The fruit is long, curved and soft, with a pointed tip, 10 to 20 cm long. The surface is irregular with longitudinal striations and soft, curved spines, and the color varies from light to dark green. It is usually eaten as vegetable in salads. In case of disease or/and obesity it can be eaten as juice extract during a fast. It is also effective as dehydrated powder. Se suele utilizar mucho en Ecuador, Per, Bolivia, Colombia y muchas zonas de Amrica del Sur y Amrica Central.Al ser una planta trepadora, utiliza unos zarcillos para poder crecer y trepar: son hojas modificadas con una forma en espiral que le permite agarrarse a los distintos soportes. En cada nudo de la caigua se encuentra el zarcillo, una hoja, la inflorescencia de las flores macho y la flor hembra (la ms pequea). Cuando el polen de la flor macho, llega a la de la hembra y se fecunda aparecen los frutos: las caiguas.El sabor de la caigua es un poco inspido, muy parecido al del pepino. Por ello, se puede utilizar mucho para hacer gazpachos. Para utilizarlo en las comida hay que coger una caigua madura y quitar las semillas que tiene dentro del fruto. A continuacin habr que trocearlo y sin necesidad de cocinar se puede utilizar para hacer un gazpacho. Tambin se puede utilizar para hacer diferentes recetas si la cocinamos.Entre sus propiedades, encontramos que es un desengrasante natural ya que es rica en fibra. Es una hortaliza perfecta para ayudarnos en la dieta y eliminar las grasas que se acumulan en el organismo. Esta hortaliza es rica en fibraPara cultivar la caigua, no encontraremos muchos problemas.
