Weekly Reflection

It’s Not Fair – It’s Amazing

If you’re around children, one thing you’re bound to hear sooner or later is, “That’s not fair!” It’s mankind’s oldest contention. Re-member Cain and Abel. When they brought their offerings to God, Abel’s offering was accepted, but not Cain’s. “That’s not fair,” Cain thought in his heart and his resulting anger was the source of humanity’s first murder. Jesus told a parable about a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard, a common practice during the grape harvest. Storms could easily ruin the crop, therefore it was important to harvest as quickly as possible. Work was hard; from dawn to sunset – and the wage was one silver coin, the cost to feed a family for a day. So a day’s work and a full day’s wage were essential to survival. If a man was unable to find work, then his family would not eat that day. If he found work for only a part of the day his family would eat, but not enough to satisfy their hunger. This story isn’t about fairness, it’s about survival. This helps ex-plain some of the dynamics of the story. Can you imagine how deliriously happy the workers who worked one hour were when they received a full day’s wage? No wonder those who were hired first, after seeing the owner’s generosity, expected a bo-nus. Can you imagine their disappointment when they only re-ceived a day’s wage? When they complained the owner an-swered, “I’m not being unfair, since you agreed to work for a denarius? Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?” Today’s parable is about the generosity of God. A person can’t receive just a portion of God’s grace, because God pours out the fullness of grace on all who receive it. Therefore, if there are no limits on grace, how can one person say he deserves more than another? Grace is what we need to survive, and it’s unearned, whether we’ve been faithful for 50 years or 50 minutes. No wonder it’s called Amazing Grace. It has nothing to do with fairness. It’s about unbelievably generous love. And it’s all ours to receive to-day. All we have to do is to open our hearts to it.

Recordemos a Caín y Abel.

Celebrating Outdoors

Our Outdoor Mass on Saturday, September 16, proved a huge success as we joined together as a parish community for our sa-cred liturgy, food, family, and friendship. The afternoon began with a tribute to First Re-sponders and those who serve and have served our country in the military, as peace officers, and medical personnel. In light of events, past and present, this was a poignant expression of our gratitude for those who

respond with courage and selfless care for others. The Mass began with an entrance of flags depicting the sacra-ments followed by those who are preparing to receive these this year. The flags represented Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Marriage, and OLA Parish School. This year’s mass kicked-off the Confirmation Program and many of our youth participated in mass and then a special team building process that culminated in Eucharistic Adoration together in the Bonaventure gym. Many folks stayed to enjoy a BBQ dinner, fellowship, and enter-tainment. This was a fantastic evening that brought together over 1,000 members of our parish. As you can imagine, this is not a typical day at OLA. Many volunteers worked these past few weeks to-gether to make this a special experi-ence for everyone. Without them, this would not happen. With them, the Outdoor Mass was enjoyed by many and high expectations were voiced for next year’s mass. This reminds us that a parish com-munity is a living and vital entity where faith is lived and shared. Assumption Parish is not a museum, a historic landmark of the past, but a community of people who are walking together into the future. Sixty-three years ago, the pioneers of this parish were tasked with building a church and parish house. Since then, many have called OLA home and have received sacraments and the benefits of membership in the parish. Signs of this include the building of a school, convent, and other buildings to address the needs of a growing community. Today, we continue to discover what it means to be a faith community seeking to know, love, and serve the Lord as Missionary Disciples of Jesus Christ. Renova-tion of the school has given us a new plaza as a gathering space where we pray, gather, and celebrate. Our numerous ministries strive to reach out to all in this community and help us draw more closely as the Body of Christ. We are always growing and looking for ways to live faithfully in the Lord. We can never rest on what we have done in the past. If we are satisfied, then we are not building the Kingdom. We seek always to grow and reach out to respond to what the Spirit calls us to be. We stand on the shoulders of the Apostles and Martyrs, and those who inspire us. Be good missionary disciples for others so that together we grow in God love and service

Did you Know?

Pay attention to your surroundings to prevent child abuse.

As a caring adult, you scope out potential dangers in the areas where a child may be for school, birth-

day parties, playdates, outings with friends, etc. Another danger to add to your list is the potential for a child to be lured away into a private area by a predator. Abuse can happen anywhere, even in the most public of places, and parents should be aware of any secluded spots that a predator might use. Avoid spaces where a predator could take action – turn on lights, check empty rooms, and patrol sleeping or playing spaces. NON-PERISHABLE FOOD items are cur-rently needed our parish’s Thanksgiving and Christmas food basket ministry. Items can be placed in the food box in the church vestibule. When you are doing your shopping please pick-up a few extra items for the food baskets. All non-perishable food items are always accepted, but this week’s featured items are Canned Vegetables. Please check labels for expiration date. If you wish for us to do the shopping, you may make a monetary donation to OLA Food Baskets. Thank you for your support. For more details you can contact: Jerry Deal 339-0260.

Eucharistic Minister & Usher Training

There will be a training session for anyone interested in becoming a Eucharistic minister for Sunday Masses, AND anyone interest-ed in becoming an usher at Sunday Masses, on Monday, 9/25 at 7:00 p.m. in the church. Any current EMs and ushers who would like a "refresher" for either ministry are also welcome to attend. Please contact Deacon Don at [email protected], or Diana at [email protected] to RSVP or for more details.

Many Meals

Many Meals serves our parish family and the community as a whole. Guests come each Wednesday for a hot meal and fellowship free of charge. Many thanks to each of you that helped provide a delicious meal of chicken Cacciatore and fettuccini. We had 170 guests and 4 were new to our ministry. We were delighted to welcome 6 new volunteers. Our salutations to the OLA cooks that supplied us with such an abundance of food. The guest were extremely complimentary and grateful. Thank you. We are going to try using one of the classrooms on campus for our clothing outlet. We've come up with the name Saint Ann's Ap-parel. We honor the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and hon-or three living saints at Many Meals. Our beloved Ann Ives, Ann Romero and Ann Dana. We are delighted to honor their work by using their names. The beauty of Many Meals is it is all 100% free to our guests. Your hard work has created an environment where our guests feel loved and a sense of community. We serve at College United Methodist Church, 4300 Telegraph Rd from 6-7pm. The program is self-supporting and thus relies on our dedicated volunteers and donations by our generous parish-ioners For more information, please call (805)642-7966 or email [email protected]. We thank our parishioners for their generosity and continued support of the Many Meals ministry

“As missionary disciples, the Many Meals Ministry provides a weekly meal and fosters fellowship to the

people in our community.”

¿SABIA USTED?

Luz De Soledad (Light of Soledad)

Please join us at the premiere show-ing of Luz De Soledad. This film nar-rates the life of St. Maria Soledad Torres, who advanced the message of Christ's mercy to the sick and dying in the 1850's. She founded the Servants of Mary Ministers to the Sick, whose charism is to bring light into the homes of those who are dying or suffering from a terminal illness. In this film, St. Maria Soledad faced wars, epidemics, reli-gious persecution and difficulties in starting this beautiful community which now has close to 1,500 members spread worldwide in 22 countries. St. Maria Soledad was a woman faithful to the Church and her life is like many women of that time that almost seems hidden from history but had a strong impact in the field of nursing and suffer-ing humanity. The Servants of Mary are registered nurses who provide free home health care and have six commu-nities in the US, three of which is in Los Angeles, New-bury Park and Oxnard. Tickets will be sold after the 9:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Masses today or by call-ing (805) 486-5502.
