The Fourth Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced and kissed him. [Luke 15:20 b & c]

The subject of the Gospel is the mercy of the father. Compassion is the deepest expression of God’s person-al character. He is so lavish and generous that we could call it the story of the “Prodigal Father!” From the begin-ning of the parable the abundant mercy of the father cares for the wayward son. Respecting his freedom he gives him the inheritance he requests and lets him go. But he never stops watching for this son to return home. Before he can even get into town, the younger son is spotted by the father who runs out to give him a lavish welcome home and starts a huge celebration for him. When the elder son is resentful and sulking, won’t go into the party, the father comes out to him. God always makes the first move to reconcile, to care and to restore us. Both sons are lost and don’t know who their father is.

Because of the conflict and split in the early church community, Luke plays up the tension between the two groups: the tax collectors and sinners versus the scribes and Pharisees. The lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost sons are the three parables told in response to the self-righteous Pharisees. How might this parable apply in our own church community?

Question for the week: Which figure in the story do you most identify with at this point in your faith journey? The repentant, prodigal son? The older, resentful son? Or the forgiving father? Why?

Word for the week: “prodigal”: “wastefully extravagant,” spending money in a recklessly wasteful way, or lavish and extremely generous.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

Mientras él estaba todavía lejos, su padre lo vio y se llenó de compasión. Corrió a su hijo lo abrazó y lo be-só. [Lucas 15:20 b y c]

El sujeto del Evangelio es la misericordia del padre. La Compasión es la más profunda expresión del carác-ter personal de Dios. ¡Él es tan esplendido y generoso que podríamos llamarla la historia del “Padre Prodigo!” desde el comienzo de la parábola la misericordia abun-dante del padre cuida por el hijo rebelde. Respetando su libertad él le da la herencia que él pide y lo deja ir. Pero nunca deja de mirar para que este hijo regrese a su casa. Antes de que pueda llegar a su pueblo, el hijo más joven ya es visto por el padre quien corre a darle una espléndida bienvenida al hogar y comienza una suntuosa celebración para él. Cuando el hijo mayor se pone resentido y quejoso, y no quiere entrar en la fies-ta, el padre sale a donde él. Dios siempre hace el pri-mer movimiento para la reconciliación, para cuidarnos y restaurarnos. Los dos hijos están perdidos y no saben quién su papá es.

Por el conflicto y división en la comunidad primera de la iglesia, Lucas juega la tensión entre los dos gru-pos: el colector de impuestos y los pecadores contra los escribas y Fariseos. La Oveja Perdida, la Moneda Perdida, y el Hijo Perdido son tres parábolas dichas en respuesta a los Fariseos que creen en sí mismos. ¿Como esta parábola se aplica en nuestra propia co-munidad de iglesia?

Financial Good News and Caution: Your contributions were slowly healing the budget deficit for our offertory. One espe-cially large gift put us “in the black” and back on course. But because the weekly offertory has been less than $4,800 for the three weeks, we are sliding backwards. Here were Finan-cial Profile numbers as of 3/24/19: For this Fiscal Year our total Offertory revenue has been $180, 545. Our expenses have been $180, 285. So we only have a surplus of $260. Everyone makes a difference, in pulling together.

This Pilgrimage is more like a retreat, NOT a tour, but a way of traveling faith that is a journey of a life-time. Rules For Fasting during Lent: Remember the universal discipline of the Church for fasting is that we do not eat between meals and that we eat and drink less (all 3 meals not to exceed 2 small meals) and that we abstain from eating meat on Good Friday and the Fridays of Lent. The rule applies to those who are not ill between the ages of 12 to 59. Remember we are fasting to free ourselves up to serve others! Make it a prayer (otherwise it is just dieting!)

OPERATION RICE BOWL: Our traditional Lenten journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving means that as a com-munity of faith we share these common disciplines as we turn back to God as we accompany the poor at home and abroad in the global village. Having the Rice Bowl on our kitchen tables is the Catholic way to accompany the poor as real people whom we assist with our sacrifices of eating more simply during Lent and sharing savings. Each week a different country and new stories to ponder. We bring them back full on Palm Sunday and Holy Thursday.

OPERACION PLATO DE ARROZ: Nuestra tradicional jor-nada de Cuaresma de oración, ayuno y limosna significa que como comunidad de fe compartimos estas comunes disciplinas volteándonos a Dios y aprendiendo a acompa-ñar a los pobres en la casa y afuera en la viña global. Al tener el plato de arroz en nuestra mesa de la cocina es la manera católica de acompañar a los pobres como gente real a los que ayudamos con nuestros sacrificios de comer simplemente durante la Cuaresma y compartir nuestros ahorros. Cada semana un país diferente y una historia para pensar. Los traeremos llenos el Domingo de Palmas y el Jueves Santo.

I am so grateful for everyone who has supported me these past few months, the Loaves and Fishes ladies, the C.C.W. ladies and the Rosary group and everyone else who has been so wonderful. St. Joseph the Worker Fiesta! On May 1, Wednesday night, the English-speaking com-munity has been invited by the Hispanic com-munity to a Fiesta in honor of our parish pa-tron, Saint Joseph. Mass in Church will begin at 6:30 PM, preceded by La Danza – Mexican sacred dance starting at 6 PM. Then after the Mass the will be a grand dinner for all with the presentation of the First Annual St. Joseph the Worker Award for a special parishioner.

Thank you to CCW members who provided soups, sandwiches and desserts for the Simple Supper March 22nd. We also want to thank those members who helped with the set-up and clean-up. Our meal was plentiful and enjoyed by all. Please remember our Nursing Home project visit is to be held in April. We still need items for the 64 residents. If you can help us- items still needed are: tee shirts for both men and women, footie slippers nonstick for women, socks for men, combs, hair brushes, gum and candies are all appreciated. No soaps please. We are in the last month of prayers for our babies please continue your prayers for your spiritual baby. We are looking forward to our CCW Mother’s Day weekend where CCW members will have bake goods, flowers and baskets available for sale. If you need something very special for Mom we will have it at reasonable prices. Our next CCW meeting will be on Thursday, April 11th, at 6:30 PM in the Parish Hall. Our own Vice President Chef, Fran McElroy will take us to the kitchen and teach us how to make Butter and Ricotta Cheese. If we are all good, we will go home with samples of both. We will also be putting our bags together for the Nurs-ing Home too that evening-Many hands make light work. Please plan to join us for a busy, fun packed informative meeting. Bring your appetites because heavy hors d’ oeu-vres will be served!

The Youth Group is asking for candy donations for the annual Easter Egg Hunt. Please send individually wrapped candy (not chocolate because it melts) or monetary donations for the purchase of candy and prizes. Please bring your donations to the church office no later than Sunday, April 14th.
