Instruments Laboratory in 1937. In 1934 the company switched to the name of its first camera, “Y” named in the honor of Japanese Buddhist God of Mercy.

• When the company sought to begin full scale marketing, it needed a brand name that would be accepted worldwide. It was in 1947 when the company renamed itself to “X”.
