Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved

with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a

shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

[Mark 6: 34]

Context is important: two major setbacks: rejection

at Nazareth and the execution of John the Baptist. He

and the disciples really need a rest. But he is overcome

by the sight of people’s helplessness. Despite his efforts

to seek Sabbath rest, the need of the crowd outweighed

his personal weariness. The Greek word for “pity”

means the deepest of emotions, a visceral form of com-

passion. Deeply moved, how often do you drop every-

thing and attend to those in need?

Just as Jesus wrestles with exhaustion and the need

for personal rest, his heart is attuned to the more radical

needs of others, how lost they are and unable to under-

stand how to respond to the spiritual direction of their

lives. His mission is to reconcile and heal the inner dis-

tress that we feel, being stressed out by the polarization

of partisan politics, hateful criticism and divisiveness.

The mission of the Church is to help heal and foster tol-

erance and understanding so that all may find a home

and a resting place.

Questions for the week: What is it that moves me to

feel a visceral form of compassion for others? What,

then, do I do?

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

Cuando Jesús vio la muchedumbre, su corazón se movió

con compasión por ellos, porque eran como ovejas sin

pastor y él comenzó a enseñarles muchas cosas.

[Marcos 6: 34]

El contexto es importante: dos reveses mayores: el re-

chazo en Nazaret y la ejecución de Juan el Bautista. Él y

los discípulos realmente necesitaban un descanso. Pero él

siente lastima al ver la impotencia de la gente. A pesar de

sus esfuerzos para buscar el descanso del sábado, la ne-

cesidad de la muchedumbre sobrepasa su cansancio per-

sonal. La palabra griega “lástima” significa una emoción

profunda, una compasión que viene de adentro. Profunda-

mente movido, ¿qué tan a menudo dejas todo para aten-

der a esos que tienen necesidad?

Justo cuando Jesús pelea con el estar exhausto y la

necesidad del descanso personal, su corazón es atraído a

una necesidad más radical de los demás, que tan perdidos

están que no son capaces de entender cómo responder a

la dirección espiritual de sus vidas. Su misión es la de re-

conciliar y sanar la angustia interior que sentimos, estan-

do estresados por la polarización de los partidos políti-

cos, criticas odiosas y divisiones. La misión de la Iglesia

es la de ayudar a sanar y fomentar la tolerancia y el en-

tendimiento para que todos podamos encontrar un hogar

y un lugar donde descansar.

Preguntas de la semana: ¿Que me mueve a sentir una

compasión por los demás que viene de adentro? ¿Qué,

entonces, yo hago?

$3,222. Last week’s offertory of $2,410; Children’s Circle $32; left us without enough to pay the bills. Please do your part to fulfill

the “Precept of the Church” which says a good Catholic “contributes to the support of the Church,” as well as gives to the poor. Have you fulfilled the law of the Church if you only give to

Loaves and Fishes and not to the parish?

A National Reconfiguration of RCIA: RCIA will be undergoing a major conversion this year that will affect the whole parish. Instead of focusing on doctrine pri-marily, the curriculum for RCIA will become the life of our parish itself. RCIA candidates will be assigned a companion or sponsor, who will accompany them to various functions and groups within the parish. Together they will learn the art of theological reflection and assist one another as they grow in Christ together, one prepar-ing for deeper commitment to Christ in our Church. RCIA will only be meeting once a month as a total group this coming year. Sponsor companions are invit-ed along with our parish leaders to “Come & See Sat-

urday” on August 25, from 9:30 AM until 3 PM. SAVE

RCIA Information sessions are coming up next month: August 7 & 14, Tuesday nights at 7:15 PM for would-be

sponsors and would-be candidates to learn about the new method for RCIA.
