TWIG PROJECT

BackgroundThe parroquia of Julcuy, one of the most disadvantaged from Ecuador, it is positioned in the county of Jipijapa, the south of Manabi.

In this village, that has an area of nearly 16.240 hectares, live 2474 people in 22 rural communities that have experienced a population increase

of approx. 1%, according to the dates of the National Institute of Statistics and Census (NISC). The density of the population is very low (0,013

inhabitants/km2).

"Since I was born I had to carry this water, because I

need it in my house. We need to use it because there

isn’t anywhere else"LOURDES RIVERA

Background Analyzing the population’s pyramid, we can see that approximate 50% of the population is over 24 years old and ones older than 65 are nearly

15%.

From 0 to 4 years - 10.21%

Taking into account the information above and using the multi-sector evaluation methodology proposed by Project Sphere, has been done anoverall diagnostic of the parroquia and its communities.

For it has been realized a diagnostic for each of the following priority sectors of the humanitarian intervention:

  Water and Sanitation

  Food security and nutrition

  Households and non-alimentary items

  Health

With a scale from 0 to 100, where 0 is the lack of services and 100 total satisfaction of services, it has been concluded that the most lacking

sector is water and sanitation with 44%, followed by food security and nutrition (51%), health (52%) and households and non-alimentary items

(66%).

The bad water quality, together with its shortage, is negatively influencing the food security and the nutrition of the population, especially of the

children. The infantile health it is being affected, provoking the lack of school presence and consequently educational problems.

On the other hand, the field work of the investigation and the closeness of the population during this process of evaluation, has allowed observing

that all the previous problems are unfortunately influenced in a considerable way by the self-esteem of the population.

With the purpose of changing the life quality of these people, C.U.E. T. - Corporación Universitaria de Estudio y Trabajo that has approximately 20

years of experience working with the disadvantaged in the province of Manabí, where it is also included the parroquia of Julcuy, has contacted

Twig Project with whom has decided to implement this project.

From 5 to 14 years - 21.43%

From 15 to 24 years - 16.18%

From 25 years to 64 years - 37.93%Older than 65 years - 14.25%

TWIG PROJECT

JustificationThe present actions presented in this project are justified due to the fact that the water supply has been identified in the commu-

nity of Julcuy as a critical sector with major deficiencies.

The poorness of the inhabitants and the hostile environment, together with the dry and deserted climate, it forces them to make constant trips, of 6hours, with the purpose to get any type of water to drink, cook and clean. Furthermore this problem also influences, directly or indirectly, other sectorssuch as nutrition, health, education, and sanitation.

According to the World Health Association, the normal water supply for a person in order to survive is of 5 liters per day and to speak of “acceptableconditions”, each person needs 50 liters of water a day. More than this, UNO has established that the “minimum right for water” is of 40 liters per

day.

TWIG PROJECT

4

JustificationTaking into account the previous data, we can conclude that, in the specific case of Julcuy, the population needs 124.000 liters of water daily (50

lt. * 2474 = 123.700 lt.) in order to live in acceptable conditions.

Regarding health, the diseases that most affect the population of Julcuy, and especially the children, are the diarrhea and malnutrition. The lastones being the most vulnerable due to the fact that their bodies are not strong enough to beat it, which leads to lack of presence in schools andnegatively influences the education.

Also, all the previous problems are considerable influencing the self-esteem of the population, which doesn’t feel proud ofits situation and location.
