Re: American Chemical Society Project SEED High School Program
Dear Teacher:
The American Chemical Society has an educational program, Project SEED, whose purpose is to encourageeconomically disadvantaged high school students to pursue career opportunities in the chemistry related sciences. This isthe fifth year we have run the program at the University of Puerto Rico-Ro Piedras and this summer we have spaces forfourteen students; twelve for SEED I and two for SEED II. I am writing to you for your help in identifying students forthe SEED I at your school that might benefit from this program.
The program consists of an 8-week science project, during the summer, in research laboratories at the University ofPuerto Rico-Ro Piedras. These projects will give the students the opportunity to experience science first hand.Enthusiastic scientists will individually mentor the students, and each student will receive a stipend of $2,500. Thestudents who will benefit from this experience are Juniorsabout to enter their Senior year. The students must havetaken a one-year introductory high school chemistry course and can not graduate this year. This is anintellectually challenging experience and the students who have the capability for Advanced Placement classes will bebest suited to it. Less able students could easily become overwhelmed. The students should be dedicated and really wantto have this experience.
The economic requirements of the SEED program are that the student should come from a family whose income isbelow $34,340, though exceptions may be made up to $48,260 for students from minority backgrounds that areunderrepresented in science.
One of the goals of the program is to educate the students and their parents/guardians about the importance of highereducation. A committee will review the evaluations to select some finalists. The finalists and their parents/guardians willbe invited to the University of Puerto Rico-Ro Piedras campus for an interview and meet the scientific mentors. Our goalis that all applicants during the interview obtained a clear overview of its commitment to the program.
Please find attached a Student Application Form and ACS Project SEED Student Information sheet. If you couldcoordinate the physical return of the students application to the Department of Chemistry, UPR-Ro Piedras, or mail it toat the address below that would be very helpful. We will not evaluate incomplete applications or those sendelectronically.
We look forward to receiving your students' applications by Monday March 21st, 2016and meeting the students you
have nominated and generously written letters of recommendation for. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you haveany questions.
Sincerely,
