underground in Chile have been given a rousing reception in Los Angeles at a media interview conducted by CNN.

The 33 miners from Chile and fi ve of the six underground rescuers are in Los Angeles this week for their fi rst groups visit

to a foreign country since being freed last month.

They were invited by CNN to attend the network’s

“An important component of the Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas is its effort to outreach the more than 50,000 legal permanent residents who qualify for citizenship in the state of Arkansas through its Reaching for the American Dream program (RAD),” said Margarita Solorzano, HWOA Executive Director.

Alongside HWOA will be immigration attorneys and law students who will be helping residents complete their citizenship application.

Solorzano said, “Those who have fulfilled their requirements and that are prepared to take an important step into becoming a U.S citizen can call the Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas to set up an appointment.”

The requirements to apply for citizenship are the

following: * If you have been a lawful

permanent resident for at least 4 years and 9 months, and you can speak, read and write English; or

* If you have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 2 years and 9 months, you have been married to a U.S citizen for 3 years, and you can speak, read and write English; or

* Either of the above and have a physical, developmental, or mental disability that affects your ability to learn English; or

* If you have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 20 years and are at least 50 years old (no need to speak English)

* Or if you have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 15 years and are at least 55 years old (no need to speak English)

The Reaching for the American Dream (RAD) program promotes U.S citizenship, civic participation, and is engaged in helping people

reach their American dream. Obtaining citizenship grants a variety of rights and protections such as, the right to vote, and protection from deportation, better educational opportunities, and unlimited ability to travel outside the country, financial benefi ts, and better employment opportunities. LITTLE ROCK, AR - Across the nation the approaching Thanksgiving holiday means increased traffi c on state roads and U.S. highways. In Arkansas state and local law enforcement agencies will be working extra-duty patrols throughout the holiday period to ensure holiday travelers remain safe. The initiative is part of the Click It or Ticket campaign and the objective to increase seat belt use by reminding motorists to buckle-up, every trip, day and night.

“The importance of buckling up every time you get into a vehicle cannot be

stressed often enough,” said Colonel Winford E. Phillips, Director of the Arkansas State Police. “Nighttime driving can be more dangerous because of reduced visibility and the possibility of impaired drivers being on the road.” Colonel Phillips said.

Law enforcement agencies across the state will conduct increased traffic safety enforcement activities as part of the week-long Thanksgiving mobilization, which begins November 22nd.

“Highly visible patrols promote compliance with traffi c laws and support offi cers’ efforts to prevent deaths and injuries,” said Phillips.

During the 2009 Thanksgiving holiday travel period in Arkansas, fi ve people lost their lives and 135 were seriously injured as the result of traffi c crashes.

“Sadly, a holiday, which for many is the happiest time of the year, can be one of the deadliest and most tragic,” said Colonel Phillips. “Use of safety restraints is one of the simplest and most important actions a driver or passenger can take and the life-saving benefi ts of seat belts and child safety restraints are indisputable; there’s no good excuse not to buckle up.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),

during 2008 on U.S. roadways, nearly 13,000 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants (drivers and passengers) became highway crash fatality victims. It’s estimated that nearly one third of these lives could have been saved if they had been properly belted.

Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes, according to NHTSA

NEW YORK, NY - Aligned with Diabetes Awareness Month in November, primary care providers and dental professionals across the country are educating their patients about the association between oral health and diabetes and on the importance of good oral health as a part of overall diabetes management.

For the nearly 24 million Americans living with diabetes, many may be surprised to learn

about an additional complication associated with the condition – serious gum disease. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), there is an increased prevalence of gum disease among those with diabetes, making proper oral health and hygiene a key factor to living well with diabetes.

Recent research shows that people living with diabetes are twice as likely to develop serious gum disease as people without diabetes. They are at an increased risk for gum disease

because they are generally more susceptible to bacterial infection, and have a decreased ability to fight bacteria that invade the gums. Emerging research also suggests that the association between serious gum disease and diabetes is a two-way relationship. Not only are people with diabetes more susceptible to developing gum disease, but serious gum disease also known as periodontitis can adversely affect blood glucose control and contribute to the progression of diabetes.

“Overall, there is low awareness among the diabetes community about the association between oral health and the short and long-term implications it may have on a successful, comprehensive diabetes management plan,” said Dr. Maria Emanuel Ryan, a professor of oral biology and pathology at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y. “One of the many complications of diabetes is a greater risk for periodontal disease.

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Combine butter, herbs, zests, mustard, salt and pepper in

work bowl of blender or food processor; cover. Process until well blended. 2. Remove neck and giblets from body and neck cavities of turkey. Reserve giblets

for stuffi ng if desired. Drain juices from turkey and dry turkey with paper towels. 3. Remove butter mixture from blender. Carefully work fi ngers under skin on breast

of turkey. Place half the butter mixture under breast area. Rub remaining butter mixture over breast and legs of turkey.

4. Place turkey, breast side up, on a fl at rack in a shallow baking pan. Roast turkey approximately 1-1/2 hours. Then, cover breast and top of drumsticks loosely with foil to prevent overbrowning.

5. Roast turkey another 1-1/2 hours, or until meat thermometer reaches 180°F when inserted into the deepest part of the thigh.

6. Let turkey stand 15 minutes before carving.

On Thursday, the entourage visited Hollywood landmarks such as the Walk of Fame stars on Hollywood Boulevard, including one belonging to Elvis Presley.

It was an appropriate pilgrimage because miner Edison Pena had led sing-along to Elvis music to lift the spirits of fellow miners during the dark ordeal. In fact, he had asked for the music to be sent down into the mine as rescuers drilled a bigger hole to pull the miners out of the ground.

The miners were joined at CNN by Hollywood stars Halle Berry, Renee Zellweger, Kiefer

Sutherland, Demi Moore and Kid Rock, with music provided by Bon Jovi.

The men, who have become popular fi gures since they were rescued last month, told CNN interviewer Anderson Cooper that their entire families had suffered during their time trapped in the mine.

They miners told Anderson Cooper there had been heated moments underground during their 69 days trapped.

The issue of eating caused tension after the miners had agreed to ration canned fish, sometimes as small as a bottle cap a day according to Juan Illanes, 52, an electrical mechanic at the mine.

Illanes said the miners had also felt panic in the collapsed

mine, especially when there was no contact with the outside world.

He said: “After a while, we sometimes felt panic, but it wasn’t a mass panic. There was always good will among us. We always had meetings, and we did it in a conversational manner, and that’s what kept us calm.”

He said one of the great hardships of being trapped in the hot; dark mine was having only helmet lamps for illumination.

The 69 days below ground was the longest mining captivity in history.

The miners, who were the subject of a media bidding frenzy after their rescue in mid-October, have been in Los Angeles to sign commercial deals.

of five other state attorneys general from the Conference of Western Attorneys General

(CWAG) went to Washington to ask Clinton to commit the State Department to continued

support of a CWAG initiative that provides training to Mexican judicial and law enforcement authorities engaged in fighting illegal drugs in that country.

“An essential way we as attorneys general can help to prevent international drug trafficking and the ills associated with it is by assisting other countries in their law enforcement efforts,” McDaniel said. “We’re grateful to be able to share with Secretary Clinton the success stories related to this initiative. We’re hopeful that through this visit we will be able to secure the funding to continue this program, which is helping to keep drug traffi ckers out of Arkansas.”

CWAG’s Alliance Partnership Program, funded by the State Department through USAID, has allowed attorneys general to provide technical assistance and legal training to Mexican authorities, who are often ill-equipped to deal with

the criminal cartels that operate in their country.

Those cartels’ operations reach to Arkansas, where the volume of imported methamphetamine has increased, even as the number of in-state methamphetamine labs has signifi cantly decreased as law enforcement agencies fi ght drugs on the homefront.

In 2008, four counties in the state were designated as High Intensity Drug Traffi cking Areas by the White House Offi ce of National Drug Control Policy. Those counties are Pulaski and Jefferson in central Arkansas and Washington and Benton in northwest Arkansas.

“We already have great cooperation among law enforcement officers on the federal, state and local level, and this cooperation has helped us achieve signifi cant reductions in drug distribution in Arkansas,” McDaniel said. “We can have the same type of cooperation with Mexican

officials and get the same results.”

McDaniel was joined by Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden, Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock, New Mexico Attorney General Gary King, Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch and Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna for the State Department visit.

McDaniel and the other attorneys general participated on scheduled meetings with offi cials from the White House, Department of Homeland Security and the Mexican Embassy.

The Alliance Partnership between CWAG and Mexican authorities involves 34 states and 28 Mexican states.

In fiscal 2010, more than 4,000 judicial and law enforcement authorities from Mexico participated in the training. More than 6,000 are projected to participate in fi scal 2011.

El Programa de la Alianza de CWAG, financiado por el Departamento de Estado a través de la Agencia de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo Internacional (USAID), ha permitido a los procuradores generales prestar asistencia técnica y capacitación jurídica a las autoridades mexicanas, que se encuentran a menudo mal equipadas para hacer frente a

los cárteles criminales que operan en su país.

En el año fiscal 2010, más de 4,000 autoridades judiciales y policiales de México participaron en el entrenamiento. Se prevé que más de 6,000 participen en el año fi scal 2011.

WASHINGTON, DC - The lucrative convention and conference business is the backbone of Arizona’s tourism industry and it has been signifi cantly hurt by the state’s enactment in April of harsh anti-immigration legislation. The industry’s losses will cost the state $253 million in economic output and more than $86 million in lost wages over the next two to three years, according to a report commissioned by the Center for American Progress.

The study, conducted by Arizona-based Elliott D. Pollack & Company, found that the losses from meetings that were cancelled following approval of the immigration control law S.B. 1070 total $141 million in direct spending by convention attendees. Further, the economic hit from cancelled meetings that would have occurred over the next two to three years—$253 million in economic output—affects 2,800 jobs that would have been supported by that activity.

Arizona’s anti-immigration policies have come at a time when the state’s economy can least afford it. Other high tourism states—Florida, Texas, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, to name a few—should heed this report’s warnings before jumping on Arizona’s derailed economic train.

“Citizens in other states must remain on high alert as politicians begin to talk about moving Arizona-like measures, especially in these fragile economic times,” said Angela M. Kelley, CAP’s Vice President for Immigration Policy and Advocacy. “Clearly, the numbers show the economic train wreck that happens under this anti-immigrant strategy waged by politicians who pander to hyperbolic fears of immigrants. Taxpayers are the ones who will have to dig deeper in their pockets to make up for local budget shortfalls created by empty convention spaces,” Kelley added.

Arizona’s enactment of S.B. 1070 during a sluggish economic period also damaged the state’s high-dollar commerce with Mexico, said Lea Marquez-Peterson, president and CEO of

the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, during a telephonic news media conference. “We’re hurting in Arizona. It’s been very tough,” she said of the impact on the business sector, adding, “The law has certainly impacted everybody, not just Hispanics or Latinos.”

Also speaking to reporters was the head of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Florida, where state lawmakers are considering Arizona copycat laws.

“Anyone who thinks an Arizona-type of law would not hurt Florida—a state that is home to theme parks, beaches, and sports complexes—is living in their own little Fantasyland; in their own little world,” said Julio Fuentes, president and CEO of the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

“This loss in economic activity (in Arizona) is also expected to be spread over multiple years,” emphasized Danny Court, a senior economic analyst at Elliott D. Pollack & Co.

The Pollack Company’s economic analysis, compiled by Kelley and Marshall Fitz, CAP’s Director of Immigration Policy, notes that cancelled convention bookings represent only one part of Arizona’s economic losses as a result of the draconian immigration legislation.

The study did not take into account unrelated leisure travel cancellations, losses from damaged international relations with Mexico, and decisions by members of the entertainment industry to stay out of Arizona. Nor did it quantify the consequences of workers and families that have reportedly left the state or the costs of litigation to defend a law that has been preliminarily ruled as unconstitutional.

As the study states, “even the narrow and targeted scope of this report shows that Arizona is facing severe economic and fi scal consequences. This report provides a clear window into the potentially catastrophic impacts of pursuing harsh, state-based immigration policies and should give other state legislatures pause before pursuing such measures.”

La aprobación de la S.B. 1070 de Arizona durante el letárgico período económico también perjudicó el lucrativo comercio con México, según Lea Márquez-Peterson, presidenta y CEO de la Cámara Hispana de Comercio de Tucson, durante

Como lo señala el estudio, “hasta el punto de vista más estricto y directo de este reporte demuestra que Arizona enfrenta consecuencias económicas y fi scales severas.
