For many custom integrators, the green home building process generally hasbeen a frustrating one. For some reason the value of energy-saving systems likelighting control, HVAC control, irrigation control and home automation has beenunder-rewarded in the point scales used to determine green homes. Indeed, itseems like the planting of a single cactus in the backyard of a green home ismore valued than these vital electronic systems that can affect the daily lives of ahome’s inhabitants.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesFotodetector a escala nanométrica demuestra mejora en lacapacidad de los circuitos fotónicosPublicada en DeviceSpace, 04/10/2015.

Photonic circuits, which use light to transmit signals, are markedly faster than electronic circuits. Unfortunately, they're also bigger. It's difficult to localize visible light below its diffraction limit, about 200-300 nanometers, and ascomponents in electronic semiconductors have shrunk to the nanometer scale, the photonic circuit size limitation hasgiven electronic circuits a significant advantage, despite the speed discrepancy. Now researchers at the University ofRochester have demonstrated a key achievement in shrinking photonic devices below the diffraction limit — anecessary step on the road to making photonic circuits competitive with today's technology. The scientists developeda nanoscale photodetector that uses the common material molybdenum disulfide to detect optical plasmons —travelling oscillations of electrons below the diffraction limit — and successfully demonstrated that light can drive acurrent using a silver nanowire.

Was the company revenue performances only bad for the first half of 2015? Or has it been the case for threeconsecutive quarters? Only LED manufacturers know how they fared this year. “The (Chinese) LED industry is indeep waters, and only a few manufacturers will survive in the next few years,” said several industry insiders duringrecent interviews with LEDinside’s editorial team in China. With the LED industry entering a mature phase, painfulsituations have become unavoidable. Price wars are escalating, product quality issues are increasing instead ofdiminishing, and growing numbers of mergers and acquisitions are intensifying industry restructure. In Septemberthese “negative energy” incidents are expected to reach the explosive limit. To escape the brewing crisis in the LEDindustry, manufacturers are searching for a chance of survival.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesPUBLICACIONES CIENTÍFICASExperimental evaluation of hybrid solar still using waste heatPublicada en Science Direct, 26/10/2015.

Solar stills are cost-competitive compared to other renewable desalination technologies especially for very small-scale desalination devices. The commercialization of advanced solar stills, which can largely increase productivity, may require simpler design to increase their reliability and maintainability. In this paper, we have designed a multiple-effect diffusion (MED) hybrid solar still with simpler seawater feeding device and dual heat sources of solar thermalenergy and waste heat. Performance tests with waste heat were performed with three operational parameters: theamount of heat inputted into the hybrid still, the seawater flow rate to the wick, and the seawater level in the basin.Experimental results show that the productivity of the hybrid still increases linearly with increasing heat input, recording 18.02 kg/m2 at 22.37 MJ/d. The maximum productivity of distillate was obtained at the lowest seawaterlevel even in the case of the experiment with waste heat source. The maximum performance of the MED solar still isachieved at the operation condition obtaining maximum productivity at the second effect plate, indicating that theMED section of the hybrid solar still plays a more important role than the basin section in the entire performance ofthe hybrid still.

Reliable context-aware multi-attribute continuous authenticationframework for secure energy utilization management in smarthomesPublicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 26/10/2015.

In smart homes, users remotely manage resource utilization tasks and context-aware services using portable devicesand mobile communication technologies. Reliability of automated energy consumption management relies uponcontext-aware continuous authentications of users in executing time-critical tasks. In particular, the contexts ofmobility of users and the critical nature of the task are important. Continuous authentication is a robust technique toensure validity of the authenticity of users over time. Existing continuous authentication techniques do not use thecontextual information and dynamic user behavioral characteristics for authentications. We propose a novel context-aware multi-attribute continuous authentication model for secure energy utilization management in smart homes. Weuse location and the critical nature of the tasks as the contextual information as supporting information for selectingthe authentication attributes. We propose novel location and task profiles as context specification metrics and a novelrelative-importance based attribute selection technique based on N-model.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesEconomical low–light photovoltaics by using the Pt–freedye–sensitized solar cell with graphene dot/PEDOT:PSS counterelectrodesPublicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 19/10/2015.

G r a p h e n e d o t s ( G D s ) a r e u s e d f o r e n h a n c i n g t h e p e r f o r m a n c e o f t h epoly(3,4–ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)–based counter electrodes in Pt–freedye–sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). As compared to PEDOT:PSS CEs, GD–PEDOT:PSS films possess a roughsurface morphology, high conductivity and electrocatalytic activity, and low charge-transfer resistance toward I–/I3–redox reaction, pushing cell efficiency to 7.36%, which is 43% higher than that of the cell with PEDOT:PSS CEs(5.14%). Without much impact on efficiency, the DSSCs with GD–PEDOT:PSS CEs work well under low–lightconditions (light intensity13.5 mW cm2 and angle of incidence60°), such as indoor and low–level outdoor lighting andof the sun while the other traditional cells would fail to work. The concurrent advantage in low cost in Pt–freematerials, simple fabrication processes, comparable efficiency with Pt CEs, and high performance under low–lightconditions makes the DSSC with GD–PEDOT:PSS CEs suitable to harvest light for a diverse range of indoor andlow–level outdoor lighting locations.

Comparison of support policies for residential photovoltaic systemsin the major EU markets through investment profitabilityPublicada en Science Direct_Publicaciones Fotovoltaica, 19/10/2015.

In this paper a comprehensive evaluation of the support policy for photovoltaic installations in the residential sector ofthe major European markets (Flanders (Belgium), Germany, Italy, Spain and France) is carried out. To this end, theeconomic viability of a household investment in a photovoltaic installation is studied, employing a model based on thediscounted cash flows of the installation over its lifetime. The results indicate that Italy's support system has been themost profitable out of the countries studied since 2010. In general, under current support policies, residentialinstallations are still profitable in most cases, despite decreasing support levels, except for Spain. Furthermore, thepaper demonstrates that self-consumption can significantly increase profits, especially in Spain and Germany.

Profitability in absence of subsidies: A techno-economic analysis ofrooftop photovoltaic self-consumption in residential andcommercial buildingsPublicada en Science Direct_Publicaciones Fotovoltaica, 19/10/2015.

In the face of fading regulatory support for the deployment of photovoltaics (PV), self-consumption models forphotovoltaics on buildings present an option to decouple economic performance from policy support such as feed-intariffs. Through a techno-economic analysis we analyze the potential of PV self-consumption for four different buildingtypes (residential and commercial, each large and small) in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. We find that with self-consumption rooftop PV can be attractive for many buildings in central Europe already today, even in the absence ofregulatory support. Main profitability drivers include electricity prices and the achievable self-consumption share of abuilding (driven, in turn, by the building-specific ratio of PV power production and electricity demand, and the timelyoverlap of production and the consumption curve).

The climatological relationships between wind and solar energysupply in BritainPublicada en Science Direct_Publicaciones Fotovoltaica, 19/10/2015.

We use reanalysis data to investigate the daily co-variability of wind and solar irradiance in Britain, and itsimplications for renewable energy supply balancing. The joint distribution of daily-mean wind speeds and irradiancesshows that irradiance has a much stronger seasonal cycle than wind, due to the rotational tilt of the Earth. Irradianceis weakly anticorrelated with wind speed throughout the year (0.40.2): there is a weak tendency for windy days to becloudier. This is particularly true in Atlantic-facing regions (western Scotland, south-west England). The east coast ofBritain has the weakest anticorrelation, particularly in winter, primarily associated with a relative increase in thefrequency of clear-but-windy days. We also consider the variability in total power output from onshore wind turbinesand solar photovoltaic panels. In all months, daily variability in total power is always reduced by incorporating solarcapacity

Consumers’ privacy concerns and implications for a privacypreserving Smart Grid architecture—Results of an Austrian studyPublicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 12/10/2015.

Smart Grid applications, such as energy feedback systems, load shifting for smart homes, and smart charging ofelectric vehicles provide new possibilities to support the incorporation of renewables. Aside from technical feasibility, consumer requirements and concerns, particularly in terms of the protection of personal privacy, have not been thefocus of Smart Grid developments. We therefore investigated consumers’ Smart Grid related privacy concerns inprivate and business contexts and focused on the research questions: (1) who is perceived as a trustworthy authorityfor energy data storage? (2) What can pose as a privacy threat for consumers? (3) How should energy data behandled by an ICT infrastructure? We conducted a comprehensive online survey (N = 240) in Austria to gain anoverview into the concerns and deepened our understanding by conducting two focus groups (N = 15). Our resultsindicate the importance of decentralized data storage, access control, as well as information transparency and theincorporation of privacy enhancing functionalities. Consumer-driven requirements and technical requirements led to asuggestion for a privacy preserving ICT infrastructure, following the paradigm of a service-oriented architecture. Thisarchitecture can serve as a reference for a future user-centered Smart Grid ICT architecture design.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesIonic liquid-induced synthesis of a graphene intercalated ferrocenenanocatalyst and its environmental applicationPublicada en ScienceDirect _TELECO, 05/10/2015.

Redox active processes between the -conjugated system of ferrocene and graphitic surfaces of oxidized or reducedgraphene oxide represent a growing area of interest for the development of tunable nanocatalytic systems. In thiswork, anchoring of intercalated cationic and anionic IL components that engage in both covalent and non-covalentinteractions and the subsequent reorganization of IL–rGO bonds after ionothermal decomposition and waterhydrolysis of reactive complexes suggests that IL functionalized rGO leads to a regional rearrangement of thecarbon–carbon atomic network. The results of this study emphasize the combined solvent and templating propertiesof [BMIM][FeCl4] at the rGO–IL interface that synthetically directs the self-assembly of a non-hexagonalorganometallic structural framework composed of nano-regimes of Fe(II) cyclopentadienyl ring complexes in areduced graphene oxide matrix. The results show that the atomic rearrangement is consistent with the structural andbehavioral characteristics of ferrocene. The capability of rGO-IL and its potential use as an environmentalnanocatalyst was demonstrated by its ability to reversibly switch redox states between Fe(II) and Fe(III)corresponding to the ferrocene–ferrocenium redox pair permitting electron transfer from Fe to toxic Cr(VI) and itssubsequent reduction to a non-toxic organometallic.

Nonlinear modeling and control of a photovoltaic fed improvedhybrid DSTATCOM for power quality improvementPublicada en Science Direct_Publicaciones Fotovoltaica, 05/10/2015.

This paper proposes a low rating photovoltaic fed improved hybrid distributed static compensator (DSTATCOM) forthe compensation of harmonics and reactive power. The proposed system satisfies the load active power demandwith reduced power rating of the photovoltaic source for same load rating as compared to the standard L or LCLfilters. The system is modeled and controlled by considering the non-linearity of the system. A dc voltage droopregulator is used to control the power flow from solar system and to maintain dc link voltage. To make the systemrobust, switching pulses for inverter is generated using sliding mode controller. The efficacy of proposed model withsliding mode controller over linearly controlled system is validated through simulation results. The proposed systemprototype is developed and operated in real time to show the effectiveness of the system.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesIntegración de energía eólica, solar y biomasa en un año para laproducción constante de CH4, CO2 y aguaPublicada en Science Direct_Publicaciones Fotovoltaica, 01/10/2015.

In this paper we optimize the combination of biomass, wind and solar energy for the constant production of syntheticmethane. Biomass is used for the production of power and/or hydrogen. Photovoltaic solar and wind energy are usedto obtain power. Water is electrolyzed generating oxygen and hydrogen, which is used to synthesize methane withCO2. The model is formulated as an MINLP. The optimization suggests the production of power using solar energycomplemented with biomass. Biomass is processed using indirect gasification and steam reforming. The hydrogen isproduced from water electrolysis. The investment and production costs are 175 M€ and 0.38 €/Nm3 respectively. Asensitivity analysis shows that biomass is preferred for prices and investment below 50 €/t and 1500 €/kW. Solarenergy is used for high cost of biomass if solar incidence is above 1200 kWh/m2 yr. Wind use is restricted to lowsolar incidence and wind velocities above 9 m/s.
