Esto empezó en diciembre de 2008, comouna simple sugerencia de José Luis Hernández:“¿Qué tal una pequeña sección sobre los ‘grandes’de los Campeonatos de Europa, para el libro de Bar-celona?” Yo tenía en la cabeza los cinco atletas quehabían ganado su prueba cuatro veces, y ademásFrancina Blankers-Koen, Irina Szewińska, HaraldSchmid. Breve y sencillo.

Pues bien, la lista subió hasta casi cincuen-ta. Lo incluía todo: la mayoría de las épocas, de laspruebas, hombres y mujeres. Entonces me di cuentade que había cometido un fallo. Había olvidado porcompleto incluir algún atleta de una de las nacioneseuropeas más importantes en el atletismo. Tuve queremediarlo. Y así completé el camino: he conseguidoincluir atletas de todas las naciones que han ganadoalguna medalla de oro, hay atletas de todas las dis-ciplinas, de todas las épocas y de ambos sexos. Asícorregí mi error, y he pasado seis meses haciendo deéste, el mejor repaso de los grandes atletas europe-os que puedo hacer.

IntroducciónLos Campeonatos de Europa de atletismo

se celebraron por primera vez en Turín en 1934. DeTurín a Barcelona (2010), muchos grandes atletashan ganado títulos en estos Campeonatos. Este esun repaso de los mejores de entre ellos.

Tengo que dar algunas explicaciones.No hay sitio, por ejemplo, para Livio Berruti,

Alain Mimoun, Janusz Kusociński, Nenad Stekic,Carlos Lopes, Anders Garderud, Mariano Haro, Wal-demar Cierpinski, Sergei Litvinov, Jan Železný. Nipara Mary Bienal-Rand, Martina Opitz-Hellmann,Tamara Bykova, Collette Besson, Irina Press, Jarmi-la Kratochvilová, Helena Fibingerová. Ni tampocopara Grete Andersen-Waitz, entre tantos y tantosotros. Ellos no ganaron títulos, aunque muchosganaron medallas.

The list went up to nearly 50. It was fairly all-inclusive: most eras, most events, men and women.Then, I realised I had made a ‘faux pas’. I had com-pletely forgotten to include any athletes from one ofEuropa’s major athletics nations. This I had toremedy. With that I went the other way: I have ende-avoured to include athletes from every nation to havewon at least one gold medal, there are athletes fromall disciplines, all eras and both genders. So I correc-ted my error, and have spent 6 months making thisthe best review of Europe’s great athletes that I canpossibly make.

I hope.

IntroductionThe European Athletics Championships

were first held in Torino in 1934. From Torino to Bar-celona (2010), many great athletes have won titles atthese championships. This is a review of the best ofthem.

I need to make some explanationsThere is no room, for example, for: Livio

Berruti, Alain Mimoun, Janusz Kusociński, NenadStekic, Carlos Lopes, Anders Garderud. MarianoHaro Cisneros, Waldemar Cierpinski, Sergei Litvinov,Jan Železný. No Mary Bignal-Rand, Martina Opitz-Hellmann, Tamara Bykova, Collette Besson, IrinaPress, Jarmila Kratochilová, Helena Fibingerová.There is no place for Grete Andersen-Waitz, amongstmany, many others. They did not win titles, althoughmany of them won medals.

So, the compilation is not without its limits.However, I have restricted this to athletes

He escogido un selecto lote de atle-tas anteriores a 1934, que están en esta categoría,pero otra vez tuve que restringirme: No se mencionaa Harold Abrahams, Eric Liddell, Douglas Lowe, ni alDr. Otto Peltzer, ni a Luigi Facelli, Edwin Wide, AlfShrubb, Jean Bouin o Peter O’Connor. Todos ellosmerecían una referencia, pero tuve que imponermerestricciones. Espero que de todos modos la etapaanterior a 1934 esté bien representada. Sí he inclui-do a Gunder Hägg, que nunca tuvo ocasión de com-petir debido a la guerra y a que después, los suecoslo excluyeron antes de 1946.

De los campeones de Europa Sólo se ha considerado a los que ganaron

títulos individuales, con una ponderación adicionalpor conseguir títulos olímpicos y/o mundiales, eincluso a batir records del mundo, aunque no esesencial.

Todo atleta que haya ganado más de untítulo individual tiene garantizada la inclusión.

Algunos ganadores una sola vez, y sin títu-los olímpicos ni mundiales, se mencionan si su victo-ria forma parte a mi entender del folklore de los Cam-peonatos de Europa, o si fue la culminación de unacarrera notable. Por supuesto esto es subjetivo, asíque lo lamento si he omitido a alguien que los lecto-res entienden que debería incluirse. No había tiempopara incluir a todos, ni tampoco espacio, estoy segu-ro de que el editor estará de acuerdo.

Progresiones anualesHe intentado incluir las mejores marcas de

cada año, con las posiciones en el ranking delmundo (según los anuarios de la ATFS), básicamen-te para la principal prueba del atleta, con referenciasa otras pruebas si me parecen significativas. Puedehaber huecos que el lector observará.

Presencia en CampeonatosTodas las competiciones en los eventos del

COI/IAAF/EAA están incluidos, todas y cada una delas participaciones están detalladas en términos declasificación final. No he incluido las marcas que nodieron lugar a clasificarse, salvo para indicar DNQ, ocorrió (por ejemplo) 1500m (ht) si procede.

Los demás campeonatos internacionalesestán limitados a mencionar sólo los campeones.Hay dos razones para ello: 1) Tengo resultados com-pletos de los Juegos de la Commonwealth, los del

Any athlete who won more than one indivi-dual title was guaranteed to be in this review.

With certain one-time winners (with noOlympic/World titles to their name) they are mentio-ned if their win was, I felt, a part of Euro Champions-hips ‘folklore’, or the pinnacle of a noteworthy career.This is, of course subjective, so I am sorry if I missedanyone who readers feel should be included. Therewas not time to include everyone, nor, I am sure myeditor would agree, is there room.

Annual ProgressionsI have attempted to include year-by-year

bests, with World Ranking positions (as according tothe ATFS yearbooks) for primarily an athlete’s majorevent, with references to other events if felt signifi-cant. There may be gaps that the reader will spot.

Championship recordsAll IOC/IAAF/EAA events are listed in full, any and allappearances and detailed in terms of final position. Ihave not included Non-Qualifying performances,other than to say they DNQ, or ran (e.g.) 1500m (ht)if appropriate.

Any other International Championships isrestricted to only mentioning winners. This is done fortwo reasons: 1) I have complete results of the (GBR)Commonwealth Games, The Mediterranean Games,The Ibero-American Games; but, not of the Francop-hone Games (FRA), nor the Balkan Games. So the-refore, 2) I felt it fair to be consistent in manner. The-refore, anyone who won titles in this Meets will havethem mentioned, but not places beyond first place.

Títulos nacionalesEsencialmente me he concentrado en las

pruebas standard (también en pista cubierta), perohe hecho excepciones si me ha parecido interesan-te. También se mencionan títulos en Campeonatosde otros países, habitualmente AAU (Estados Uni-dos) y AAA (Inglaterra).

Records nacionalesComo antes, me he centrado en las pruebas

standard (incluyendo pista cubierta), salvo que elatleta batiera un record del mundo en alguna noStandard, habitualmente distancias imperiales. Laindicación WR es para records del mundo, ER paralos europeos, y si no se dice nada es simplementerecord nacional.

10 mejores marcasEsto está claro. Las mejores 10 marcas en

la prueba principal (en algunos casos, en todas) delatleta. La velocidad del viento si se conoce, clasifica-ción, y una breve indicación del encuentro (p.e., OG,WC, NC, DNG). Si un atleta ha ganado títulos impor-tantes en más de una prueba, he intentado incluir las10 marcas en todas las pruebas relevantes. Obvia-mente en algunos casos ha resultado difícil conse-guir todos los datos que necesitaba, pero he ido todolo profundo que he podido. En ocasiones, puede queel atleta no haya llegado a competir diez veces en laprueba: Wooderson sólo corrió dos carreras de 3millas, y un 5000 metros; creo que Väätäinen sólohizo ocho 10000 metros; Privalova corrió justamenteocho 400 vallas, todos en el mismo año.

Inevitablemente habrá errores.

Mi principal problema está en las puntuacio-nes de decatlón y pentatlón. He intentado ser con-sistente, pero puedo anticipar que habrá equivoca-ciones. Pido disculpas por adelantado. Cualquierconsulta, adición o corrección será bienvenida.

Essentially, I have concentrated on standardevents (indoors as well), but I have made exceptionsif thought interesting, also National titles in otherNation’s Championships are mentioned (usuallyAAU/USA, and AAA/ENG).

National recordsAs above, I have stuck to standard events

(including indoors although this is incomplete),unless the athlete set a World Record in a non-stan-dard event (usually imperial distances). Any WR-isfor World Records, ER-is for European Records. AR-is for African Records (where appropriate). No indi-cator means it was solely a National record.

Top 10 performancesThis is straight forward. Top 10 performan-

ces at an athlete’s major (and in some cases, all),event. Wind speeds if known, positions, and a briefindication as to what the meet was (e.g.OG.WC, NC,DNG)

If an athlete has won major titles at morethan one event, I have attempted 10 for all relevantevents. Obviously, in some cases, resources haveproved hard to garner all the data I needed, but Ihave gone as deep as I can.

Sometimes, an athlete may not have con-tested an event 10 times: (Wooderson only ran two 3Miles races and one 5000m; Väätäinen, I think didonly eight 10000m’s; Stenroos only finished 6 Marat-hons, Privalova did just 8 400mH all in one year!)

Inevitably, there will be errors.

My main problem is with Decathlon andPentathlon scores with the changing of scoringtables. I have tried to be consistent, but I can foreseemistakes.
