Stations of the Cross

Could you walk a mile in Jesus' shoes? The Stations of the Cross brings us closer to Christ as we meditate on the great love he

showed for us in his most sorrowful passion. Tradition traces this loving tribute to our Lord

back to the Blessed Mother’s retracing her son’s last steps along what became known as the Via Dolorosa {the sor-

rowful way} on his way to his Crucifixion at Calvary . PLEASE COME PRAY THE STATIONS OF THE

CROSS EVERY FRIDAY DURING LENT AT 6:30 PM IN OUR CHURCH.

Third Sunday of Lent One Small Step

This story in John’s Gospel is one of the three

longest Gospel readings next to the Passion stories.

They are always read on the Sundays of Lent when

those preparing for baptism celebrate the scruti-

nies. They are meant not only for catechumens, but

also for all of us who are growing in faith. In to-

day’s Gospel, we see the Samaritan woman coming

to faith. The steps she takes are our steps, too.

Though she needs Jesus’ help, he approaches her

first. In asking her for a drink, he is really thirst-

ing for her faith. He invites us to make the jour-

ney of faith long before we start by putting us into

a faithful family, giving us a curious heart that

seeks the truth, sending us a friend or spouse

whose example draws us to the Lord.

The next step is acknowledging our need and

our sinfulness. The woman does this when she asks

for living water and faces her behavior in having

five husbands. Admitting our need for God, and

especially for God’s forgiveness, opens us to God’s

saving grace.

Another step is drawing closer to God in prayer.

That explains the odd question about worshiping

on a mountain. Jesus tells the woman, and us, that

the best worship is honest and from the Spirit.

That is more important than when or where we

pray. God hears the prayers of a small congrega-

tion in a rural chapel just as well those of a thou-

sand people in a large cathedral.

When we begin to share our faith with others,

we take the step of living our faith. We make a dif-

ference in someone else’s life and they begin to ex-

perience Jesus presence. Like the woman who told

her neighbors about Jesus, we find that the people

we have touched begin to find the Lord on their

own. Our catechumens are taking these steps now,

thanks to those who have

helped them experience Jesus’

invitation to faith. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

MEET OUR SEMINARIANS –PAUL SOLOMON and MARK BERNHARD

Paul Solomon first felt the call to the priesthood, when he was in seventh grade, serving Mass at SS Peter and Paul in Naperville. As he looked at the stained glass window of Christ the King, he felt a movement in his heart, and a voice speaking to him softly, “Come, follow me” and he was convinced that he was called to the priesthood. High school brought a big transition and sports be-came a priority. Paul was spending most of his time in football and baseball and living a typical high school life style. During his junior year, however, he realized that something was missing in his life and participating in Adoration and Reconciliation that was available afterwards allowed him to establish his prayer life. In senior year made a visit to the College of St Thomas and St. John Vianney Seminary. Pray-ing after Mass there, he heard the same voice he had heard seven years before, “Come follow me,.” and felt sure that he was in the right place. Paul is now in his 3rd year of Theology at Pontifical North American College in Rome, Paul feels that he has been blessed by many great experiences and op-portunities, and to be so close to Pope Emeritus Benedict as well as Pope Francis,” to walk the streets that great saints and martyrs once walked and to be able to pray and study with students from all over the world. “

When Mark Bernhard was a child growing up on his father’s farm in Elwood , Illinois, his parents kept faith a priority in the household. Praying the rosary every night was a family tradition and there were frequent visits to perpetual adoration. As his high school years arrived, he remained known as “the good kid” but sometimes was “going through the motions with his faith and spiritual life. While attending Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, when Mark’s Protestant friends chal-lenged him in his Catholic faith, he was forced pray more, read scripture and study more about his faith which led to an even stronger personal relationship with Christ. After receiving his degree in accounting, Mark joined FOCUS, The Fellow-ship of Catholic University Students, an organiza-tion that places recent college grads in different universities across the country. “Ministering to students at the University of Nebraska and work-ing with priests who loved their vocation and loved serving others “ helped him understand the priest-hood. This year, Mark is a first year Theology stu-dent at Mundelein Seminary

Stewardship Thought for the Week

When Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink of water, He opened the door for a life-changing relation-ship with Him. Scripture says her testimony drew many others to Him as well. We, too, must be ready to respond whenever and wherever the Lord speaks to us and be pre-pared for it to change our lives!

Monday CLOSED Tuesday 9:00-5:00 PM Wednesday 1:00-8:00 PM Thursday 12:00-5:00 PM Friday 9:00-1:00 PM Saturday 8:00 - 11:00 AM Sunday Closed

LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, suffi-cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church

year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addi-tion to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

∗la abstinencia de aquellos alimentos que para cada uno significan especial agrado, sea por la materia o por el modo de preparación;
