Junto con unas mujeres que

apoyamos, Cepia inició un

proyecto de huerta orgánica

detrás de nuestro centro en

Huacas, para aprender juntos

como alcanzar una

independencia alimentaria.

Ya construimos un composte

y sembramos varias plantas

en botellas de plástico

recuperadas. Luego

preparemos el terreno para

hacer los tablones.

A few women who get

support from Cepia started

with us a project of organic

garden behind our center in

Huacas, in order to learn

together how to get a food

independance. We already

built a compost and planted

several plants in

reused plastic bottles. Then

we will prepare the field in

order to build garden beds.

Board of Directors

On August 27, CEPIA celebrated its general assembly.

Olivia Benavides has been offering her volunteer services

to CEPIA over the last years with a lot of dedication and

love. We wish her good luck in her new adventures!

Melina d'Alolio has been elected as a new Board

member. Melina is a renowned architect from San Jose

and developer of Las Ventanas de Playa Grande. She

donated all the plans of the CEPIA community center.

We are very pleased to welcome her on Board!

French-German Prize of Human Rights

CEPIA won the French-German Prize o Human Rights 201

in Costa Rica! The French and German Ambassadors in San

Jose gave a 2000$ check to Laetitia Deweer in order to

support 2 micro businesses developed with CEPIA:

Harmonia Pura (manicure, pedicure, facial or massage at

home! Call 89119628 or 88540206) and GuanArte (craft

and decoration by Guanacaste women, contact us!). This

prize recognizes the work of CEPIA towards the

empowerment of women and sustainable development.

Francés-alemán Premio de los Derechos Humanos

CEPIA gana el Premio Franco-Alemán de Derechos Humanos o 2012 en Costa Rica! Los embajadores de

Francia y Alemania en San José dieron $ 2000 a Laetitia Deweer para apoyar 2 microempresas desarrolladas con CEPIA: Harmonía Pura (manicure, pedicure, facial o un masaje de llamada en casa 89119628 o 88540206!) Colaboraciones con la ULICORI

CEPIA empezó a trabajar

con los estudiantes

universitarios de la

Universidad Libre de Costa

Rica (ULICORI). Los

estudiantes están a cargo de

identificar a los niños con

discapacidades y problemas

de desarrollo, con necesidad

de terapia física. Estos niños

recibirán fisioterapia gratis

cada semana en CEPIA a

partir de enero 2013. La

universidad también envía a

los estudiantes para la

práctica profesional en

Trabajo Social. Agradecemos

especialmente Yanela

Vallejos, Cristina Martín y

Carolina Varela en este

proyecto conjunto!

Collaborations with the ULICORI

CEPIA started to work with university students from the Universidad Libre de Costa

Rica (ULICORI). The students are identifying the children with disabilities and

developmental problems, in need of Physical Therapy. These children will receive free

physical therapy every week at CEPIA starting in January. The university also sends

students for professional practice in Social Work. We specially thank Yanela Vallejos,

Cristina Martin and Carolina Varela in this joint project!

El segundo semestre empezó con fuerza y entusiasmo! Muchos

voluntarios comenzaron clases extraescolares en las escuelas y terminan el sábado 8 de diciembre cuando festejamos el evento Puertas Abiertas donde los alumnos hacen una pequeña presentación, organizamos juegos, comida y baile! 9am-12pm

The second half began with vigor and enthusiasm! Many

volunteers started school classes in schools which end on Saturday December 8 when we celebrate the Open House event where students make a short presentation, we organize games, food and dancing! 9:00 a.m. to 12:00p.m

Food Bank During our internship at CEPIA

we are in charge a food bank. It

is a new project where the main

goal is to help poor women and

their children. The project

concerns eleven women; seven

of them clean at CEPIA and the

rest collect tabs from cans to

make jewelry. By offering them

a job we try to empower the

ladies and give them a sense of

pride and independence. In

return we provide them with

basic groceries montly.

Banco de Alimentos

Durante nuestro intercambio en

CEPIA nosotras estamos a cargo

de un banco de alimentos. Es un

proyecto nuevo cuyo objetivo

principal es el de ayudar a

mujeres pobres y sus hijos. El

proyecto consiste de once

mujeres; siete de estas

colaboran con la limpieza en

CEPIA y el resto recogen tapillas

de latas para hacer joyería. Al

ofrecerles un trabajo nosotras

tratamos de empoderar a estas

mujeres y darles un sentido de

orgullo e independencia. A

cambio les proveemos sus

necesidades alimenticias básicas

mensualmente.

Female Youth Empowerment Workshop at Huacas School

I am implementing a positive youth development workshop with lessons

designed to empower young girls to be true to themselves, to serve as a

positive force for their community, and to grow into responsible parents. We

discuss topics of self-esteem, kindness, respect, confidence, and peer-

pressure. This 8-week curriculum will culminate in a community project that

allows the girls to work together and give back to their local community.

Taller Juvenil Femenino Empoderamiento en Huacas Escuela

Yo estoy poniendo en práctica un taller para niñas que tiene lecciones

diseñadas para empoderar a las niñas a ser fieles a sí mismos, para servir

como una fuerza positiva en la comunidad, y de convertirse en madres

responsables. Discutimos temas de autoestima, amabilidad, respeto,

confianza, y la presión de grupo. Este taller de 8 semanas culminará en un

proyecto comunitario que permite a las niñas de trabajar juntos y mejorar su

comunidad

Surfers, Golf fanatics, community supporters and Robert August fan's alike, we would like to send a

Annual Robert August “Surf n Turf” Charity Challenge is right around the corner and we are looking

for businesses and individuals to support us! 100% of this tournament profits are donated to CEPIA,

the non-profit organization that helps the children’s shelter, improves schools, organizes sports and

educational activities for the local children, prevents teenagers participating in gangs and violence,

Eco-Cultour

At CEPIA, I’ve been spending

most of my time working with

two local youth groups –

members of CEPIA’s own Grupo

de Jovenes and the Huacas-wide

Comite de Jovenes. The

teenagers from Grupo de

Jovenes are developing a micro-

business to try to share the

relationship between the local

culture and the environment

with tourists. I’ve been helping

get this great idea, cleverly

called EcoCulTour, off the

ground. In addition, I’ve been

working with Comite de Jovenes

to develop a community-wide

recycling center here at CEPIA

and raise awareness about the

importance of recycling.

En cepia, se está trabajando con

jóvenes en dos proyectos

diferentes – con el Grupo de

Jóvenes de cepia y el Comité de

Jóvenes de Huacas. Los niños del

Grupo de Jóvenes están

desarrollando una

microempresa para compartir

con los turistas la relación entre

la cultura local y el medio

ambiente. El proyecto se llama

EcoCulTour. Además, se está

trabajando con el Comité de

Jóvenes para crear un centro de

reciclaje para todas las personas

en Huacas y sus alrededores y

educar a la gente sobre la

importancia de reciclar.

Grupo de Jóvenes

Este segundo semestre para nuestro grupo de muchachos ha estado lleno de

actividades y paseos. Por su aporte a la comunidad y su interés en su

crecimiento personal los chicos han tenido la dicha de visitar la finca Tierras,

Nativas de la familia, _________________ donde pasaron una mañana

increíble, al restaurante Las Brisas. También quisiéramos agradecer al banco

Scotiabank por su visita y su charla al grupo de chicos quienes aprendieron

mucho de cómo manejar su dinero. Agradecemos a Jeanne Cordes por la

Logística de la comida cada semana y a los diferentes voluntarios que ofrecen su

tiempo para compartir con los chicos.

Youth Group

This second half for our group of guys has been full of activities and sights. For his

contribution to the community and interest in their personal growth guys have had the

opportunity to visit the farm of the Native Lands where they spent a morning

familia_________________ amazing at the restaurant Las Brisas. We would also like

to thank Scotiabank for visiting and talk to the group of guys who learned a lot about

how to manage your money. We thank Jeanne Cordes by Logistics food each week

and various volunteers who give their time to share with the kids.

Assistance and Observations at Huacas School

Each week I work in the Huacas school offering individualized educational

support to children with learning difficulties. While some of these children only

need minimal assistance in the classroom, others struggle with severe

neurological and social disorders. In these extreme cases, I offer

neuropsychological testing and feedback outside of the classroom and work

closely with CEPIA’s psychologist, Anita, to ensure that these children are

receiving the support they need to reach their fullest potential.

Asistencia y Observaciones en Escuela de Huacas

Cada semana trabajo en la escuela de Huacas para dar apoyo educativo

individualizado a los niños que tienen dificultades de aprendizaje. Algunos de

estos niños sólo necesitan una ayuda mínima en el salón de clases, y otros luchan

con graves trastornos neurológicos y social. En estos casos, ofrezco pruebas

neuropsicológicas y la retroalimentación fuera de la escuela y trabajo en

colaboración con Anita, la psicóloga de CEPIA, para asegurar que estos niños

reciben el apoyo que necesitan para alcanzar su potencial.

NOTICIAS / NEWS

La comida del Banco de Alimentos, llega cada semana y se reparte a 15 familias (un total de 48 niños). También se dona alimentos al equipo de futbol de Cartagena.
