  • A MESSAGE FROM FR. RAJ

Dear Sacred Heart Parish Family, I can’t believe it has already been 3 months since I arrived as your parish priest. Given that, I thought it would be a good time to share a bit of a parish update with you all. Even with all the challenges that our current situation has brought, I look back at this time of transition with gratitude and peace. As strange as it has been, it has been great meeting parishioners in whatever little ways possible phone calls, emails, socially-distanced conversations in the parking lot, parish appointments, house visits and even a few house blessings (with safe practices, of course). Even getting to know parishioners at the brief opportunities at masses has been a joy - I do look forward to seeing your uncovered smiles and what the bottom half of your faces look like someday. =) Having been here for a few months now, I also wanted to express my gratitude to all the ways that so many of you have been taking care of and supporting the community. What a blessing it is to witness parishioners taking care of one another, visiting and assisting members of our community who are in need, ministers still assisting with our liturgies, continue with devotional ministries like the rosary, catechists and assistants making our faith formation thrive, and volunteers maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of our beautiful Sacred Heart parish grounds and mission church of St. Anne. I must not forget the generosity of so many in their material support for the parish, also - your monetary gifts make it possible for us to do God’s work. Thank you! And indeed, we are continuing that work. Rest assured even with the challenges, the parish continues to journey on. Faith formation continues on strongly with over 30 families involved, 65 students officially enrolled, with 55 preparing for sacraments this coming year. I have been blessed to meet with both our Parish Council and Finance Council - and through the work of these councils, I am confident in what is in store for the future of our parish. You can look forward to new projects, completed projects, and the release of both a Parish financial report and a summary of the latest parish survey in the coming weeks. The liturgy committee plans to meet soon also, so that we can plan well for beautiful, safe, and reverent liturgies in the Advent and Christmas seasons. Likewise, the hope is that in the coming months my staff and I will be able to connect and collaborate with volunteers in order to continue to develop new ministries and improve the work of existing ministries - pro-life committee, vocations committee, youth ministry, young adult ministry, bible studies, various prayer and devotion groups, baptismal prep, marriage prep, etc. None of this would be possible without the support of a faith community, so I thank you all again. Humbly, I also ask for your continued prayers, and may we all discern how we might continue to support the work we do as a parish family - through whatever offerings of time, talent and treasure God is inviting us to make. Know that whatever gift you share with the community, we trust that God will use it for amazing good. Onwards and upwards, friends. In Christ, Fr. Hacia adelante y hacia arriba, amigos. En Cristo, P. Raj Derivera Administrador parroquial, Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón | Iglesia de la Misión de Santa Ana

We Americans have shared many years of pride for our country and accomplishments. We have also suffered pain in the loss of thousands of our military who died to keep us safe. We have survived the Great Depression and many, many storms such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes through the years. But we still have the biggest hurdle of all. We need to abolish abortion once and for all! It is the killing of tiny innocent babies in the womb of their mothers. Babies are a precious gift from God. And no one has the right to kill them! They used to be safe in their mother's womb. But since 1973 when abortions were made legal it has become the most dangerous place for a baby to be. All the baby wants is to be loved and cherished. With the November 3rd election coming up, we have the means to right this terrible wrong. Abortion has already killed over 62 million babies in the USA since 1973. We could help save the lives of millions of babies.

SEVEN WAYS TO ENCOURGE YOUR PRIEST

#4: Express appreciation in writing: A spoken compliment is always welcome, but a written one can be read over and over again for years. So, when you hear or see something you like from your priest, write an appreciation note. #5: Offer to meet a need: Some people make their spiritual leaders defensive and angry by saying, “You need to…” That approach is seldom welcome and almost always counterproductive. If you see a need, approach your spiritual leader by saying, “I’d like to help by…” If you see an area that can be improved, take responsibility for working on it. Be an active participant in your church. Get involved by teaching a class, leading a workshop, singing in the choir, feeding the hungry, being a lector, Eucharistic minister, greeter, etc. Ask your priest where and how you can employ your gifts. The greatest joy and affirmation a priest can get is to have parishioners live the faith in word and deed. A priest’s greatest happiness is to see people attend Mass regularly, pray constantly, be involved in ministries, volunteer for service, and generously support the parish financially.

    SAFE ENVIRONMENT

October is also the month we complete our Circle of Grace lessons. These lessons help children understand how very precious they are and how relationships in life are called to be sacred. Understanding this can help them to protect their person and to be respectful of others. Please contact Renae Magaña, if you would like to preview the Circle of Grace lessons. Our most important objective is to maintain a Safe Environment for all the CFF children. Accordingly, ALL children under the age of 18 must be escorted by an adult while on Parish premises. Volunteers: Please prayerfully consider if you can volunteer for the CFF Program. All volunteers working with children will need to meet diocesan requirements of a background check and attending a SAFE ENVIRONMENT session. Please contact the Parish Office for more information.

    GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR OCTOBER 18TH

Nobody enjoys paying taxes. Despite our displeasure in being forced to do so, we also realize that the monies generated from taxes allows governments to provide essential services for its people. Corruption really gets our goat, however. When we witness malfeasance, overspending, irresponsibility, and dishonesty in governmental spending, the grave injustices make an already unpleasant and arduous task even more difficult. The inappropriate distribution and use of hard-earned monies can leave a person quite angry and disconnected. It’s bad enough the government wants something from me, now God does, too? God is not concerned necessarily with our money, although its proper use does factor into our faith life. As the payment of secular taxes speaks of our allegiance to the government, our return to God speaks of our allegiance to God. All of creation, even the entire universe, is fashioned in the image and likeness of God. What speaks to God and has meaning and relevance to him? All of creation and indeed our very selves! God delights in us and when we present ourselves back to him, he delights even more! As the payment of secular taxes is designed to secure the equitable distribution of goods and services to all people, so is our return of ourselves to God in gratitude meant to advance God’s kingdom here on earth. When our exclusive and sincere allegiance is given to God, God can use us to set things right and straight again. The wounds of sin distort our relationship and disorder our world. By giving ourselves and all of creation back to God in gratitude, we acknowledge the proper Creator and Author of life for who He is and devote our labors exclusively to God’s kingdom and the justice, peace, or order God envisions. In giving back to God all that belongs to God, we set the axis of our lives correctly and put our priorities in proper order. All of our relationships, especially with God, our brothers and sisters, and all of creation are perceived more clearly as they really are. Using, accumulating, wasting, exploiting, hording, and self-preservation are no longer necessary.
