LA PEGATINA DOSSIER 2013

La Pegatina es un proyec-to musical que inicia sus andaduras en 2003 bajo el nombre de Pegatina Sound System. Fue en Montcada i Reixac (Barcelona) donde dieron sus primeros con-ciertos y cosecharon sus primeros adeptos a pesar de ser tres miembros y no te-ner estudios musicales, sólo intuición.Al cabo de un tiempo, se da-rían cuenta que aquello que tocaban era rumba y que con esos ritmos se podía hacer bailar a grandes multitudes.

De 2003 a 2007 realizaron unos 100 conciertos a lo largo de Catalunya y Gali-cia. Fueron cuatro años de aprendizaje intenso a base de bares, salas pequeñas, trenes, buses y calle. Cual-quier escenario era bueno y cada seguidor importante. En 2007 se dieron cuenta de que tenían suficientes canciones como para editar algo en serio y hablando con Che Sudaka y Manu Chao, padrinos y conseje-ros del grupo en sus inicios, empezaron a construir su primer álbum. Cómo no, tuvieron en su disco debut (Al Carrer!, autoeditado) la colaboración de ambos artistas, que se implicaron

en el proyecto y les hicieron ver que era factible vivir de la música autogestionándo-se. Ahí empezó La Pegatina.

Los años 2007 y 2008 sir-vieron para crear el sonido que seguiría a La Pegatina en épocas posteriores. A los tres componentes iniciales se unían bajo, trompeta y acordeón, haciendo llegar nuevas melodías al gru-po. Durante este proceso de maduración del sonido pegatinero, se gestionó lo que es el segundo disco de la banda (Via Mandarina, Kasba Music).En este momento, los seis toman consciencia de que para vivir de la música hay que repartirse todas las tareas y funcionar como empresa de management y comunicación a la vez, asumiendo cada uno las funciones necesarias. Ya no es sólo tocar. También apa-rece la necesidad de tener una discográfica que asuma su interés por la música en descarga gratis vía internet, una fórmula que hizo que su ópera prima llegara a toda la península e incluso les hiciera viajar a Suiza, Francia e Italia en tan sólo un año. na, la que empleó la fórmu-la necesaria para que Via Mandarina pudiera seguir el camino de su antecesor pero, además, fuera vendi-do en media Europa.En 2008, antes de grabar este segundo álbum, se aprecia la explosión del gru-po a nivel mediático. Hasta aquel entonces, La Pegatina era conocida a nivel alter-nativo entre jóvenes pero a los medios no les quedaba claro que el grupo era todo un fenómeno, algo que lue-go no dejarían de destacar. El 23 de octubre de 2008, La Pegatina se convierte en el primer grupo autoedita-do, autoproducido y auto-gestionado que llena la sala Apolo de Barcelona, con capacidad para 1200 per-sonas, y lo hace diez días antes del concierto. Los medios quedan atónitos.

Con la salida al mercado de Via Mandarina (Kas-ba Music), el grupo se da cuenta que cada vez son más grandes los escenarios que se encuentra y que ne-cesita un apoyo rítmico en el escenario. Es por ello que se ficha a un batería y se hace más necesaria la pro-ducción que año tras año tienen con Gambeat (bajis-

ta de Manu Chao), con el que se encierran en una sala cada enero para preparar un directo que sea eficiente en cualquier lugar del mundo.El trabajo sigue dando su fruto y en 2009 llegan por primera vez a los 100 con-ciertos anuales, con lo que en 2010 tienen que dejar en manos de Sonde3 Pro-ducciones el management del grupo, puesto que ya no pueden abarcar el nivel de trabajo que requiere hacer tal cantidad de bolos.En 2010 vuelven a repetir la cifra de 100 conciertos y dan un salto cualitativo a nivel de prensa nacional, puesto que su gira Mira que mira Tour les hace consoli-darse como el grupo más de moda en Catalunya, pero también en otras co-munidades como País Vas-co, Galicia y Madrid. A su vez, participan en festivales de gran magnitud como el Lowlands de Holanda o el Festival d’Été de Québec (Canadá), hecho que hace que también sean el grupo con más proyección inter-nacional español, exportan-do algo tan nuestro como la rumba y el sol.

En 2011 nace Xapomelön (Kasba Music) y el proyec-

to acaba de despegar. Los siete músicos ya tienen un estilo muy definido y lo demuestran en este álbum.Es en este año donde La Pe-gatina participa en los tres festivales más grandes de España: ViñaRock (25.000 personas), Getafe En Vivo (65.000) y Arenal Sound (30.000). Y se convierte en la revelación de los tres, bajo el asombro de progra-madores y medios.Ya no son una novedad en Catalunya sino un grupo consolidado, son un grupo cotizado en Holanda, don-de también agotan entradas en ciudades como Ámster-dam o Utrecht. Además, hacen una gira en China para más de 20.000 perso-nas y se convierten en 13 los países conquistados. Su proyección internacional está en alza, así como su consolidación peninsular.

En 2013, tras dos años de conquistar plazas sin des-canso, sale a la luz Eureka! (Kasba), un álbum editado en diez países. Producidos por Marc Parrot, el grupo da otro salto musical en su carrera y se dispone a tratar de tú a tú a las grandes es-trellas internacionales. Lo tienen clarísimo.


¿QUÉ HAN HECHO? - CIFRAS, RÉCORDS Y MÁSCIFRAS DE VENTAS

El público de La Pegatina crece día a día, de forma exponencial. El boca-oreja les ha funcionado desde sus comienzos. De hecho, las cifras de ventas y descargas por Internet no pueden ser más envidiadas.Del primer disco, Al Carrer! (2007), han vendido 10.000 copias y se han descarga-do más de un millón de canciones. De Via Mandarina (2009) las descargas suben a los dos millones y las ventas superan ya los 12.000 ejemplares. En cuanto a su último disco, Xapomelön (2011) en apenas un año ha llegado a los tres millones de can-ciones descargadas y a las 15.000 copias vendidas.Estas cifras, aparte de demostrar que el proyecto de La Pegatina es algo que mo-tiva a muchas personas, también dan fe de que las descargas gratis no son incompati-bles con las ventas en tiendas de discos o en los mismos conciertos.

CONCIERTOS

Si el proyecto de La Pegatina ha trascen-dido más allá de Catalunya es debido también a la gran variedad de idiomas que emplean en sus canciones: castellano, catalán, inglés, francés, gallego, italiano, portugués y euskera. Esto ha hecho que, al final, al público no le importe en qué idioma canten sinó la música que hacen y la calidad del espectáculo que ofrecen.Estan a punto de llegar a los 700 con-ciertos, con más de 100 conciertos en cada uno de los cuatro últimos años. Han conquistado 13 países: China, Canadá, Dinamarca, Alemania, Holanda, Bélgica, Liechtenstein, Suiza, Polonia, Francia, Ita-lia, Ecuador y Andorra.Y en lo que se refiere a nuestro país, La Pegatina ha tocado en 2011 y 2012 en al-gunas de las fiestas y festivales más grandes como son Getafe En Vivo, ViñaRock, Are-nal Sound, San Fermines, Semana Grande de Bilbao y de Vitoria, Día de Navarra o La Mercè, entre muchos otros. Y en todos han sido la revelación gracias a su despar-pajo y descaro en directo, que les ha valido muchos nuevos adeptos.

REDES SOCIALES

Una de las bazas de La Pegatina ha sido siempre su proximidad y su dominio de las nuevas tecnologías, que ya no son tan nuevas. En 2003, La Pegatina era proba-blemente uno de los primeros grupos de música que tenía página web, y eso que casi no tenían ni canciones. Por aquel en-

tonces ya las regalaban, porque entendían que era la forma de que todo el mundo tu-viera acceso a escucharles y a poder captar-los para venir a los conciertos.Actualmente, son uno de los grupos espa-ñoles con más seguidores en Facebook con casi 150.000, en su canal de Youtube las vis-itas se suman por millones, y forman parte de casi 20 redes sociales, algunas exclusivas de países concretos como Orkut en Brasil o Weibo en China. Incluso han ofrecido algunas charlas para grupos sobre cómo uti-lizar estas herramientas.

EXPECTATIVAS

El revuelo que ha creado La Pegatina en todos estos grandes festivales ha provocado que las cantidades de público que arrastren sean multitudinarias. Ya queda poca gente que no sepa la adrenalina que se puede lle-gar a desprender en uno de sus conciertos. De hecho, es seguramente la gran esperanza de la música mestiza, tal como se entendía hace unos años, aunque más derivada hacia la rumba de aquí que hacia la música del otro lado del charco.Su lado más internacional también ha co-sechado grandes triunfos, haciendo que sus temas sonaran en los grandes festivales de Europa como Lowlands y Zwarte Cross (Holanda), Polé Polé (Bélgica), Le Bout du Monde y el Festival du Poupet (Fran-cia), así como en festivales de renombre en el mundo como el Xi’hu Festival (Hang-zhou, China), el Festival d’Été de Québec (Canadá) o el Busker’s Festival de Quito (Ecuador).Para 2013, La Pegatina siente que todas las miradas de los grandes agentes musicales estan puestas en ellos. La salida de Eureka! es un gran punto de partida hacia una nue-va etapa en la que el grupo va a acabar de despegar y a acabar de convencer a todos.

ACCIONES SOCIALES

A parte de lo que son propiamente sus con-ciertos, La Pegatina se ha dedicado a ofrecer su música para causas más sociales. Es un ejemplo de ello la colaboración con más de diez cárceles españolas y europeas para tocar para reclusos o también la canción Minha Rua (del disco Via Mandarina), interpre-tada a la vez por el Grupo Eureca de Per-cussão de São Paulo (Brasil).Esta colaboración nació a través del proyec-to Meninos e Meninas da Rua de Brasil, organización que intenta dar protección y ocio a los niños huérfanos de las favelas brasileñas. Los derechos de autor de esta canción se destinan al proyecto y a la causa.

¿DÓNDE TRIUNFAN? - RETOS INTERNACIONalesESPAÑA

No quedan ya dudas de que La Pegatina es un grupo imprescindible en cualqui-er festival estatal. Es una muestra de ello el hecho de que repetieran en 2012 en ViñaRock o Arenal Sound, por ejemplo, siendo el di-recto más destacado en am-bos casos.Son pocas las grandes fi-estas y festivales que les quedan por hacer en Es-paña, por lo que el grupo ha pasado ya la frontera que hay entre revelación y consolidación. Todos los promotores saben que La Pegatina nunca falla, que son una apuesta segura de buen hacer, espectáculo, responsabilidad y trabajo al servicio del público.En 2012, además, han conseguido acabar de con-quistar al público gallego, vasco y madrileño.

EUROPA

En dos años, La Pegatina ha realizado unos 50 concier-tos en Holanda. Gracias a su desenfado en los escenarios más grandes del país (Lowlands, Zwarte-Cross, Dunya Festival, Great Wide Open, Festi-val Mundial de Tilburg, etc.) han conseguido sor-prender más que algunas de las estrellas con las que compartían cartel como Santana, Black Eyed Peas, Arcade Fire, Jamie Cullum, Blondie, Sepultura, etc. Gracias a ello han ejecutado un par de giras de salas en el país con llenos absolutos y entradas vendidas meses antes de su actuación, en salas de aforos de más de mil personas.La intención ahora es que este éxito se extienda más allá de Holanda, llegando a Alemania, Bélgica y Di-namarca, sobre todo, du-rante 2013. Por otra parte, está tam-bién el público italiano y francés, que los sigue aco-giendo de forma fenomenal aunque por un circuito

diferente. La Pegatina, en las zonas germánicas y an-glosajonas, forma parte del circuito pop-rock. En cam-bio, en el área mediterránea se encasilla dentro de músi-cas del mundo. Esto hace que los públicos sean muy diferentes y que el éxito sea diferente en cada país, puesto que no es igual el público pop-rock, más familiar, y el público de músicas del mundo, casi todo joven.

OTROS CONTINENTES

Sin duda, si hay alguna cosa que caracteriza el proyecto profesional de La Pegatina es el saber trabajar y saber dónde y a qué apostar en cada momento. En estos momentos, lo que tienen claro es que su techo sigue sin aparecer y que, una vez consolidados como grupo grande en España y en Holanda, ha llegado el momento de conquistar el continente asiático.En octubre de 2011 ya plantaron las primeras se-millas en Asia, a raíz de una gira de ocho conciertos en dos semanas por China.Durante sus actuaciones hicieron bailar a más de 20.000 personas, algo in-édito para los promotores chinos, que nunca habían vivido algo así. De hecho, si hay un mensaje claro del público chino es que se están empezando a abrir culturalmente tras muchos años de letargo.La Pegatina se encontró con la primera generación que podía asistir a conciertos y disfrutar de ellos. El grupo aprovechó el momento a lo grande, como siempre hacen en situaciones im-portantes, y movió todo lo que se les puso por delante. De hecho, fueron portada varias veces en algunos de los periódicos más impor-tantes de China, gracias a sus espectáculos que, según la prensa, habían traído el sol a China.A partir del éxito chino se han abierto muchas otras

puertas como Japón, Mala-sia y Corea, proyectos que se están acabando de conc-retar en festivales de grande envergadura, lo cual hace pensar que La Pegatina podría ser el primer grupo español que conquiste el mercado asiático a lo grande.Mientras todos estos proyectos toman forma, también crece la esperanza de poder visitar Latinoamé-rica en breve, puesto que casi un 50% de las descar-gas de canciones del grupo pertenecen a Argentina, México y Colombia. En este sentido, el 2012 La Pegatina hizo la primera incursión en Ecuador con muy buenas sensaciones. El disco “Eureka!” se edi-tará en diez países, entre los cuáles hay Argentina, Chile y Uruguay. El resto son Es-paña, Japón, Francia, Ale-mania, Bélgica, Holanda y Luxemburgo.

Creíamos que esto del mestizaje barcelonés ya cotizaba a la baja cuando nos cayó encima La Pega-tina. ¿Más panfletos multi-culti para la generación Erasmus? ¿Neo-rum-ba extremada con actitud punk? Bueno, lo asombroso de este grupo de Montcada i Reixac es que no in-corpora ningún ingrediente inédi-to a las recetas mestizas: hay rum-ba condal, aceleración ska, cumbia amiguista y otros aditivos latinos. Pero el miércoles agotó el papel de Apolo, y es una de las bandas cata-lanes que más público atrae. Dos detalles: La Pegatina dedi-ca jornadas laborales completas al cultivo de las redes sociales de in-ternet (el nuevo boca-oreja), donde acumula miles de amigos y afilia-dos, y ofrece unos directos frenéti-camente diseñados para dejar a la clientela sin fuelle. Público vein-teañero (o menos) y mucha chica. Actuaciones en las que el grupo no pierde el tiempo: como los Ramo-nes (que Joey y Johnny, en el cielo estén, perdonen la atrevida cita del cronista), empalman y condensan el repertorio, y son capaces de cla-varte 30 piezas en hora y media.

Esa cantidad de material indica que el grupo interpretó en Apolo (sesión de Caníbal Sound System) sus dos discos, Al carrer (2007) y Via mandarina (2009), al completo más algunas piezas nuevas destina-das al tercero. Material que invita

a la efervescente contemplación vi-tal (Qué bonito es el amor), la exalta-ción callejera (Gat rumberu; ¿por qué en el mundo de la rumba hay tanto catalán pre-fabriano?) y, a veces, in-troduce mensajes sociales, pero no grandes proclamas, sino canciones sobre, por ejemplo, las calamidades de Rodalies (Los niños de la Renfe). La juventud no está reñida con el ta-lento. Lo han demostrado algunos genios a lo largo de la historia y ha vuelto a quedar claro en Barcelona, durante la final del Concurso Inter-nacional de Música Maria Canals de Barcelona, que ha ganado el pia-nista Denis Zhdanov, un fenómeno ucraniano de solo 22 años. «Para mí significa mucho este premio, uno de los más importan-tes que hay, porque me ayudará a darme a conocer en España y otros lugares», destacó ayer tras recoger el galardón en una ceremonia en el Saló de Cent del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona. Zhdanov se llevó 20.000 euros del primer premio pero, co-mo él mismo reconoció, valora mu-cho más la posibilidad de empren-der una serie de conciertos y recita-les que obtiene el ganador del Maria Canals, así como la grabación de un disco con el sello Naxos con obras de Antoni Soler. En Catalunya actuará en el Auditori, el Festival de Torroe-lla y el Palau de la Música Catalana. Pero su primer recital como gana-dor lo dará hoy mismo en el Saló dels Miralls del Liceu, donde interpreta-rá la Sonata núm. 3 de Chopin. Tam-bién actuarán en el mismo acto el resto de finalistas: el finlandés Mar-ko Hilpo y la rusa Olga Kozlova. Zhdanov (Chernigov, 1988), que actualmente estudia en la Academia de Piano de Imola, con el profesor L. Margarius, y en la Academia Na-cional de Música de Kiev, con Boris Fedorov, dió sus primeros pasos co-mo pianista con Danilova Valenti-ne. Zhdanov ha conseguido nume-rosos premios y menciones. Entre ellos destaca el Concurso de Piano para Jóvenes Arthur Rubinstein de Polonia, que ganó en el 2007. H

Maarwie beter luistert naar de plaat ont-dekt een parel vol frisse ‘rumba ca-talana’, flamenco en energiekepunky pop. Het jonge zeskoppigeLa Pegatina vormde met haar ener-gieke ‘urban rumba-show’ eenhoogtepunt op het afgelopen Low-lands-festival. Haar Gat Rumberugroeide uit tot een festivalhymne,een soort mestizo-variant op SevenNation Army van The WhiteStripes. „We werden totaal verrastdoor de respons”, vertelt trompet-tist Axel Magnani (25) vanuit thuis-basis Barcelona.„Duizenden mensen dansten oponze muziek: indrukwekkend.”Het aantal - vaak multiraciale -mestizobands dat vanuit smelt-kroes Barcelona de laatste jarendoorbrak, is nauwelijks nog te tel-len: Zulu 9.30, Amparanoia, Dus-minguet, La Troba Kung-Fú, CheSudaka, La Kinky Beat, Cheb Ba-lowski, Macaco, Ojos de Brujo.

Mestizo, Spaans voor ‘gemixt’, iseen mengelmoes van latin, Zuid-Amerikaanse en Zuid-Europesevolksmuziek, ska, reggae, punk,rock, dance en hiphop. Eind jaren‘90 ontstaan in Barcelona, maarschatplichtig aan Mano Negra, eenkleurrijke Frans/Spaanse patchan-ka-band die een decennium eerderde podia onveilig maakte. Zangerwas Manu Chao, een Spaanse Parij-zenaar, die tegenwoordig vanuitBarcelona opereert en als godfathervan de mestizo kan worden aange-merkt. Ook is hij mentor van band-jes zoals La Pegatina, die haar art-work modelleert naar Mano Negra,

dezelfde anarchistische instellingheeft, en met zanger Rubén Sierrazelfs een vergelijkbaar stemgeluid.Manu Chao, die als solo-artiest mil-joenen platen verkocht, is eenvriend en leermeester, vertelt Mag-nani. Net als Gambeat, de vaste bas-sist van Chao. „Ze geven advies, enGambeat heeft een tijd met onsmeegespeeld.” Zowel patchanka alsde verwante mestizo zijn gewor-teld in straatmuziek. Veel bands be-gonnen op straat. „In Barcelonawordt het de muzikanten met ver-gunningen helaas steeds moeilijkergemaakt”, weet Magnani. „De tradi-tie sterft langzaam uit.” Ook onlos-

makelijk verbonden met mestizo:sociaal engagement, met anti-globa-listisch boegbeeld Manu Chao voor-op. „Het gaat ons allereerst om eenfeestje bouwen”, zegt Magnani.„Maar we doen ook regelmatig meeaan benefiets, laatst nog voor kans-loze kinderen in Peru. En op ‘ViaMandarina’ staat een song waarvande rechten naar een project voorstraatkinderen in Sao Paolo gaan.”La Pegatina geeft haar muziek gra-tis weg via haar site. ‘Via Mandari-na’ werd meer dan een miljoenkeer gedownload.„Onze muziek moet toegankelijkzijn voor iedereen”, vindt Magnani.

„Ook hopen we zo mensen naaronze concerten te lokken.” Voordatde groep aan haar uitgebreide Ne-derlandse tournee begon, werd inBarcelona de derde cd afgewerkt,die in maart verschijnt.Magnani wil er weinig over kwijt.„Er doet een drummer mee, dieook meetoert, en Amparo Sanchez(van Amparanoia) heeft eengastrol. In Nederland proberen weveel nieuwe songs uit, kom maarens kijken.”

‘Besparing kan goed opkruising Letschertweg’Het zal menigeen niet zijn ontgaandat op de kruising Burg. Letschert-weg en Hultenseweg te Tilburg,een ‘tijdelijke’ verkeersmaatregel isgeplaatst. ‘Winkels op zondag open:dat is niet sociaal’Laat de winkels op zondag zoveelmogelijk dicht. Gun de mensen dieer werken ook een sociaal leven.Het is toch al zo hectisch allemaal.En wordt er nou op jaarbasis zo-veel meer verkocht? Onder de noe-mer van toerisme moeten de win-kels op zondag open. Maar er is vol-gens mij weinig toeristisch aan. Alsje per se weg moet, ga dan op be-zoek bij vrienden. Lijkt mij veel so-cialer. De groten kunnen het beta-len, maar de kleine winkeliers moe-ten ook open en kunnen maar am-per of niet uit de kosten komen.Volgens mij een doodsteek voor dekleine zelfstandige, want het lijkter hier op dat alleen groot telt enniet aleen in de detaihandel. Je zietoveral maar megabedrijven ont-staan. En wordt het dan beter?

Op Lowlands blies de Spaanse band La Pegatina het tentzeil van de Limatent eraf en met een nieuw album in het vooruit-zicht is het tijd voor een clubtour langs alle grote poppodia. CJP sprak met de bandleden Axel Magani (trompet) en Ro-main Renard (accordeon) over hun komende clubtour, man-darijnen en de buurvrouw.

In het Backstage Hotel in hartje Amsterdam hebben de mannen van La Pegatina de stoelen bij elkaar geschoven. De een tokkelt ontspan-nen op een gitaar, de ander legt alles vast op camera. Ze zijn voor de tweede keer in Nederland en hebben voor de komende weken een reeks optredens op het programma staan. Afgelopen zomer barstte het feest al los in een overvolle Lowlandstent. Romain: ‘Het was on-gelofelijk om al die mensen zo uitbundig te zien dansen. We wilden daarom snel weer terugkomen naar Nederland. Dat mensen enthou-siast zijn, merken we nu nog steeds. De Melkweg in Amsterdam, het Paard in Den Haag en Tivoli De Helling in Utrecht zijn al uitverkocht.’

Urban rumbaLa Pegatina beschrijft hun muziek als urban rumba, maar wat moe-

ten we ons daar in hemelsnaam bij voorstellen? Romain: ‘Als echte Catalanen zit de rumba in ons bloed. Urban staat voor energieke, sterke en gekke muziek. Daarnaast hoor je ook andere stijlen terug op onze albums; van ska tot disco en van reggae tot rock.’ Axel vult aan: ‘Als wij op het podium staan, creëren we een sfeer die mensen aan het dansen maakt. Het publiek in de zaal moet minstens zoveel plezier hebben als wij op het podium. Als je naar onze albums luistert, hoor je dat we niet alleen Catalaans zingen, maar ook Spaans en Portugees. Op onze nieuwe album hebben we ook een Franstalig en Engelstalig nummer opgenomen. We maken muziek voor iedereen en niet alleen voor mensen die de taal verstaan.’

Fuck off, neighbourVoor hun debuutalbum Al Carrer! werkte de feestband samen met muzikanten van Manu Chao, Gambeat en Che Sudaka. Op het tweede album Via Mandarina hoor je bijdrages van D’Callaos en El Puchero del Hortelano. Axel: ‘Daarnaast hebben we nummers die spontaan zijn ontstaan. Zo speelden we een keer in een bar in Frank-rijk en we maakten nogal veel lawaai. Daardoor werd de eigenaar van die tent gebeld door de buurvrouw; of het wat zachter kon. Het

publiek begon toen spontaan “fuck off, neighbour” te schreeuwen. Deze buurvrouw werd toen het onderwerp van een van onze num-mers.’ De titel van het album, Via Mandarina, klinkt niet alleen zonnig, het heeft volgens Axel ook een diepere betekenis: ‘Via staat voor de weg die wij als band bewandelen. Mandarina staat voor de felle kleur oranje. Deze kleur staat voor ons.’

DownloadenVia Mandarina is inmiddels 1,5 miljoen keer gedownload en vanaf 15 maart kunnen we genieten van een nieuw album, dat tevens gratis te downloaden is op hun website. Romain: ‘We hoeven niet veel te ver-dienen aan onze albums, maar proberen op deze manier mensen naar onze concerten te krijgen. Dáár hopen we natuurlijk wel dat iedereen ook een echte cd koopt. We staan het liefst iedere dag op het podium, zodat mensen ons kunnen zien. En dat zo vaak als ze willen.’

Hey hows it going?Really well thanks!

How is your third album Xa-pomelon different from your previous albums?Many elements make the third album a different one. First of all, we have a new musician in the band, Sergi on the drums (Our two first album didn’t have drums). With this new instrument, we could explore more styles of music like Hip Hop, Cumbia, Ska, Rock. Furthermore, drums make this album a powerful one. After 210 concerts in two years (tours between 2009 and 2010), we learnt so many things and met so many people. For the first time, some of our songs are about how we feel during the tour and what we think about this “pro-fessional world”.

How did you think of the name of the album?

The name of the album is a refer-ence to a world imagined by us and is created thanks to two very important elements, the two first albums (Al Carrer!, 2007 and, i Via Mandarina, 2009). It also reminds us of a circus, a party and the atmospheres we try to share during our concerts.

How was it collaborating with Joan Garriga, Amparo San-chez and Eloi Gomez for this record?It is by listening to Joan Garriga (Dusminguet and La Troba Kung Fu) and Amparo Sanchez (Am-paranoïa) why some people in La Pegatina wanted to play music. As we played with them during the last two years (In France and in Catalo-nia), we now know them personally. They are now friends, and when we asked them to collaborate with us on our album, they just say “OK! That sounds great!”. They are really

lovely and approachable people. In this third album, there is song with Hip Hop collaboration. Eloi Gomez is the one! We really liked his project (In*digna) and contacted him. Before recording anything, we invited him on stage to party with us. He liked the atmosphere and had a good moment with us...So he came to record with us.

You have certainly been busy, playing over 450 gigs. Can you recall any memorable nights?Every concert is special. We play for different people from the age ranges 7 years to 77 years, so you have different points of view. We really like to play in every kind of venue. In the smallest bars there is more intimacy with the audience, we can improvise and laugh a lot. In a festival, there are so many people, so much energy and good vibes! Two years ago, we played in France at Les Feux de l’été festival.

We were playing with big French bands. In the afternoon before the gig, we went to play in the festival camp, walking between tents. We began our concert at 11pm in front of 200 people and finished it in front of 14,000!!! When the festival ended, we went to the village near the festival with people of the organisation and some of the public and played music all night with them in a little bar. It was an amazing night!

Every year we play in a small bar called Café Auriense in Galicia. About 120 people danc-ing and singing two hours with us! In the middle of the show, the roof is sweating because of the heat!In Holland this year, we played at Lowlands festival. Nobody knew us, but at the end of the show there were about 8000 people in front us... 3000 of them had extracted

plants of the decoration of the festival and were shaking it in the crowd!! After the “official show”, the organisation asked us to play on another stage in the festival. A pirate stage, where we improvised a 45 minute concert, playing Manu Chao’s and Nick Dale’s songs.

Who are your influences?We play Urban Rumba. It would be a mix of Catalan Rumba with other styles (Cumbia, Merengue, Hip Hop, Reggae, etc...). In the band, we all listen to Dusminguet, La Troba Kung Fu, Amparanoïa, Muchachito, Manu Chao, Che Sudaka. But some people prefer Rock N’ Roll, Electronic music, Pop Music. That is what make La Pegatina so special.

If you could have a swimming pool filled up with anything, what would it be?We already filled a swimming pool

up with confetis last year, it was great! Maybe we could put 300 people in the swimming pool and play music with them.

If you were invisible for the day, what would you get up to?We couldn’t meet people.... It would be boring!

What does the rest of the year hold for La Pegatina?We are beginning the Xapomelon Tour 2011, and will be releasing our third album on the 15th of March. More gigs, more people to met, more parties, and more tiredness!! But we will always be “rumbeando” the more we can.

La PegatinaProbably one of the busiest and hard working bands from Spain, La Pegatina (roughly translated to the Sticker) has just released their third album entitled Zapomelon and are ready for another stint of touring.

La Pegatina’s third record called Xapomelon is out now.

How was your Plastikman Live set @ Womb in Tokyo?it was really good thanks, as to be expected in Japan. the audience are so open to technology, music, flashing lights and craziness, they were really taken back by it. it was the last Plastikman Live show of 2010 (15 shows world wide). the idea of Plastikman Live was to do shows around the world, keep it special but get as many people as possible to see it within the 15 in-ternational dates. When we did the Contact tour, we only did 9 or 10 in the end so we felt there could have been a few more, i’m really happy with the amount that we did. in the future i do want to do more but with the show being so new and it being quite technologically advanced we have to be careful how it all works together and touring .

How many people does it take to put the whole thing together?that’s a funny question, i’m just writing an email to the whole gang, i think if we really counted the amount of people that had a part

to bringing it to the stage over the year, there was about 15-20 key people who were involved . We had friends building software patches and a lot of customisations and this and that. it’s quite a wide spread dedicated team. now it was up and running we are usually on tour with 9 to 10 people for each show. Once everything is plugged in and checked over with a sound check that takes anything from 2 hours up to 4 to 8 hours. its like building a circuit board every time, circuit boards are complicated, it only takes one loose solder joint to make the whole thing fall apart.

What’s the difference between you and your Plastikman pseudonym?it’s changed over the years, i think Plastikman has always been the pseudonym that i hid behind, its my alter-ego. its more connected to the early years as opposed to of 2010. now i’m quite well known and i’m out there DJing, partying with the crowd. Plastikman was always a project where i locked myself away in the studio and

became closely connected to my machines as possible. that’s why on stage i’m not in front of people for Plastikman Live, i’m supposed to be introverted and locked away in my studio on stage you get glimpses of me every now and then. One minute i’m there and then i’m not. the key idea with Plastikman Live is to use synchronised audio and video footage to heighten the experience. When i’m DJing as i’m playing other peoples music there is a connection between me the DJ and the music. With Plastikman Live i wanted people to get sucked away into the visuals so it was a lot more about the machines and the music.

I spoke to Jeff Mills a few months back and we were discussing lighting, visuals and the new technology that is available. Many clubs at the moment choose to have stan-dard lighting that was avail-able years ago. Both of you are pushing the technology that is available today.it s like you said Joe, its about

taking people away. in the early days Jeff and i were lucky enough to see that time when just playing music in a dark club with a strobe light allowed you to take people away, we are both interested in get-ting back to that point by using the technology that is available today. Heighten it and take it further. tak-ing people away doesn’t just mean being in a pitch black room, its about taking people away from the reality that they are in, forgetting about time and place.

You also have the Plastikman Arkives box set coming out in 2011, can you tell us more about that?it’s the full archives of Plastikman to date, it’s a collection . its me clearing out my archives and bring-ing it to the people. Plastikman used to be my most well known project but Hawtin as a DJ has taken over that role over the last ten years. I find myself connected to so many new fans and support-ers who saw Plastikman Live for the first time this year. Arkives will be a companion piece that will go

with the Live Show, it’s supposed to bring everyone out there up to date with who Hawtin and Plastikman are. For me to move forward full speed with Plastikman next year, i needed to compile it, box it and put it out there so the information and music would be out there for people to listen to and read. it’s a large collection, it comes with a 96 page book, 12 CD’s and DVD’s and there is a vinyl set.. it’s the biggest project that we have ever done at my label, you can imagine trying to produce thousands of these hoping it will sell, we have made it very limited. each order is personalised for every customer. We pulled out all the stops, for those who get it and buy it i think they will be very happy.

You are always really busy, what do you do when you are chilling out, I presume you have a family to tend to?i have a 3 year old son and i see him when i’m in Berlin, his mother takes care of him a little bit more than me because of my travel schedule. My life is pretty normal, i

have been travelling and doing this for 20 years. Luckily i love what i do and usually when i wake up i jump out of bed and continue working on the project i was doing the night before.

If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?i would like to see more people conscious of the future. By say-ing that it takes in a lot of things, besides just thinking about today and themselves, people would think more about others, where we are going and future generations.
