the FIDS. An alternative method of examining possible relationships be-tween dimensions of feminist identity and body image entails a typologicalanalysis (Rickard, 1989). Accordingly, on the basis of median splits of Pas-sive Acceptance (PA) and Synthesis/Active Commitment (SAC) scores, women were classified into these two, most disparate stage groups (i.e.,above median on one scale and below median on the other). This proce-dure permitt ed the distinctive classification of 61% of the sample. Betwee n-groups ANOVAs comp ared PA- ident i fi ed women (n = 35) andSAC-identified women (n = 40) on the six body-image measures. Resultsindicated no reliable differences in body image as a function of traditionalversus feminist identity (all ps > .20).

As predicted and shown in Table II, a stronger and more consistentpattern of results occurred with the Male-Female Relations Questionnaire, which assessed participants' role expectations regarding social relations be-tween men and women. Women's preference for and accommodation ofconventional, complementary roles of masculine dominan ce and femi-nine submission was associa ted (at p < .01) with several aspects of bodyimage. Women who maintained more traditional attitudes about male-fe-male relations had greater cognitive-behavioral investment in their appear-ance (MBSRQ Appearance Orientation; r = .26), had internalized societalstandards of beauty more fully (SATAQ-Internalization; r = .40), and en-dorsed more problematic assumptions about the pivotal importance and
