Santa Elena (Salinas) were living giants.

y HISTORY

Santa Elena, since prehistoric times, was the capital of the peninsula of the same

name. Before the discovery it was called Sumpa, Chimu language adjective that meanstip.

Francisco Pizarro discovered the peninsula of Santa Elena, but in reality Pizarro went

down in history as a conqueror, but it was a great pilot, Bartolome Ruiz South Sea,

who discovered and explored the coast of the Ecuadorian coast, so there is no

document granting Pizarro merit of geographic discovery of the peninsula of Santa

Elena.

On August 18, 1531 Francisco Pizarro landed in the resort of Ballenita (so named

because there were many whales) by stepping first Ecuadorian land. Immediately tookpossession on behalf of the Kings of Spain and named it Santa Elena, because that day

is the Empress St. Helena. Pizarro then went through the town of Santa Elena that

the ancient people called her sump, whose people was cheerful and busy. Many

Spanish people decided to live in Santa Elena, enjoying the good weather, the

medicinal water from their wells and a quiet life.

y LOCATION AND DISTRIBUTION POLICY

The province consists of 3 cantons or municipalities: La Libertad, Salinas and Santa Elena,which have not undergone any change after the separation of territorial Guayas. The

geographic location of the province includes the northern province of Manabi, Guayas

east and south and the Pacific Ocean to the west, particularly the peninsula with the same

name, Santa Elena. Among its most prominent populations consists: La Libertad, Salinas,

Santa Elena, Ballenita, Manglaralto, Montanita, Ancon, Anconcito, Punta Blanca, Colonche,

Olon, Ayangue, Chanduy, Palmar, among others .

Santa Elena is a province of the coast of Ecuador created on November 7, 2007, the

youngest of the current 24, with territories that prior to that date were part of the

Guayas province, west of it. Its capital is the city of Santa Elena. This province is a

large hotel infrastructure, an oil refinery, airport and seaport. Is a well known as the

beach of Salinas.

The provincialization had been an aspiration for the majority of Spaniards who

for decades had managed this request in different institutional, and usually not

been taken into account or blocked by the majority party in Congress who for

years had been dominated by the conservative Social Christian Party, who

have the power of the Guayas Province of Santa Elena wanted to separate.

Among his reasons for provincialization is the peninsular cultural identity

(culture of fishermen indomestiza descent, which in rural areas are commoner

culture), their different economic lifestyle (beach tourism, handicrafts, hotels,

fishing, entertainment and light oil production), and the centralization and

continuous neglect by the provincial government established in Guayaquil

representatives who have never had, nor never have had representatives in the

National Congress of Ecuador.

On November 7, 2007 was published in the Official Gazette # 206, Santa Elena and

provincia.3 This occurs after the Tschilas Santo Domingo has been recorded as the

province 23 in the Official Gazette # 205, the day before November 6.

y POPULATION AND AREA

Santa Elena has an area of 3762.8 square kilometers (1.46% of national total) and a resident

population of 270,000 (1.97% of national total) and a floating population of more than 200,000

people in high season of tourism, mainly tourists in the city Guayaquil and other districts of the

province of Guayas and the country. The Santa Elena has five rural parishes, Salinas and La

Libertad two completely urban.

Although the three counties are politically separate, physically and in their live three cities: Salinas,

Libertad and Santa Elena with rural parishes and Jose Luis Tamayo Ballenita are fused to form a

single city or agglomeration today. That total accumulated a total population of 180,000 according

to INEC projections for 2010.

LA LIBERTAD

The County has an area of 25.6 km and 87,798 inhabitants, of whom 43,700 are men and 44,098

women. It is the only totally urban Ecuador canton (canton consists of a single city occupying the

entire territory). Most are devoted to commercial and tourist activities. It is the commercial heart

of the urban area and the province.

Trade is based on fishing and tourism. The peninsula has some fishing ports: Santa Rosa,

San Pedro and Chanduy major shopping area, economic potentials that were previously

managed from the province of Guayas. There is activity all year round and includes a

number of people. Other fishing villages: Ancon Anconcito and Palmar.

For sightseeing, the Santa Elena Peninsula spa gets its approximately 80 thousand tourists

per season, indicating an estimated income of 12'000, 000. A large percentage of these

revenues are collected by employers in the province of Guayas who have invested in

hotels, restaurants, entertainment centers, etc.

The three municipalities manage $ 28 million annually. The main sources of revenue are

state appropriations and taxes. Santa Elena Peninsula has two major shortcomings

according to the authorities: the health care and sanitation.

With the decree of the province is entitled provincialization, political, four deputies, a

governor who is appointed by the Government, the Provincial Prefect and its 11 provincial

Fiesta de Cristo Rey

Una de las primeras manifestaciones religiosas que cuentan los abuelos, fue la celebracinde la fiesta de las cruces, realizada frente a una cruz de guasango, ubicada en lo que hoy es

la Plaza Cvica, frente a la iglesia se caa y madera de estilo criollo, el 3 de mayo. La fiestagrande de Las Cruces, se tornaba pintoresca con las "vacas locas", "el palo encebado",

piatas, juegos populares y el gran baile pblico.

GASTRONOMY

The gastronomy of Santa Elena have to highlight products like the fish and theseafood, that made typical dishes of this zone like shrimp ceviche, shell, lobster, fish,

octopus, squid, oysters, clams, mussels.Sancocho de pescado that is a fish soup and yuca. Fish, either fried, broiled, baked,

sweaty, garnished with fried plantains. Another typical dish are, boulders filled with

shrimp, corviche, empanadas, banana chips and coffee. Also shrimp pie, consisting of a

flour dough stuffed with shrimp sauce with spices and vegetables, and fried in oil.

Other dishes that can be tasted in this city are the Seco de Chivo, Caldo de Pata de

Gallina Dry, Sweet and rich addition to drinks like coconut water and fruit smoothies.

La Ruta del Spondylus es un camino histrico binacional entre los pases hermanos de Ecuador y

Per , con finalidad turstica la ruta en Ecuador comprende desde San Lorenzo (Esmeraldas) hasta

Huaquillas (El Oro). Denominda Ruta del Spondylus por la concha Spondylus que en tiempos

prehispnicos fue una de las ms demandadas y tena un alto valor ceremonial y de comercio en los

Andes ecuatorianos y principales cacicazgos peruanos. Estas conchas y adornos elaborados de las

mismas, fueron encontrados en la mayora de todos los ms importantes sitios arqueolgicos

descubiertos en la costa oeste de Sur Amrica.

Esta ruta es rica en atractivos tursticos de toda ndole, tales como arqueolgicos, histricos,

naturales, culturales y pintorescos poblados de pescadores.

WHAT IS SPONDILUS

Spondylus is a genus of bivalve mollusks Ostrea order present in different parts of the world,particularly two species of this genus, the species Spondylus Spondylus princeps and CACIF

found off the coast of Ecuador. Their colors range from orange, red and purple, has somespines or bumps on its shell, which makes them attractive. It is also called "red gold".
