Granada Christian Education Center Issue We’d like to dedicate this issue to news of the Christian Education Center. It represents a huge new undertaking, one for which we have been praying and preparing for almost two years. Many of you have shared the dream to offer Christian education in Granada, and some have walked property as we’ve assessed various locations for the project. We thank all of you who have participated with prayers, advice, finances, legal work and leg work to get us to this point. 2012 will be a year of new work and we’ll need the continuing prayers and participation of friends and partners as God unfolds His plan to all of us. Its already shaping up to be an extraordinary adventure, and we trust that it will hold blessings for each of us as we move forward. If we know anything about this venture, its that it is well beyond our current capabilities. We are probably out of our depth in every aspect: from having enough time for all that has to be done, the skills specific to starting and running a school, and the finances to fully acquire the property and build and maintain the infrastructure. The last five years developing ministry at El Puente have been a wonderful process. Now, we are seeing that this work has been preparing us for the next phase of God’s work here. It has taught us what is needed for Granada, trained us for working in Nicaragua, and built relationships and goals for the work of the school. A diverse and capable team is forming. And all of us know that in our weakness God will be made manifest. We’d like to dedicate this issue to news of the Christian Education Center. It

Selection of the Site…

The fast growing, recently-rural Pantanal barrio, (swamp in Spanish) where we will be

working is considered the worst in Granada, with marginalized families arriving as the

city grows and the cost of living rises. Like any frontier it is largely without services and

beyond the law. There are no secondary schools in the area and primary facilities are

very poor. Many children do not attend school. There are no sports or activities for the

youth, who are left to wander the streets. Consequently, Pantanal has become an

engine for crime which spreads to the rest of the city. If we can effect change in this

barrio, which is on the opposite side of the city from EL Puente, we will have

established an important complement to the work already begun. The site is large

enough for the school, sports fields, a technical center, agricultural projects, and

additional projects such as missionary and pastor training centers.

Acquisition of the property….

In signing the contract, we committed ourselves to finding the remaining 3/4 of the

funds by February of 2013. We are most grateful for the initial funds, donated in faith

that the rest will follow. The balance represents approximately $140,000.

First Stage of the Infrastructure...

During the summer of 2012 we hope to offer Bible Studies, sports programs, and

community outreach on the property. Our first needs will include a well to obtain

water, as there is no public water in the area. Electric lines have recently been run

along the property, but will need to be extended to the area where we hope to build a

pavilion, called a rancho, where we can hold events protected from the sun and rain.

We are exploring organizations who might be able to partner with us in developing

these basic needs. (Please don’t be shy if you have any leads or contacts for us.)

Ministry is already underway…

Thanks to interns, staff, Nicaraguan neighbors with a heart for this project, and the

efforts of Darrell and Linda Hinson, two Bible Studies and a life recovery program (for

addicts) already take place each week on the street near the property. We have made

friends and established homes where the word of God is already being shared. Thrice

weekly we transport over 60 people in the back of cars and pickup trucks to services at

El Puente. Yet, we are not keeping up with the huge numbers of people who want to

participate. With all that is going on and the enthusiastic reception in the barrio, the

need for the pavilion on the property is urgent.

For those of you who have asked how you can Participate…

Registered nonprofits now exist in the ‘States and in Nicaragua. Funds can be

accepted through International Christian Education Centers (ICEC) a Virginia 501(c)3

corporation. Information for contacting them is included in the box to the left. Thank

you in advance for any help you are able to provide. And if you would like to talk to

Charles or Sarah about the project, please do not hesitate to call us at 1-(434)-227-4917.
