What is a data centre?

• A facility composed of networked computers and storage that businesses use to organise, process, store or distribute large amounts of data.

• All buildings, facilities and rooms which contain enterprise servers, server communication equipment, cooling and power equipment, and provide some form of data service.

Page 4: CoC DC presentation

4

• Data centre numbers are growing

• EU DC consume 60 TWh/year (2-3% of total)

• Up to 30% energy efficiency savings are possible at low costs.

5

EU CoC DC Energy Efficiency

• Voluntary initiative in response to growing energy consumption in data centres and the need to reduce the associated impacts.

• Improve understanding of energy demands and recommend cost-effective energy efficient best practices that do not hinder the performance of the system.

• Reference/Benchmarking for other businesses through a common set of principles.

Results – Best practices

Supplement to the CoC, provides info and support to DC operators regarding energy efficiency opportunities.

152 Best Practices in total, 81 minimum expected(2016)

Most of the top implemented practices require low capital expenditure (low hanging fruit)

Recent participants implement more BPs

16

Conclusions

PUE is decreasing since the beginning of the programme due to technological advances.

Average annual electricity consumption has decreased.

Wider ToC and RH% set point ranges.

Type of DC with the lowest PUE:• very small or very large• Built between 2005-2010• 5-10 MW• Use of Indirect Water free cooling system• Northern/Central Europe
