But Junior Cavanaugh Riley returned the ensuing kick-off all the way for an Oriole TD and he got the call for the 2 point conversion as well to put the O’s right back in it, trailing just 16-15. Meskwaki would again answer on their next possession but did not convert their extra point aempt to hold a 22-15 lead. Riley took the snap and connected on a nice lile pass to Senior, Niklas Brede to put the O’s on the 5 yard line. The next play was another snap to Riley who bought me in the back field while Hoogland got open in the back of the end zone for a leaping catch and an Oriole score, bringing them back within one, 22-21. That’s where the score would stay as Fitzgerald didn’t have the most ideal condions to kick in and his PAT was no good. Aſter big carries by Riley and Blake it looked as if Blake was about to score before the ball was knocked out of Blake’s hands right at the goal line to give the Warrior’s the ball back. The weather had really become a factor by now. The Warriors capitalized and were able to score another TD but failed on their 2 point conversion and seled for a 28-21 lead. Meskwaki tried another onside kick but the O’s were ready and aſter easily covering it they had great field posion at the 30 yard line. Loehr directed the offense and easily moved the Oriole’s, picking up another first down before Mother Nature made another appearance; a bad snap at 4th and 2 was recovered by Blake but gave the ball back to Meskwaki. The defense held their own however and forced a punt. With 30 seconds in the 3rd quarter Riley was put in to work a lile magic and that he did. Aſter a 20 yard carry he followed it with another run involving more moves than Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. He took the snap and made a couple cut backs to score another touch down to bring the O’s back within striking range. Fitzgerald was in for another kick but he had no foong to deal with and the extra point was no good. So at the end of three quarters it was Meskwaki on top but with just a 28-27 lead. ORIOLE PRIDE

ORIOLES BEAT MESKWAKI TO PICK UP FIRST WIN OF SEASON

It’s every boys dream. A football game in the rain, rain leads to mud and there was plenty of it last Friday at the Meskwaki Settlement School. Some have referred to it as the Mud Bowl and one could argue it applies, call it what you will, the Oriole’s picked up their first win of the season with a 43-34 win on the road. Meskwaki received the opening kick and they wasted little time in scoring and added a 2 point conversion to go with it. Henry Hoogland, a Sophomore answered however and with Junior James Fitzgerald’s kick the game was 8-7 in favor of the Warriors. Meskwaki scored on their next drive too and was good on their 2 point conversion to go up 16-7. But Junior Cavanaugh Riley returned the ensuing kick-off all the way for an Oriole TD and he got the call for the 2 point conversion as well to put the O’s right back in it, trailing just 16-15. Meskwaki would again answer on their next possession but did not convert their extra point attempt to hold a 22-15 lead. Springville couldn’t answer on their next drive and the Oriole’s defense held the Warriors on their next possession as well so after an even exchange, the 2nd quarter opened up with a nice pick up by Seth Blake a Junior, to put the O’s on the Warrior 36 yard line. Riley took the snap and connected on a nice little pass to Senior, Niklas Brede to put the O’s on the 5 yard line. The next play was another snap to Riley who bought time in the back field while Hoogland got open in the back of the end zone for a leaping catch and an Oriole score, bringing them back within one, 22-21. That’s where the score would stay as Fitzgerald didn’t have the most ideal conditions to kick in and his PAT was no good. A second quarter fumble by Meskwaki was recovered by Junior big man, Hunter Clark to put the O’s offense back on the field at the Warrior 27 yard line. The elements really started to play a part in the game however and the half would go scoreless from here on out. The third quarter opened with the O’s receiving and the rain falling in sheets. After big carries by Riley and Blake it looked as if Blake was about to score before the ball was knocked out of Blake’s hands right at the goal line to give the Warrior’s the ball back. The weather had really become a factor by now. The Warriors capitalized and were able to score another TD but failed on their 2 point conversion and settled for a 28-21 lead. Meskwaki tried another onside kick but the O’s were ready and after easily covering it they had great field position at the 30 yard line. Loehr directed the offense and easily moved the Oriole’s, picking up another first down before Mother Nature made another appearance; a bad snap at 4th and 2 was recovered by Blake but gave the ball back to Meskwaki. The defense held their own however and forced a punt. With 30 seconds in the 3rd quarter Riley was put in to work a little magic and that he did. He took the snap and made a couple cut backs to score another touch down to bring the O’s back within striking range. The fourth quarter opened with a Nick Stuppi introduction when he creamed the Meskwaki QB for a loss on first down and he did it again on their 4th down to give the O’s the ball back. When Springville took the field they didn’t have it long as another snap miscue turned it right back over to Meskwaki. They seized the opportunity and scored another TD but failed on the extra point. With 7:41 in the game and trailing 34-27, Springville needed to get some movement and in just two plays they did as Hoogland was in the end zone for an Oriole touch down. He stayed in for the 2 point attempt and made good on that and with it came the Oriole’s first lead of the ball game! Up 35-34 the sidelines were a little more energized and the crowd too for that matter. The Springville defense had some extra fire also and they tightened up their unit. At the 4:41 mark the Warrior’s were facing 4th and 5 and after back to back time outs their pass play was broken up by Senior Carter Gillmore to give the Oriole’s the ball back with 4:35 in the game. At this point all we had to do was run the clock out but needed first downs to do so and after picking up one, Hoogland broke free for his third score of the night and that pretty much sealed the win. Loehr’s run for the 2 point conversion was a nice touch and the O’s were up 43-34 with 3 minutes to play. The defense went to work and after four downs Loehr again came out to lead the offense—on his left knee. The win moves Springville to an even record of 1-1 on the young season. And what awaits is their third straight road trip and it’s to Gilbertville to take on an always physical Don Bosco. It should be a good one—maybe you could dig out your soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever for the ride up there, it will cer-tainly help set the mood for you!

Clockwise starting from the right; Jacob Loehr handles a high snap; Senior Max Boland nearly gets a piece of a Meskwaki punt; Junior, Nick Stuppi snags himself a sack; Senior Niklas Brede has his man beat and Senior Andy Hagensick lays out for a pass.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK… There’s some pretty wild mascots out there, this week we look at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. One of the nine public high schools in the district is Crooked Oak and they compete as the Ruf-Nex! Their athletic programs include the typical sports like basketball, football and track but also bowling. Their colors are a deep red/burgundy and black. The school has just over 1000 students in grades K-12 and interestingly enough, they broke a world record in March of this year. Students from grades 3-12 joined their hands together to break a world Hula-Hoop Record. Their job was to pass a hula-hoop around without a student breaking hands otherwise it would not count. The previous record was 502 and the Ruff-Nex had 593 students participate to break the world record.

ORIOLE VOLLEYBALL GOES 2-2 AT INDEPENDENCE TOURNAMENT

The Springville Volleyball team opened up their season at the always tough Independence tournament last Saturday. Teams in attendance included West Delaware, the #1 team in 4A. The Oriole’s first took on Valley Lutheran and won, 21-6 and 21-11. Next up was a match up with 3A Benton Community and the O’s won again, 21-17 and 21-14. That earned them a match against West Delaware and the Hawks gave the O’s their first loss of the season, 21-11 and 21-12. In Semi-Final play Springville took on Starmont, who had upset the host team, Independence to advance. The Stars kept the pressure on and beat the

Oriole’s as well, 25-14 and 25-20. The 2-2 finish is a strong indicator of what lies ahead for us fans. “We continue to play a tough schedule every season and starting at Independence helps us learn a lot about our team. The girls hung tough with West Delaware, who deserves their #1 ranking and fell short against Starmont, who will surprise a lot of teams this season. Overall we played with great effort and intensity and I am looking forward to our future progress” said Head Coach, Claude Howard. Coach added that their leaders included, “Megan Wagaman (SR) who led the team with 19 kills and Alyssa Jaeger (SO) who was second in kills and led the team in blocks. It was a group effort as 14 players played showing some early depth on our roster”. Next up for the girls will be the Midland Tournament and will face Cascade-Western Dubuque, Monticello, Midland and Bellevue Marquette.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… This week we have a combo of Prep and College games:

Clarksville at West Central Riceville at Turkey Valley Illinois State at Iowa UNI at Iowa State Make your picks and for the tie-breaker, how many fourth quarter points will the Oriole’s have on Friday? This week we have a three way tie for bragging rites—just about everyone was 2 for 4 on picks but Joe Martin, Robin Menster and Joel Rochleau were correct in predicting the Oriole offense would score first. Thanks for playing and have a great week!

CROSS COUNTRY TEAM HITS THE ROAD RIGHT AWAY

Springville Cross Country runners have two meets under their belt already. Last week they opened up at Mt. Vernon and it is no shock that the co-ed leaders, Junior Katelyn Gloeckner (pictured below) and Junior Sam Lorimer (pictured to the right) were the top finishers for the O’s. Both placed ninth in their divisions. On Tuesday of this week they traveled to Williamsburg and with the heat, the meet start time was pushed back for improved running conditions. The girls team finished 8th out of the 11 teams with Katelyn Gloeckner

leading the way with a 14th place finish and a time of 22:10. In boys action, Coach Pershing said “The boys all got boxed in at the start and took over half a mile to break out so the top 5 runner’s times were a little slower than the week before. Even so they competed well. Sam Lorimer lead the team placing 19th in 18:34. Freshman Caleb Christiansen finished 45th in 19:23. Junior Logan Heath ran his first 5K of the season in 19:42 with senior Garret Wolf right behind in 19:52. Senior Brady Barner rounded out the boys scoring with a time of 21:00. Also, Freshman Austin Smith and Senior Nolan Smith both improved their best times by over a minute”. And he added—”I’m pretty sure the boys learned a hard lesson about the start of a race and won’t get boxed in again”. Both the boys and girls teams have a week to prepare for their next meet at Monticello on September 12. Go O’s! (Photo’s courtesy of Rich Lorimer)
