Giravolts, per a flauta sola Aquesta peça fou escrita a petició del flautista Vicens Prats per a ser l’obra obligada en el Primer Concurs Nacional (de nivell professional) de la Asociación de Flautistas de España (AFE), celebrat a Barcelona durant el mes de març del 2012. Com tota obra per a instrument sol, s’intenta jugar amb tots els registres així com els efectes curiosos de la flauta (sorolls de claus, sons frullati, bending tones, harmònics, etc.) sempre cercant una unitat conceptual. Concebuda sense interrupció i de durada curta (7 minuts), l’obra s’inicia amb una lenta i evocativa Introducció seguint inicialment una lírica sèrie dodecatònica. Continua un moviment ràpid desenvolupant les cinc primers notes i desplegant virtuosisme en forma de “muntanya”. Segueix un Adagio jugant amb el misteri de soroll de claus i el registre greu de l’instrument. La tornada al moviment ràpid, bastant modificat, ens durà a una curta Coda d’efecte brillant. Giravolts (Espirales), para flauta sola Esta pieza fue compuesta a petición del flautista Vicens Prats para ser la obra obligada en el Primer Concurso Nacional (de nivel profesional) de la Asociación de Flautistas de España (AFE), celebrado en Barcelona durante el mes de marzo de 2012. Como ocurre con las obras para un solo instrumento, se intenta jugar con todos los registros así como los curiosos efectos de la flauta (el ruido de las llaves, sonidos frullati, bending tones, harmónicos, etc.) buscando siempre una unidad conceptual. Concebida sin interrupción y de corta duración (7 minutos), la obra empieza con una lenta y evocativa Introducción siguiendo en un principio una lírica serie dodecafónica. Sigue un movimiento rápido desarrollando las cinco primeras notas y desplegando virtuosismo en forma de “montaña”. A continuación, sigue un Adagio jugando con el misterio del ruido de las llaves y el registro grave del instrumento. La vuelta al movimiento rápido, bastante modificado, nos llevará a una corta Coda de efecto brillante. Giravolts (Swirling), for solo flute This work was written at the request of the flautist Vicens Prats to be the required piece in the First National Competition (professional level) of the Asociación de Flautistas de España (AFE) to be held in Barcelona in March 2012. Like any composition for instrument alone, the composer tries to play with all the registers and curious effects of the flute (key noises, frullati sounds, bending tones, harmonics, etc.) always looking for a conceptual unity. Conceived without interruption and of short duration (7 minutes), the piece begins with a slow and evocative Introduction initially following a lyrical twelve-tone sequence. A fast movement follows, developing the first five notes and displaying virtuosity in a "mountain" form. After this comes an Adagio, playing with the mystery of the noise of keys and the low register of the instrument. The return to the fast movement, now modified, will take us to a short Coda full of brilliance.

SALVADOR BROTONS  

Dr. Salvador Brotons was born in Barcelona into a family of musicians. He studied flute with his  father  and  continued  his  studies  at  the  Barcelona  Conservatory  of Music,  obtaining superior  titles  in  flute,  composition  and  orchestra  conducting.  His  professors  include, among  others,  Antoni  Ros‐Marbà  (conducting),  Xavier Montsalvatge  (composition)  and Manuel Oltra  (instrumentation).  In 1985 he was awarded with a  "Fullbright"  scholarship and moved  to  the  United  States where  he  obtained  his  Doctorate  in Music  from  the Florida State University.   From 1977 to 1985 he was principal flute  in the Orchestra of the Liceu  in Barcelona, and also a member of the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona. As a composer, he has written more 

than  120  works,  mainly  for  orchestra  and  chamber  ensembles.  He  has  received  fifteen  composition  awards including the Spanish National Orchestra Award (1977) the Golden Youth Award (1980), and the City of Barcelona Award  (1983 and 1986)  the Southeastern Composers League Award  (1986), The Madison University Flute Choir Composition Award (1987), and the Queen Sofia Prize (1991). Brotons has received many commissions.   Several of his pieces have been published and recorded  in CDs  in Europe and the USA under  labels such as EMI, Auvidis, Albany Records, Claves, RNE, etc.  Salvador Brotons was Assistant Conductor of  the Florida State University Symphony Orchestra  (1986‐1987), and Music Director and Conductor of the Oregon Sinfonietta (1990‐1993), the Mittleman Jewish Community Orchestra (1989‐91),  and  the  Portland  State  University  Symphony  Orchestra  (1987‐1997).  He  also  taught  counterpoint, orchestra conducting, music history and music literature at Portland State University.   He has been  the Conductor and Music Director of  the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra  (WA) since 1991. He has also been the Conductor and Music Director of the Vallès Symphony Orchestra (1997‐2002) in his native Barcelona, the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra in Palma de Mallorca (1998‐2001, 2009‐‐) and the Barcelona Symphonic Band  (2008‐‐). He  is on  the  faculty of  the Escola Superior de Música de Barcelona, where he  teaches orchestra conducting and composition. In 2002, he received the “Florida State University Alumni Award” for his professional achievements.  Brotons  has  been  invited  to  guest‐conduct many  orchestras  around  the world.  Currently  he  is  combining  an intense schedule as orchestra conductor with composition commissions.
