What are some of the relationship issues surfacing during thepandemic? We are conducting research looking at the effects of COVID-19 and quarantine onrelationships. It’s not to the point where I can comment on it yet, but we expect thatthere will be more problems in relationships at this time. Everyone’s in crampedquarters, there’s a lot of anxiety, and there’s a lot to manage in terms of thepracticalities of life. Anytime those come together, you’re creating a perfect storm forpeople to be at odds about it.Conflict is not necessarily a bad thing. Every couple is going to argue. What matters ishow you fight, and how those negative interactions balance out with positiveinteractions. A lot of it comes down to whether conflict escalates and becomesincreasingly negative, hostile, and nasty, or whether people are able to successfullynegotiate outcomes that everyone can be OK with.ADVERTISEMENT

A researcher named John Gottman, who has studied marriages for decades, hasconcluded that in order for a couple to have a healthy, functional relationship, thepositive interactions have to outweigh the negative ones by a ratio of five to one.I am in a long-term relationship, and we have children. One of the biggest issues weare facing is what to let those children do. Is it safe for them to go out and see theirfriends? We have different views on that. It’s tricky. That’s one of the biggest thingsthat couples are likely fighting about now.

Answer the following questions1.What are the effects of Covid-19 and quarantine on relationships?2.What conflicts you can find between the couple in the quarantine?3.Who was the researcher that studied marriage for decade?4.What does he conclude to have a healthy relationship?

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Human trafficking has claimed an estimated 20 million-plus victims worldwide—withmore than 800,000 victims enslaved each year. And yet, despite significant anti-trafficking efforts over the past decade, the number of modern-day slaves seems onlyto be growing. We are attacking the scourge of modern-day slavery by providing theU.S. government and other leaders with the tools they need to disrupt the criminals, networks, mafias and gangs that make more than $150 billion a year by exploitingother human beings

READING COMPREHENSIONRIGHTS AND DUTIES OF A CITIZEN

As citizens of a country, we have rights and duties. Rights are described asindividual freedom and benefits that citizens deserve and that are usuallyprovided and supported by the nation. For example:

Right to get an education: It allows us to acquire knowledge to reach a fullsocial life.

Right to freedom of speech: Right to express our opinions without restraint.

On the other hand, citizens also have duties to do. Duties are the set ofresponsibilities that we have in and with our country, e.g., comply with thecountry law and be respectful to other citizen’s rights.
