THE SYMBOLISM OF CANDLES

On February Second, we will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and purification of Mary. Connected to Simeon’s prophecy, on this day the Church has a special ritual involving a procession and the blessing of candles, the candles being a symbol of Christ whose birth illumined the world’s darkness. Since ancient times the Doctors of the Church have given special meaning to the candles used in Candlemas as a symbol of the Incarnate Christ: the beeswax is a symbol of His pure body, the wick His soul, and the flame His divinity. The blessing of candles at Candlemas is similar to the blessing of ashes and palms during the Lent and Easter season, respectively. The faithful will often bring candles to Mass on February 2nd to have them blessed for use at home throughout the year.

FIESTA DE LA CANDELARIA Y LEVANTAMIENTO DEL NIÑO El próximo jueves 2 de febrero tendremos la celebración de la Candelaria. Con el siguiente horario:

6:45 pm = Bendición de velas en la entrada principal de la Iglesia. . 7:00 pm = Misa Solemne en español 8:00 pm= Levantamiento del Niño en el Salón Parroquial.

Los que deseen pueden traer sus velas y la imagen del Niño Dios para el levanta-miento. Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, Madre de la Luz , es una advocación mariana de la Virgen María, Madre de Jesús. Etimológicamente, su nombre deriva de “candela” o “candelero” que se refiere a la luz: la Santa Luz que guía hacia el buen camino y la redención que aviva la fe en Dios. En su día se invoca a Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria como Madre de la Luz para tener su bendición de Luz todo el año, especialmente para las embarazadas y niños que van a nacer, recordando el día que la Santísima Virgen María y San José, presentaron a su hijo Jesús en el Templo de Jerusalén y el anciano Simeón al verlo al niño, exclamó: -“LUZ para iluminar a las Naciones”-. Por eso, se bendicen las VELAS de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, porque Cristo es LUZ, la LUZ de Dios que nunca falla.

BIBLE STUDY

Did you ever wish you could get more out of the Mass and grow closer to our Lord Jesus? Corpus Christi Parish will study A Biblical Walk Through the Mass beginning Monday February 11 at 10:00a.m. in room #2 in the Parish Center and continuing every week for 6 weeks. In this video-based study, A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, Dr. Edward Sri explores the roots of the words and gestures we experience at Mass and explains their profound significance. You will come to know and understand the Mass like never before, leading you to a richer, more fruitful worship experience. An initial meeting will be on Monday Feb.12. Fundraiser for Confirmation Retreat Corpus Christi Confirmation Class are in need of funds to cover the cost of the retreat. The retreat is to held on Feb-ruary 9th—11th at the Diocese Youth Retreat Center in Lafayette. The youth will hold fundraisers after Masses from January through February. Be on the lookout for these and partici-pate, thank you.
