Lucas 18:1 - 81 En aquel tiempo, para enseñar a sus discípulos la necesidad de orar siempre y sin desfallecer, Jesús les propuso esta parábola:

2 “En cierta ciudad había un juez que no temía a Dios ni respetaba a los hombres.

3 Vivía en aquella misma ciudad una viuda que acudía a él con frecuencia para decirle: ‘Hazme justicia contra mi adversario’.

4 Por mucho tiempo, el juez no le hizo caso, pero después se dijo: ‘Aunque no temo a Dios ni respeto a los hombres,

5 sin embargo, por la insistencia de esta viuda, voy a hacerle justicia para que no me siga molestando’ ”.

6 Dicho esto, Jesús comentó: “Si así pensaba el juez injusto,

7 ¿creen ustedes acaso que Dios no hará justicia a sus elegidos, que claman a él día y noche, y que los hará esperar?

8 Yo les digo que les hará justicia sin tardar. Pero, cuando venga el Hijo del hombre, ¿creen ustedes que encontrará fe sobre la tierra?”

Luke 18:1 - 81 Then Jesus told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said,

2 “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being.

3 And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’

4 For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,

5 because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’ ”

6 The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.

7 Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them?

8 I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Reflections on Luke 18:1 – 8 Reflexiones en Lucas 18:1 - 8 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Oct. 20, 2013

Today is the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time. All the readings for the Mass today, encourage us to pray. It is good to take one of them at a time and reflect on what is said, and then find some application for ourselves, as the Lord gives it to us. We will consult the Fathers of the Church for their reflections.

Hoy es el 29 º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Las lecturas de la Misa de hoy nos animan a orar. Es bueno tomar cada una de ellas y reflexionar sobre lo que se dice, luego hacer algunas aplicaciones, según nos lo conceda el Señor. Consultaremos a los Padres de la Iglesia en sus reflexiones.

In the first reading, the one from Exodus 17:8-13, we see that the good people of God were engaged in war against Amalek and his evil people. Joshua led the fighting while Moses prayed at the top of a hill. “As long as Moses kept his hands raised up in prayer, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight.” It is good to see the community support Moses received when he got tired.

En la primera lectura, la de Éxodos 17:8-13, se ve que la gente buena de Dios estaba peleando contra los malvados de Amalek. Josué dirigía la batalla mientras Moisés oraba en la cima de un monte. “En cuanto oraba Moisés con manos levantadas en oración, Israel iba ganando. Pero cuando se cansaba y dejaba caer sus manos, Amalek iba ganando.” Es bueno ver que la comunidad le ayuda a Moisés rezar cuando ya estaba cansado.

In Psalm 35:1 David asks the Lord to “contend with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me!” We know that the Lord is always ready and willing to help us when we are in need. In the same Psalm, King David says: “O Lord, who is like you, who delivers the weak from him who is too strong for him?” When we are fighting evil, the Lord makes the fight his own. What a consoling thought!

En el Salmo 35:1 David le pide al Señor que “Disputa con los que contra mí contienden; Pelea contra los que me combaten.” Sabemos que el Señor siempre esta listo para ayudarnos cuando lo necesitamos. En el mismo Salmo, el Rey David dice: “ O Señor, ¿Quien como tu, que liberas a los débiles de aquel que esta demasiado fuerte para él? Cuando estamos combatiendo el mal, el Señor hace el pleito suyo. ¡Que consuelo es eso!

It is beautiful to see the unity in the people of God. Jesus prayed that we would all be one. It is especially helpful in time of need to let the community know what your needs are, so that they can be lifted up in prayer. When Peter was in chains, the community (the church) prayed for him, and he was miraculously delivered (Acts 12:5).

Es bello ver la unidad del pueblo de Dios. Jesús oro que todos fuéramos uno. En tiempo de necesidad ayuda mucho dejar a la comunidad saber lo que son tus necesidades, para que así las levanten en oración. Donde están dos o tres unidos en su Nombre, allí esta el Señor. Cuando San Pedro esta encadenado, la comunidad (la iglesia) rezo por él, y fue milagrosamente liberado (Hechos 12:5).

The Second letter of St. Paul to Timothy 3:14 and following, urges us to be faithful to what we have learned and believed. He reminds Timothy and the rest of us that the Scriptures are capable of giving us wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. St. Jerome once said: “Ignorance of the scriptures is ignorance of Christ”. Ignorance never helped anybody.

La segunda carta de San Pablo a Timoteo 3:14 y en adelante urge a los fieles ser fiel a lo que han aprendido y creído. San Pablo recuerda a Timoteo y a nosotros que las sagradas escrituras son capaces de darnos la sabiduría necesaria para la salvación por medio de fe en Jesucristo. San Jerónimo decía: “La ignorancia de la sagrada escritura es ignorancia de Cristo.” La ignorancia no ayuda a nadie.

St. Paul goes on to say “All scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

San Pablo nos dice que “Toda la escritura es inspirada por Dios y es útil para enseñar, para reprender, para corregir y para educar en la virtud, a fin de que el hombre de Dios sea perfecto y esté enteramente preparado para toda obra buena.”

In the Gospel of Luke, the Lord today gave us a very important teaching. If you have faith, God will answer your prayers. “He will see to it that justice is done for you speedily” (Luke 18:8). Ask for faith every day. It is interesting that Jesus wondered whether he would find faith on the earth when he would return. The answer lies in your heart.

En el Evangelio de San Lucas el Señor hoy nos da una enseñanza muy importante. Si tienes fe, Dios contestara tus oraciones. “Él vera que se te haga justicia rápidamente” (Lucas 18:8). Pide por fe todos los días. Es interesante que Jesús se pregunta si va a encontrar fe en el mundo cuando él venga. La contestación para esa pregunta esta en tu corazón.

St. Augustine (Letter 130) says that the Lord taught us to pray with much speaking, as if we were more likely to be heard, the more words we use in our prayer. This may seem strange, that although he cautions us against much speaking, he still urges us to pray since he knows what is needful for us before we ask for it. He said: “We should always pray and not faint.” The woman in the story made the unjust judge listen, not through any motive of justice or compassion, but through

insistence.

San Agustín (Carta 130), dice que el Señor nos enseño a rezar con mucho hablar, como si fuera más probable que nos escuchara, entre mas palabras usemos en la oración. Probablemente esto parezca extraño, que aunque nos urge precaución contra el mucho hablar, todavía nos urge a rezar siendo que él sabe lo que es necesario para nosotros antes de que lo pidamos. Dice: “Debemos rezar siempre y no desmayar”. La mujer en la historia hizo al juez injusto hacerle caso, no por motivo de justicia o compasión,

sino por

insistencia.

Cyril of Alexandria (Homily 119) says, the present parable assures us that God will bend his ear to those who offer him their prayers, not carelessly nor negligently but with earnestness and constancy.

Cirilo de Alejandría (Homilía 119) dice que esta parábola nos asegura que Dios prestara su oído a los que ofrecen sus oraciones, no sin cuidado ni negligentemente, pero con sinceridad y constancia. Esto debe de ser la calidad de nuestra oración.

St. Ignatius Loyola tells us that one of the causes of desolation is our

negligence in prayer (Spiritual Exercises # 322). It is important not to become tepid and slothful in prayer. Be on time. Be regular. Be constant. “Commit your way to the Lord. Trust in the Lord and he will act” (Psalm 37:5).

San Ignacio de Loyola nos dice que una de las causas de la desolación es nuestra

negligencia en la oración (Ejercicios Espirituales # 322). Es importante no hacerse tibios y flojos en la oración. Hay que estar a tiempo. Hay que ser regular. Y hay que ser constante, perseverando en la oración. “Entrégate al Señor. Confía en el Señor y él actuara” (Salmo 37:5).

Martyrius (Book of Perfection 75) notes that it is quite clear that God does not neglect us. Even if he makes us wait, he will nonetheless answer us and see to our case all of a sudden. When we pray all the time, we should not weary. We should eagerly cry out to him day and night, begging him with a broken heart and a humble spirit. “A humble spirit is a sacrifice to God and God will not reject a broken heart.”

Martyrius (Libro de Perfección 75) nota que claro es que Dios no nos ignora. Hasta cuando nos hace esperar, Él sin embargo nos contestara y repentinamente se fijara en nuestra causa. Cuando rezamos todo el tiempo, no hay que cansarnos. Con ganas hay que clamarle a Él día y noche, rogándole con un corazón quebrantado y un espirito humilde. “Un espirito humilde es un sacrificio a Dios y Dios no rechaza a un corazón quebrantado.”
