Today, the PEN Club is a fully global writers association as well as an active local institution. The present Catalan center is the same one founded in 1922 by the poet López-Picó and the playwright Josep Millàs Raurell, and we are proud to say Catalans have been present since the beginning. The center’s activity was never interrupted by the Civil War, nor by the Franco regime that followed due to a few members who worked in exile abroad or in secrecy in Catalonia. According to our charter, the PEN Club works for freedom of expression and for mutual knowledge and understanding between cultures. Its priorities are to monitor peace, champion freedom of expression, and promote translation. Our association, the center for authors who work in Catalan, is active with a Writers in Prison Committee and has been decisive in creating a Trans-lation and Linguistic Rights Committee and a Committee for Women Writers that fights the persistence of gender discrimination.

Amb aquesta iniciativa, certament ens vamavançar al comerç i la cooperació tecnològica entre elspaïsosdelsud,aixícomamblarestadelmón,quedarre-ramentintentaestablirelnostregovernenelspassosdeci-ditsquefempertenirunllocalaglobalització.

¿Quinssónelsnostresproblemeso«reptes»,perdir-hoambuneufemismepopular?¿Quinessónlesnostresopor-tunitats?L’article27delaDeclaracióUniversaldelsDretshumanséselnostreepígraf:«Tothomhadetenireldretdeparticiparlliurementenlavidaculturaldelacomuni-tatidegaudirdelesarts».

Aquestallibertatd’accésalacreacióielgaudidelesartsi la literaturaésunapartessencialdeldesenvolupamenthumàque, comsabem,eraunaporta tancadadurantelrègimdel’apartheidielsrègimscolonialsqueelvanpre-cedir. Fins i tot abans del racisme institucionalitzat del’apartheid, la discriminació racial prohibia l’entrada alsteatres,cinemes,escolesdedramatúrgia,artimúsica,es-devenimentsculturals... ibiblioteques,alamajoriadelapoblació.

Delsllegatsnegatiusqueharebutelnostrepaísamblavictòriadelallibertat,laprohibiciód’accésalesbibliote-queséslaquemésensconcerneixdinsdelsparàmetresdelmeutemad’avui.

Vam heretar una població en la qual el vint-i-nou percentdelnostrepobleerailletratogairebé.Nohihavianihihaencaraunaxifraquepermetidistingirels illetratsdels analfabets funcionals. En les immenses ciutats dor-mitoripràcticamentnohihaviabibliotequesmunicipals,només els quatre prestatges de llibres donats per benefi-cènciaauncentrecomunitari;alesescoles,noméshihaviaelsllibresprescritspelprograma,cadascundelsqualsha-

viadesercompartitpertresoquatrealumnes,icapllibredelecturaperplaer.Aleszonesrurals,quellavorsalber-gavengairebélameitatdelapoblaciótotaldelpaís,nohihaviabibliotequesdecapmenaperacappersonaquenofosblanca.Espotdirque la literaturacomabasede lacultura era inexistent per a la majoria dels sud-africans.hi havia una sèrie de petites editorials que sobrevivienambvalentiaiempentaalsincreïblesobstaclesdelespro-hibicions de llibres a l’apartheid. També van sobreviureorganitzacions d’escriptors, tot sovint fent manifesta laparaulaprohibida, fent-laviure–al risc tantde l’organit-zaciócomdels lectorsde l’obra–a travésde les lecturespúbliquesqueesfeienfinsque,tambéelles,vanserdecla-radesindesitjablesalaGasetadelGovern.

Sortintcomsortíemd’unaEdatFoscaperentraralallumambelsullsparpellejant,estàvempreparatsperaunRenaixement.Enelsdarrerstemps,elconcepteanun-ciatdeRenaixementafricàharebutunabufetadalamen-table,ambconflictesamassapaïsosdelcontinent,massapaïsos, també, arrelats a una herència negativa de l’eracolonialiquehandonatunnouimpulsterribleal ’avarí-ciailacorrupciódelsseuslídersihanencoratjataquestsmalsambl’intercanvideconcessionsperpartd’aquellsdelmónexteriorquecontrolenelsproductesmésrendi-blesdelmón.Elpetroliielsdiamantsdel’Àfricasónlafontdemoltsdelsterriblesconflictesd’Àfrica;encomp-tes de ser un gran recurs de desenvolupament, s’hanconvertitencausadedevastaciódelspaïsosqueelsinter-canvienperarmes.

Però el Renaixement és un concepte transcendental.Desdelperíodedelseglexivperalqualvaserencunyatperprimercopelterme,semprehadestacatimplícitamentelpoderregeneradordelesarts.¿Finsaquinpuntl’hemutilitzat,l’estemutilitzantsatisfactòriament?

Totiquehihaesforçoscontinuatstantanivelldegoverncomdelsprojectesdedonantsd’ultramarperreduirl’anal-fabetismefuncional,araésalavoradelaxifradel29percentd’abans,superioraleszonesruralsperòtambéelevatals pobles i ciutats. Biblioteques: les biblioteques repatà-niesdeciutatspetitesquevantrobarlamaneradeprohi-birl’entradaalslectorsnegresfinsitotquanlalleiexigiaques’obrissinatothom,ahoresd’ara,engeneral, jahanclaudicat.Continuenalmateixlloconeren,enzonestra-dicionalmentblanques,llunyd’onviuenmajoritàriamentelsciutadansnegresdelesciutats.Alesescolesencaranohihabiblioteques, cosaquenoésungranultratgesiespensa que moltes escoles rurals i d’assentaments encaranotenenpupitresni lavabos...KaderAsmal, l’actualmi-nistred’Educació,éslaprimerapersonaqueocupaaquestcàrrec,d’ençàquetenimunaadministraciónoracial,quehavisitatpersonalmentaquestesescolesis’hapoguthor-roritzartantperlescondicionsd’ensenyamentcomperlamagnituddelnivellgenerald’analfabetisme,quedefetnosolamentafectaeldretdel’individusinótambél’eficiènciaioportunitatenelmercatlaboral.Elministres’hapropo-sat,primerdeparaulaiarajahacomençatadur-hoalapràctica,elrenaixementfísicde lesescoles ihaestablertcomaprioritatelfidel’analfabetismeenelterminidecinc

Lesconseqüènciesd’aquestanalfabetismedemassesperalaliteraturasud-africana,peralsescriptorssud-africans,sónlamesuradelpresentidelfuturdelaliteraturaaSud-àfrica.Senselectors,nohihaescriptors.Totssabem,totselsescriptorssud-africans,queencaraqueescrivimperatotsicadascundelsquellegeixenlanostraobra–queésper a ells–tenimunpúbliclectorllastimosamentpetitenproporcióalapoblaciódelpaís.Finsquenoaconseguiml’alfabetització, i una gran disponibilitat de llibres a lesbiblioteques,aquestalimitaciónocanviarà;finsquenoespubliqui literatura general, literatura popular, novel·les,biografiesihistòriesdedetectiusenllengüesafricanes,inonomésfulletons,lasituaciónocanviarà.Calaplaudir,deixant de banda les publicacions acadèmiques, els pio-nersenlapublicaciódeliteraturaenllenguaafricana,comperexemplelasèrieMamelaAfrikadeheinemann.

Els protagonistes de la literatura infantil han estatexpulsatsdelaconsciènciainfantilperdimonisiprotago-nistesquesaltenigiren,percaresimmensesenprimerpla,per lavisióquetenenelsadultsde l’aspectedelmal i laimatgeamableirossadelavirtut.

No em queixo del desplaçament de hans ChristianAndersenidelDoctorDolittle–queentotcasnomésper-tanyienalainfànciaburgesablanca–,peròempreocupaelfetquenohihagiespaiperquèescreïnpersonatgesadmi-rats i estimats, allà on la imatge ha ocupat el lloc de laParaula, en la imaginació del nen i, per tant, que s’hagiperdutaquestaformameravellosad’educació,delsusosdel’alfabetització.Elnenesconverteixenun«lector»d’imat-gespreparadesiimposades,nounlectordeparaulesqueimpulsenelpensamentilaimaginació.hihaunapèrduaenelpotenciald’originalitat,eneldesenvolupamentdelamirada,enelseusentitdeconceptualitzacióindividual.

Jatenimcomamínimunageneracióque,encomptesdellegir,mira.Sí,ésveritatquelesimatgesdetelevisióvanacompanyadesdelaparauladita,peròéslaimatgelaquedecideixfinsaquinpunthadesersecundarielpaperdelaParaula.Potserenelsdocumentalsesconcedeixa laPa-rauladitaunpaperessencial,peròalesminisèriesialescomèdies–lamanerad’explicarhistòriesdelmeditelevi-

siu– la paraula escrita és un accessori, consistent única-mentenelvocabularimésbanalilimitat,delaimatge,delaGranImatge.

Qualsevolquehagidirigittallersperajovesaspirantsaescriptorssap,comhoséjo,queaquestvocabularidelessèriesdetelevisióéstotelquesóncapaçosdedominarelsaspirants per expressar el que tot sovint són idees origi-nals.

«Unaimatgevalmésquemilparaules.»Fosquifosquivainventaraquestadagi–unentèsenRelacionsPúbliques,sensdubte–,larèplicaés:«¿Durantquantdetemps?»

Laimatgedesapareixdelapantalla;perrecordar-las’hadedisposard’unaparell,unapila,unabateria,d’unaccésaunaconnexióelèctrica;laParaulaEscrita,encanvi,estàal’abastsensenecessitarres.Elllibrequetensalamàelpotsllegiral’autobús,alllit,fentcua,alcamp,alcimd’unamuntanya,alcostatd’unriu,enunembúsdetrànsit.L’es-criptor americà William Gass expressa molt millor quenojoquèéslaParaulaEscritaenelseuhàbitat,elllibre.EscriuGass:«Noentendremquèéselllibreiperquèunllibre té el valor que tenen moltes persones i fins i totésmenyssubstituïblequeunapersona,sioblidemcomésd’importantelseucos,l’estructuraques’haconstruïtpermantenirunideslesfrasesdelallenguaatravésdemoltesaventures i de molt temps. Escriptorsieditorssónelsguardiansdelqueés–desdeGutenberg– l’eina més preciosa de la cultura, la mésdemocràtica: laParaulaEscrita impresa.Segurament, lapreguntaquehihaescritaa laparetdavantdelspartici-pantsdetotesicadascunadelesconferènciesliteràriesés:cominvestimdepoder,ambalfabetitzacióibiblioteques,nouslectorsquealseutorncrearannousescriptors.Aramateixensestàmirant...

Aixídoncs,elmòbilesconverteixenelllibredelfutur,rivalitzant, en tot cas, amb la portabilitat del volum im-près.Noespotdescartarquel’escriptorsesentiseduït(¿o

hauriadedircorromput?)per«publicar»d’aquestamane-ra.Aparentment,espagabé;millorqueelsroyaltisimésràpid.Laseducciódelaimatge,llunydelaparaulaimpre-sa,s’haestèsjaenuncasalaconversióenimatgedelma-teix procés d’escriptura. Un escriptor americà anomenatWilliamShatner,dequinocrecquecapdenosaltreshagisentitparlarmai,haencaixatunapetitacàmeraespecialalseuordinadoriesdisposaa«escriureunanovel·ladecièn-cia ficció observat per una webcam a l’ordinador». ‘InthebeginningwastheWord.The Word was with God, signified God’s word, the

WordthatwasCreation.ButoverthecenturiesofhumanculturetheWordhastakenonothermeanings,secularaswell as religious.Tohave theWordhas come tobesynonymous with ultimate authority, with secularprestige,withawesome,sometimesdangerouspersuasion;tohaveprimetime,aTVtalkshow,tohavethegiftofthegabaswellasthatofspeakingintongues.

The Word flies through space, it is bounced fromsatellites,nownearerthanithaseverbeentotheheavenfrom which it was believed to have come. But its mostsignificanttransformationoccurredforus–thewriters

–aeons ago –and it was in Africa– when it was firstscratchedonastonetabletortracedonpapyrus,whenitemerged from sound to spectacle, from being read asseries of signs, and then a script; and travelled fromparchmenttoGutenberg.Forthisisthegenesisstoryofthe writer. It is the story that wrote you or me intobeing.

Itwas,strangely,adoubleprocess,creatingatthesametimeboththewriterandtheverypurposeofthewriteras a mutation in the agency of human culture. It wasboth ontogenesis as the origin and development of an

individual being, and the adaptation, in the nature ofthatindividual,specificallyto thenatureofontogenesis,theoriginanddevelopmentofthe individualbeing.

Forwewritersareevolvedforthattask.LiketheprisonerincarceratedwiththejaguarinBorges’story,‘TheGod’sScript’,whowastryingtoread,inarayoflightwhichfellonlyonceadayontheanimal,themeaningofbeingfromthe markings on the animal’s pelt, we spend our livesattempting to interpret through the Word the readingswe take in the societies of which we are part. It is inthissense, this inextricable, ineffable participation, thatwritingisalways–andatonce–anexplorationofselfandtheworld;ofindividualandcollectivebeing.

WritersinAfricainthe20thcenturyhaveinterpretedthegreatesteventsonourcontinentsincetheabolitionofslavery,fromThingsFallingApartinthecolonialandpost colonial regimes, crossing The River Betweenoppressionandliberation,passingUpInArmsthroughThe Fog At The Season’s End, Down Second Avenue,singing The Song of Lawino on the Mission to Kala,overcoming Nervous Conditions and discarding TheMoney order as the price of bondage, enduringThe house of hunger, challenging the World ofStrangers created by racism, recognizing we wereshirkingresponsibility,asFools,forBlamingourselvesonhistory,ConfessingasAnAlbinoTerrorist,telling,asTheInterpreters,theToughTaleofthestruggleforfreedom.’

AndIconcludedbysaying ‘There isnoprizeofferedforcorrectlyindentifyingthewritersofthebookswhosetitles you should recognize strung together to tell thestoryintheaccountI’vegustgiven,norwillitbenecessaryto point out that these titles and writers are only arandom few of those who have made manifest in ourliteraturetheembattledwakeningofourcontinent.Wehave known that our task was to bring to our people’sconsciousnessandthatoftheworldthetruedimensionsof racism and colonialism beyond those that can bereachedbythemedia,thenewspapercolumnandscreenimage,howevervaluablethesemaybe.Wewritershavesought the fingerprint of flesh on history. The oddsagainstdevelopingasawriterabletotakeonthishugeresponsibilityhave,formanyofourwriters,beengreat.ButasAngolanAgostinhoNetosaid,andprovedinhisownlife;“Ifwritingisoneoftheconditionsofourbeingalive,youcreatethatcondition.”’

Sincethattime,eightyearsago,muchhaschangedinourcountry.Inmanyways,changedutterly.Theoldlawswhich were the grim scaffolding within which SouthAfrican lives were constructed have been imploded,demolished.Ascitizens,wearefree;aswriterswearefree:wemaywritewhatweknow,withoutfearorcensorship.InthewordsofSalmanRushdie,wemaydooneof thethingshesaidawritersisfor:tosaytheunsayable,speaktheunspeakable,askdifficultquestions.

Idon’tthinkthatanywritersamongushavesufferedwhat Eastern European writers experienced after theend of Soviet satellite existence in countries such ashungary: a kind of culture-shock bewilderment thatresulted in writer’s block. If there has been a negativereaction–incredibletothinktherecouldbe,inthereliefafterthePretoriagiantofcensorshipwasslain–ithasperhaps been responsible for the small flurry of mea culpa nostalgiacomingfromsomeguilt–aswellasword-processedfiction.Well,Isupposewemustgrantalso,toeveryone,thefreedomofdealingwiththepastinhisorherownway.

Thebroadway ofliteraturecertainlyhasbeenopenedup,adoublehighway.ourcountryhasaffirmedAfricanidentitywiththeotherculturesofourcontinent,stagingfestivals and conferences where artists, writers andintellectuals from its length and breadth come toparticipation of our artists and writers not only inAfricancountries,butaspartofaSouth-Southculturalrecognition that brings an exchange between SouthAfricans and South Americans. In this initiative, wewere indeed in advance of the trade and technologicalcooperation South-South as well as in the rest of theworld,morerecentlybeingpursuedbyourgovernment,inourdeterminedmovesforaplaceinglobalization.

Wherearewenow?Asreadersandwriters,withinachangedcountryandarapidlychangingworldcontext?

Whatareourproblems–‘challenges’beingapopulareuphemism for these. What are our opportunities?

Article27oftheUniversalDeclarationofhumanRightsis out rubric: ‘Everyone shall have the right freely toparticipate in the cultural life of the community, andtoenjoythearts.’

ThisfreedomofaccesstothecreationandenjoymentoftheartsandliteratureasanessentialpartofhumandevelopmentweknowwasacloseddoorinSouthAfricaduringtheapartheidregimeandthecolonialistregimesthatprecededit.Evenbeforetheinstitutionalisedracismofapartheid,racialdiscriminationkeptthemajorityofthepopulationbarredfromtheatres,cinema,drama,artandmusicschools,publicculturalevents-andlibraries.

Thislast,ofthenegativesheritagesourcountryreceivedalongwiththevictoryof freedom, iswhatconcernsusmostwithintheparametersofmysubjecttoday.

We inherited a population in which twenty-ninepercent of our people were illiterate or semiliterate.Therewasandstillisnoseparatefigureforthefunctionallyilliterate or semiliterate. In the vast black dormitorytownships there were virtually no municipal libraries,only the few shelves of charity donated books in acommunitycentre;inschoolsonlytheprescribedbooksrequired for thesyllabus,eachcopyoftentobesharedbythreeor four students, andnobooks for readingaspleasure. For anyone who was no white in the ruralareaswhich then held almost half the country’s totalpopulation,therewerenolibrariesofanykind.Literatureasabasisofculturecanbesaidtohavebeennon-existentfor the majority of the South Africans. There were a

number of small publishing houses that had doughtilyandbravelysurvivedtheincrediblehazardsofapartheidbook-bannings. There were writers’ organisations thatalso had survived, often making the banned wordmanifest, alive –at risk both for the organisations andthe readers of the work- through public readings thatwereoverbeforethey,too,couldbedeclaredundesirableintheGovernmentGazette.

Coming,aswewere,blinkingintothelightfromourDark Age, we were ready for a Renaissance. Now theannouncedconceptoftheAfricanrenaissancehasbeenreceiving a dismaying battering recently, with conflictsin too many countries of the continent, many of them,again,rootedinanegativeinheritanceofthecolonialera,givennewevilimpulsebothinthegreedandcorruptionof their leaders and the encouragement of these inexchangeforconcessionsbythose intheoutsideworldwhocontroltheworld’smostprofitableproducts.Africa’soilanddiamondsarethesourceofmanyAfrica’sterribleconflicts; arms are what they earn for the countrieswherethesehavebecomeacauseofdevastationinsteadofagreatresourceofdevelopment.

But renaissance is a far-reaching concept. Since the14th century period in history for which the term wasfirst coined, it has always implicitly emphasised theregenerativepowerofthearts.howfarhaveweusedit,howsuccessfullyareweusingit?

Although there are continuing efforts at bothgovernmentlevelandoverseasdonorprojectstoreduce

functionalilliteracy,itstillstandsclosetothepreviousfigureoftwenty-ninepercent,highestintheruralareasbutexistentinthetownsandcitiesaswell.Libraries:thelaggardlibrariesinsmalltownsthatfoundsomewaystokeepblackreadersout,evenafterthelawrequiredthatthey should be open to everyone, have mostly by nowcomplied. They are still placed where they were: intraditionallywhiteareas,farfromwherethetowns’blackcitizens still predominantly live. Schools still lacklibraries,whichisnotareproachwhenyouconsiderthatmanyruralschoolsandsquattersettlementschoolsstilllack desks and toilet facilities… Kader Asmal, thepresentMinisterofEducation, is thefirst in thatpost,since we have had our non-racial dispensation, to beappalledatfirst-hand,byboththeconditionsoflearningintheseschools,andtheenormityofthegenerallevelofilliteracy, affecting as it does not only the right of theindividualbutefficiencyandopportunity inthe labourmarket.hehasdedicatedhimselfto,inword,andbegunatoncetocarryoutindeed,thephysicalrenaissanceofthe schools and –a priority– the end of illiteracy in agiven time of five years. Which may be too ambitious,buttheremustbeagoal.

Theconsequences forSouthAfrican literature,SouthAfrican writers, of this massive illiteracy is what thepresentandfutureofwritinginSouthAfricaisallabout.Without readers, therearenowriters.Weallknow,weSouthAfricanwriters,thatalthoughwewritefor anyoneandeveryonewhowillreadourwork–itisfor them–we

have a pitifully small readership in proportion of ourpopulation.Untilwehaveliteracyandthewideavailabilityofbooksinlibraries,thatlimitationwillnotchange:untilwehavepublicationofgeneralliterature,popularliterature,novels, biographies, detectives stories, instead of tractsalone,inAfricanlanguages,thatsituationwillnotchange.Letusapplaud,beyondacademicpublishing,thepioneersin the publication of African language literature, forexampleheinemann’sMamelaAfrikaSeries.

SodoIbelievethereisagreatpotentialreadingpublicout there, ready to take up the great enjoyment ofliterature,ourownwriters’workinAfricanlanguages?

Ido.ButIamawareassurelyweallareofthegreatrival self-appointed, both with plenty of independentcorroboration–theimage.Ifthereisnolibrary,thereisthe TV set; even in the so called ‘informal settlement’areas(howwelovetousetheWordodisguisewhatwe’reashamedof)IseeTVsetsbeingrunoffbatteries.Foralongtime,now–whendidwefirstgetTelevisioninSouthAfrica, the Seventies?– the image has been infiltratingthepoweroftheWordasastimulationofthepowersofthe imagination, the opening-up of human receptivity.Thebed-timestoryofmiddleclasschildhoodhasbeenreplaced by the hours in front of the TV screen. Theheroes of children’s literature have been blasted off tospace out of the child’s consciousness by demons andheroeswhosewhirlingblown-upactions,hugeclose-upfaces,adults’visionofwhatevillookslikeandhowclean-jawedandblonde-tressedvirtueis.

I’mnobemoaningthedisplacementofhansChristianAndersen and Doctor Doolittle –who in any casebelonged only to a white bourgeois childhood– but Iam troubled by the fact that there is no room foradmiredorbelovedcharacterstobecreated,wheretheimage has taken over from the Word, in the child’simagination,andthereforethismostdelightfulformofeducation, of the uses of literacy, is lost. The childbecomesa‘reader’ofready-made,imposedimages,nota reader of words that set the mind and imaginationcreating.Thereisalossinthepotentialoforiginality,the development of vision, in its sense of individualconceptualization.

We already have at least one generation that looksinstead of reads. Yes, TV images are accompanied bythespokenword,butitisthepicturethatdecideshowsecondarytheWord’sroleshallbe.ThespokenWordisperhaps given more recognition as essential todocumentaries,butinminiseriesandsitcoms–thestory-telling of the TV medium– the spoken word is anaccessory, consisting of the most banal and limitedvocabulary,totheimage,theBigPicture.

Anyone who has run workshops for young aspirantwriters will know, as I do, how this TV miniseriesvocabularyisoftenallthattheaspirantscancommandtoexpresswhatareoftenoriginalideas.

‘Apictureisworthathousandwords’.Whoeveritwas–aPublicRelationssavant,nodoubt-whocameupwiththeadage,therejoinderis:‘Forhowlong?’

Theimagedisappearsfromthescreen;therecallityouhavetohaveanapparatus,acell,abattery,accesstoanelectricpowerconnection;theWrittenWordissimplythere,inyourpocket.Thebookinyourhandcanbereadonthebus,inbed,inaqueue,intheveld,onamountaintop,besideastream,inatrafficjam.TheAmericanwriterWilliam Grass expresses far better than I what theWrittenWord,initshome,thebook,is.hewrites:‘Weshall not understand what a book is, and why a bookhasthe value many persons have, and is even lessreplaceablethanaperson,ifweforgethowimportanttoitisitsbody,thebuildingthathasbeenbuilttoholditslinesoflanguagesafelytogetherthroughmanyadventuresandalongtime.Wordsonascreenhavevisualqualities,tobesure,andthesedarkly limntheirshape,buttheyhave no materiality, they are only shadows, and whenthe lightshifts they’llbegone.offthescreen, theydonotwaittobereseen,reread;theyonlywaittoberemade,relit…Icannotargueintheirmargins…’

Writers and publishers are the guardians of what isculture’s most precious –since Gutenberg– most de-mocratic charge, the printed Written Word. how weempower,withliteracyandlibraries,newreaderswhointurn will create new writers, is surely the issue that iswritten on the wall before the participants at any andeveryliteraryconference.Itstaresatusnow…

We are confronted with a new factor. Although itseemssomethingofagimmick,sofar,withone30pagenovel in the USA (Stephen King’s) written for and

‘published’ontheinternet,andonecanhardlyimagineWar and Peace and Remembrance of Things Past republishedinthisway,thereiseverylikelihoodthatatcertainbroadlevelthereisgoingtobeapublicdeprivedfor a lifetime –because the public is going to be told,moreandmore,byinternationalwebsiteswhatitneeds,what cultural fulfillment is– of the pleasures andintellectual fulfillment I have described and quoted.Theyaregoingto‘read’notbooks,buttextspassingonascreen;andsoon,nodoubt,tobeavailable,liketelephonemessages, to appear on the matchbox screens of cellphones.

So the cell phone becomes the book of the future,rivaling, anyway, the printed volume’s portability. Thebeguilement(orshallwesaycorruption?)of thewriterto ‘publish’ in this way cannot be discontinued.Apparentlythemoneyisgood;betterandquickerthanroyalties. The seduction of the image, away from theprintedword,hasextended, inoneinstancealready,tothe very process of writing becoming an image. AnAmerican writer named William Shatner, of whom Ithinknoneofushaseverheard,hasfittedatinyspecialcamera to his computer and is preparing to ‘write hisnext science-fiction novel watched by a webcam onhiscomputer’.The linkageofhis studyathome to theinternetbythismeanswillbringhim$2millionasadealwithasoftwarecompanypromoter.

The vast advancers in IT communications are aninformation revolution that has great possibilities for

social development if well used, which means madeeconomicallyavailabletothemillionsintheworld,theunderdevelopedanddevelopingworld,whose liveswillotherwise be bulldozed by the financial oligarchy ofglobalization.Itisvitalforunderdevelopmentcountriesonourcontinentandelsewhere,togainaccesstointernetinformationtoenablethemtobeawareofandparticipatein decisions made, by international powers, in relationtotheconditionsofaid,tradepreferences,marketspricesfor their products. No-one could question this. Atpresent, the entire continent of Africa has only twopercentoftheworld’saccesstothefacilityofinformationtechnology,whiletheUnitedStatesofAmericahasmorecomputers than the whole of the rest of the worldcombined.But in culture, in the arts and literature, informationdoesnot,itcannot,everreplace,outmode,illumination. And that, all of us, readers all, know comes from theWritten Word in its infinitely portable, self-contained,independenthomebetweenhardorpaperbackcovers.
