. And they followed with another piece of dramatically cinematographic Egozcue: Tango in silence. A contempo-rary tango to which perceivable musical elements we can find in groups like Path Metheny, Paul Winter or Ralph Towner. A high flight work.”

ABC 8 de Septiembre de 2002“The dynamic is exceptional in the

compositions of Fernando Egozcue: Rue-gos y Preguntas and Tango in silence.”

El Mundo 18 de Julio de 2002“The music of Fernando Egozcue.

Melodic rythms, harmony and elegance in pure state.”

El País de las Tentaciones 2004

“The compositions of the guitarist Fernando Egozcue, in particular the ex-traordinary Tango in silence, take the pas-sion in its veins.”

El País 20 de enero 2005“Egozcue, with its guitar chipped by

the blows of the passion, is moaning each note like a Buenosairean Keith Jarret.” Fernando Neira

El País 20 de Mayo 2006“The Egozcue compositions in works

like Ruegos y preguntas or Manu have reminiscences of the group Oregon, Pat Metheny or Rio de Janeiro. An authentic luxury for Madrid.” Carlos Galilea

Envivop 12 de Diciembre 2008“If we make a resemblance with the

architecture, the music of Fernando Ego-zcue would be like a dreamed and own construction that only can exist in the best comic strip or the impossible scenery of the fantastic films”.

Nevertheless it is music and it exists and it is as real as good. In these times

where fusions impostadas with only com-mercial intentions abound and with too much relaxing music to alleviate the delay of the dentist waiting room it is really exciting to listen so much passion. If someone put a gun in our head, forcing us to define it with a sin-gle adjective, we would say that the music of Egozcue is particularly intense. We hear in his music many echoes from other cross-sec-tion musics from all the times, like European classic music. And the result is something new and amazing, that do not admit compara-tions”.

Both run away from the pomp that sometimes surrounds classic music. “When playing I can feel myself and I try to play the music that I like, that it is the classic music”, Malikian says, that he is sorry that sometimes the inter-preters have “an arrogant, stretched and dis-tant” attitude, which creates a barrier between the interpreter and the audience, “frighting the young people who do not feel very identified. But what classic music is very beautiful and whatever who has the opportunity to listen to it, I am sure that immediately it would be be-come fond of. In fact, we have the luck that in our concerts we can find a lot of young people and realize that classic music is also for them, not only for old or melomaniac people”.

Ophelia- 12 de Octubre 2008“The compositions of the guitarist Fernando Egozcue, in particular the extraordinary Tan-go in silence, take passion in its veins.”

El País- 30 de Agosto 2011

“It is difficult to resist the spell of a com-plex and virtuous, but accessible music in his work. Because there are too much music, and not infrequently diabolical, in the composi-tions of Egozcue, but also the permanent sen-sation that any fan will be able to unravel it”
