Vocabulary

1. blasting : (verb: to blast): to party or have a good time; also: to use a gun

2. ain’t never : (verb with adverb) have never “ ain’t never crossed a man” means “have never double crossed or cheated a man”

3. punk: (noun) someone who is weak and worth very little, someone whom others don’t respect

“ watch how you’re talking:” (verb) “be careful of what you are saying”

5. homies: (plural noun. singular: “homey”) A shortened form of “home boy.” A “home boy” is a verygood friend, someone who is like a family member to you. “Home boy” is also the name of someone whois in the same gang as you are.

“ you and your homies might be lined in chalk:” When someone is shot and dies, the police draw anoutline around the person’s body with chalk. When the body is taken away, all that remains on the roador pavement is the shape of the body. The narrator is threatening you by saying that you and your friends might be murdered.

Instructions to use the Chart:

• Divide the class in groups of 3 or 4 ( maximum ),

• Photocopy the Chart and give every team one chart• One member from team 1 will give a letter and a number for team 2. For example: (Letter c, Number 3 ) • One member from team 2 has 5 seconds to make two sentences with the same meaning using both words, too and

enough. (She is too stupid/ She is not intelligent enough )

• Now a member from team 2 picks a number and a letter for team 3 and so on until all teams have made up their sentences.

• Very frequently there’s one student in a team who wants to give all the answers, don’t let the same student give theanswer. Everyone should participate.

• The typical mistake will be to use the wrong word order or the positive idea with too like “ she is too intelligent” or “ she is not stupid enough”. If they have a mistake they don’t get the point.

• If one student who already answered gives another sentence the team doesn’t get the point.

• If they take more than 5 seconds they don’t get the point. (You can decide if 5 seconds is enough, depending thelevel and the class, when the student starts saying the sentence you stop counting to let the student concentrate onthe answer).

The Writing Process:

A Paragraph is a group of sentences that tell about one idea or thing. The first word should be indented ( it starts a

little to the right of the left-hand margin). The main idea is usually introduced in a sentence called the topic sentence,which usually states an idea or attitude about the topic known as the controlling idea of the whole paragraph. You canfollow this formula to write your topic sentence : “ A limited topic ( Music ) + a specific impression ( helps people relax) = topic sentence “ . The first part is the topic and the second is the controlling Idea.

Study the topic sentences that follow. Circle the controlling Idea and underline the topic in each sentence.
