KEEP ALL SAFETY WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS FORTHE FUTURE !

Safety warnings common for grinding, sanding, wire brushing, polishing, carving or abrasive cut-ting-off operations:

a) This power tool is intended to function as agrinder, sander, wire brush, polisher, carving orcut-off tool. Read all safety warnings, instruc-tions, illustrations and specifications providedwith this power tool. Failure to follow all instruc-tions listed below may result in electric shock, fireand/or serious injury.

c) Do not use accessories which are not specifi-cally designed and recommended by the toolmanufacturer. Just because the accessory can beattached to your power tool, it does not assure safeoperation.

d) The rated speed of the grinding accessoriesmust be at least equal to the maximum speedmarked on the power tool. Grinding accessoriesrunning faster than their rated speed can break andfly apart.

e) The outside diameter and the thickness of youraccessory must be within the capacity rating ofyour power tool. Incorrectly sized accessories can-not be adequately controlled.

f) The arbour size of wheels, sanding drums or anyother accessory must properly fit the spindle orcollet of the power tool. Accessories that do notmatch the mounting hardware of the power tool willrun out of balance, vibrate excessively and maycause loss of control.

g) Mandrel mounted wheels, sanding drums, cut-ters or other accessories must be fully insertedinto the collet or chuck. If the mandrel is insuffi-ciently held and/or the overhang of the wheel is toolong, the mounted wheel may become loose and beejected at high velocity.

h) Do not use a damaged accessory. Before eachuse inspect the accessory such as abrasivewheels for chips and cracks, sanding drum forcracks, tear or excess wear, wire brush for looseor cracked wires. If power tool or accessory is

dropped, inspect for damage or install an un-damaged accessory. After inspecting and in-stalling an accessory, position yourself andbystanders away from the plane of the rotatingaccessory and run the power tool at maximumno-load speed for one minute. Damaged acces-sories will normally break apart during this test time.

i) Wear personal protective equipment. Dependingon application, use face shield, safety goggles orsafety glasses. As appropriate, wear dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves and workshop aproncapable of stopping small abrasive or workpiecefragments. The eye protection must be capable ofstopping flying debris generated by various opera-tions. The dust mask or respirator must be capableof filtrating particles generated by your operation.Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise maycause hearing loss.

j) Keep bystanders a safe distance away fromwork area. Anyone entering the work area mustwear personal protective equipment. Fragmentsof workpiece or of a broken accessory may fly awayand cause injury beyond immediate area of opera-tion.

k) Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfacesonly, when performing an operation where thecutting accessory may contact hidden wiring orits own cord. Cutting accessory contacting a “live”wire may make exposed metal parts of the powertool “live” and could give the operator an electricshock.

l) Always hold the tool firmly in your hand(s)during the start-up. The reaction torque of themotor, as it accelerates to full speed, can cause thetool to twist.

m) Use clamps to support workpiece wheneverpractical. Never hold a small workpiece in onehand and the tool in the other hand while in use.Clamping a small workpiece allows you to use yourhand(s) to control the tool. Round material such asdowel rods, pipes or tubing have a tendency to rollwhile being cut, and may cause the bit to bind orjump toward you.

n) Position the cord clear of the spinning acces-sory. If you lose control, the cord may be cut or

snagged and your hand or arm may be pulled intothe spinning accessory.

o) Never lay the power tool down until the acces-sory has come to a complete stop. The spinningaccessory may grab the surface and pull the powertool out of your control.

p) After changing the bits or making any adjust-ments, make sure the collet nut, chuck or anyother adjustment devices are securely tight-ened. Loose adjustment devices can unexpectedlyshift, causing loss of control, loose rotating compo-nents will be violently thrown.

q) Do not run the power tool while carrying it atyour side. Accidental contact with the spinning ac-cessory could snag your clothing, pulling the acces-sory into your body.

r) Regularly clean the power tool’s air vents. Themotor’s fan will draw the dust inside the housingand excessive accumulation of powdered metal maycause electrical hazards.

s) Do not operate the power tool near flammablematerials. Sparks could ignite these materials.

t) Do not use accessories that require liquidcoolants. Using water or other liquid coolants mayresult in electrocution or shock.

Kickback and related warnings

Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched or snaggedrotating wheel, sanding band, brush or any other acces-sory. Pinching or snagging causes rapid stalling of therotating accessory which in turn causes the uncon-trolled power tool to be forced in the direction oppositeof the accessory’s rotation.

For example, if an abrasive wheel is snagged or pinchedby the workpiece, the edge of the wheel that is enteringinto the pinch point can dig into the surface of the ma-terial causing the wheel to climb out or kick out. Thewheel may either jump toward or away from the oper-ator, depending on direction of the wheel’s movementat the point of pinching. Abrasive wheels may also breakunder these conditions.

- 12 -

Page 5: Manual - Proxxon FBS_240... · 2018. 8. 27. · jum pto wardyou . n) Positio nth ecordclea rofth espin nin gacces - sory .If youlo se control,th ecordma ybe cu tor snagge dan dyou

Kickback is the result of power tool misuse and/or in-correct operating procedures or conditions and can beavoided by taking proper precautions as given below.

a) Maintain a firm grip on the power tool and posi-tion your body and arm to allow you to resistkickback forces. The operator can control kickbackforces, if proper precautions are taken.

b) Use special care when working corners, sharpedges etc. Avoid bouncing and snagging the ac-cessory. Corners, sharp edges or bouncing have atendency to snag the rotating accessory and causeloss of control or kickback.

c) Do not attach a toothed saw blade. Such bladescreate frequent kickback and loss of control.

d) Always feed the bit into the material in the samedirection as the cutting edge is exiting from thematerial (which is the same direction as thechips are thrown). Feeding the tool in the wrongdirection causes the cutting edge of the bit to climbout of the work and pull the tool in the direction ofthis feed.

e) When using rotary files, cut-off wheels, high-speed cutters or tungsten carbide cutters, al-ways have the work securely clamped. Thesewheels will grab if they become slightly canted inthe groove, and can kickback. When a cut-off wheelgrabs, the wheel itself usually breaks. When a rotaryfile, high-speed cutter or tungsten carbide cuttergrabs, it may jump from the groove and you couldlose control of the tool.

Safety warnings specific for grinding and abrasivecutting-off operations:

a) Use only wheel types that are recommended foryour power tool and only for recommended ap-plications. For example: do not grind with theside of a cut-off wheel. Abrasive cut-off wheels areintended for peripheral grinding, side forces appliedto these wheels may cause them to shatter.

b) For threaded abrasive cones and plugs use onlyundamaged wheel mandrels with an unrelievedshoulder flange that are of correct size and

length. Proper mandrels will reduce the possibilityof breakage.

c) Do not “jam” a cut-off wheel or apply excessivepressure. Do not attempt to make an excessivedepth of cut. Overstressing the wheel increases theloading and susceptibility to twisting or snagging ofthe wheel in the cut and the possibility of kickbackor wheel breakage.

d) Do not position your hand in line with and behindthe rotating wheel. When the wheel, at the pointof operation, is moving away from your hand, thepossible kickback may propel the spinning wheeland the power tool directly at you.

e) When wheel is pinched, snagged or when inter-rupting a cut for any reason, switch off thepower tool and hold the power tool motionlessuntil the wheel comes to a complete stop. Neverattempt to remove the cut-off wheel from thecut while the wheel is in motion otherwise kick-back may occur. Investigate and take corrective ac-tion to eliminate the cause of wheel pinching orsnagging.

f) Do not restart the cutting operation in the work-piece. Let the wheel reach full speed and care-fully re-enter the cut. The wheel may bind, walkup or kickback if the power tool is restarted in theworkpiece.

g) Support panels or any oversized workpiece tominimize the risk of wheel pinching and kick-back. Large workpieces tend to sag under their ownweight. Supports must be placed under the work-piece near the line of cut and near the edge of theworkpiece on both sides of the wheel.

h) Use extra caution when making a “pocket cut”into existing walls or other blind areas. The pro-truding wheel may cut gas or water pipes, electricalwiring or objects that can cause kickback.

Safety warnings specific for wire brushing opera-tions:

a) Be aware that wire bristles are thrown by thebrush even during ordinary operation. Do notoverstress the wires by applying excessive load

- 13 -

Page 6: Manual - Proxxon FBS_240... · 2018. 8. 27. · jum pto wardyou . n) Positio nth ecordclea rofth espin nin gacces - sory .If youlo se control,th ecordma ybe cu tor snagge dan dyou

to the brush. The wire bristles can easily penetratelight clothing and/or skin.

b) Allow brushes to run at operating speed for atleast one minute before using them. During thistime no one is to stand in front or in line with thebrush. Loose bristles or wires will be dischargedduring the run-in time.

c) Direct the discharge of the spinning wire brushaway from you. Small particles and tiny wire frag-ments may be discharged at high velocity duringthe use of these brushes and may become imbed-ded in your skin.

Please note that the sound and vibration measurements inparticular have been performed with Proxxon bits and cut-ters. When using third-party brands we cannot guaranteecompliance with the statements given here!

Clamping and changing the bit

Important!

• Never work without safety glasses.• Wear a protective mask if large amounts of dust or

harmful dusts accumulate.• Never press the lock button while the device is oper-

ating.• Depending on the collet size, bits and cutters may

have a shaft diameter of max. 3.2 mm.• Insert the tools are far as possible when clamping. En-

sure that the shaft of the tool does not stand out morethan 30 mm from the collet. Excessively protrudingshafts can bend easily and contribute to poor concen-tricity.

• Do not in any case use bits and cutters with an arbourlength of more than 55 mm!

• When using collets, always make sure that the colletchuck and the utilised tool have the same shaft diam-eter! The arbour of the tool must be seated firmly andsecurely in the collet!

• Do not work with damaged, bent or worn bits and cut-ters! Make sure the tools are in perfect condition.Damaged or worn tools can break and cause injuries!

• When storing the bits and cutters, make sure they arereliably protected from damage!

• A correct and consistent speed achieves a high grind-ing performance, not excessive contact pressure!

• By tendency: Bits and cutters with smaller diametersrequire higher speeds than those with a larger diam-eter.

• Attention: You absolutely must observe the permissiblemaximum speed of the bits and cutters! The tool can

break when the maximum permissible speed is ex-ceeded. Flying parts can cause damage and severe in-juries!

1. Slightly turn drill chuck 2 (Fig. 2) and simultaneouslypress lock button (1) until the latter engages.

2. Open chuck and change bit.

We recommend PROXXON collet chucks for optimal truerunning.

Operating instructions

Using the machine

Attention:

Secure the work piece during work! In addition to en-abling more pleasant and efficient working, it also re-duces the risk of the workpiece flying about! Please note: A work piece flying about is a risk for in-juries! Use a vice or suitable clamping fixture to hold thework piece!

It is imperative to avoid electric tool recoil!

1. To activate, operate switch 4 (Fig. 1) and set the rightspeed for the work on rotational speed adjusting knob1. Applicable in principle, tools with smaller diametersmust be operated at higher speeds, and tools withgreater diameters at lower speeds in order to achieveoptimal results.

2. When cutting or engraving, hold the machine as if itwere a pen (Fig. 3), being careful not to occlude thevent slits.

3. For roughing down, grip the machine as if it were ahammer (Fig. 4).
