Tres ediciones son multitud

Son innumerables las cosas que hemos aprendido durante los preparativosde estas tres ediciones de Tenerife Shorts. Alguna malas, otras mejores,todas enriquecedoras de alguna forma. Las malas ya las imaginábamos,pero nunca pensamos que pudiesen ser tan arbitrarias en algunos aspectos, con las familias (en el sentido Coppoliano de la palabra)moviendo hilos. También comprobamos que por ahora el interés institucionalque despierta es residual. Y aunque no esté bien escribirlo, llegar a la tercera edición en las condiciones que hemos soportado durante esta etapaprimeriza del festival es un relativo, pequeño, pero gratificante éxito.

Traer el mejor cine corto internacional a la isla tenía una doble dificultad, unaespecie de doble discriminación: era traer cine de autor, que prácticamenteresiste sin una vía comercial, como hacen otros festivales de forma exitosapero era limitarnos también a una duración poco apreciada. ¿O no es así?La duración se está revelando como un activo para cualquier festival internacional de cortometrajes desde el cambio masivo hacia la Era Digital.El cortometraje podría estar dejando de ser un cine marginal, iniciático,modesto y oculto, para no ser tratado más como al hermano feo dellargometraje. En gran parte esto se debe a su difusión en nuevos mediosdigitales y a la popularización de festivales que elaboran una selección congrandes obras. La libertad de manejar presupuestos pequeños para producciones más cortas hacen que veamos propuestas arriesgadas dondeel director no tiene las presiones que sí soportan muchos autores delargometrajes. Los talentos no se ven encorsetados gracias al cine digital ala hora de expresar una inquietud desde el audiovisual. Y el número deobras fílmicas se multiplica casi al mismo ritmo que el número de festivales,aunque podemos asegurar que ni unas ni otros crecen cualitativamente yaque el talento y su reconocimiento son limitados.

Este tercer año intentamos traer no sólo el mejor cortometraje internacionalsino también algunas de las mejores obras canarias, y comenzamos unacompetición que nos traerá a cineastas locales de gran talento. Tambiénhemos preparado una proyección de cortos para toda la familia que esperamos sea una forma de acercar al festival a otros públicos.

Sólo queda disfrutar de la programación en un marco ideal, el TeatroGuimerá, y que la jornada electoral ayude a que el público acuda al cierredel festival en un año prolijo en pequeñas grandes películas.

Three is a crowd

The things we learnt during the preparations of these three editions of Tenerife Shorts are invaluable. Some bad, others better, but all enriching insome way. We could imagine the bad ones, but we never thought that theycan be so arbitrary in some aspects, with the families (in the Coppolian senseof the word) pulling strings. Also, it has been proven that the institucional interest that the festival awaked until now is residual. And even if it isn’t goodto write it, reaching the third edition in the conditions we endured during thisfirst stages, is a debatable, little, yet gratifying success.

To bring the best international short films in the island had double difficulties,some kind of double discrimination: the first one was to bring auteur cinema,which practically resists without a commercial route, like other festivals successfully do, but the challenge was to limit us to a length little appreciated. Or isn’t that so? The length is revealing as an asset to any shortfilm festival since the massive change towards the Digital Era. The short filmcould cease to be a marginal cinema, a novice, modest and a hidden one, toabandon being treated more like the uglier brother of feature films. Mostly,this could happen due to the distribution in new digital mediums and to thepopularity of festivals that elaborate a selection with great works. The libertyto manage little budgets for shorter productions results in daring proposals inwhich the director doesn’t have to handle the pressure that manny feature auteurs have to face. The talents aren’t corseted thanks to the digital cinemathat enables to express a inquisitiveness from the audio-visual. And the number of filmic works multiplies almost at the same speed as the number offestivals, although we can assure that neither one nor the other grow in termsof quality because the talent and its recognition are limited.

This third edition we try not only to bring the best international works, but aswell to begin a new competition with some of the best Canarian short films,shot by talented local filmmakers. We have also prepared a screening ofshort films for the entire family, which we hope to be a form to bring togetherother audiences to the festival.

The last thing to do is to enjoy the programming in an ideal venue, theGuimerá Theatre, and to hope that the electoral day will help us gather theaudience at the closing gala in a year full of little great films.

Jurado / JuryLuis Miranda(Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1970)

trabaja como Director del Festival Internacional de Cine de Las Palmas de GranCanaria desde 2015, donde ha sido programador desde 2003 y coordinadordesde 2011. Es Licenciado en Historia delArte, Especialista en Historia y Estética delCine por la Universidad de Valladolid, y tieneel Título de Estudios Avanzados en Historiadel Cine por la Universidad Autónoma deMadrid. Autor del libro Takeshi Kitano (2006,Serie Cineastas de Ediciones Cátedra), y coordinador editorial de los libros China siglo

Luis Miranda (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1970)

has worked as the Director of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International CinemaFestival since 2015, where he has been a producer since 2003 and organiser since2011. He graduated in Art History, specialising in Cinema History and Aesthetics atthe University of Valladolid, and he holds a degree in Advanced Studies in CinemaHistory from the Autonomous University of Madrid. Author of the book Takeshi Kitano(2006, Filmmaker Series of Ediciones Cátedra), and editorial coordinator of the booksChina siglo XXI: desafíos y dilemas de un nuevo cine independiente, 1992-2007(China 21st Century: Challenges and Dilemmas for a New Independent Cinema,1992-2007) (2007, Granada Festival – Cines del Sur) and Las edades de Apu. Estudios sobre la Trilogía de Satyajit Ray (The Ages of Apu. Studies on the SatyajitRay Trilogy) (2013, ‘Cuadernos de Cine – La filmoteca de Alejandría’, Film Room atthe ULPGC), he has published about twenty articles in various books and publicationsspecialising in History of Film. He has given specialised post-graduate courses inCharles III University of Madrid and in the University of Zaragoza, and electivecourses in the Film Rooms in A Coruña and the ULPGC, sitting on the governingcouncil of the latter. He is the editorial consultant of the international film theory andhistory magazine, LFU – La FuriaUmana.

XXI: desafíos y dilemas de un nuevo cine independiente, 1992-2007 (2007, Festivalde Granada – Cines del Sur) y Las edades de Apu. Estudios sobre la Trilogía deSatyajit Ray (2013, Cuadernos de Cine La filmoteca de Alejandría, Aula de Cine de laULPGC), ha publicado una veintena de artículos en diversos libros y publicacionesespecializadas en Historia del Cine. Ha impartido cursos monográficos de post-grado en la Universidad Carlos III y en la Universidad de Zaragoza, y cursos delibre configuración en las Aulas de Cine de La Coruña y de la ULPGC, formandoparte del consejo rector de esta última. Es consultor editorial de la revista internacional de teoría e historia del cine LFU – La Furia Umana.

Jurado / JuryMiguel G. Morales (Tenerife, 1978)

Estudia Cine en Madrid, en la Escuela TAI yen la EICTV de San Antonio de los Baños,La Habana, Cuba. Trabaja en televisión almismo tiempo que empieza a realizar susprimeras películas hasta que se dedica porcompleto a dirigir de forma independiente.Sus trabajos van desde la generación de laSegunda República Española vinculada ala revista Gaceta de Arte y al Surrealismohasta los artistas César Manrique, JoséSaramago o Ignacio Aldecoa.

Trabajos que se han rodado en diferentes países y se han mostrado en festivales internacionales y centros de arte nacionales. Aparte del género documental, tambiénha trabajado la ficción y la video creación.

Miguel G. Morales (Tenerife, 1978)

He studied cinema in Madrid, in the TAI School and the EICTV of San Antonio de losBaños, La Habana, Cuba. He works in television and at the same time he begins tomake his first films, until he is completely dedicated to lead independently. His worksrange from the creation of the Second Spanish Republic linked to the magazine Gaceta de Arte and the Surrealism to the artist César Manrique, and the writers JoséSaramago and Ignacio Aldecoa. His works have been shot in different countries andhave been shown in international festivals and national art centers. Apart from thedocumentary genre, he has also worked with fiction and video creation.

Jurado / JuryKeba Keybis Danso(Dakar, Senegal, 1984)

Realizador y mediador cultural, diplomado encinematografía por la escuela Media Centerde Dakar, Senegal, es presidente y sociofundador de AJSS y APCS (Asociación parala Promoción de Cine Senegalés) y encargado de comunicación de varias asociaciones (CINE–BANLIEUE; CAEM-Consultores; Asociados para la Educaciónde los Medios de Comunicación y la Asociación Senegalesa de Críticos de Cine).Implicado en la vida cultural de la capital senegalesa, forma parte de la organización de festivales como el ‘Festival depelículas de barrios de Dakar’; ‘Banlieue Film Festival’; ‘Festival de películasFrancófonas de Dakar’; así como el ‘Festival AfriCanaria’, en la isla de La Palma: y elFestival de Cine Africano de Córdoba (FCAT), en el que viene colaborando desde2013. Ha formado parte de proyectos de cine local en la isla de La Palma donde reside actualmente. También colabora como activista en pro de los Derechos Humanos con la delegación de Amnistía Internacional de La Palma. Algunas de susrealizaciones audiovisuales son: ‘La vida en el campo’, ‘El regreso de un inmigrante’ y‘Los maridos fantasmas’. Asimismo, colabora en proyectos de creación sonora, particularmente con Anna Raimondo (Bélgica - Francia).

Keba Keybis Danso(Dakar, Senegal, 1984)

Filmmaker and cultural mediator, diploma in Film School Media Center in Dakar, Senegal, is president and founding partner of AJSS and APCS (Association for the Promotion of Senegalese cinema) and communication manager of several associations(CINE-BANLIEUE; CMEA Consultants, Partners in Education Media and the Senegalese Association of Film Reviewer). Involved in the cultural life of the Senegalese capital, he is part of the organization of festivals such as the 'Festival offilms neighbourhoods of Dakar'; 'Banlieue Film Festival'; 'Dakar Festival of Francophone Films’; and the 'Festival AfriCanaria', on the island of La Palma, and theAfrican Film Festival of Cordoba (FCAT), which he has been working in since 2013. He has been part of local film projects on the island of La Palma where he currently resides. Also he works as activist for Human Rights with Amnesty International of LaPalma. Some of his audiovisual works are: ‘Life in the field', 'The return of an immigrant'and 'Ghosts husbands'. Besides, he works in sound creation projects, particularly withAnna Raimondo (Belgium - France).
