A los 40 años de su fundación, el Concurso Internacional de Piano de Santander continúa ilusionadamente su labor de promoción de los jóvenes de mayor talento de los cinco continentes. Y aún más en esta XVII edición, puesto que la hemos dedicado a la memoria de Alicia de Larrocha. El presente DVD contiene el resultado de estos trabajos: las interpretaciones de Ah Ruem Ahn, János Palojtay y Tamar Beraia, tres extraordinarios pianistas que ofrecen una perspectiva joven y renovada de las grandes obras del repertorio. En Santander tocaron ante un jurado de destacadas personalidades de la música y ante un público muy experimentado. Actuaron además con músicos de prestigio – el Cuarteto Casals, las orquestas Real Filharmonía de Galicia y Sinfónica de Madrid y los maestros Juanjo Mena y Jesús López Cobos – en el marco del Festival Internacional de Santander. Estoy segura de que su paso por el Concurso representará un impulso importante en sus carreras.

Forty years after it was created, the Santander International Piano Competition continues with great pleasure the promotional work of highly talented young musicians of the five Continents. And even more especially in this XVII edition dedicated to honor the memory of Alicia de Larrocha. The enclosed DVD is the result of such work: the performances of Ah Ruem Ahn, János Palojtay and Tamar Beraia, three extraordinary pianists who offer a young and fresh perspective of the repertoire’s great works. These young pianists played in Santander for a Jury of great personalities of the music world and a knowledgeable audience.They also played accompanied by other prestigious musicians – the Casals Quartet, the Real Filharmonía de Galicia and the Symphony Orchestra of Madrid as well as with Maestros Juanjo Mena and Jesús López Cobos – within the framework of the Santander International Festival. I am sure that their participation in the Competition will represent an important step forward in their careers.

Suwon, Corea del Sur, 1984. Ah Ruem Ahn inicia sus estudios musicales en la Escuela Secundaria de Artes de Kaywon y, más tarde, en la Universidad Yonsei en Seúl licenciándose en música. Continúa su formación en Europa en la Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, donde obtiene el Diploma en Artes. En la Hochschule für Musik Detmold obtiene el Diploma de Concertista.

Ah Ruem Ahn ha participado en clases magistrales con profesores como András Schiff, Menahem Pressler, Bernd Goetzke, Ralf Gothóni o Arnulf von Arnim.

Ah Ruem ha tocado junto a orquestas como la Sinfónica de Madrid, la Filarmónica de Marruecos, la Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Dortmunder Philharmoniker, la NWD Philharmonie entre otras.

Numerosos premios en concursos internacionales forman parte de su palmarés: en el año 2011 recibe el Tercer Premio del Concurso

Segundo Premio y Medalla de PlataSecond Prize and Silver Medal

Internacional de Piano Schubert de Dortmund y el Segundo Premio y el Premio del Público en el Concurso de la Filarmónica de Marruecos (Rabat); en 2010 es ganadora del Gran Premio Internacional ANIMATO (París), donde además recibe reconocimientos a sus interpretaciones de Chopin y Schumann y el Premio del Público. En Italia, se impone ese mismo año en el Premio Internacional de Piano Stefano Marizza (Trieste). También es ganadora del Primer Premio en Smetana (Pilsen), que además le otorgó el premio

especial a la mejor interpretación de Bedrich Smetana. En 2009 recibió en Berlín el Primer Premio, además de dos premios especiales, en el Concurso Paul Hindemith: a la mejor interpretación de una sonata clásica y a la mejor interpretación de una composición de ese compositor.

En 2012 le fue otorgado el Segundo Premio y Medalla de Plata en el XVII Concurso Internacional de Piano de Santander Paloma O’Shea.

Suwon, South Korea, 1984. Ah Ruem Ahn started her music studies at the Kaywon Secondary School for the Arts and later at the Yonsei University in Seoul obtaining a degree in music. She continues her education in Europe at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover receiving a Diploma in Arts. At the Detmold Hochschule für Musik she obtained a Soloist Diploma.

Ah Ruem Ahn has participated in master classes by professors such as András Schiff,

Menahem Pressler, Bernd Goetzke, Ralf Gothóni and Arnulf von Arnim; Ahn has also played with the following orchestras: Madrid Symphony Orchestra, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Dortmunder Philharmoniker, NWD Philharmonie, Morocco Philharmonic, etc.

She was winner of numerous prizes in international competitions. In 2011 was Third Prizewinner at the Schubert International Piano Competition in Dortmund and Second Prize and Audience Prize at the Morocco

(Rabat) Philharmonic Competition; in 2010 was awarded the ANIMATO (Paris) International Grand Prize as well as the Audience Prize, additionally receiving recognition for her Chopin and Schumann performances.

That same year, in Trieste, Italy, she was awarded the Stefano Marizza International Piano Prize. She also won First Prize at the Smetana (Pilsen) International Piano Competition and additionally was

granted the Bedrich Smetana Special Award for the best performance. In 2009 she was First Prizewinner in Berlin in addition to receiving two special prizes at the Paul Hindemith Competition: to the best performance of a classic sonata and of a Hindemith piece.

In 2012 Ah Ruem was awarded Second Prize and Silver Medal at the seventeenth Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition.

Budapest, Hungría, 1987. János Palojtay comenzó a tocar el piano a la edad de cinco años. Con tan solo trece, fue admitido en la Escuela Especial para Jóvenes Talentos de la Academia de Música Férénc Liszt de Budapest, un año más tarde en la Escuela Secundaria de Música Béla Bartók, donde estudió composición. En 2003 fue el ganador del concurso de improvisación de dicha escuela. Ganó el segundo premio en el Concurso Internacional Chopin en Budapest y la Academia Liszt, donde se graduó en 2011, le otorgó el Premio Sári Bíró. Entre 2007 y 2009 estudió en el Mozarteum de Salzburgo, Austria.

Palojtay ha actuado en Seúl, Nueva York y en varias ciudades europeas, participando en festivales como el Encuentro de Música y Academia de Santander, MusMA European Broadcasting Festival y Schubertiade 2008 en Schwarzenberg (Austria). Ha recibido clases magistrales de prestigiosos profesores como Ferenc Rados, Dmitri

Bashkirov, Murray Perahia y András Schiff. János Palojtay es miembro de un grupo de jóvenes músicos dirigidos por Gábor Csalog que se dedica al estudio y la interpretación de obras de György Kurtág, quien asistió personalmente a una actuación y comentó sus composiciones con los jóvenes músicos.

Desde 2008 Palojtay toca regularmente con la Orquesta del Festival de Budapest. En 2011 le fue concedido el Premio Gundel, que le dio la posibilidad de tocar con la Orquesta de la Sociedad Filarmónica de Budapest, bajo la dirección de Christopher Hogwood.

En agosto de 2012 es proclamado Tercer Premio y Medalla de Bronce ex aequo en el Concurso Internacional de Piano de Santander Paloma O’Shea.Actualmente cursa estudios de posgrado en la Musikhochschule de Stuttgart con Kirill Gerstein.

Budapest, Hungary, 1987. János Palojtay started to play the piano at the age of five. Just turning thirteen years old, he was admitted to the Special School for Exceptional Young Talents of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.

A year later he was admitted to the Béla Bartók Music Secondary School where he studied composition. He was a winner of the school’s improvisation competition in 2003. A year later he obtained Second Prize at the International Chopin

Competition in Budapest and received the Sári Bíró Memorial Award of the Liszt Academy, where he graduated in 2011. Between 2007 and 2009 he studies at the Mozarteum Salzburg (Austria).

Palojtay has performed in Seoul, New York and other European cities and participated in festivals such as Encuentro de Música y Academia in Santander, MusMA European Broadcasting Festival, Schubertiade 2008 in Schwarzenberg (Austria). He has received master

classes from prestigious professors such as Ferenc Rados, Dmitri Bashkirov, Murray Perahia and András Schiff. János Palojtay is a member of a group of young musicians led by Gábor Csalog dedicated to studying and performing of works by György Kurtág, who personally attended a performance and discussed his compositions with the young musicians.

Since 2008 Palojtay regularly performs with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. In 2011 he was awarded the Gundel Prize in

Budapest which gave him the possibility of performing with Christopher Hogwood conducting the Budapest Philharmonic Society Orchestra.

In 2012 János won Third Pr ize and Bronze Medal ex aequo at the Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition.

Currently he is a postgraduate student at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart studying with Kirill Gerstein.

Tbilisi, Georgia, 1987. Tamar Beraia nació dentro de una familia de músicos.

Con cinco años recibió las primeras clases de piano de su madre y en 1992 inició en su ciudad natal sus estudios de piano en el Liceo Paliashvili para niños con talento.

En 2003 ingresa en el Conservatorio Estatal Saradzishvili donde concluye sus estudios en 2009 con el diploma superior en la categoría de piano. Obtiene las becas Fundación M. Tariverdiev (2000), Lisa Leonskaja (2003) y Presidente de Georgia (2001-2003). Continúa su formación en la Escuela Superior de Música de Lucerna donde obtiene el “Meisterdiplom” (Diploma de Concertista) en 2012. Clases magistrales con Ivan Klánsky, Werner Bärtschi y Wen-Sinn Yang.

Tamar Beraia ha ganado el Primer Premio de Concurso Nacional de Gabunia (Georgia, 2003) y de numerosos concursos internacionales, entre ellos el Nueva Estrella (Alemania, 2010); el de Tbilisi (Georgia, 2005); el Heinrich Neihauz (Rusia, 2000); el de Dúos de Piano de San Petersburgo (Rusia, 1997) y el B. Dvarionas en Vilna (Lituania, 1997).

En agosto de 2012 ha ganado el Tercer Premio y Medalla de Bronce ex aequo y el Premio del Público Sony en el Concurso Internacional de Piano de Santander Paloma O’Shea.

Desde su infancia ha tocado a dúo con su hermana Natia Beraia, con la que fue finalista con diploma en el Festival Nuevos Nombres (Moscú, 2000) y finalista en el Festival Bravo Bravissimo de Cremona (1997).

Tamar Beraia ha actuado con la Orquesta Estatal de Brandenburgo (Frankfurt) bajo la dirección de Wachtan Macavariani en Frankfurt y en Potsdam, así como a dúo con su hermana en la Sala Max-Joseph de Munich. Ha ofrecido recitales en Deutschlandsberg (Austria, 2006) y en Chicago, en la gran sala de la Universidad DePaul, concierto que fue transmitido en directo por la radio y grabado por el Estudio Fazioli. En 2008 actuó en Vincennes (Francia) dentro del ciclo de conciertos “Prima La Musica”, actuación grabada y difundida por el canal Mezzo. Recitales en el Museo Liszt de Budapest (2009) y en el Festival Bodensee (Lindau, Alemania, 2011) donde además actuó como solista de la Nueva Orquesta de Basilea. En 2012 hizo su segunda actuación en el Festival de la Academia de Música de Baviera en Marktoberdorf (Alemania). Tamar Beraia was born in 1987 in Tbilisi

Tbilisi, Georgia, 1987. Born into a family of musicians, Tamar Beraia received her first piano lessons from her mother in 1992 when she was five years old.

In 1992 Beraia entered the Paliaschwili Lycée for talented children in her native city. In 2003 she entered the Saradzischwili State Conservatory concluding her studies in 2009 with a superior piano diploma.

Tamar Beraia was granted the following scholarships. Tariverdiev (2000), Lisa Leonskaja (2003), and that of Georgia’s President (2001-2003). Beraia continued

her education at the Lucerne School of Music receiving the “Meisterdiplom” in 2012. Masterclasses with Ivan Klánsky, Werner Bärtschi and Wen-Sinn Yang.

Tamar Beraia has won the Gabunia National Competition (Georgia, 2003) as well as numerous international competitions including the New Star (Germany, 2010); Tblisi (Georgia, 2005); Heinrich Neihauz (Russia, 2000); St. Petersburg Duo (Russia, 1997), and B. Dvarionas in Vilnius (Lithuania, 1997).

In August 2012 she has been awarded Third Prize and Bronze Medal ex aequo as well as the Sony Audience Prize at the Seventeenth

Since being a child Tamar has been playing with her sister Natia Beraia, with whom she was finalist and recipient of a Diploma at the New Names Festival (Moscow, 2000) and Finalist at the Bravo Bravissimo Festival in Cremona (1997).

Performances with the Brandenburg (Frankfurt) State Orchestra under the baton of Wachtan Macavariani in Frankfurt and Postdam. She appeared at the Max-Joseph Hall in Munich playing duo with her sister. She has also offered recitals in

Deutschlandsberg (Austria, 2006) and in Chicago, at the Grand Hall of DePaul University, recital that was broadcast live by radio and recorded by the Fazioli Studios. In 2008 Beraia performed in Vincennes (France) within the concert series “Prima La Musica”, performance recorded and broadcast by Mezzo Channel. Recitals at the Liszt Museum in Budapest (2009) and at the Bodensee Festival (Lindau, Germany, 2011), where she also performed as soloist with the New Basel Orchestra.

In 2012 she performed for the second time in the Bavarian Music Academy in Marktoberdorf (Germany).

juanjo mena Real Filharmonía de GaliciaLa Real Filharmonía de Galicia (RFG) inicia su actividad en 1996 en el Auditorio de Galicia (Santiago de Compostela), donde presenta su temporada estable de conciertos. Su primer Director Titular fue Helmuth Rilling (1996-2000), a quien sucedió Antoni Ros Marbà (2001-2012). Actualmente, Paul Daniel es su director titular y artístico.

Además del maestro compostelano Maximino Zumalave (Director Asociado) y de Christoph König (Principal Director Invitado) también dirigen la RFG otros directores como Juanjo Mena o Hansjörg Schellenberger. De la misma manera, junto a la RFG han actuado intérpretes como Frank Peter Zimmermann, Natalia Gutman, Joaquín Achúcarro o Eldar Nebolsin y cantantes como Teresa Berganza o Thomas Quasthoff.

La RFG se ha presentado en numerosas ciudades españolas y ha realizado giras internacionales por Austria, Alemania, Francia, Brasil, Argentina y especialmente Portugal. Paralelamente, la vocación pedagógica de la RFG se canaliza mediante conciertos didácticos para escolares y la Escuela de Altos Estudios Musicales y su Curso Avanzado de Especialización Orquestal, con los músicos de la RFG como profesores.

The Real Filharmonía de Galicia (RFG) began its activity in 1996 at the Auditorio de Galicia (Santiago de Compostela), where it performs regular concerts season. The first Principal Conductor of RFG was Helmuth Rilling (1996 to 2000), followed by Antoni Ros-Marbà (2000 to 2012). Paul Daniel is currently its artistic and principal conductor.

Besides Maestro Maximino Zumalave (associate conductor) from Santiago de Compostela and Christoph König (principal invited conductor), the RFG also performs under the batons of Juanjo Mena and Hansjörg Schellenberger. Other outstanding musicians have worked with the RFG such as Frank Peter Zimmermann, Natalia Gutman, Joaquín Achúcarro, and Eldar Nebolsin, and singers such as Teresa Berganza and Thomas Quasthoff.

The RFG has performed in numerous Spanish cities as well as through international tours in Austria, Germany, France, Brazil, Argentina, and especially Portugal. Ha dirigido prestigiosas formaciones, como la Oslo Filharmonien, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Orchestre National de France, Orchestra Filarmónica della Scala, BBC Scottish Symphony, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI de Torino, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Dresdner Philharmonie y las más importantes orquestas sinfónicas de los Estados Unidos: Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Boston, Cincinnati y Los Angeles Philharmonic, entre otras muchas.

Juanjo Mena is one of the most renowned Spanish conductors on the international circuit. He was Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao (1999-2008) and Principal Guest Conductor of the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova (2007-2010). He is now Principal Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Bergen Filharmoniske Orkestra.

He has conducted prestigious orchestras, as the Oslo Philharmonic, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Orchestre National de France, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, BBC Scottish Symphony, RAI Torino, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi or Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. His brilliant career in America has led him to conduct the Symphonic Orchestras from Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Houston, Cincinnati and Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others.

JESÚS LÓPEZ COBOS ORQUESTA SINFÓNICA DE MADRIDLa Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid (OSM) se fundó en 1903 y se presentó en el Teatro Real de Madrid en 1904. En 1905 inició una fecunda colaboración de tres décadas con Enrique Fernández Arbós, en las que también ocuparon el podio figuras como Richard Strauss e Igor Stravinski. Bajo Arbós se definieron los objetivos de la OSM, aún vigentes hoy: renovación del repertorio, apoyo a la música y los músicos españoles y creación de nuevos públicos.

En 1981 la OSM pasó a ser la orquesta estable del Teatro de la Zarzuela .Ha sido dirigida por maestros como Peter Maag, Pinchas St einberg, Krzysztof Penderecki y Mstilav Rostropovich así como por los directores españoles más relevantes. Luis Antonio García Navarro fue el Director Titular de la OSM de 1999 a 2002 y Jesús López Cobos de 2002 a 2010. Kurt Sanderling, como Director Honorario y Cristóbal Halffter, como Compositor Residente, refuerzan la dirección artística del conjunto. Desde 1997 la Orquesta atiende las necesidades musicales de los espectáculos del Teatro Real del que es Orquesta titular hasta el año 2016.

The Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid (OSM) was established in 1903 and presented at the Teatro Real of Madrid in 1904. In 1905 a fruitful collaboration of three decades with Enrique Fernández Arbós started; during that time, figures such as Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinski also took up the baton. The basic goals of the Orchestra, also valid today, were defined under Arbós: updating the repertoire, supporting Spanish music and musicians, and acquiring new audiences.

In 1981 the OSM became the resident orchestra for all productions at the Teatro de la Zarzuela. Besides having worked with all the most important Spanish conductors, the OSM has collaborated with maestros such as Peter Maag, Pinchas Steinberg, Krzysztof Penderecki and Mstilav Rostropovich. Luis Antonio García Navarro was the Principal Conductor of the OSM from 1999 to 2002 and Jesús López Cobos from 2002 to 2010. At the head of the ensemble are also Kurt Sanderling as Honorary Conductor and Cristóbal Halffter as Resident Composer. Since 1997, the OSM provides the music for every production at the Teatro Real, and will be its Resident Orchestra until 2016.

Jesús López Cobos realizó los estudios de dirección coral y orquestal en la Academia de Música de Viena. Galardonado en los Concursos de Besançon y Copenhague, debutó en Praga como director sinfónico y en Venecia como director de ópera.

Fue Director General de Música de la Ópera de Berlín (1981-1990) y también Director Artístico de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Cincinnati (1986-2001), de la que ahora es Director Emérito, y Director Artístico de la Orquesta de Cámara de Lausana (1990-2000). Durante seis años fue Principal Director Invitado de la Filarmónica de Londres y en 2010 completó un mandato de siete años como Director Musical del Teatro Real de Madrid y Director Titular de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, con la que ofreció su propio ciclo de conciertos.

Ha dirigido regularmente todas las grandes orquestas europeas y americanas, además de participar en los más prestigiosos Festivales internacionales. Entre los muchos reconocimientos que ha recibido destaca la Cruz al Mérito, Primera Clase, de la República Federal de Alemania por su contribución a la cultura alemana.

Jesús López Cobos followed choral and orchestral conducting studies at the Music Academy of Vienna. After winning the competitions of Besançon and Copenhagen, he debuted in Prague as symphony director and had in Venice his operatic debut.

He was General Music Director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin (1981-1990) and also Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Symphony (1986-2001), of which he is now Director Emeritus, and Artistic Director of the Chamber Orchestra of Lausanne (1990-2000). For six years he was Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic and, in 2010, he completed a seven-year tenure as Music Director of the Teatro Real in Madrid and Principal Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid.

He has regularly conducted all main European and American orchestras, in addition to participating in the most prestigious international festivals. Among the many awards bestowed upon him, López Cobos has received the Cross of Merit, First Class, of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to German culture.
