El Puente fue fundado hace 16 años por Conchita Walker, quien anterior-mente había sido parte del Cuerpo de Paz (Peace Corps). Su espíritu de ge-nerosidad y servicio volun-tario es lo que hizo posible la creación de El Puente. Este programa continúa dando servicio a jóvenes para que tengan estudios y rompan el ciclo de po-breza de sus familias y comunidades. Su sustenta-bilidad depende grande-m e n t e d e o t r o s quienes, como Conchita, tienen un fuerte espíritu de servicio voluntario. Nunca ha sido esto más aparente que ahora cuan-do hemos sido tan bende-cidos y rodeados de volun-tarios dispuestos que nos ayudan de tantas mane-ras. Esta edición resalta el impacto que tiene en El Puente el servicio volunta-rio, tocando el tema del donativo patrocinado por el Cuerpo de Paz para comprar computadoras nuevas, luego tratando con la formación de un grupo nuevo de apoyo, Amigos de El Puente, y terminando con los bene-ficiarios de El Puente quienes dan servicio de

voluntarios en un progra-ma de verano que ellos desarrollan para otros de pocos recursos.

Ofrecemos nuestro agra-decimiento a todos los voluntarios desinteresa-dos quienes ayudan a El Puente de maneras tan diversas. Sin ustedes, mu-cho de lo que podemos lograr sería imposible. Muchas gracias, y que Dios los bendiga por todo lo que contribuyen. *********************El Puente was founded 16 years ago by Conchita Walker, who had previ-ously been with the Peace Corps. Her spirit of volun-teerism and generosity is what enabled the forma-tion of El Puente. This pro-gram continues to serve young men and women to obtain an education and break the cycle of poverty in their families and com-munities. Its sustainability depends greatly on others who, like Conchita, have a strong spirit for volunteer-ing. No time is that more apparent than now - when we have been so deeply blessed and surrounded by willing volunteers that help us in so many ways. This issue highlights how

volunteering impacts El Puente - from the Peace Corps-sponsored donation for upgrading computers to the formation of a new support group, Amigos de El Puente, and coming full circle to the El Puente beneficiaries who volun-teer in a summer pro-gram, that they develop, for others with few re-sources.

We extend our gratitude to all of the selfless volun-teers who help El Puente in so many ways. Without you, much of what we are able to accomplish would be impossible. Thank you and God bless you for all that you do.

The Querétaro State Governor, José Cal-zada Rovirosa, his wife, Sandra Albarrán de Calzada, and Tonatiuh Salinas Muñoz, Secretary of Sustainable Development, were among the repre-sentatives from various organizations gathered at the Teatro de la República for the ceremony. Mary Elizabeth Char-lot-Cruz, President of the Board of Direc-tors of El Puente, Leonor Noriega, Pro-gram Director, and JoEllen Campos from the Amigos de El Puente were on hand to receive the award; acompañada tam-bién por Silvia Salgado González, Secre-tary of the El Puente Patronato and Leonicia, a beneficiary of El Puente.

The “Distintivo Queretano Triple C-2011” was issued by a group of companies, foundations, and universities who aim to foster and recognize the culture of social responsibility in industrial, educational, and government environments in the State of Querétaro. It is designed to be an annual award.

The organizations chosen for this year’s Triple C award will be included in the first directory of the select group who earned this recognition of their contribu-tions to the Querétaro community. Con-gratulations to El Puente for being among the first group!

peranza fue objeto de reconocimiento

público como parte de un programa

recién creado en el Estado de Queréta-

ro. El “Distintivo Queretano Triple C-

2011” fue otorgado a instituciones sin

fines de lucro y de servicio social consi-

deradas “confiables, corresponsables, y

comprometidas en beneficio de un capi-

tal e impacto social en nuestra comuni-

dad”, precisó durante la ceremonia Ma.

Fueron seleccionadas como resultado de una extensa evaluación que exigió la entrega de comprobantes de legalidad, logros, longevidad, laborar únicamente en el estado de Querétaro, tener estruc-tura profesional y varias fuentes de in-greso.

El Gobernador del Estado de Querétaro, José Calzada Rovirosa, su esposa, Sandra Albarrán de Calzada, y Tonatiuh Salinas Muñoz, Secretario de Desarrollo Susten-table, fueron algunos de los represen-tantes de varias organizaciones reunidas en el Teatro de la República para la ce-remonia. Mary Elizabeth Charlot-Cruz, Presidente de la Mesa Directiva de El Puente, Leonor Noriega, Directora del programa, y JoEllen Campos de Amigos de El Puente estuvieron presentes para recibir el premio, acompañada también por Silvia Salgado González, Secretaria del Patronato de El Puente y Leonicia, un beneficiara de El Puente.

El “Distintivo Queretano Triple C-2011” fue expedido por un grupo de compañ-ías, fundaciones y universidades cuyos objetivos son el fomentar y reconocer la cultura de la responsabilidad social en los ámbitos industrial, educativo y gu-bernamental del estado. Está diseñado para ser un reconocimiento anual.

Las organizaciones seleccionadas para el distintivo Triple C de este año serán in-cluidas en el primer directorio del selec-to grupo que se ganó este reconocimien-to de su contribución a la comunidad Queretana. ¡Felicidades a El Puente por formar parte del primer grupo!

A lo largo de sus 16 años en operación, El Puente se ha valido de la ayuda de voluntarios de México, los EE.UU. y Eu-ropa para ayudar a sus jóvenes benefi-ciarios. Esta generosa ayuda fue cele-brada la tarde del 12 de mayo.

Los estudiantes de El Puente necesitan urgentemente mejores computadoras para sus tareas escolares, para investi-gaciones y su exploración personal del mundo. A través del sitio web del Pro-grama de Asociación del Cuerpo de Paz (Peace Corps Partnership Program), Charles Goldsmith, voluntario del Cuer-po de Paz México, reunió casi $4,100 dólares donados por amistades y fami-liares en los EE.UU. para comprar com-putadoras nuevas y equipo relacionado. El 12 de mayo, Kathleen (Kitty) Kaping, Subdirectora del Cuerpo de Paz México, hizo la presentación official del cheque para el equipo nuevo a Mary Elizabeth Charlot Arellanos, presidente de la Mesa Directiva de El Puente.

El evento no fue únicamente acerca de computadoras. Al evento asistieron va-rios voluntarios locales: mexicanos que apoyan a El Puente, miembros de la Mesa Directiva, Amigos de El Puente (un grupo de residentes de Querétaro que ayudan a El Puente), voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz y otras amistades. La promoción de la cultura del voluntaria-do es el tema del Cuerpo de Paz este año por su 50º aniversario, y los jóvenes de El Puente reflejaron esta idea en sus comentarios durante el evento. Olvera y Azucena García Morales, tres de los beneficiarios actuales de El Puen-te, hablaron acerca de sus experiencias. Elizabeth expresó el punto de vista de todos cuando dijo, “…todos *los benefi-ciarios y voluntarios de El Puente] cre-cemos como seres humanos cuando trabajamos juntos por el bienestar común”.

La velada terminó con empanadas y bocadillos preparados por los estudian-tes de El Puente. Todos los asociados con El Puente agradecieron esta oportu-nidad para celebrar los logros de la or-ganización los pasados 16 años ¡y espe-ran con anticipación la continuación de sus logros en el futuro! ******************************** Through its 16 years of operation, El Puente has relied on the assistance of volunteers from Mexico, the U.S., and Europe, to help its young beneficiaries. This generous assistance was celebrated on the evening of May 12th.

The students at El Puente urgently need improved computers for school assign-ments, research, and personal explora-tion of the world. Through the Peace Corps Partnership Program web site, Peace Corps Mexico volunteer Charles Goldsmith raised nearly US$4,100 ($48,667 pesos) from friends and family in the U.S. to purchase new computers and related equipment. On May 12, Kathleen (Kitty) Kaping, Deputy Director of Peace Corps Mexico, officially pre-

sented a check for the new equipment to Mary Elizabeth Charlot Arellanos, President of the El Puente Board of Di-rectors.

But the evening was about more than computers. The event was attended by several local volunteers: Mexican sup-porters, Board members, Amigos de El Puente (a group of Querétaro residents who assist El Puente), Peace Corps vol-unteers, and other friends. Promoting the culture of volunteerism is the theme of the Peace Corps’ 50th anniversary this year and the young men and women at El Puente reflected this idea in their remarks at the event. Elizabeth Pascual Ventura, Ramona Medina Olvera, and Azucena García Morales, three of the current El Puente beneficiaries, spoke about their experiences. Elizabeth ex-pressed the views of everyone when she said that ‘..all of us -- [the El Puente beneficiaries and volunteers] -- grow as human beings when we work together for the greater good’.

The El Puente students will be doing a community service program this sum-mer, as they do each year, in a small community in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro. They actually run a sum-mer school to help local children with reading and math skills. Children who attend earn points and at the end of the program can exchange the points for toys, clothes or school materials. Other items are donated to the com-munity in general. If you would like to donate any items that may help them, please contact Sarah Ash at [email protected]

El curso de verano / Summer Course

Los estudiantes de El Puente van a hacer un programa de servicio comuni-tario este verano, como lo hacen cada año, en una pequeña comunidad en la Sierra Gorda de Querétaro.

Dan curso de verano para ayudar a niños del lugar con habilidades de lec-tura y matemáticas. Los niños que asis-ten ganan puntos y, al final del pro-grama, pueden intercambiar los pun-tos por juguetes, ropa o materiales escolar. Otros elementos son donados a la comunidad en general.

El Festival de Comunidades Extranjeras, un evento que reúne los muchos resi-dentes extranjeros de Querétaro para mostrar las culturas, cocinas, y turismo de sus países nativos, tuvo lugar en el Parque Bicentenario el 3, 4, y 5 de junio de 2011. Más de 40 países de las Améri-cas, Europa, Asia, y África participaron en el Festival. El puesto de los EE.UU fue patrocinado conjuntamente por El Puente de Esperanza, dado sus vínculos con los EE.UU, y el Cuerpo de Paz de los EE.UU. Los jóvenes y personal de El Puente, y voluntarios de los Amigos de El Puente y el Cuerpo de Paz estaban allá para recibir a los vistantes.

Nuestro puesto fue adornado para evo-car el paisaje escabroso de la región suroeste de los EE.UU y ofrecimos comi-da y actividades para honrar las tradicio-nes de los pueblos indígenas de aquella zona. Los visitantes al festival pudieron disfrutar pan frito estilo indígena con frijoles, los tamales estilo navajo , y bar-bacoa de lomo de cerdo, preparados por una chef local talentosa la que usó recetas auténticas. Dimos la bienvenida a los adultos al puesto con el reto de armar un rompecabezas de los estados de los EE.UU, y entretuvimos a los niños con páginas para colorear con imágenes de temas indígenas y haciendo objetos con cuentitas.

El Cuerpo de Paz celebra este año su 50 aniversario con el tema de promover la cultura del voluntariado. Los voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz México trabajaron en el puesto durante los tres días del even-to y explicaron a los visitantes tanto las labores del Cuerpo de Paz alrededor el mundo como sus experiencias persona-les en México. Esta explicación fue rela-cionada con el trabajo hecho por volun-tarios para El Puente and muchos visi-tantes llenaron un formulario expresan-do su interés en apoyar a esta organiza-ción no lucrativa en Querétaro.

¡El Festival fue un gran éxito y una opor-tunidad maravillosa de aprender acerca de los países de nuestros vecinos! *******************************

The Festival de Comunidades Extran-jeras (Festival of Foreign Communities), an event that brings together the many foreign residents of Querétaro to show the cultures, cuisines, and tourism of their native countries, took place at the Parque Bicentenario on June 3, 4, and 5, 2011. More than 40 countries from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa par-ticipated in the Festival. The U.S. booth was jointly sponsored by El Puente de Esperanza, given its ties to the U.S., and the Peace Corps. The kids and staff of El Puente, and volunteers from the Amigos de El Puente and Peace Corps were there to greet visitors.

Our booth was decorated to evoke the rugged landscape of the southwestern region of the U.S. and we offered food and activities to honor the traditions of the indigenous peoples of that area. Visitors to the Festival were able to en-joy Indian fried bread with beans, Na-vajo tamales, and barbecued pork, pre-pared by a talented local chef using au-thentic recipes. We welcomed adults into the booth with the challenge of assembling a puzzle map of the states of the U.S., and entertained children with coloring pages of indigenous themes and making objects with beads.

The Peace Corps is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with the theme of promoting the culture of volunteerism. Volunteers from Peace Corps Mexico staffed the booth throughout the three-day event and explained to visitors both the work done by Peace Corps around the world as well as their personal ex-periences in Mexico. This discussion was linked to the work being done by volunteers for El Puente and many visi-tors completed a form expressing their interest in supporting this non-profit organization in Querétaro.

The Festival was a great success and a wonderful opportunity to learn about the native countries of our neighbors!

Sarah Ungerer—Presidente / President: Sarah llegó a Querétaro hace un poco más de un año y ya se adaptó bastante bien a la vida en México. Dejando atrás su trabajo anterior de consejera de inversiones, ahora se dedica a impartir clases de conversación en inglés en el Instituto Queretano San Javier y, además, se ha convertido en alumna de español y de la cocina mexicana. Se siente honrada de ser la presidenta de la Mesa Directiva de Amigos de El Puente de Esperanza y está muy emocionada de trabajar con todos los Amigos para ayudar a un grupo de jóvenes que tanto nos inspiran ¡y que son tan merecederos!

Sarah arrived in Querétaro just over a year ago and has adapted quite well to life in Mexico. Having left her investment management career behind, she now teaches English conversation at Instituto Queretano San Javier and, in turn, has converted herself into a student of the Spanish language and Mexican cuisine. She is honored to be serving as President of the Amigos de El Puente de Esperanza Board of Directors and is excited to work with all the Amigos to help such an inspiring and worthy group of young people! Angeles Peréz-Verdi - Tesora / Treasurer: Nacida en la ciudad de México, estudió psicología en la UNAM y obtuvo una Maestría en educación en la Universidad de Columbia, Nueva York. Vivió en Nueva York y en Boston por 9 años. Actualmente trabaja en educación aquí en Querétaro, donde vive con su marido y sus dos hijas. Recientemente terminó una Maestría en terapia familiar en la IFAC. Le encanta trabajar con la gente y también le gusta la lectura.

Born in Mexico City, she studied Psychology at the UNAM and earned a Masters Degree in Education at Columbia University, New York. She lived in New York and Boston for 9 years. She currently works in education here in Querétaro, where she lives with her two daughters and husband. She recently finished a Masters in Family Therapy at the IFAC. She loves to work with people and to read. Anna Barlow - Secretaria / Secretary: Ha vivido en México 7 años y está contenta de estar en Querétaro. Es bibliotecaria; le gusta leer, correr, cocinar y pasar tiempo con familiares y amigos. Está feliz de ser miembro de Amigos de El Puente, ayudando a tener un buen impacto a los estudiantes El Puente.

She has lived in Mexico 7 years and happy to be in Querétaro. She is a librarian and likes read, run, cook, and spend time with family and friends. She is happy to be a member of Amigos de El Puente helping to make a difference to El Puente students. Chris Leonard - Coordinadora de voluntarios / Volunteer Coordinator: Chris ha vivido en Querétaro con su pareja desde enero del 2010 y es trabajadora social clínica licenciada. Está emocionada de participar en El Puente como coordinadora de voluntarios.

Chris has lived in Querétaro with her partner since January 2010 and is a licensed clinical social worker. She is excited to be involved with El Puente as volunteer coordinator. (cont’d p. 9)

Sarah Ash - Relaciones públicas, comunicaciones y membrecía / Public Relations, Communications & Membership: Sarah es británica; ha vivido en los EE.UU y ahora vive en México. Tiene una maestría y trabajó para revistas y

publicaciones. Ella y su marido tienen dos hijos y han encontrado que Querétaro es un lugar maravilloso para las familias.

Le gusta cocinar, la jardinería, la lectura y la fotografía. Está encantada de ayudar a los brillantes y dedicados estudiantes

Sarah is British; has lived in the US and now Mexico. She has a Masters degree and worked in magazines and publishing. She and her husband have two sons and find Querétaro to be a wonderful, family-friendly place. She enjoys cooking, gardening, reading and photography. She is thrilled to be assisting the bright, dedicated students of El Puente by serving on the board of Amigos.

Laura Martín - Coordinadora de Eventos / Events Coordinator: Laura es de la Ciudad de México y es chef. Tiene una maravillosa familia que incluye a dos hermosos niños y un marido ejemplar. Le gusta cocinar (por supuesto), organizar eventos, leer y tener muchos amigos. También le encanta ayudar a los estudiantes de El Puente porque cree que los estudiantes mexicanos jóvenes tienen mucho potencial para tener un gran impacto y ayudar a nuestro país , es sólo cuestión de darles un pequeño empujoncito para que puedan triunfar. Laura is from Mexico City and is a chef. She has a wonderful family of two sweet boys and a great husband. She loves to cook (of course), organize events, read, and make lots of friends. She loves to help the students of El Puente because she believes that young Mexican students have a lot of potential to make a big difference and help our country; it is only matter of giving them a little push so they can succeed.

Miembros-en-general / Members-at-Large: Lars Notholt: Después de pasar los primeros 20 años de su vida en la ciudad de México, Lars regresó a México el pasado abril para establecerse en Querétaro. Su oficio es ingeniero mecánico. Sintió conmoción tanto en su mente como en su corazón por los estudiantes y el personal de El Puente; y por esta razón ahora participa en la Mesa Directiva de Amigos de El Puente de Esperanza. Al combinar un enfoque bien pensado y planeado con un espíritu de servicio social, él cree que Amigos sí puede tener y tendrá un buen impacto en la vida de los muchachos de El Puente!

After spending the first 20 years of his life growing up in Mexico City, Lars returned back to Mexico last April to settle down in Querétaro. An engineer by trade, his heart and mind were moved by the students and staff at El Puente; and for this reason, now serves on the Amigos de El Puente de Esperanza Board of Directors. oportunidades a personas de escasos recursos económicos de zonas rurales e indígenas para que, me-

diante una educación integral, se capaciten y desarrollen para afrontar la vida con dignidad.

The mission of El Puente de Esperanza is to offer oppor-tunities to very low income people in rural areas, in-

cluding indigenous populations, so that by receiving a comprehensive education, they will develop them-
