RAFAEL FREIJEIRO

tintes rojos; uso del claroscuro; cuerpos lacerados;

injustamente desaprovechada, pues demuestra

reducido a negro, gris y blanco, falsas postales

bien ordenadas ideas, aunque sencilla semeje.

tan terriblemente expresivo, sobrecogedor (reparen
en obras como “¡Mamá!”, “Terrible aceptación” o
“Maternidad Sur”).
mi ya larga vida, he caminado museos, he asistido
a numerosas exposiciones y he vivido cuadros.
occidental directo a ninguna parte.

expresarse a gusto. Levemente, sin insistencias. Pura
pintura tan hermosa, tan personal. Felicidades

5De Freijeiro a Freijeiro

pinceladas blancas puedan dar volumen a las figuras;

serenidad. Explosión formal del color, trágica belleza,
zarandeadas formas, bronco nihilismo, deslumbrada

conforme a unos esquemas preconcebidos.

RAFAEL FREIJEIRO OCTOBER 1958, VIGO
Intuitive, temperamental and a tireless experimenter, Freijeiro is committed to total
freedom when researching forms and colours as he seeks a current language. His
restless character has driven him from the pencil to acrylic, after experimenting with
wax, oils and watercolours.
Freijeiro paints through pure feeling, far from conscious influences, by his creative instinct.
Compared to the truth and spots, there is clean execution, light and an essential medium,
drawing. His fantasy and dreamlike painting reflects human passions and miseries, a
reflection that forms part of his own life experience, in a sarcastic and concerned vision
that makes it unique.

For those of you who do not know the work of Rafael
Freijeiro, an initial warning: he is one of the most gifted
and important painters on the current art scene.
In a general catalogue of his work such as this, a
space had to be reserved for those works that have
not had the opportunity to be developed in their own
right and be displayed in public. That is the case of
four figurative production lines that may be easily
demarcated either by their technique or historical
references, or by their subject matter and that have
either remained just as notes or studio tests or as
works created for a fundamentally private sphere.
Apuntes de Realidad1OTHER INFLUENCES
For those of you who do not know the work of Rafael
Freijeiro, an initial warning: he is one of the most gifted
and important painters on the current art scene.
In a general catalogue of his work such as this, a
space had to be reserved for those works that have
not had the opportunity to be developed in their own
right and be displayed in public. That is the case of
four figurative production lines that may be easily
demarcated either by their technique or historical
references, or by their subject matter and that have
either remained just as notes or studio tests or as
works created for a fundamentally private sphere.
On the one hand, we have what I call the work with
Baroque roots, a series of realistic paintings when a
more gloomy and over-ornate vision predominates of
the image (palette of browns, ochres, raw and light
reddish hues; the use of light and shade; lacerated
bodies; still-life with 17th century references; etc.) and
which also reflects the influence of Constable, Lucien
Freud or Solana. In some cases, they are perfectly
finished works, such as El Torturado (Tortured) or El
Niño (The Boy), steeped with great expressive force and
an evocative capacity, and gaunt like Freud’s painting,
even if with a different, more Spanish, colour treatment,
if we put this pictorial tradition in terms of history. In
other cases, they are rather tests and experiments with
traditional techniques or subject matter, even though
they are modified by the introduction of resources that
are not frequently used. That is the case of an apparently
scholarly still-life (if we can use the farfetchedness of
this word in this case) where the support, a long wooden
board arranged horizontally, allows him to play with the
glance of the viewer, and the support becomes part of
the picture itself: following the direction of the board, the
fruit is arranged on a table that is only the combination
of a painted line and the grain of the board itself; a visual
game where the possibilities of the material are used to
build the picture.
English
A second work line is rooted in the avant-garde
expressionism, particularly in the German tradition
(the Die Brücke group: Kirchner, Schmidt- Rottluff,
Heckel…), but its subject matter is not the typical of that
movement, as it is a re-use of resources, techniques
and colour combinations fundamentally applied to
the still-life. The brush strokes are usually nervous
and undulating and the picture is made up of strokes,
with the drawing or the line, that is so characteristic of
his best known production, disappearing completely.
The colour is more sober, less luminous. And there
is no defined space for the main motif. The portrait is
a side that is almost unknown of Freijeiro and from
what can be seen from the small works piled up in
his studio, it may be unjustly ignored, as it shows an
unusual capacity to capture a face with barely a light
expression of the eyes or a simple facial gesture.
There is no technical uniformity in these works that
are surely tests and studies linked to the development
of other exhibitions uniformity in these works that are
surely tests and studies linked to the development of
other exhibitions and known works; that is, something
like a background work to perfect a specific technique
that he will apply in successive exhibitions. But
what is obvious is that, irrespective of the medium,
the portraits are finished and successful pictures,
brilliant for their capacity to capture character.
Finally, even though they have not been displayed
in a specific exhibition, the sea-scapes constructed
as black and white photographs have enjoyed some
fame in private circuits and have been consolidated
as a production line in their own right on a par with
the rest of his known work. They are prints of the Ría
de Vigo estuary, views that are about the relationship
between the city and the sea, its contradictions
and mutual necessities, the maritime landscape
constructed by man. Pictures where the colour is
reduced to black, grey and white, false historical post
cards or the merger between an evoked picture and
the current landscape reality. Historical portraits of the
façade of the city or the current state of the estuary.
The obvious conclusion is that, despite everything
that has occurred so far and all the varieties and
influences that he has been exploring, Freijeiro still
retains the possibility of developing new works to
surprise the audience and challenge it to try to reduce
him to a label, a movement, group or style.

Much more than a mere game. The artist has reasoned,
plunged into his memory where he has stored everything
he has absorbed, from the Gothic stained glass windows
to Germanic expressionism, sometimes ironic and
caustic, and not forgetting the deterministic realism of
Léger to Matisse’s lyrical quintessence.
Being, as he is, so personal, so completely
unmistakable, Rafael Freijeiro has nearly multiple
plastic reminiscences. And that is good. Another
thing, of course, would be that his work resembled
one specifically, as in art, as Eugenio d’Ors, everything
that is not tradition is plagiarism.
Drama Lúdico2 That trembling line, but firm at the end, what is already a
silhouetted paradox, a structure, shapes his deliberately
elementalized beings, that are not elemental, and
submerges them in an unusual atmosphere that brings
us to the “comic”, even if a deceitful way, as, although
everything seems naive in the art of this man from Vigo
called on to be important, nothing is when all said and done.
There is a great deal of reflection and a complex world of
ideas, of feelings, that Freijeiro has synthesized to achieve
pure plasticity between ingenious and caricaturising.
More than expressionist, he is neo-Baroque, so of
our time, but much less fleeting than Andy Warhol,
because in the American there is nothing more than
pure superficiality, brevity of the presumably pervading
poster, while there is incorruptible tenderness, along
with social criticism, in the Galician artist.
Freijeiro loves his creatures. He lives with them.
They form part of his lyrical world, which is vaguely
many and well ordered ideas, even though it may seem
simple. You therefore need to dialogue with it calmly
and extensively, in order to enjoy it in its whole truth.
If Torres García were here, he would say that it was worth
inventing constructivism for Freijeiro to fill it with feeling.
If Otto Dix or Grozt returned from their Germany between
the two wars, they would say that the peace reached in
45 was worthwhile, because at the far tip of Europe, near
to Finisterre, a reasoning yet angelic Galician was able to
internalise their messages and return them in the agreed
melody, a sustained E flat, with Mexican revolutionary
muralism behind him and perhaps, why not, to the
sound of a muiñeira folk dance, which is the dance of the
people who work and play. The ludic then drowns out the
dramatic to become the personal art of Rafael Freijeiro.

referential, with a dreamlike quality. And this painter,
even though he starts from reality, from the anecdote,
knows how turn it into something exceptional. The
viewer feels contemplated, scrutinised, almost as if the
gazes of his fantastic and fantasy creatures, which live
in spaces as wall-hangings, are boring through them.
There is something of the oriental in a truly dramatic,
disorderly, colourful, overcrowded world, from which
the creatures escape to levitate, even though it seems
that they are heavy, that they have density, just like in
the work of Chagall, another of his distant references.
Such complex, worked, reasoned painting, even though
the result is deliberately synoptic. Such a succinct
palette, with crimsons, blues, greens, blacks.
Let me be, like Freijeiro, a child-man that transforms a
vulgar reality into an indescribable charm. If you like his
painting at first glance, question your opinion, as this is
a deep plastic expression of highly pondered reasons, of
English
Freijeiro provides a peaceful, serene account of the
discoveries and ups and downs of day-to-day life. The
account is perhaps ironic, perhaps extrovert, but is
always narrated with tout court fluid graphics and
sensual, palpable, burning colours.
The eye of this worthy Spanish artist preserves the
grace of innocence and melancholic meekness – due
to its apparent chromatic luminosity – of an attentive
observer and cleverly captures whatever is moving
around him. The artist files this subtle criticism of
human events away in his memory where it is left to
mature among the multiple sensations stored away
there, and then chooses the colours from memory,
the inventive and compositive order of the masses and
volumes before beginning work on any tale.
Graphic images mark an internal, almost whispered,
journey through ideographic versions stored in the
memory file, in an apparently unstable topography
and fragmentation of internal conflicts, of new form
conventionalisms, of lyrical perceptions and metaphors
fed by a surprising chromatic passion.
When you see the works of Freijeiro, produced by blocks,
by series of blueprints with clear margins, without
volatilising the union or the adjustment, where colours
merge by inertia, like grooves or display cabinets
moved by the structural need to stress and highlight,
rather than filling in spaces. You immediately discover a
worthy artist, who has culturally learned from the great
masters, yet free of any rhetoric, who prefers a hair’s
breath graphic texture, delicatism, who condenses the
values of the chromatic paste (mainly acrylic
colours) without ever smiting the strength and
expressive freshness.
Freijeiro’s formal repertoire is unleashed with a love
discovered in light, in the extremely poetic representation
of the surrounding reality, a representation that would
be defined as independent, not pigeonholed in this or
that artistic movement or current. This Spanish artist
does not search for new patents outside its history,
but rather his production and with honesty in his work
establishes a clear threshold between the infinite and
the temporariness of life and the history of man. He
seeks the internal truth and recreates “the reality of
the world in the novelty of its feeling” in a free and full
chromatic key where the beats of his heart are always
in harmony with the execution of any painting.

The search for one’s own art, not merely as vehicle to
stand out but rather as a real depiction of a different
internal way of seeing things, has led Freijeiro
over the years to build his painting on the base of
innovation, moving away from the pseudo-tradition
avant-garde or “aesthetic sensation” trends, and
along the elusive path of personalism. His pictorial
work, that was previously closely linked to the neo
Baroque (as F. Pablos called it), strikes the people
who knew the work of the painter and surprises
the people who discover it, in both cases not by a
premeditated fervour of bewilderment, but rather as
the result of an individual conscience.
The new compositions are a clear search of the
individual at the two levels in which the painter believes
it is divided: External-Internal.
The textures, which evoke minerals or metals, are
filled with brightness and are modelled on urbanized
formations or on physical details of our society.
However astounding they may appear, they show a
world that is breaking down whi9le covered by the mask
of appearance. Recent images, such as those of Blade
Runner, by Ridley Scott, where the city transforms into
nocturnal, chaos and decay, come to mind to relate
the works with the landscape visions of El Greco or
the decomposed figures of Picasso’s EL GUERNIKA.
Yet Freijeiro makes them subtle, eclectic, as if covered
by a veil (appearance) that softens our external level,
standardised by today’s society that tries to make the
other level, the internal, disappear and thus negate
the individual. The internal level appears loaded with
nuances and life, in complex metaphysical connections
with the cosmos, nature. However, it tends to disappear
at times in the unequivocal signal of internal death.
Freijerio fights against the “bad use” of the basic
principles of western societies, which convert the
human being into a “number-being” and advocates
for the Nietzsche distinction of the Apollonian and
the Dyonisan as the basic composition of any human
being, together with its metaphorical expression: a new
perspective for a new painting.

I left the Espacio gallery for the Arte de Caja Madrid
where an unusual Galician artist, Rafael Freijeiro, was
exhibiting. Art lovers must not miss the unbending
independence of this painter, his dazzled retina,
his mastery of his trade, the spontaneous abstract
expressionism; the nihilism turns his creations into a
challenge to the darkness of the beyond. The rain, the
wild seas, the coasts of life and death, the clamour of the
green have turned Galicia into the landscape of the land
and soul for writers and artists. Rafael Freijeiro, with a
long list of successes behind him, returns to Madrid.

“Always the same immovable but flexible principles as
the basis of his works. Always the same desire to obtain
conclusions from the juxtaposition, from the tension

creates his work as the consequences of this dialectics,
where he is his own spokesman and forbearingly works on,
until he finds a new one.”

El paisaje ensamblado en la memoria poética4
The artist who investigates, who probes possible paths
from references, sensations and findings that are
never as unexpected as may be first thought, obviously
evolves and excels in his art. And this is the case of
Rafael Freijeiro, whose exhibition is a surprising
novelty and with a nearly fleeting beauty.
With respect to this one, at least two previous stages
point towards the constant search of this artist
from Vigo who has already made his mark, and in a
notable way, on the Galician art scene, without need
for radicalization, manifestos or joining more or less
ephemeral avant-garde trends. He began with a tangent
expression with American pop, although loaded
with irony and tenderness, which made it typically
ours. This was followed with his attempts on printed
paper; using newspapers as the background to
his chromatic exercises, with an almost fleeting
palette in tones and light speckles, showing a
Romantic influence. And as a result of both, he
has now arrived at these informal delights, with
lines, colours, fragments that come together, to
give us a coherent painting, which is both modern
and traditional. That is to say, after he had clearly
taken on board, everything his voracious sensitivity
made him learn.
FREIJEIRO, DREAMY LYRICISM
Greens, whites, crimsons, blues, in fickle polygons,
that are related or structured. Formal insinuations
that do not materialise. Palette displays dominated
by the happy orchestration that the painter knows
how to print on his intentions. And the outcome
is accomplished, coherent and not just a happy
coincidence. The exhibition shows that there is a
knowing creator, who experiments with variations
on a single ideal subject, in very different formats,
to express himself as he wishes. Lightly, not
insisting. Pure lyrical delicacy, that is evanescent
and even dream-like, although with surrealist
type convulsions.
Because there is also a poet in the painter, who
expresses feelings, sensations, moods with colour.
With the open secret of observing, experimenting,
working and destroying what does not take, he
achieves such beautiful, such personal painting.
Congratulations to Freijeiro and thanks for the
stunning show of his work.

They are few painters today who are capable of
reducing objects to their bare essentials, capturing
the figure using the minimum of lines or colour brush
strokes, or summarising the human figure with just
a few lines and the effects of the light. The quality of
this painter can be seen in the details and subtleties
with which he works and how he achieves the difficult
task of turning the hugely complex into something
simple. A precise and brilliant hand is needed to
execute any of the works in this exhibition. He is an
innovative, radical and even provocative painter in the
current art scene. Yet, this is not due to a pretentious
desire to be innovative, but rather to his thirst for the
De Freijeiro a Freijeiro5 classical and to his desire for beauty. Today’s art has
moved either towards mere decoration or towards
pure conceptualism. The concern is whether the piece
of art goes with the colour of the sofa in the lounge, or
it expresses the metaphysics of time in nothingness or
pseudo-philosophical-moral worries in false realities,
about society and the individual, in other words,
trifles. Art has become something vain and banal,
empty, where the ingenious or surprising is the canon
and where repetition and placement have ended up
worn out and boring. This has turned artists such as
Freijeiro into true innovators. His works have always
sought the beauty within, even in those where critical
elements are introduced. He focuses on the visual, on
the figure, on colour and, therefore, on the meaning:
what the works says or expresses.
This exhibition is a continuation of the one held at
the CFV (Club Financiero de Vigo) a few months ago,
which marked the start of a new cycle within his
NOTES ON A NEW FORM
artistic career and was characterised, in the same way
as the present one, by an extraordinary and uniform
quality. Yet this new cycle does not mean a change
of style of the artist, but rather a new way in which
Freijeiro’s pictorial philosophy has metamorphosed.
The features that define his painting continue to still
be the same today as in the cycle that ended with
the exhibition at Caixavigo in 1998. There is, then,
an underlying and unchanging style that is used to
develop and exploit different artistic forms.
Compared to the previous cycle, the infinite variety
of colours remains, but, now, with a dominance of
darker, mainly cold shades, yet with exceptions where
the warm colours are also duller. The black line does
not appear in the drawing. This form requires that it is
white or greyish, or even that it is completely diluted
so that the mescal of colours, the chromatic shades
and the white brush strokes can give volume to the
figures; and thus achieve a sculpture-like feeling to
the paintings that are similar to previous works, such
as “Camiño a Ningures” (Path to Ningures). The flat
application of colour, which brought the form to stained
glass windows and to Pop Art, has been replaced by
mixture and overlaying. This introduces light nuances,
volume and therefore the notion of space, depth, which
only appeared in previous forms in an indirect way. The
predominance of solitary figures, and materialised by
the small format of the pictures, is a characteristic that
appeared in previous works and items that still have not
been shown or which have been purchased by private
collectors. The paintings are full of abstractions: some
objects are simply hinted at – the visual essentialism
and the schematics persist – or, they are there,
merely, because we want to find them. All the irony
and outer criticism has been diluted, together with the
symbolism, but the sense of humour and the critical
elements remain present, even though they are focused
towards the intimate. His interest has returned to the
subject and the circumstances, its environment, have
English
been eliminated. He sought to achieve the Beauty and
not focus on the shocking, the dramatic or the terrible.
A subtle philosophical influence of Matisse continues
to be present, with a hint now of Goya and Morandi in
the still-lifes: immobility and intimacy. This, along with
another interesting novelty, the presence of serenity,
compared to the dynamics of previous compositions,
allows a different perspective of the painter towards
the object and its importance to be sensed; perhaps a
different, more peaceful inner state.
Decontextualisation, preciseness, tranquillity, space
and volume characterise this new form based on a
pictorial philosophy that has not varied, but rather has
only been transformed. It is yet another form in which
he reveals himself, because what you may not know is
that, in his studio, new appearances crowd in and the
next one may be another investigation into the current
or another transformation.

He is one of the most interesting Spanish painters
of recent years. Not merely because of his
repeated successes. What is more important is
his independence, the quality of his work. Mario
Antolín highlighted this in his great Dictionary. His
exhibition at Feima, in Calle de Fernando el Santo
(Madrid), impressed me. The latest work of Rafael
Freijeiro has something bristly about it. Suggestive
in fact. It is a tremendous fast-moving meditation.
Trágica Belleza6
He has overcome the abstract expressionism to set
off with his brushes on new routes as if they were
uncertain love poems. There is a hint of lyrical poetry,
of an ecological lament, on his canvases, which are
divided into two areas. One depicts the waste, the
rejects, the rubble and the pollution that threaten all
of us. The other, nature under attack that resists, to
the point of being drowned, suffocated. It is chaos
next to serenity. Formal explosion of colour, tragic
is breaking from page to page, from spot to spot,
from colour to bartered colour, on the haughtiness of
a pallet that caresses thought.

Futuro Imperfecto7
At his last exhibition (Futuro Imperfecto (Imperfect
Future), Club Financiero de Vigo, March 2008), we
did not really know whether Freijeiro was an abstract
or figurative painter. It might be better not to start
there, but rather forget that separation and allow the
work to enter us without prejudices, without filters
that fog our vision or sieve the information according
to preconceived lines. In either case, it is true that
what is important lies in ambiguity and the process.
A work that cannot be classified along traditional
lines requires its own interpretation that reveals it as
it is and which explains how it says what it says. And
the effort by the viewer to take part in the work and
complete it, be part of it, is worth the redundancy. The
composition process is crucial. What apparently is just
painting is in reality the result of a sequence of steps
where shattered materials, photography and acrylic
painting are combined. The resulting image tackles
the consequences of the prior material, randomness,
the look of the painter, the determinations of a
photographic camera and final checking of the acrylic.
Thus, the final image does not depend on the exclusive
hand of the artist, but also on the variable, random
and accepted external conditioning factors in each
case to which the painter is subjected with infinite
limits that he crosses to be a pioneer. First of all, the
object (a metal board, wood or any other material) is
selected and he starts off by studying its texture, size,
veins of colour, even the face hidden in it, and so on.
This object is then used for a first work of emphasis
and concealment: an initial layer of paint brings out
the most interesting (the stains, roughness or images
that he wants to highlight); once this first process is

that he will mount on an appropriate medium; finally,
he again works with acrylic on the photograph, until
the image is set according to how it is, its own nature

or abstraction. The image will always be a crossbreed.
In reality, nothing more than colour. If it is flat or three

mental landscape, if an image or idea, if a metaphor
or symbol, it is no more that a reductionist attempt

meaning is its own process, the variable and completely
individualised conditions of its own production. How
can you judge according to its final state when that is
the consequence of a development that is random to
a certain degree and coherent with itself. Looking for
explanation for what is a pictorial strength in itself,
presence of the colour and visual expressivity, is not
logical and is a desperate attempt to translate into

Rafael Freijeiro was born in Vigo in 1958.
He began drawing at a very young age
encouraged by his father, an artist by
vocation, a skilled draughtsman and poet.
He considers himself to be self-taught.
The Vigo Arte Xoven Galega exhibition
drove him to continue painting when he
was selected from among a large number
of participants. Immediately afterwards,
he joined the Assi collective, a group of
young artists from the old neighbourhood
of Vigo, with whom he put on his first
individual exhibition in 1992.
He has exhibited at more than 100 venues
over his indefinable career.
Prizewinner of the Honour Medal of the
BMW Painting Awards 2009.
